Oh Elizabeth, stubbornly misunderstanding Darcy no matter the time period or circumstances. The way she fixates on his smile and reads the gamut of unpleasant attitudes into it, hah!
I appreciate the care you are taking with the history and setting. Not long ago, I read a compilation of accounts from British servicemen during WWI, so Darcy's experience going over the top was strongly reminiscent. Poor man, to be living that hell as well as the pain of Georgiana's heartbreak and Elizabeth's rejection. He is a strong man indeed if he survives all this.
