    Chapter 23

Posted on Monday, 3 June 2002

The next day brought on a flurry of guests to the Darcy House including several young ladies and their brothers whom Georgiana had danced with the previous night, but Lord Myres was not one of them. Georgiana had given up hope that he would appear; Elizabeth was relieved, as she did not like his effect on Darcy. She had not needed to mention Lord Myres possible arrival as Georgiana had told her brother of it over breakfast, which almost resulted in Darcy coughing up his cup of tea.

He was not happy on receiving this news but Georgiana didn't seem or want to notice but it did not go unnoticed by Elizabeth. Darcy wanted to talk to Richard about Lord Myres to confirm his suspicions, it was true that he hadn't heard anything scandalous over the past few years but wanted to make sure. He sent an express to Richard and Charlotte inviting them to lunch and now was pacing the Library waiting for their arrival. Finally he saw the carriage pull up and headed down stairs to greet them.

"Good Morning," he said as he walked down the stairs. "I believe you will find the ladies in the parlour with some other callers Mrs. Fitzwilliam. It has been very hard keeping up with all the comings and goings this morning" he said with a sigh. "Richard would you mind coming with me to my study I have some business I need to discuss with you."

"Certain Darcy, I will meet you there directly, but first I will escort my beautiful wife to the parlour and say a quick hello to Georgiana." Richard replied delighting in Charlotte's slight blush.

In return Darcy smiled at Charlotte and rolled his eyes as he excused himself in the study.

A few moments later Richard arrived looking amused. "So what is the matter cousin, I knew something must be wrong to get a expressed invitation from you?"

"Lord Myres is what is wrong." Darcy said plainly, not having to mix words with Richard.

"What is wrong with Adam." The Colonel said in surprise.

Darcy was a little put out by this obvious friendship. "You are well acquainted with him then?" He stated distastefully rather than ask. "I am surprised for I knew him from my Cambridge days and he was not the sort of gentleman that you or I would associate with."

"Yes Darcy but that was years ago, and I would have agreed with you then, but a lot can change in a decade and he is a prime example. Even before his fathers death he settled down. I know what you are thinking but he no longer wastes his money nor does he associate with undesirables. His younger brother is a Lieutenant in the Regimentals and is also an acquaintance of mine. But now you must tell me why you are so interested in him, could it be that he danced with Georgi last night or that he danced with someone else you are trying to protect?"

Richard had watched Darcy the previous night and saw his expression as Lord Myres danced with Elizabeth, the signs where there for all to see, except for the two involved. Darcy had looked like a man processed with jealousy and Elizabeth kept glancing at him, looking concerned by her betrayal for dancing with another man.

After some further discussion of Richard trying to persuade Darcy to give Lord Myres a chance to redeem himself and finding no way to cease Richards arguments Darcy suggested that they return to the ladies. They were surprise that man in question had just a few minutes ago arrived and was seated and engaging in conversation with Charlotte and Elizabeth. Georgiana was shyly looking on with a little bit of envy playing on her mind, she wished she could converse as easily as Elizabeth or Charlotte but did not have the nerve to join in, but with the arrival of Darcy and Richard, Georgiana was pleased to be able to perform hostess duties and arranged for tea to be brought in.

Darcy was not sure that he liked Lord Myres calling as he wasn't certain who he was calling on, at present he was talking with Elizabeth but often would look Georgiana's way, he didn't know which he hated the most.

Richard entertained by his cousin's behaviour wanted to enter into the conversation with Lord Myres. He wanted to find out more information about his brother whom had been in France at last report.

"My brother does well, he is back in England and is currently running some errands for Colonel Foster of the Southern Regiment." Lord Myres replied.

"Colonel Foster?" asked Elizabeth surprised. "Would that be the same Colonel Foster encamped at Meryton?"

"Yes indeed it is." Lord Myres said in surprise. "He is actually a long standing friend of the family and helps my brother when he can. We were all very surprised last year when he finally married, he would have been the most entrenched bachelor of my acquaintance till then. But the now Mrs. Foster I believe is doing him well, he has mellowed somewhat since his marriage. And by your question Miss Elizabeth I think that you must be an acquaintance with him as well."

"Yes sir, as you know from last night, I am from Hertfordshire and we live not one mile from Meryton. My youngest sister I believe is a particular friend of Mrs. Foster. It is a small world indeed." Elizabeth said smiling back at Lord Myres.

Darcy was having a hard time with the conversation, Lord Myres had the audacity of calling her Elizabeth and he knew where she was from, who did he think he was, Elizabeth was his, and would be nobody else's.

It was not long after that Charles and Jane were announced and it was also time for lunch to be served, Georgiana finally found her voice and invited Lord Myres to stay for lunch, Lord Myres accepted quickly which grated Darcy even more.

Over lunch Jane passed a letter to Elizabeth that Mary had written and had it sent it to Jane's residence. Elizabeth was going to read it after lunch, but after some pressing from Georgiana to find out news about her Aunt, Elizabeth quickly skimmed through the letter.

"There is a small passage regarding your Aunt." She stated, not sure if she should continue as it contained private family matters and Lord Myres was in the room.

"Are you able to tell me what it says?" Georgiana asked.

"She still keeps to her room most of the day, but Mr. Collins and Mary visit Rosings once a week on a Friday to discuss parish business over afternoon tea. Mary thinks your Aunt is on the way to recovery, she asks about Andrew and mentions that she received your letter which lifted her spirits." Elizabeth folded the letter and put it away, as she witnessed the glances between Darcy and Richard. It had been many months and Lady Catherine was not coping with Anne's death. In the beginning Mary helped her out by writing correspondence for her and keeping the family informed on her health, but Lady Catherine had dismissed Mary from these duties a few months ago and the letters had dried up. Both Richard and Darcy were contemplating a visit to Rosings to make sure all was well.

After lunch Lord Myres took his leave but invited them to dinner the following night if they were not previous engagements, Darcy quickly tried to think of an excuse but Richard answered first.

"Sounds wonderful, I think we are all free, aren't we Darce?" Richard said, he knew Darcy would try to get out of attending, but he liked Lord Myres and he seemed to have an effect on Georgiana that was pleasing.

"Yes we are free, thank you Richard." Darcy grumbled, "Thank you we will be pleased to attend."

Lord Myres face broke into a smile and he bid them goodbye, Georgiana face also showed absolute delight. Once settled in the drawing room Darcy told the servants to tell any other visitors that they were out, as he felt Georgiana was getting tired. Elizabeth took the opportunity to read the rest of Mary's letter, to her surprise Mary still was very happy in her marriage. She wrote a little about Mr. Collins and his Bee Keeping and a little news she had received from Longbourn, the news was most favourable as the Regiment was removing to Brighton for the winter but her Mama was in despair over Lydia and Kitty's happiness and prospect of marriage. Elizabeth feeling a little guilty about her lack of correspondence to her Mama decided to write a letter that afternoon, Jane also added a little at the end as well.

The next day Georgiana was the first to be ready for the Dinner engagement at Lord Myres home, she was still worried that Elizabeth may be forming an attachment to Lord Myres but with reassurance from Charlotte and Jane the previous day she was certain that her brother and Elizabeth still had a strong bond.

Lord Myres personally greeted the guests in the Main Entranceway of his London Home, it was off similar style and grace as the Darcy's home and there was much to be admired. He was a wonderful host and took them on for a tour of the finer rooms including the Ball Room, gallery and library, Darcy's only fun was picking fault with the furnishings but truth be told there was little at fault. Elizabeth was impressed but her quick comment to Darcy that the size of Lord Myres Library was nothing in comparison to either Pemberley or Brooke Street finally makes Darcy smile. Darcy was only slightly relieved that Lord Myres had taking Georgiana's arm at the start of the tour, which left him to escort Elizabeth. Richard and Charlotte were also in good humour and couldn't help smiling and glancing at each other every few minutes.

The dinner was well presented and tasted superb, Darcy was annoyed that he couldn't find fault in anything that Myres had done and started to find himself enjoying his company, as the party was small and there was no hostess at the house the gentlemen did not retire to another room after dinner. Lord Myres had somehow managed to persuade Georgiana to play a sonnet for them on his piano but not long after she started it was obvious that the piano had not been played in sometime and was very out of tune, Lord Myres apologies profusely about his oversight and promised to get it tuned if the Ladies promised to come back and play for him. Georgiana in her shy way agreed to the scheme, Darcy who had remembered that he did not like Lord Myres was only please for a short period as Lord Myres was making his apologies, he would have never let neglected a fine musical instrument, but his pleasure soon changed as Lord Myres managed to wriggle out of his embarrassment and procure a promise for another visit.

It was decided that cards would be the form of entertainment for the evening and the servants were ordered to set up the table. As there were six people present the game was modified to play in three pairs, again Darcy was not sure whether to be pleased or annoyed at Lord Myres for gaining Georgiana's hand, as it gave him the opportunity to play with Elizabeth but Lord Myres now sat directly in front of Elizabeth and he had the best vantage point.

However Darcy and Elizabeth proved to be the best partnership as they easily won all rounds, even Darcy's mood improved and again he soon forgot to hate Lord Myres and became generally cheerful. The evening ended all to soon, but the carriage had been ordered earlier and now waited for them. Lord Myres escorted them to the entrance and a servant brought out the jackets gloves and hats. While Darcy was helping Georgiana with her coat Lord Myres went to Elizabeth's side.

"Miss Elizabeth, I know this is unusual but please accept this note from me, I wanted to speak to you alone but I was unable this evening. Please forgive my liberty." He whispered as he handed Elizabeth a small folded note.

Elizabeth's stomach was in a knot, she didn't know what to think, what could he want to write to her about. She felt she couldn't refuse him as his look was sincere and something about it told her that it was important. She quickly finished tying her bonnet and joined Charlotte and Richard who were still grinning at each other, something was amiss with them as well she would have to ask Charlotte about in the morning. The carriage ride home was unusually quiet Elizabeth would have expected Georgiana to talk her ear off, so she put it down to being a long night and enjoyed the night view as much as she could with a letter sitting in her pocket. When they got home Georgiana went strait to bed and Elizabeth followed her lead, she wished Darcy a good night and retired to her room.

Once she was safely in her room she took the note out of her pocket, her hands were slightly shaking and she laughed at herself for being so silly.

    Dear Miss Bennet,

Again forgive my impertinence for writing this note to you, I fear you will think ill of me but it must be done.

The reason for writing is something I heard yesterday which caused me great alarm. You mentioned that the _________ Regiment was encamped near your home in Hertfordshire and that your sister is friendly with Mrs. Foster. My concern is here, there is an officer within the ranks that is known among some as a gambler, thief and blackmailer, but to most he comes across as Charming, witty and I hate to say it Handsome. If your sister is well aquatinted with Mrs. Foster then I have little doubt that she is aquatinted with this deceptive officer. I cannot offer you all the facts as I have not the authority to do so but can only offer you my experiences with him. He is not to be trusted, he will only think of himself with no consequences to others. This officer Miss Bennet is Mr. George Wickham, do all you can to ensure that he does not associate with your family and sisters, for I fear that if he knows of the acquaintance you have with the Darcy's he might do something dishonourable. Write your father, or your clergyman, do what ever it takes to make this man known to your family. I write this note with a heavy heart for I too have been stung by this man and have no wish to hear of your family enduring his evil deeds.

    Yours sincerely.
    AM

Elizabeth re read the letter several times, she could not believe that he was warning her about Wickham, she wondered at what she would have thought about this letter if she did not known the truth. Indeed this letter gave her little detail and relied on her believing a new acquaintance, but one thing it did offer was that she could tell her general acquaintance about Wickham. Her dilemma was how she could do this, maybe she could consult Darcy on the matter, and he surely would be able to give her good advice. But also why if she had told Lord Myres that the Regiment were removing themselves from Hertfordshire would he still find in necessary to warn her. She wondered if he had heard something from his brother, the note left more questions than answers, she would need to find a way to speak to him again, before speaking to Darcy about this.

The next morning Elizabeth noticed that the mood around the house was somewhat subdue, when Georgiana took her leave from the drawing room Elizabeth took the opportunity of the peace to read a long forgotten book. Unbeknownst to Elizabeth Georgiana went to find her brother, he was found in his study playing with Andrew and reading anther nursery rhyme to him.

"Georgi, come join us." He started to say before he noticed the pained look on her face. "What's wrong, you look unwell.

Georgiana burst into tears, and sat heavily and unlady like onto the floor next to Darcy and a happy Andrew. "I am so foolish." She sobbed. "I thought he liked me, but I am mistaken again, how will I ever know?"

Darcy handed her his handkerchief and was watching her with a worry expression. "Who Georgiana?"

After a few minutes she had stopped sobbing enough to answer "You will think me childish"

"Please Georgi, you can tell me, I will not think you childish, you are to grown for me ever to think that again." Darcy said with a heavy heart, his baby sister was growing up and was now feeling the bitter sweet feelings of falling in love.

Georgiana let out a sigh "Lord Myrrrrrrress." She wept. "I know that I am being silly, but he was very attentive last night, and complemented me several times, I was sure he liked me, but he prefers Elizabeth."

Darcy stiffened at the thought, that man is the torment of my life. He put Andrew down on the floor and leaned over to comfort Georgiana. His mind was in turmoil, he once again hated Lord Myres with a passion, he had upset his dear sister and was setting his designs on his Elizabeth. It took awhile for his thoughts to make sense, "Are you sure Georgi? How do you know? I did not see anything last night to confirm your opinions?"

"Last night when you were helping me with my coat he gave her a love letter, I saw him."

Before he knew it, Darcy had jumped to his feet and was pacing up and down. "And you are sure of this." He said, in a voice that betrayed his anger.

Georgiana thinking that the anger was directed at her burst into tears again. "Yesssssss"

Darcy realising that he wasn't making the situation any better apologised, he thought a moment longer and requested that she look after Andrew so he could find out what this rake had written Elizabeth.

"But she does not know that I saw the letter." Cried Georgiana, "She will think that I am spying on her."

"I will not let her know how I came by this information. Trust me Georgiana." He said reassuringly as he walked towards the door, but Georgiana was still not thinking clearly. One minute she wanted to believe that the letter was harmless or even a plan to get Elizabeth to help him win her, and the next she was sure it was a passionate love letter to Elizabeth. She needed time to compose herself and she wanted to be alone, Andrew was happily playing with a toy so she scooped him up and took him back to the nursery.

Darcy burst into the drawing room where Elizabeth had been reading unaware of the scene that had unfolded in the Library a few minutes before.

"MISS BENNET." Darcy said with a menacing voice, he hadn't mean to sound so forceful but he also hadn't been thinking clearly when entering the room, his anger was directed at Lord Myres and it was now clouding his judgment.

Elizabeth not being used to such a voice stood up immediately and replied with an equally forceful voice "Mr. Darcy." Briefly the two stood eyeing each other. Elizabeth was confused but could tell something was wrong, she backed of slightly as she thought of Georgiana's quiet behaviour since the dinner party, had she done something to upset her, definitely that would provoke Mr. Darcy into address her is such a manner. So in a slightly softer tone. "Can I help you with something Mr. Darcy?"

"I am planning on it Miss Bennet." He replied grimly and paced the room once more. "I believe that Lord Myres took advantage of you yesterday and addressed you with a letter, am I correct?" he finally said as he looked again directly at her.

Elizabeth was surprised, and her face openly showed it. "How... how did you find out." She stuttered out. "No never mind, there is no need to answer that. Truth be known Mr. Darcy I was going to speak to you about the contents anyway. But maybe we can be civilised about it and sit down and discuss matters in a proper like way." Her surprise was dangerously turning into anger, why was he angry at her, it wasn't her fault that Lord Myres had written to her, she had accepted it, but most unwillingly.

Darcy seemed to regain himself. "Yes of course Miss Bennet. Please have a seat."

She could tell he was still agitated as she watched him pace that room again. "The letter is question was a letter of warning Mr. Darcy, it warned me and my family against an acquaintance."

Darcy stopped pacing and turned to look at her, his mouth had dropped open slightly for this was the last thing we was expecting. "The letter was warning you against someone? Why would he do that, he is not in the habit of looking out for others best interests." He almost spat out. "It could only be in the hopes of bettering him in your mind."

"Mr. Darcy, I believe this time you are quite mistaking on the matter, for you haven't asked me who he is warning me off. You are correct in one point, it has put him in a better light in my opinion, I believe he is trust worthy and if I did not already know of the contents of the letter then I would have been very grateful for the information he felt necessary to share with me."

Darcy was reeling did she really think better of Lord Myres when he had told her not to trust him, but her first question quickly overtook his thoughts. "So then tell me Miss Bennet who did Lord Myres feel in necessary to warn you about?"

Elizabeth smiled triumphantly. "Mr. George Wickham. He told me not to trust him, and to warn my father of his general deceitful behaviour?" She was delighted with the response from Darcy upon hearing the news.

"He warned you against Wickham, but they were friends at University." He said in astonishment.

Elizabeth sat there a moment longer, replaying Darcy's past behaviour to Lord Myres, she had not realised that Myres had been friendly with Wickham and it certainly explained Darcy's withdrawn and sometimes uncivil reaction to him. "Is that why you have expressed your doubts about Lord Myres character?"

"Partly" he replied absentmindedly. "Can I ask to see this letter or does is contain things that I shouldn't see." He said, again bitterness was creeping in.

Elizabeth sensing his tension agreed and went to retrieve the letter from her room. After returning she handed Darcy the letter in silence and watched him, first he snorted as he read "Again forgive my impertinence for writing this note to you" then he settled somewhat over the rest of the letter, he was glad that he hadn't written anything about Georgi and wondered if Lord Myres knew of the Ramsgate affair, he certainly hoped not. The part that intrigued him the most was the mention of being stung himself, he would have to do some inquiring as to what that detailed. He finally finished the note and handed it back to Elizabeth. "Thank you for shearing this with me, I am sorry for my abruptness earlier I can only say in my defense that I jumped to the wrong conclusion again and I apologise for it." He was relieved when Elizabeth smiled back at him. "I have one more favour of you Miss Bennet, it is of a delicate nature and wondered if you could help me?"

"Of course Mr. Darcy." Elizabeth said, wondering if this request had anything to do with Georgiana.

"I need to speak to Georgi about Lord Myres, I fear she is quite taking with him, but I am wondering if you could maybe help her... persuade her that there are nicer younger gentlemen that she could meet. After all she has only been to two balls and...." Darcy stopped mid sentence as he sensed then saw Elizabeth's disapproving look. "Miss Bennet I am only looking out for my sister that is all, I think she could do a lot better than...."

"Than a titled Lord with many beautiful estates and an income to keep her in the fashion she has grown up in. Who takes great effort to assure the safety of young ladies that he has only just meet. Yes Mr. Darcy I could see how he would be a terrible choice for Georgi. But as you say Mr. Darcy I will take Georgi to the docks and introduce her to some nice young but poor navel officer with whom you have no past with." Elizabeth said, with a warning glint in her eye.

"That is not what I meant and you know it Miss Bennet." He said seriously, he knew that on paper Lord Myres was everything he wished for in a suitor for Georgiana but how could he forget the past so easily, it would take a lot more persuasion than two nights of civility and gentleman like behaviour

Elizabeth sensing it was time also to become serious told Darcy that she would not interfere but would help Georgiana if she asked her for advise, she reassured Darcy that she was willing and keep an eye out for her and never leave her alone unchaperoned. Darcy conceded that this was a better plan.

"Thank you Miss Bennet, I am truly grateful, but now if you excuse me I need to speak to Georgiana myself." Darcy noticed the warning look Elizabeth gave him again. "Fear not. I have listened to what you have said and I too will follow your course of action." He was gratified by the warm smile that spread across Elizabeth's lips, "Till later then." He said as he lifted her hand and placed a gentle kiss upon it.

After Darcy had left the room Elizabeth sat down, her heart was still beating hard. The kiss he had given her still tingled and she was still smiling with pleasure some five minutes later. Elizabeth tried returning to her book but she was far to distracted to make sense of what she was reading.

Meanwhile Darcy finally found Georgiana sitting in her room. There had been some more tears but Darcy was able to confirm that the letter contained no romantic notions and penned only a warning against Wickham. It took him a while to convince Georgiana that Lord Myres knew nothing of the Ramsgate affair. As much as it pained Darcy he had to admit the Lord Myres had been a true Gentleman and friend. He left Georgiana to freshen up and headed down stairs for lunch, the morning had disappeared and none of the work that he had planned on finishing he had started.

Over lunch Georgiana was back to her normal self, she still felt a little foolish for jumping to conclusions and wanted to apologies to Elizabeth. She had planned on suggesting a walk to the park as she knew that her brother would be busy for the rest of the day with Estate business. When she asked, and Elizabeth happily accepted she could see the disappointed look of William's face and resolved into making it up to him somehow.

All coated up the ladies stepped out and enjoyed the freshness of the air, because it was slightly cooler there where not a lot of other young ladies enjoying a stroll. Though the roads and paths were busy with gentlemen going about their business. They had walked along for sometime admiring the trees in the park, both ladies wanted to broach a same subject of Lord Myres.

"So Georgi, how did you find last night? Did your card partner live up to your standards?" Elizabeth said smiling, ever hopeful that she would start Georgi talking about Lord Myres.

"Oh yes, very agreeable, I only hope that he didn't find me to cumbersome I am not very good at cards, I do not take enough risks." Georgiana said shyly.

"Plenty of time to take risks later, we should practise cards together and you can take all the risks you want without hurting your reputation. Anyhow your brother is a very good card player you should ask him for instruction. I dear say if you played with him you would not lose."

"Winning is not everything, I think. Sometimes it is better to have a not so serious partner." Georgiana said and blushed despite herself.

"True, winning in not everything, just the icing on the cake. To have an agreeable partner is much more satisfying."

Both Georgiana and Elizabeth laughed at each other.

"Milady's what a pleasant surprise. I was just on my way to pay you a visit." Lord Myres grinned as he bowed. "I might have walked right by you on the other side of the road if I had not heard a delightful laugh coming from your direction."

"Lord Myres, indeed it is a pleasant surprise, Georgiana and I were just enjoying some fresh air, weren't we Georgiana?"

"Ummmm, yes we were." Georgiana replied quietly while colouring.

"We were just about to head back if you care to join us." Elizabeth asked as she gave Georgiana hand a squeeze.

"Yes please do." She said timidly. Georgiana couldn't understand why all her confidence had suddenly deserted her, she desperately wanted to be like Elizabeth and be able to hold a conversation with Lord Myres, but she was still hurting a little from the letter incident.

The small group walked along together discussing Georgiana's favourite subject of Music, Lord Myres had assured the ladies that the Piano Tuner had been orders and would complete his task by mid afternoon. Georgiana expressed her delight and reconfirmed at a time suitable for everyone that they indeed would like to try the newly tuned piano. It didn't take long for them to reach the house and were in the midst of taking of coats and jackets when Darcy arrived.

"Myres!" he said in surprise. "I see you have found the ladies, was that by good luck or was it planned?'

Elizabeth could tell from the tone that his enquiry was not meant in good humour and quietly in Georgiana's ear suggested that they go into the parlour and order some tea. Darcy's question to Lord Myres was only answered with a grin and the rising of one eyebrow, he accepted the kind invitation for tea and they all including Darcy made themselves comfortable in the parlour.

"I was on my way here, when I saw these two delightful angles walking on the other side of the road." Lord Myres started, he noticed Darcys grimace and began to enjoy himself. "My reason for calling is that I find myself going to the Theatre tomorrow night with no one else to attend with me. I was wondering if you would all care to join me, including Colonel and Mrs. Fitzwilliam of course.

Georgiana couldn't be more pleased but she momentarily went into concern when she saw her brothers' expression and was sure he was not to turn down the offer. She also watched with relief, as Elizabeth was able with one look change Darcy's expression.

"It is very kind of you Lord Myres, but as you are probably aware we have our own box at the theatre." He replied bluntly.

"Yes I'm well aware of that. In fact you managed to get first priority on the best box in the theatre I was most put out when the management told me that I was second in line and I wouldn't stop pestering them until they told my who had beating me to it. But I digress I realise that you have this box but it is the company I was inviting and if you were not planning on attending the theatre tomorrow night then there can be no harm in coming as my guests." He said with a smile and a laugh. Darcy was going to be much harder work than he originally thought, at university they had little to do with each other but if it was more possible Darcy had grown more serious.

Darcy also couldn't help seeing the look of hope on Georgiana's face and since she had had a rough morning he wanted to make her happy unfortunately the happiness came in the form of Lord Myres. "Well it looks like the ladies are interested in attending the theatre tomorrow and I for one do not like to disappoint. So I will accept on their behalf."

"Excellent, and will you be sure to invite your cousins?" said a very happy Lord Myres.

"Consider it done." Darcy said with a little sarcasm in his voice.

They were interrupted by the entrance of two servants one bearing a tray of tea and cakes and the other with a message from the Nanny, Darcy read the message and quickly excused himself.

"What do you think is wrong?" asked Georgiana to Elizabeth.

"I'm not sure, but I am sure if it is serious the Nanny would have come herself."

"You could be right." Began Georgiana, "But I would be happier if I saw myself." She turned to Lord Myres "Will you excuse me, I'm sure I would only be a few minutes but I would very much like to check on Andrew."

"By all means Miss Darcy, Please check on your family that is by far more important than me."

"Thank you, you are too kind." Georgiana said.

Both Elizabeth and Lord Myres watch Georgiana walk out the door.

"She is a very thoughtful young lady." Lord Myres mused out load then realising his wondering mind he turned to Elizabeth with one of his winning smiles and asked. "Miss Elizabeth I was wondering if I could ask of you a very important request?"

    Chapter 24

Posted on Sunday, 16 June 2002

Elizabeth had seated herself comfortably in the front of the theatre box and was looking forward to the play beginning, Lord Myres had surprised her with his request the previous day but she could help smiling to herself every time she thought about it.

Georgiana had also seated herself and both ladies unknowingly were waiting to see which Gentleman would sit next to them. After a few seconds which seemed like a few hours, Elizabeth turned around to see what was keeping them from being seated and saw to her amazement some strange manly eyeballing scene unfold before her. Neither gentleman would look away and neither spoke, they seemed to be intent on just staring each other down.

Richard and Charlotte were also watching what was happening and looked at Elizabeth with equal amazement and surprise. "Lord Myres" Charlotte started. "I must thank you for your kind invitation again, it is very much appreciated."

This was enough to bring both gentlemen to reality and Lord Myres acknowledged Mrs. Fitzwilliam with a kind smile. "You are most welcome, Mrs. Fitzwilliam, but there is no need, please have a seat."

While Lord Myres was speaking Darcy took advantage of the situation and sat in the seat that was being contested, the one in the middle of Georgiana and Elizabeth, now it was up to Lord Myres to sit either on Elizabeth's right or Georgi's left. When Lord Myres attention was back to more important things such as his own seating arrangements he was surprised to see Darcy already sitting with a very smug look upon his face. He pondered only for a brief second on what to do next but he thought of what Elizabeth had said the day before and promptly sat next to Georgiana.

As the play started Mr. Darcy offered Elizabeth the use of his opera glasses to gain a better view of the stage. Elizabeth was momentarily lost for breath by the touch of Darcy's hand on hers as she accepted the glasses. She also noticed the look on his face when he realised that they were touching, he didn't remove his hand as quickly as he should but she didn't retreat hers either. As he shifted his gaze from her fine delicate hand to her exquisite dark eyes he was astonished to find them staring lovingly back at him, he held her precious look for as long as he dared and then turned his head back to the stage as Elizabeth pretended to be busy with the glasses. Darcy couldn't help himself and smiled. He was smiling at the memory and the feeling of the look in her eyes, and he knew that if he were to ask, she would say yes.

Elizabeth meanwhile was having trouble breathing and concentrating, was there a play happening, yes she was sure of that, but she could not force her mind to focus. She hoped no one would ask questions about the play afterwards, as she was sure she wouldn't have any of the answers.

Somehow an hour had passed and the curtains were drawn for the interval and the crowd started to move slowly into the foyer. Darcy was quick to offer his hand to escort her out and once settled in a quiet spot the gentlemen left for refreshments, leaving the ladies to reflect on the evening so far.

"So Georgiana, how are you finding the play?" Charlotte asked.

"Hmmmm, what?" came Georgiana's half heard reply.

Charlotte asked again and Georgiana blushed with embarrassment. "I'm sorry Charlotte, I am a little distracted. Yes the play is wonderful is it not?"

Elizabeth who was correct in thinking that she would have a hard time remembering what the play was about and was glad Charlotte had not asked her that question. She could see in the distance that the Gentlemen were walking back and then she saw that Mr. Darcy had been trapped by some elderly Lady and was now expected to talk to her. She also noticed how quickly both the Colonel and Lord Myres had swerved to be out of this lady's sight. They were both grinning at each other when the finally got to them.

"Richard, how could you leave William to the mercies of Mrs. Cartwright, you now how she likes to monopolise the conversation, we will be lucky to see him again until the second half starts." Georgiana said with worry in her voice.

"Do not worry yourself my dear Georgi, Darcy is a big boy and he can take care of himself." Richard said back highly amused. This night was turning out far better than he imagined, he had witnessed the exchange of looks between Darcy and Elizabeth, Lord Myres was attending Georgiana very nicely and he couldn't be happier with himself even if he tried.

"Maybe I should go to his rescue." Said Georgi.

"Yes that is probably a good idea, or else poor Elizabeth will not get a drink tonight." Lord Myres commented as he watched with pleasure at Darcy's discomfort in talking to the very rich but very noisy Mrs. Cartwright.

"I will go over and relieve him of his duty." Georgi said grimly, she really did want to leave Lord Myres side, but neither gentleman looked like they were going to rescue her brother. She walked away dishearten as she realised that no one was going to accompany her.

"Richard you should have offered to help Mr. Darcy." Charlotte scolded. "Now poor Georgi will have to remain with Mrs. Cartwright."

"I'm am truly sorry for Georgiana my dear but I do love to see Darcy squirm."

Lord Myers took the opportunity to speak to Elizabeth quietly. "I must thank you Miss Elizabeth. For your answer yesterday for it has made me a very happy man, at first I was not convinced on how I must go about it, but I see the truth in your response and now I know how to act and you will see the consequences of it." Lord Myres said, flashing another smile her way.

As they turned their attention back to the group they could see that Darcy and Georgiana were walking back. Both Darcy and Georgiana saw Lord Myres talking to Elizabeth in such an intimate way they and became instantly concerned. Darcy said something in Georgiana's ear that Elizabeth could not hear, before he handed her a glass of wine.

"I am truly sorry for the delay Miss Bennet, but a old friend of the family stopped me to enquire after them."

"No need to apologies Mr. Darcy." Elizabeth said, she was going to say more but the theatre crier called out that the play was about to begin and that every one should take their seats, again the group walked back to their box and reseated themselves in the same places. Darcy was still seething at Lord Myres for talking to Elizabeth but with the closeness of her sitting beside him, he began to relax. He hadn't imagined that look she gave him only an hour earlier. If by some magic incantation it was at that moment Elizabeth leaned over to hand back the glasses.

"Here you go Mr. Darcy, thank you very much for the use of them in the first half."

"You are most welcome, Miss Bennet." He said as he reached for the glasses with both his hands. After taking the glasses with his left hand he gathered up his courage and took her hand in his free one and held it tight more so, to reassure himself. He was sure that nobody would notice, as it was dark in the theatre and the others were to his left. Elizabeth closed her eyes and let the warmth of his hand melt into her own. She did not think twice at the impropriety of it as her heart swelled and her breathing heightened.

What are you doing, Darcy - Let go of her hand, let go, let go, let go ... arrrrrhhhhhgggg ... Its no use I can't, I have simply lost all control of my senses. I think I remember laughing at Bingley for acting this way ... Could this really be happening to me. Give it up there is no way I can let her go now ... enjoy it till the curtains go down

As the play concluded Darcy finally managed with all his strength to release her delicate hand but only briefly as he again helped her up ready to depart. He could tell that she had been affected by such a simple gesture and knew that tomorrow he would ask her to be his. Again this brought an unwilling smile on his face which left Georgiana perplexed over what he found amusing.

As a tradition that Richard had started a few years back it was custom for the Theatregoers to have tea and supper at a small but very fashionable teahouse down the road from the Theatre. Georgiana not wanting the night to end with Lord Myres approached Richard about suggesting it to Darcy.

"Capital Idea, Georgi. I insist that we all go." He said to everyone and gave a meaningful glance to Charlotte.

Elizabeth who had finally gained her composed enough to witness the glance, decided then and there to find out from Charlotte what all this sideways glancing and smiles were about. Elizabeth was momentarily hindered by the thought of leaving Mr. Darcy's side, who had taking the liberty of claiming her arm. But as always Darcy won and she made herself content with sitting next to Charlotte at the Tea Rooms to find out what was going on. After walking mainly in silence the party found themselves being seated and ordering tea and cake.

"Charlotte," Elizabeth whispered. "Is there something I should know about?"

"What ever do you mean?" Charlotte asked suspiciously.

"Well for the last couple of days I have been meaning to talk to you about the grinning and sideways glances you keep throwing at Colonel Fitzwilliam. Now you simply must tell me what is going on. I hope you are not planning on any match making are you? You aren't turning into my Mama I hope." She said with a smile.

Charlotte gave a surprised look at her friend's statement before beginning to answer, but quickly turned to her husband and whispered something in his ear, which made him laugh out loud. Elizabeth was shocked at their actions and was met with an equally quizzical look from Darcy.

"Well I see that we are not good at hiding things, my Dear." Said Richard still laughing, "Especially from our loving Relatives."

"Richard you forget yourself, Elizabeth is a friend not a relative." Charlotte stressed back.

And with a glint in his eye he corrected himself. Both Darcy and himself were having the same thought. ~ not for long, she will be a relative soon enough.

"You are correct Elizabeth, something has happened or should I say is going to happen in the near future. My beautiful, talented, wonderful wife is going to have a baby, and all her wonderful charms will be passed on for another generation. If we had a drink in our hands I would ask you to raise your glasses and toast us." Richard concluded with a smile to outshine Lord Myres.

The congratulations were flowing from Elizabeth, Georgiana and Lord Myres. Elizabeth was the first to notice that Darcy had become quiet, she knew him well enough to know of his worry over Charlotte's health and tried to reassure him. Richard also sensed the uneasiness about Darcy and for once kept silent on the matter. Finally the tea arrived and the celebrations started again.

"Only in London would one toast with tea cups" Lord Myres added. "Well here is to the Col and Mrs. Fitzwilliam, may this child and the others that follow and the good sense and beauty of their mother and the ... the ... the hmmm Good luck of their father!!!"

Everyone laughed at the joke made for Richard's embarrassment.

"Well I hope it is not too hard to list my excellent qualities, I shall make a list promptly and send them to you Adam. Never the less, Good luck is a wonderful thing to have for it was good luck that brought me to Hertfordshire. Come to think of it Hertfordshire is a very lucky place don't you agree Charlotte." The Colonel said with a wink. The return look from Charlotte told him to tread carefully. "Why Miss Elizabeth would have to agree, for it was wonderful luck that brought.." He momentarily stopped to rub his shin, which Charlotte had kicked under the table "your sister and Mr. Bingley together."

Elizabeth sighed in relief, and the conversation that followed turned mainly to Charlotte about the baby.

"Well I must be getting the ladies back home, it is getting late." Darcy said to Lord Myres. "But I must thank you for your invitation and I think I can say for everyone that we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and can hopefully return the same courtesy someday." Darcy surprised himself for what he had said he had meant. He had observed Lord Myres and once again nothing was wanting, his actions with exception of his small indiscretion at the interval was very pleasing, and as he had reassured Georgiana that they were only talking and that nothing could be construed at their behaviour. That there was nothing wrong with talking to each other, he had to believe it himself.

"You are most welcome, it was entirely my pleasure I assure you." Lord Myres responded.

The group left the Tea Room and with a couple of extra hugs for Charlotte as they entered their own carriage and headed for home. Georgiana was full of tales about the evening, so much so she didn't stop talking the entire trip home, she only briefly stopped as she remembered Lord Myres and Elizabeth speaking privately at the interval, but he had been much to attentive to her throughout the evening for her to suspect anything. It was extremely late when they arrived home and all agreed to head strait for bed. Darcy in particular had a proposal to write and headed for his study to start the first draft. Elizabeth and Georgiana went to bed with happy thoughts and dreams in their heads

The next morning finally came but few of the residence had slept well, Darcy had stayed up until 4.30 in the morning and had practised so many times his proposals that he was repeating them in his sleep, he had also worked out the best plan for the Wedding arrangements. They would wait about 4 months till well after the anniversary of Anne's death and then marry at Longbourn before whisking her away to Pemberley was she rightly belonged. She would also have to move out of his residence as much as is saddened him to do this, he would not risk her reputation by allowing her to stay at his home. He would organise with Bingley for her to be taking to his house, and if Bingley was planning on going to the country she could stay at Richard and Charlottes house, as long as she was near enough to visit everyday. He had worried about what people would say, firstly she had no family connections or fortune, not that did not concerned him. Her mother worried him a little and so did the younger sisters but that could be overcome. It was rather soon after Anne's death and he still did missed her, but after taking Georgiana's advise he had re read the letter she had written him, it almost read as if she was giving him her blessing to the union he felt as if somehow she was foreseeing over his future with a smile as the morning sun was shining bright and warm.

He felt confident that today would be the start of the rest of a happy life, Andrew would have the best mother in the world and best of all since he had an heir there was no need for Elizabeth ever to get pregnant and she would live a very long and happy life with him.

With that all sorted in his head he found himself outside the drawing room door going over one more time what he was about to say. He knew Georgiana was up in the nursery playing with Andrew and that it would be the perfect time to ask Elizabeth to marry him, so with purpose he walked in the room.

"Wonderful morning, don't you agree Miss Bennet?" Darcy started and then faulted when Elizabeth gave him a quizzical look and answer. He sat him self down on one of his favourite chairs but today it was not the comfortable trustworthy chair he liked, it became instantly uncomfortable and drained him off is confidence, he was a tall man but with Elizabeth sitting at the writing desk he now found himself looking up at her like a child, so he got up and walked towards the window, once there he was confused as to why he was standing at the window when he should be standing or kneeling at Elizabeth's side, turning around he headed for Elizabeth. Once he had finished traversing the room in silence he stood next to his beloved Elizabeth and was pleased that he now stood taller than her. Elizabeth was looking even more quizzical, but watching Darcy pace around the room with obviously something on his mind made her smile. ~ now where was I he thought to himself. ~ ah yes that's right

"Off course you must move out as it would not be proper to stay here now" he said triumphantly. He was confused as he watched Elizabeth's face turn from the bewitching smile to a look a horror.

"But why?" Elizabeth stammered out on the verge of tears. "What have I done to upset you? Please you must tell me, I am sure it is a mistake and where am I to go?"

Darcy realising his mistake said something very ungentlemanly like which caused Elizabeth's paled complexion to go paler as she mustered up all her strength and rushed for the door. What had she done that would cause Mr. Darcy to throw her out of his house and to speak to her like that. Her mind was in so much turmoil she did not hear Darcy run after her, he had managed to catch up with her just before she reached the door that lead out into the hallway.

"Miss Bennet ... Elizabeth, forgive me. I forgot the first part of my speech and the reason why I need to speak to with you this morning." He watched nervously as Elizabeth tried to blink back a fallen tear, this caused his heart to wrench in two and he desperately wanted to make amends. "Please I have something very important to ask of you." He said in a kinder gentler voice. He took Elizabeth's silence as a prompt to continue and decided this time to take it slow and to do things in the correct order, he got down on one knew and took Elizabeth's hands in his. "Elizabeth, will you marry me?"

Elizabeth was silent a little longer, trying to put together what had just happened, first he had asked her to remove herself from his home and then on bent knee he proposed. Finally it all made sense as she remembered what he said, he had forgotten the first part and suddenly all her emotions released themselves in a laugh. She looked down at Darcy whose face was showing the displeasure at being laughed at.

Indeed he did not understand what the laughter was about, was it directed at him, was it such a laughable idea that he wanted to marry her.

Elizabeth saw the confused look in his eyes and took pity on his pitiable excuse for a proposal, she knelt down next to him and with ease she let her feelings take control and simply said "Yes." Her voice trembled a little as she looked up into his dark eyes. They gazed at each other a moment longer until Darcy gently moved closer taking his hands from hers to gently tilted her head back and kissed her lovingly on the lips. After celebrating the feeling of her warmth and tender loving touch he took her in his arms held her a moment longer then guided her back up to her feet.

"You have made me the happiest man in the world." He said softly in her ear, please say it again I beg you."

Elizabeth looked up at him again and a smile played on her lips. "Yes I will marry you Mr. Darcy. But be careful I might like being begged at, it is something I could quiet get use to."

"Arhh, there is the Elizabeth that I love so dearly." He said enjoying her wit.

"Mr. Darcy I beg you, please say that again." She breathed breathlessly as she heard his declaration.

    "I love you Elizabeth."

"I love you too. Mr. Da ... William."

"I think I could play this game all day long, you say one thing and I will beg you to repeat it and then I will say something and you will beg me to repeat it, but I will not relent so easily I must be bribed as well as begged at, and nothing but a kiss will break my resolve." He said back. They enjoyed another kiss to seal the agreement until Darcy pulled away reluctantly. "Elizabeth we do need to discuss something's."

Elizabeth nodded as Darcy escorted her to the couch. They discussed the matter of her living arrangements as Georgi's particular friend and why she needed to move out, which now made complete sense to Elizabeth. She was even able to make Darcy blush at his huge blunder and then the serious discussion of the timing of the actual wedding was discussed. Darcy was relieved that Elizabeth agreed that a wait of five months would be acceptable if not the hardest thing she would have to endure. They also agreed to keep the news of the engagement a close secret until he had secured her Fathers permission. With all the necessary details out of the way they decided that a walk in the park would be desirable, Darcy asked a maid to let Georgiana know and that she and Andrew may like to join them.

The walk had been very enjoyable, it had been and extremely hard keeping the truth from Georgi, but they had decided to tell her and the Bingley's over dinner that night. Both Elizabeth and Darcy were grinning from ear to ear but Georgiana had giving them space by walking in front with the baby and did not notice. They had talked about what Elizabeth would be like as a mother, and she had reassured him on several occasions that she would model herself after her Aunt Gardener but Darcy couldn't help teasing Elizabeth a little about her own mother.

When they arrived home Elizabeth went upstairs to freshen up before lunch, sitting on her writing desk she found two letters waiting for her, the first was from a friend in Meryton but the second was the one that caused concern it was from her Father and it had only been a week since sending one to him, this did not bode well.

    Chapter 25

Posted on Monday, 1 July 2002

Elizabeth quickly read through the letter from her father, it contents were a little worrisome but not wholly bad. He had written that the letter she had sent him had been a week late as Lydia upon special request from Mrs. Foster had left for Brighton five nights earlier. Her Father was sure that Lydia would no doubt cause distraction among many a young officer but he would write Colonel Foster and ask him to keep a special eye on Lydia around Wickham. He also mentioned that Wickham's character was the main topic of Meryton since his departure, he was owing several debts to traders and several daughters were distressed at the lost of a favourite officer this latter part seemed to amuse Mr. Bennet. Elizabeth folder the letter and put it away in her pocket book, she sighed as she dearly wished that the Fosters would not allow Lydia to socialise with Mr. Wickham, but as she could do nothing, she would have to place her trust in them.

In the afternoon Charles and Jane arrived as planned, while the ladies occupied themselves in the Music Room the gentlemen discussed business in the study. Charles was eager to find a new country estate somewhere in Derbyshire, and Darcy finding it an agreeable idea and guessing at the underlying reason why, complied a letter to his solicitor to find the perfect place to buy or let.

When they finally gathered together in the Dinning Room, Darcy's nervousness increased. Elizabeth was seated next to him and held his hand secretly under the table in a reassuring way, he was trying to remember how the others had announced their good news of a pending marriage but had little success. He had not needed to announce his first marriage as Lady Catherine had seen to all the details, he only had to turn up at the Cathedral on time. The thought of Anne saddened him a little and Elizabeth picked up on it almost immediately and asked if there was a problem. Darcy slowly shook his head in the negative and sighed deeply, when he looked up at Elizabeth he could see her concern and worry. "I am sorry my love, do not be concerned," he said quietly, but not quietly enough for Georgiana heard the comment and lifted her eyebrows in complete astonishment, did he just call Elizabeth, My Love .

Elizabeth's tender look gave him the encouragement he needed as he asked for everyone's attention.

"I am happy to announce." he paused as Georgiana let out a squeal of delight, he gave her quick questioning look and continued. "That this morning I asked Miss Bennet, Elizabeth to marry me, and I am very pleased to say that she has consented." He lifted Elizabeth's hand that was still holding his for support and gently kissed it.

Jane and Bingley could not congratulate the couple enough and Georgiana almost overcome with happiness needed to sit down to compose herself.

"Well I must say Darcy." Said Charles. "I am very happy for you both, it is hard to imagine that we will now be brothers, but I could not be happier in your choice. Elizabeth will no doubt make a very welcome addition to your family."

Darcy smiled and accepted the congratulations, he informed the others that it was to be kept quiet until Mr. Bennet's permission had been sort and then they would wait until May to be wed. Jane looked worried for a brief moment at the lengthy delay of the Wedding but Elizabeth explained to her and Georgiana the reason why.

The discussion quickly turned to Elizabeth's living arrangements for the next few months and Charles eagerly agreed to Elizabeth staying with them for the entire duration, as they had no immediate plans of removing to Netherfield. It would also be ideal situation for Jane as Bingley and Darcy would be travelling to Derbyshire in the next few months to look at possible Estates for him to buy, and this meant that Jane would not be alone.

Georgiana had become quiet during the conversation and both Jane and Elizabeth had noticed early on and Jane having an idea on Georgiana's melancholy suggested that Georgiana stay with them at Wimple Street while the Gentlemen were Estate Hunting. This had its desired effect and again Georgiana face grew into a smile. After receiving Darcy's approval at the scheme everything was settled except for when Mr. Darcy was to travel to Longbourn.

It had been decided that Darcy would travel on their 4th day of being an engaged couple, neither wanted to part company but it was also the day that Elizabeth was to move to the Bingley Town House. Georgiana would also accompany them for the two nights it would take Darcy to complete his business in Hertfordshire. With all the arrangements settled their was nothing to do but have a teary eyed farewell, the Bingley's and Georgiana discretely played with Andrew while Elizabeth and Darcy hugged then kissed then hugged again before he left the Front room to his waiting horse. Elizabeth had never felt so sad, to finally be able to be with him and then for him only to disappear in the London fog seemed a cruel punishment for their perseverance.

Georgiana was not to saddened now that she was to stay with the Bingley's for a few days, it had also been decided that Andrew would accompany them as well. The main cause of Georgiana's reduced sadness was that she had seen Lord Myres the day before and was able to tell him of her plans. Lord Myres had not inquired what Darcy's business was that removed him from London without his sister and son and only thought him foolish for leaving them behind, including the lovely Elizabeth.

He had taking the opportunity of visiting the Bingley's the following day to inquire that their move had been successful and after receiving assurances he left after an appropriate half an hour, both Jane and Elizabeth observed Georgiana's behaviour and they were convinced that she had formed a very strong attachment to Lord Myres. Upon Georgiana excusing herself to look upon Andrew, it gave the sisters time to discuss her situation.

"So do you really think that Mr. Darcy disapproves of Lord Myres still. He has been everything a gentleman could be, attentive, concerned, charming." Jane finished her list with a wistful look on her face.

"Are you describing Lord Myres or your own dear husband." Elizabeth teased back. Jane laughed at being caught out.

"It will be you soon Lizzy, rattling off perfect qualities of a certain gentleman."

"You off course are right, it will drive you to distraction for I hardy believe it true myself. That I am to marry the very best of men who is far above all others of my acquaintance." Elizabeth smirked back. "Except for present company's husbands of course." She finished as she saw that look in Jane's eye that told her that a cushion or pillow was about to come her way. "But seriously Jane, I think where Mr. Darcy is concerned no gentleman will ever be good enough for his sister, but I have it on good authority that Lord Myres is very attached to Georgiana."

"How so?" asked Jane, suspecting that Elizabeth was not saying all that could be said.

"Will you keep a secret?" Elizabeth said, smiling to herself. After seeing Jane nod she continued. "Lord Myres asked me the other day how he would go about courting Georgi."

"He asked you?" Jane said in surprise.

"He did indeed, but he did not like my answer however, though I am surprised because I told him that he must do it the proper way by asking Mr. Darcy first for permission. I think he is scared of William and asked if Colonel Fitzwilliam could be approached instead, my laughing at him did not help."

"Oh Lizzy you can be terrible, the poor man. So has he asked permission from Mr. Darcy yet?"

"No he has not, and I asked him why at the theatre but we were unable to finish the conversation. I am sure William has noticed how attentive he has been to her and I do believe that Colonel Fitzwilliam is trying to persuade him as well, but there is some history between them that I'm not sure of, it seems to be in the way of them forming an amiable friendship."

"I wonder if Charles knows the story, maybe I could ask him tonight." Jane said thoughtfully.

"I thought you would never ask," Elizabeth said with a cheeky grin.

The few days had passed and the only news they had of Darcy was that he had arrived safely at Netherfield as was planning on calling into Longbourn the next day. Elizabeth that day had tried to imagine her Fathers response, would he tease William or remain serious, she had written a letter for her father that Darcy would deliver, in it she had confirmed her feelings and told him of her happiness at the prospects of marrying Mr. Darcy and becoming a Step Mother. She hoped this would be enough to convince her protective father of her true feelings.

On the third day they were expecting Darcy to arrive at the Bingley's for Dinner and then return to his home with Georgiana and Andrew, it was close to the time that dinner was being served and still no sign of him, Elizabeth was not overly concerned as it had rained the day before making the roads muddy but not impassable. Georgiana was also feeling like a lost soul, she had sent with Jane's approval a Dinner invitation to Lord Myres but his steward responded to the invitation saying that he had urgent business and had been called out of London for a few days.

The Hurst's and Caroline had also been invited to Dinner, Mr. Hurst was loudly complaining at the delay of Dinner but Bingley was able to quieted him down with a glass of his finest Claret. It was an hour past the time dinner was to be served and there was still no sign of Darcy, it was Elizabeth's turn to start worrying as it was not like Darcy to be late nor to send word, but she tried to reason with herself that if the roads had stopped him travelling then he couldn't very well send a messenger on to report of it.

Charles decided that dinner would be served and that a plate would the saved and warmed ready for Darcy's arrival.

Caroline unaware of the business that Darcy was called away on was also equally unaware of the location of this business, but whenever Darcy's name was mentioned she would give all her attentions to the matter, the last couple of weeks had been very grating on her. Elizabeth a little country miss was staying under the same roof as her Mr. Darcy, this was most unfair as Georgiana was much more friendly with her than Miss Bennet. The Hurst's and her had hardly seen hide or hair of any of the Darcy's and was most put out that the visits from Jane and Charles always happened when she was not around to attend with them. If she had thought better of her brother then she might have thought it was a planned that way, but she didn't and only put it down to her brother's thoughtlessness and lack of attention.

Dinner was progressing though a little strained, Caroline was talking of Mr. Darcy that...and Mr. Darcy this..... it was not putting either Georgiana or Elizabeth at ease. Charles had tried unsuccessfully several times to squash her excessive babble but it wasn't till a servant appeared with a express that she drew breath to hear what it had to say.

Charles took the letter and opened the seal at once, he noticed that another smaller letter was contained inside with the initials EB written on them, but his attention was brought first to the main letter,

    Charles

With regret I find I need to go to Brighton on urgent business and will be away from London a further few days, I will send word when my business is complete. If you would be so kind as to continue the care of my beloved family I would be most grateful.

    FD

Please be so kind as to pass the enclosed letter in private.

Charles read the letter out loud, he could see the concern on each of the ladies faces, Jane and Elizabeth exchanged worried looks as they knew that Lydia was in Brighton and wondered if he was doing business on their Fathers behalf. Caroline was miffed that Mr. Darcy was not to arrive that night, and Mr. Hurst took the opportunity in grabbing the last pork chop now that Darcy would not want it.

With the worry settling heavy in the air Louisa instructed Mr. Hurst that they should early which left the rest of the household also to retire early that night much to the relief of everyone.

The next morning Georgiana woke as early as Elizabeth and both found themselves sitting in the front room with Andrew waiting on any news of Darcy. After a while Elizabeth got up and walked around the room thinking of Lydia and hoped that nothing had happened to her

"What do you think has taking my brother to Brighton Elizabeth," came Georgiana's quiet voice.

"I do not really know" Elizabeth replied.

    "Oh," she sighed.

"I can only guess at the moment," Elizabeth said "I wonder if he is on business on behalf of my sister Lydia. But I do not know of the truth, so I should not speculate as it would not doubt be wrong. I do not have a good record when it comes to your brother."

Georgiana cast over a weary eye and gave a small smile.

"Is something wrong Georgi?" Elizabeth asked.

"No, well yes. I saw Mr. Bingley give you a letter from William last night and wondered if he told anything. I know it is none of my business but I am worried about him."

"Georgiana, please rest your mind, he gave no indication of his business in his letter but only to put my mind at ease by writing that my father has giving us his blessing. It was a very short note."

Elizabeth went over to Georgiana and gave her a hug. "I'm sure all is well and that it has something to do with Farming or Drainage or something equalling boring."

Neither believed it to be true but not wanting to worry each other kept their fears to themselves.

Jane soon walked in and joined the discussion on what Mr. Darcy's business could be. Elizabeth had taking to ease the mood by suggesting that he was sea bathing or relaxing in the waters, Jane also sensing the mood needing to be lifted suggested that is was a task there father had issued Mr. Darcy and that he could only marry is favourite daughter if the task was completed is his satisfaction, the ladies took delight is guessing what the tasks could be.

"To bring back a cup of Sea Water" said Jane

"Without spilling a drop." Added Georgi

"Maybe he was sent to talk to five strangers and come back with intimate knowledge of their private affairs." Elizabeth suggested

But it was Jane's remark at both shock and pleased Elizabeth. "No he has been sent by our Mama to find a husband for Kitty and Lydia, as you know it is Mama's fondest wish to have us all well married."

The banter continued for a while but soon the felicity of the house subdued again after another day without hearing from Darcy.

    Chapter 26

Posted on Monday, 8 July 2002

Darcy had made good time travelling to Netherfield, once there he found the staff ready and waiting for him with a hot cup of tea and a warm bath prepared. As he lay, soaking off the road dust and grime he smiled to himself as he thought over his speech to Mr. Bennet, he was not going to make the same mistake as he had made with Elizabeth, he was going to keep it simple and to the point. From his limited experience with Mr. Bennet, he knew him to be off good character but enjoyed finding fault in people and using it to his advantage. He hoped that Mr. Bennet could not find fault in him. His mind wondered back to Elizabeth and he imagined what she would be doing now, he hoped she would be with Andrew reading him a nursery rhyme or playing with him. The thought put him at ease and for the first time in a long time Darcy thought of nothing but pleasant ideas and dreams. When the water began to cool it was his queue to quit his bath and he quickly dressed and wrote a message to be sent by express to Bingley to say that he had arrived safely.

The next morning arrived with no fuss and the day seemed to be as dull as the day before, he had readied himself early for his application and now stood around like a fool waiting for the appropriate time to appear on the clock. Finally only one hour earlier than an acceptable time he found himself knocking at the Longbourn door. He held tightly to the letter that Elizabeth had written to her Father, he was very curious to know its contents but prided himself in never letting curiosity get the better of him and tried to put it out of his mind.

The maid who answered the door instantly recognised Mr. Darcy and stammered out a good morning, the worrying thought that Miss Elizabeth might be unwell crossed her mind, for what other reason would the brother of her friend be calling personally at Longbourn.

"Is Mr. Bennet home, I wish to speak to him if I may?" Darcy asked patiently as he waited for the maid to let him in the house.

"Certainly sir, he is in his library. Please come in."

Mr. Darcy followed the Maid through the corridor, and waited outside while he was being introduced.

"Mr. Darcy you may go in." curtsied the maid.

With a quick thank you he entered the library and closed the door behind him, he found Mr. Bennet standing up from his chair with a worried look on his face. "Mr. Darcy what do we owe the reason to this call? I hope my Lizzy is well?"

"Yes she is in perfect health I assure you." Replied Darcy. He could see Mr. Bennet relax a little but not completely. "I had the privilege of seeing your other daughter Mrs. Bingley yesterday as well, and she is also in good health."

"Good, good, but again I ask what is the reason for you calling, I don't suppose it is my health you are inquiring about."

"Forgive me, for this early morning visit," he paused to gather strength. "But the reason I can come to you is to apply for your permission to marry your daughter."

Mr. Bennet sighed in relief and closed his eyes briefly. He was not going to let Mr. Darcy away so easily for causing him distress and so early in the morning. "I'm sure Kitty will be delighted." He said with a smile. "I had no idea you two where so close. I had quite thought she had despaired over ever marring now that she is the only sister currently at Longbourn and the Regiment has removed."

Darcy looked at Mr. Bennet in complete shock. Was this man serious, there was no way his application was towards Elizabeth's younger sister. "Mr. Bennet I believe you mistake my intentions, the daughter I speck about is your second eldest Elizabeth."

"Elizabeth you say, are you sure? I remember her telling me that she never wished to marry. No Sir you must be mistaken, it is Kitty that you want and I give you my permission. Should I call her in and tell her of the good news?"

"Sir, please" Darcy was beginning to panic. "I entreat you, it is Miss Elizabeth I wish to marry and Elizabeth only. I have a letter in my possession that is address to you from her would you please read it, I'm sure it will provide all the details you need to clear the matter up."

"Well then hand the letter over then, and while I am reading it you might as well pour two glasses of port."

Darcy handed the letter over to Mr. Bennet, he doubted at the early hour for a drink, but did as he was bid. He could hear chuckles coming from Mr. Bennet and wondered again at what Elizabeth had written. As he turned around to give Mr. Bennet the glass he noticed that he had finished reading the letter and had securely placed it in his desk draw.

"Well the drink is no use to me in your hand Mr. Darcy."

Darcy started a little and then handed the glass over to Mr. Bennet.

"Well, Mr. Darcy indeed you are correct about your choice of daughter. It is Elizabeth that had indicated her choice of you to me. Therefore I propose that we drink to your future happiness and my future despair, but I give you my blessing."

"Thank you sir, you do not know how happy I am to hear those words."

Mr. Bennet chuckled again and the two gentlemen sat down to talk about arrangement, he was impressed that Darcy had everything in hand including Elizabeth's living arrangements and the proposed date of the wedding. He was sad to see his favourite daughter leaving Longbourn permanently but wise to the choice she had made and knew that Mr. Darcy would make her very happy.

The discussion turned to how they would tell Mrs. Bennet of the happy news and Mr. Bennet taking pity on Darcy told him to be off, so he could relate the news to her with out him having to witness it. He would however be expected to dine with them that night so he could see first hand how happy he was making her. Mr. Bennet also had to admit that part of Elizabeth's letter asked him to be kind to Mr. Darcy and not tease him too much. He laughed with Darcy as they both expressed there delight in how well Elizabeth understood them.

As it had been early the ladies of Longbourn were not up when Mr. Darcy had arrived so he had been able to exit without being noticed. Mr. Bennet had instructed the maid not to mention the arrival of Mr. Darcy to anyone.

Darcy arrived at Longbourn with slight trepidation as to what he might expect the evening to produce but Mrs. Bennet and Kitty treated him with great awe. Mr. Bennet was highly amused at his wife's inability to speck for a near ten minutes. Mr. Darcy himself was grateful at the quietness of the house. Kitty had said little during dinner but what little she had said Darcy noticed for the first time that she was not the silly little creature he perceived her to be.

It was after dinner when Mr. Bennet suggested that Darcy and himself retire to the library for a glass of brandy. Within a few minutes however a very distressed Mrs. Hill appeared saying that there was an Gentleman at the door asking to speak with Mr. Bennet urgently.

"If you please Sir," Hill struggled to get out. "There is a gentleman to see you, he said it is urgent business, this is his card." She finished as she handed him the card.

"Yes thank you Hill." He took the card and read it out loud. "Lord Myres, Earl of Wesley. Well I say, should I be honoured?"

Darcy started at this and the look on his face told Mr. Bennet that they were acquainted, "Well see him in Mrs. Hill, but take your time about it, give us a few minutes."

He turned to Darcy with a questioning look. "So Mr. Darcy you are acquainted with this Lord Myres then?"

"Yes sir I am, but I have no idea why he would call on you at this time."

"Well then we shall both find out."

Mr. Bennet turned to the door in time to see Lord Myres admitted.

"Good evening sir," Myres started to say but stopped mid sentence when he saw Darcy standing in the room. "Good God Darce what are you doing here?"

"I should very well ask you the same thing?" was Darcy's curt reply.

Mr. Bennet finding interest in the gentleman's reaction to each other but had more important matters on his mind to watch the scene unfold. "Lord Myres, let us introduce ourselves, or maybe Mr. Darcy here can do the honours as he has the pleasure and the advantage over us both of knowing each other."

"Certainly Mr. Bennet," Darcy said. "Mr. Bennet, This is Lord Adam Myres of Wesley"

"Mr. Bennet sorry for my late intrusion but I have come on urgent business that concerns your youngest daughter Miss Lydia." He stopped and gave Darcy a look. "Maybe I could discuss this with you in private as it is a family matter."

"I think we can discuss this in front of Mr. Darcy for we are all family here, except you of course Lord Myres."

Myres looked at Darcy again showing great surprise "Well this is news indeed, I must take it from that, that I must offer you congratulations, but again that can wait for I must be able to discuss my business."

Mr. Bennet gave Myres a glass of brandy and told him to sit down to relate his business.

"Mr. Bennet, I know it was very presumptuous of me but after meeting both your elder daughters I found there company very agreeable." he could sense Darcy glaring at him but continued with his narrative. "On one such visit Miss Bennet related to me that the regiment was encamped here at Meryton, unfortunately I know of an Officer here who is not the best of men and warned Miss Bennet of the danger of trusting this man. I hoped she wrote to you about him to warn you?" he waited as he received a positive but inpatient nod from Mr. Bennet. "My family is on good terms with Colonel Foster and at present my younger brother is under his command, I took the liberty of asking my brother to keep an eye out for this officer, for if he knew of the relationship with Miss Bennet and Miss Darcy he may resort to doing no good for further his wealth, it is not beyond him to do such an evil act. My worst fears came to light yesterday when an express from my brother arrived telling me that Wickham had learnt of there particular acquaintance and was now openly charming your youngest daughter. Although the motive itself has not come directly from Wickham my brother believes him to be doing this in hopes of advancing himself on Mr. Darcy fortune." He paused again to reassess the look on Darcy's face, it was showing no sign of emotion but he knew this to be a bad sign, "and if Wickham was to learn about the engagement he would most certainly act upon it."

"These are serious charges indeed." Mr. Bennet said. "What can be done?"

"If you would allow it Mr. Bennet, I will ride to Brighton and ask the Colonel to send Miss Lydia safely home. I do not believe there has been any damage done to Miss Lydia's reputation at present." Replied Lord Myres

"And I will accompany him to ensure of it as well." Darcy said commandingly. "Miss Lydia may be getting into trouble because of my connection to her, therefore it is essential that I go."

Mr. Bennet pondered for a while. "Do neither of you gentlemen think that I am capable of seeing my daughter safely home?" he asked. He delighted in the uncomfortable looks on both gentlemen's faces but Mr. Darcy answered first.

"I am in no doubt of your capabilities here, but Lord Myres knows Col Foster well, and I am definitely going to ensure that Wickham can never harm a young lady again. He has done it once to often and I can not stand by and see him do it again. Please allow us to go and take care of this business for you."

Darcy's plea was passionate enough to let Mr. Bennet resign the fact, he was pleased with Mr. Darcy and his esteem increase again, and he thanked the lord that his Elizabeth was marring a good man. Both Mr. Bennet and Lord Myres noted that Darcy had mentioned the harming of yet another young lady and wondered what he had meant by it. It was only Lord Myres that had an awful feeling that Wickham had advanced himself on Georgiana, this thought sickened him and his hatred of Wickham increase ten fold.
