    Chapter 20

Posted on Wednesday, 8 May 2002

Darcy slowly walked back in the rain bewildered as to why he had kissed Elizabeth like he had, she had looked so lovely and gave him the feeling unlike he had ever felt before, his passion overwhelmed him. He finally had to admit that he could no longer fool himself about his feelings, he was not in control of them but they controlled him.

He was still not thinking clearly when entering the house for if he was, he would have used the back entrance in order to prevent any one seeing him in his wet and slightly undressed state. As bad luck would have it Miss Bingley had been circling the front entrance in hopes of accidentally coming across him. When she did finally see him with his waistcoat and jacket in hand and in a very wet shirt that was now almost transparent it left her speechless and unable to make her voice and thoughts work properly.

"Arr Mr. D ... um Oh my ... arr."

"If you will excuse me Miss Bingley as you can see I am in no state to be seen in company." And with that he headed for his chambers two stairs at a time.

Charles and Jane were greatly amused at Caroline's lack of sensible conversion for the next half an hour, it only consisted of funny whimpering noises emanating from her as a response to any question they put to her. They had no idea what had caused this effect on her but were eager to find out, but to no avail was Miss Bingley able to convey her thoughts and only left them more confused.

A written message from Elizabeth to Jane was the first course of concern for her, the message indicated that she had got very wet in the summer shower and had subsequently caught a cold, she had decided to have dinner in her room and retire early. Georgiana looked upset and Charlotte was very surprised, as Elizabeth's health was always robust, it wasn't unusual for her to be caught in the rain and not once had Charlotte ever remembered her catching a cold from it.

With Mr. Darcy's wet appearance still the fore most on Caroline's thoughts, she purposely mentioned that Mr. Darcy had also be caught in the summer rain and of his appearance after it, she smiled at the thought of him. His well-formed chest still sent thrills down her spine. The other ladies in the room looked at each other, first in disbelief in Caroline's improper outburst and then that both Elizabeth and Darcy were caught outside, the look on Jane's face did not go unnoticed by either Charlotte or Georgiana.

When dinner was announced Mr. Darcy expressed his regret that Miss Bennet was unwell and asked Georgiana to visit after dinner and make sure all her needs were met. Georgiana of course was delighted in any excuse to be far away from Miss Bennet, especially today when she was acting so very odd. Charlotte had watched Mr. Darcy as he was told about Elizabeth's absents, and thought she noticed disappointment in his eyes, but thought no further about it as her husbands started to whisper sweet nothings in her ear. She knew he did this to make her blush and it was her own fault, she was the first to start this little game they played when in difficult company. It was to be expected that any dinner is Miss Bingley would be strained and without Elizabeth's wit to stop her advancing on Mr. Darcy it would be up to her and Richard to curb anything that might come his way, as the Bingley's were too sweet in nature to rebuff Caroline.

The evening came to a close early as the travellers were wary, and Caroline had some important dreaming to do and a letter to write to Mrs. Hurst.

Once in bed Charlotte asked Richard if he had noticed Darcy's mood over dinner, but he only responded that he didn't want to think of Darcy when there were much more pleasant things to think about, needless to say no more conversation was had that evening.

Georgiana had visited Elizabeth briefly as requested by her brother, but other things were weighing heavy on her mind and she needed to speak to him directly so she ventured to his study to find him.

"Enter" Darcy's commanding voice could be heard, he was expecting his steward and was pleasantly surprised to see Georgiana walk into the room.

"I hope it is not too late, but I would like to speak to you if I may." Georgiana began.

"Is something wrong? Is Miss Bennet illness becoming worse?" was his questions.

Georgiana was surprised at his inquiry of Miss Bennet and quickly put him at ease. "No William, she seems a little better, maybe just tired perhaps, I had a nice visit with her. I like very much. Even when she is unwell she is funny and charming."

"Yes, she is a lovely charming young lady and you could not pick a better friend or role model." His comments were two fold as much as he admired Elizabeth, it was Miss Bingley's manners through out that very evening that was distressing him the most. Every time she spoke to him she was looking at his chest and sometimes she didn't respond at all to the others that were trying to hold a conversation with her, she was acting very odd indeed. No he definitely did not want Miss Bingley's influence around Georgiana he much preferred Miss Bennet's.

"William, as you know in two days time is my first ball, and I was hoping that you would.." Georgiana paused not knowing how to proceed.

"Yes Georgiana, what would you like me to do." He encouraged.

"Please do not be angry at me."

"I could never be angry at you my dear, tell me what troubles you." He now said with concern.

"Its you, you trouble me, I worry over you. I pray every day that you will wake up to be the brother I knew so well, I so want you to be happy again." Georgiana was now weeping not daring to look at her brother. I love you so very much and it breaks by heart to see you so sad."

Darcy instantly got up and moved next to Georgiana and held her. "Georgi, please don't cry, I am recovering, but it all takes time. Please do not worry over me, you are much to young to be concerned about your grumpy elder brother, this should be a wonderful time of life for you." He was trying his best to remain calm but Georgiana's distress made his worse. "Hush don't cry," he said out loud, not only to Georgiana but to himself.

Through tears Georgiana straitened up and looked at her brother. "William, when I get sad I read Anne's letter again. It does help and the way she wrote it was the way she spoke, you can almost hear her voice as you read the words. She does not want any of us to be sad over her death, I know this is an impossibility but her words are so comforting that you can't help but feel happiness from them, maybe it would help you to re read your letter."

"Maybe I will." He said. "May be I will" He held her a little bit longer and then realised her.

"You know I am going to visit Elizabeth tomorrow with Andrew." Georgiana said, looking at him for a reaction.

"Oh that will be nice." He said not really sure what to think at this sudden change of topic.

"He is sitting up by himself you know." Said Georgiana again.

Darcy smiled. "That's nice. I'm glad you keep me informed, the Nanny hardly speaks two words to me about his progress."

Georgiana could guess why, last time the Nanny spoke to him, he had been rather short with her. She noticed that a sad expression had that came over her brother's face again, and was confused as to why he didn't visit. Georgiana was hoping to entice him to the nursery again but it hadn't worked, she needed help and thought of the one person who might be able to. "I have kept you from your work long enough. Good night William."

"Good night Georgi" he said, as he got up to give her a hug again before she departed. "I love you very much." Darcy stared at the closed door for a moment, sighed to himself and retrieved the precious letter from his wife.

The next day as promised Georgiana went to visit Elizabeth in her chambers with Andrew, the threesome played together for about an hour. Georgiana watched silently as Elizabeth took Andrew up in her arms and rocked him to sleep, she was smiling to herself when Elizabeth caught sight of her gaze.

"He is a beautiful baby is he not? She asked Georgiana, misinterpreting her smile of one of admiration for the child.

"Yes he is." Georgiana quickly replied, then blushed at the thoughts she was having about how Elizabeth would make a wonderful mother.

"Is your brother visiting him more often?" Elizabeth said, with a little trepidation.

Georgiana blushed a little more but had to answer in the negative. "No he is not. He has not told me why, but I don't think it is because he does not care, in fact I can see the pain in his eyes when he talks about him, which is only very occasionally. I wish he would open up to me and tell me his troubles, but he only sees me as a little sister and not as someone who can help." She paused briefly to ready herself for her next request. "Lizzy, I was wondering, would you ... I mean if it is not to much trouble ... if you would ... speak to him, ask him why he does not spend time with Andrew."

"Georgiana, I couldn't possibly ask him such a personal questions." Especially not now she thought. Not after she had kissed him in such a way, she even doubted that she would still be welcomed as a guest and half expected to be asked to leave.

"Oh no Elizabeth, you would be the perfect person to ask, I know William thinks highly of your opinion he has said so himself. Please for Andrews sake, he needs a father."

This last point hit home, she would have been lost without her own beloved Father, and Andrew needed a Father especially with no Mother, but to speak to Mr. Darcy again so soon after her indiscretion was frightening. "Let me think about it Georgi, and then I will only proceed if I think I can achieve something,"

This was enough for Georgiana who gave Elizabeth a hug and a grateful thank you. Elizabeth who was not suffering from a severe cold, still used the excuse not to venture out of the room that day, but as Georgiana's ball was two days away she knew that an appearance the next day was expected. That night she tossed and turned, why had she made a promise to Georgiana when she doubted her ability to ever talk to Mr. Darcy again, was beyond her.

The next morning she walked into the Breakfast room to find her two favourite friends and Jane seated around the table. All greeted her with happiness at the regained health but also that she was missed greatly and would have been amused at Caroline's lack of composure every time Mr. Darcy walked into the room. The discussion then turned to the ball that was to be held the following night. That day the Darcy's were expecting many guests to arrive and knew that there time alone together would limited to that morning. Elizabeth had learnt from Georgiana that Mr. Darcy was personally seeing to all the rooms to ensure to his guest's comforts. She was relieved at the delay in their meeting again and was glad for the extended company that meant they would not be alone together in the same room.

The day passed however without seeing Mr. Darcy for when it was lunchtime he was busy in his study and took his lunch there, and when guests of the family arrived, Jane Charles and Elizabeth discretely left for a walk around the gardens. It was when dinner was being served that Elizabeth first saw Mr. Darcy again, she wondered how he would act in front of her and all the other guest. She did a quick count and there were seven and twenty people sitting around the table, but he seemed to be the master of himself and was having a very agreeable conversation with Lady and Lord Matlock. He even once smiled, but as Elizabeth was not close enough to be privy to the remark that made his face light up she had to be content in wondering what was said. After dinner the Gentleman removed themselves to the library and the ladies made them selves comfortable in the Music Room, where conversation turned again mainly of the Ball tomorrow night but Elizabeth partook in little of it.

When the gentlemen finally arrived they insisted on a music recital for their pleasure. Georgiana was the first to be asked but most definitely said no, Miss Bingley however was more than happy to take the first sitting at the piano. While Miss Bingley was getting comfortable at the piano and asking someone for assistance with the page turning and secretly wanting Mr. Darcy to offer, Charlotte dug into Richards side which made him involuntary step forward and had no other recourse but to offer his services. Miss Bingley was not pleased with the offer but could not reject it, so with daggers in the eyes of both Richard and Caroline to Charlotte she smiled sweetly and continued her conversation with Jane.

To Elizabeth's surprise, Mr. Darcy sat next to her, he didn't speak while Caroline played but as soon as she finished he asked after her health.

"Miss Bennet, I am glad you are feeling better. It was a great concern when Georgi told me of you being unwell, I hope you are quite recovered?" his voice seemed tense and a little laboured.

"Yes, thank you." Elizabeth said slowly feeling very nervous. "I am better." She looked at him as he smiled gently back at her.

"And have you had the tour of Pemberley and its grounds?"

"I have had a small tour of the gardens." She paused slightly and blushed at the reference to the place when she last met him. "And only a little of your wonderful home, I missed the main tour, but I am sure when Georgiana is less busy she would be happy to accommodate me in another one."

"You like what little you have seen then?" he asked quietly.

"Oh yes very much, It is very beautiful and elegant."

His smile once again took her breath away. "Well if Georgiana is too busy over the next day, as I'm sure she will be as any young lady preparing for her first ball must be. Then let me offer my services to give you a tour ... You would do me a great honour."

Elizabeth was only able to stutter out a thank you before she was interrupted by Miss Bingley.

"So Eliza, would you like to play something to delight us. You know the country Aires so very well."

Again she was going to decline but Georgiana pleaded and offered to turn her pages, so with a little reluctance she moved to the piano.

"If you insist, but I will not sing as my cold I'm sure has affected my voice."

The two sat down at the piano and watched Miss Bingley claim her seat next to Darcy looking very happy with herself. Elizabeth played her song and was quite happy only having made two mistakes that no one noticed. After finishing she took her place in a single chair near the fire which Mr. Bingley organised for her and spent the rest of the evening studying the new acquaintance she had met. She observed several times though out the night that Charlotte and Richard looked at her often but it was not a look that friends may pass, but a look as if she was being discussed and discussed at length. She saw exchanging glances between Georgiana and Charlotte and her suspicions were being raised, unfortunately for Elizabeth she had little chance of talking to Charlotte as Lady Matlock drew to everyone's attention that they should retire early, as tomorrow was not doubt going to be very late.

Elizabeth retired feeling very uneasy about her friends, the only consolation was that Mr. Darcy did not appear to hate her too much, in fact he was very civil considering her great indiscretion and he had invited her on a tour, he had been everything pleasant and kind. Elizabeth fell asleep very confused.

The next day was bright and sunny and Georgiana was in an excited mood, for the first time she was not dreading her ball, her gown fitted beautifully and both Charlotte and Elizabeth had given her a lot of encouragement and she was sure she would not embarrass herself. She had not been engaged yet for the first dance but William had promised that he would dance with her if no one else asked before the night began. She wasn't the least bit discourage at not already securing a partner for the dance as she knew no one better to dance with than her wonderful brother. She had noticed that his mood had lifted slightly and wondered if it was the company or her talk with him.

Elizabeth was sitting alone in the library after declining a walk, which most others had already determined on. She had sat down with a new book she had selected and started to enjoy its pages, when she was disturbed by the opening of the door, as was greatly surprised to see Mr. Darcy enter.

"Mr. Darcy." She said as she got up to greet him.

"Miss Bennet." He paused. "I had thought that you would be enjoying the walk that had been organised."

"I was invited, but I preferred to stay indoors today and not risk a recurrence of my recent illness."

"Very wise indeed." He conceded. "Well then, maybe I can persuade you to take up my offer and let me show you the finer parts of the house you have missed." Darcy waited for an answer and saw that Elizabeth was having a hard time accepting. "Miss Bennet, I can see that I have made you uncomfortable and can guess the reason as to why, and it is that reason that I wish to speak to you off. I find, I offer you a tour as an easy way out, for if we get embarrassed over the subject then we may pretend to take get interest in something in the room."

Elizabeth had to smile at this gallantry and finally consented. She was glad that he didn't offer an arm but opened up the door in order for her to follow. After a short distance he led her into the gallery in which his family portraits hung.

"Miss Bennet, please you must allow me to offer you an apology for the other day, my behaviour towards yourself was completely inexcusable and must beg you for your forgiveness. I hardly know what got over me, I was not thinking very clearly when you came upon me and I took advantage of your kind manner. Please you must be aware that I have never done anything like this before and I will never do anything like this again." His colour had greatly increased with his speech and he watched Elizabeth reaction with great anxiety.

"Mr. Darcy. Pray do not make yourself uneasy ... It is I that should offer an apology. It was entirely my fault, I hate to imagine what you think of me for I had only wanted to help you but I failed terribly, it is I, that need to beg you for forgiveness not the other way round.

His slight chuckle shocked her, and then angered her a little. "I do not think this is a laughing matter Mr. Darcy."

"I am sorry Miss Bennet, but it seems every time we meet, we apologies for past behaviour and we both blame ourselves equally harsh." Darcy became quiet serious again and noticed that Elizabeth's agitated behaviour had calmed down.

"Miss Elizabeth, I do not pretend that I am totally sorry as to what happened, but what I would very much like to know is ... are you?" His look to her was so gentle so genuine, Elizabeth could hardly comprehend what he had just said, and struggled to find words.

"Mr. Darcy, you do not know what you are saying?" she cried, "I am quite sure you have been taking over by some illness that makes you delirious."

"No Miss Bennet, I am quiet well, and only wait on your answer, please it is important to me." This time he took her hand. "Miss Bennet, I have been fighting for some time with my feelings, I can not think well of myself and tried in vain to overcome them, but again I have failed miserably." He watched Elizabeth as she again struggled to say something.

"If Mr. Darcy knew we were about to take our garden tour I know he would want to be our guide." Caroline's loud voice was heard coming up the stairs. The two who had been standing hand and hand quickly recovered themselves and separated, turning towards a painting of a Great Uncle, Darcy quickly started related the history of it. Miss Bingley was at first pleased to come across Darcy but then took a sour turn when she saw that Miss Bennet was with him.

"Mr. Darcy, Miss Eliza there you are, I have come to tell you that we have started our garden tour but could not possibly go on with out Mr. Darcy to guide us."

"Thank you Miss Bingley," Darcy said through gritted teeth, only another few minutes and he may have had an answer from Elizabeth he thought to himself. "But as I told Georgi I have an appointment shortly with Mrs. Reynolds and would not be able to attend, if you will excuse me." He nodded to Miss Bingley with all the restraint he could muster and turned to Miss Bennet. "I hope we can continue this tour soon."

"So do I" was her quiet reply. No body saw the smile that spread across his face as he turned to find Mrs. Reynolds, and Elizabeth excused herself back to the library, leaving a very disappointment Caroline Bingley behind.

The rest of the day passed quickly and the party returned from the garden tour and retired to their rooms to prepare for the ball, as Elizabeth only needed an hour or so to prepare she sat comfortably on her bed to read a book. However the book was long put down as her own thoughts filled her head.

Finally Elizabeth was ready and she headed down the stairs in search of Jane. Jane was standing next to Charles looking as lovely as usual, they watched with interest as each new guest were welcomed by Mr. and Miss Darcy and Lord and Lady Matlock. The grand hall had been elegantly decorated and Elizabeth began to enjoy the surrounding, finally after the all the guests had been greeted the orchestra started to play some background music to indicate that the first dance was about to begin.

Charles started to walk towards the dance floor but Jane hesitated, as she did not want to Elizabeth by herself. Elizabeth sensing that she was the course of the uneasiness insisted that they dance and seated herself near some new acquaintances. As the dance began Elizabeth got up and walked around in order to get a view of who was dancing, to her surprise Georgiana was dancing with Mr. Darcy, then she remembered Georgiana telling her this may happen. There were many young single gentlemen available to dance with but she gathered that Georgiana felt more comfortable dancing with her brother first.

One of the gentlemen that had not managed to find a dance partner persuaded Lady Matlock to introduce him to Elizabeth and much to her delight found that she would not be in need of a dance partner for the next dance. He was a pleasant young man who was still at Cambridge furthering his education, he had a great interest in Literature and soon were discussing the works of Archibald Rowan. It wasn't until Colonel Fitzwilliam and Caroline Bingley stood next to them in the dance line did she notice this odd couple, from what she could hear Caroline was complaining of sore toes and wondered how Mrs. Fitzwilliam could tolerate such poor dancing. The Colonel was offering yet another apology, with a wide grin and a nod to his wife who was watching from the side. Jane and Charles had also stood out this dance and were standing next to Charlotte, and Elizabeth noticed briefly that they seemed to be in deep conversation, which raised her pique somewhat. At the end of the set Mr. Johnson her very well read dance partner escorted her to where Jane, Charles and Charlotte were standing and bid his adieus.

Elizabeth had no time to ask what Jane and Charlotte had been discussing as Georgiana glided over in a happy fairytale state and commented how wonderful the whole affair was. Everyone exchanged delights and comments about the ball, Mr. Darcy who had been talking to the Colonel after his dance also saw his sister move to the small group and they followed her.

"Did you enjoy your dance Colonel Fitzwilliam?" Elizabeth asked with a grin, as they approached.

"Miss Bingley is a very refined dancer but I am not sure if she will be able to dance again tonight, as she seems to be wearing too smaller shoes and her toes are in some pain. She told me so herself on several occasions." Richard said back.

"That is very unfortunate indeed." Said Elizabeth, while hiding a laugh.

"How so?" said Darcy, who was looking very serious but his voice gave away the slight amusement in his thoughts.

"I was under the impression that you would be graced with her as a dance partner tonight." Elizabeth said in the same serious tone.

"I was thinking that I would not ask anyone else tonight, just in case Georgi needs me to dance with her again."

"William, no you must dance again tonight, I would not be happy if you didn't and my dance card is quite full after dinner. Please promise me you will dance again." Georgiana begged.

This time Charlotte joined in. "It would be a shame indeed not to enjoy your hard work in organising a ball if you don't partake in it. Don't you agree Richard?"

"I always agree with you my dear." Richard replied with a tinkle in his eye.

"Me too." Charles eagerly agreed. "Darcy we must have you dance, or else you will patrol the dance floor waiting to pounce on any poor fallow that has asked your sister to dance. I have seen your impression of a prowling Lion King and as much as it amuses me, tonight would not be a good night to see it again."

"I do not prowl or pounce on anyone." Darcy said as he became increasingly red. "I would like to think I act very gentlemanly like and look out for my sisters best interests. If you think otherwise then it is you that is the fool."

"Come on Darcy, don't take offence, you take pride in scaring away young idle men, admit it?"

"I admit nothing of the sort." He retorted back, just then a Mr. Roberts came to claim Georgiana's promised hand for the next dance and the two disappeared to the centre of the dance floor. Darcy had watched the two intensely but quickly came back to the immediate group with the sound of laughter coming from Richard and Charles.

"See what I mean Charlotte, if that young man made one wrong move then he would have been shown the door as quick as lightening."

"Yes very amusing Richard, laugh all you like, but I will not stop protecting her from anyone that may be similar to your character." He said back in good humour.

The others had decided on dancing again stated their intentions and made their way to the dance floor, Darcy again started to watching Georgiana and her partner talking.

"I think Mr. Darcy that Miss Bingley is making her way over here, you may want to find a task that needs your immediate attention." Elizabeth quietly said so only he could hear.

This brought Darcy attention back to her and he noticed that it was only Miss Bennet and himself as the others had all left and indeed he could see the tall figure of Miss Bingley making her way towards him. With a startled look on his face he quickly applied Elizabeth for the next dance.

"Please will you do me the honour of the next dance?"

Elizabeth was equally surprised at the request and before she knew what was happening she was being led out to the dance floor and was standing next to a very pleased looking Jane, who then looked at Charlotte who then looked at an equally delighted Georgiana.

The dance began in mutual silence and Elizabeth moved though the first few steps only a little conscience of the looks being generated. She once again admired the dancing ability of Mr. Darcy as he moved through his steps in a graceful manner. She only then became acutely aware that the next move of the dance was when the gentleman moved behind the lady and placed his right arm across her waist and escorted her though the other partners. The warmth of his touch and the gentle squeeze from his other hand sent her into a chilling tingling sensation though her. Darcy was also experiencing the same exquisite pleasure of having her in his arms could not help himself as he held on tighter in order to intensify the feeling. When they arrived at the end of the line, his inability to let go almost caused them to stop the whole dance completely as the next couple came dangerously close to dancing into them. This very real mistake was enough to make them both aware that another mistake would course the room to erupt in unwelcome rumours so both decided that some conversation must be started in order to take their minds of each other.

"I think your sister is very much enjoying the ball." Was the only thing Elizabeth could come up with.

    "Yes, she is" Darcy replied.

"Will you often have more Balls at Pemberley now?" Elizabeth was hoping for more than a three-worded answer.

"I have not giving it much thought, but I imagine one ball a season will be expected. I am now seeing the merits to holding such dances and balls."

Elizabeth blushed and said no more for a short while. When they came across Charlotte and Richard, Elizabeth started to feel a little uncomfortable, the look on their faces expressed both feelings of curiosity and of knowledge.

"So Darce" said Richard, "Just learning this dance are you?"

"No Richard, you know very well that I know this dance well. It was the one your mother made me practise with her personal maid and you with your cousin for hours when we were younger."

"Then I am surprised at the mistake you made before, poor Mrs. Brownlee almost walked strait into you." He smirked.

There was no time for a rebuttal as the dance separated the couples again. Darcy tried to act indifferent to Richard's comments and Elizabeth blushed despite herself. After a few more minutes of silence Darcy was the first to speak again.

"Miss Bennet, we never finished our tour, I would still very much like to continue." His hopeful look was quickly satisfied by Elizabeth's positive answer.

"I would very much like to finish the tour, but there is a picnic planned for tomorrow but maybe the next day if you are not too busy."

"Oh yes I had quiet forgotten about tomorrows picnic."

Darcy didn't continue to speak for they both saw that they again were next to walk though the dance line, Elizabeth still had not recovered from the last touch but she now wanted to feel the warmth again, this time the sensation was just as invigorating but the couple parted at the right time causing no further embarrassment. The dance ended but neither knew if it was good or bad, Mr. Darcy led her off safely to the still grinning Richard and Charlotte then excused himself in order to see that Dinner was almost ready.

With the announcement of Dinner shortly after, Elizabeth made her way next to Jane, for she had seen one too many looks in her direction to make her wonder if Jane had told anyone about her feelings for Mr. Darcy.

"Jane, I need to speak to you on a very important matter."

"Of course, are you unwell." Jane said with concern.

"I will be if you answer my questions negatively. Please can we go somewhere a little less crowed."

Jane agreed and they quickly went to an unoccupied balcony. "Jane please tell me you have told nobody about my feelings for Mr. Darcy." Elizabeth's said as her voice became increasingly shaky.

"No, I've told no one, not even Charles and you know how hard that has been for me."

"Then why is everyone looking at me strangely, with silly grinning smiles on their faces."

"I hardly think everyone is looking at you like that, for I saw Miss Bingley and she had no sign of a smile on her face."

This was enough to lighten the mood but Elizabeth kept focused, "Please Jane, I need to know why."

"I assure you I did not start any of this, in fact I tried to stop it, but...."

"But what???" Elizabeth's anxious voice cried.

"But Charlotte and Georgiana think that you two would make a good couple, Georgiana sings nothing but your praise and Charlotte agrees. They are both sure that Mr. Darcy is more than attentive to you for a reason, and have tried to solicit my help in persuading you of him. As I said I have not said anything but it is getting very hard to stop them, especially now that." Jane stopped and bit her lip.

"Now that what?" Elizabeth said in horror, thinking that nothing else could make this worse.

"Now that the Colonel as got wind of Georgi's plan."

"Oh my. But he is unstoppable. Jane promise me that you will talk to Charlotte and stop him from pursuing this. I don't think Mr. Darcy is ready for match making."

Jane took Elizabeth's hands, and reassured her that she would everything in her power to stop them. She couldn't help but smile to herself, as Elizabeth never mentioned that he no longer would never get married and she had noticed the attachment that Mr. Darcy seemed to be forming as well. No she wouldn't interfere just encourage, her only reservation was that it had only been seven months since the death of Anne, but knowing Elizabeth this could take a while and there was not hurry especially since Mrs. Bennet was over 100 miles away.

Elizabeth and Jane walked back into the Dinning hall and sat next to Charles, there meal was enjoyable and they could tell the Georgiana was having a very successful evening, she was glowing and her happy smiles melted her shyness and nervousness away. They had a small laugh and Darcy's expense when Charles pointed out the Lion King expression again when Mr. Robertson addressed Georgiana.

After a short musical interlude for the ladies the dancing continued. Elizabeth dance one more time with a cousin of the Colonel's who he had introduced her to, and then wondered why as he was the most boring gentleman she had ever met, it wasn't until he mentioned farming and drainage that she remembered him from the Wedding.

Elizabeth also noticed that Mr. Darcy didn't dance again for the remainder of the night, and when the first guests started to retire she was among them, she quietly said her goodnights to Jane and disappeared up the stairs before anyone else noticed. Once undressed and ready for bed, she stood by the window and watched as Mr. Darcy and Georgiana said there good byes to the guests heading back to Lambton and close by Estate. The moon cast a beautiful peaceful light on them and Elizabeth could not have dreamt a more pleasant sight, she only turned away when they proceeded up the stairs to retire themselves.

    Chapter 21

Elizabeth's emotions the next morning was full of anticipation and fear, the evening had gone better than she had expected, Mr. Darcy had been very attentive and Georgiana had been the picture of beauty and grace at her first ball. There were still many guests staying at Pemberley, most of which were due to leave the following day but for now the talk in the Drawing room was of the picnic planned for that afternoon. The servants had left earlier laddered with food and drink.

Georgiana once again floated in the room as she was still on a high from the previous night. "Elizabeth how are you today?" she asked.

"I am well, and I can tell by looking at you, that you must be well also." Elizabeth smiled back at her.

"Oh yes, last night was wonderful I could have danced all night, and I even think that William enjoyed himself."

"I am glad to hear it," she said non-committed.

"Elizabeth, I was thinking seeming it is such a lovely day outside that we could take Andrew with us, and give the Nanny an afternoon off. But I could only do that with your help?"

"That would be a delightful idea, have you spoken to Mr. Darcy about it. We would need his approval."

Georgiana hesitated, she didn't want to broach the subject with William. "Very well. I will ask him, and now that I have your assurances that you will help me keep him entertained there is no reason to say no." Georgiana said, "If you will excuse me I will go and see him now about it."

Elizabeth told Jane and Charlotte about Georgiana's plan and they also agreed to help out when necessary. Shortly before they were due to depart, Georgiana appeared with Andrew in her arms and a maid carrying a large bag full of items for the baby behind her.

"I gather Mr. Darcy agreed to your plan." Elizabeth asked Georgiana.

"Yes, he thought it a delightful idea." She replied, not telling them of the long persuasive talk she had to try and convince her brother.

Once settled in the carriage all eyes where on Andrew and he managed to keep them all amused until they arrived at the pond were most of the guests had already gathered. Set out in front of them were many blankets spread out with masses of food and drink, pretty cushions were scattered around to sit on and a few outdoor chairs and tables for the elder members of the party to use. Jane, Elizabeth, Charlotte and Georgiana settled themselves comfortable around a blanket and Lady Matlock sat next to them on one of the chairs, the gentlemen on finding the Archery equipment set out, went to investigate. After a short time the Colonel returned with the news that a tournament was being organised and that the ladies were expected to participate. There was a general noise as most ladies told him that they could not and would not participate but in his typical manner did not except No for an answer.

"I will show you how to aim and shoot the arrow, there is no excuse not to try. I have heard I am an exceptional tutor, even my own Mother will be in the tournament." He said with a wink towards his mother expecting a reaction.

"Richard Edward Fitzwilliam" she cried. "I will not be induced to such an activities at my age, but I do insist that the younger ladies try. Go away and annoy someone else for a while."

Again after a general outcry they all conceded to the scheme and Elizabeth surprised them all by saying that she was looking forward to it and with the possibilities beating some of the men only increased her eagerness.

"I worry that Richard is to instruct you though." Charlotte said. "You know of his natural inclination of sporting with people. I would keep a wary eye on him if I were you, he will no doubt try to instruct you to shoot at his brother or some other poor unsuspecting soul."

Jane and Elizabeth laughed at this comment with a quiet comment of their own as how could be a possible target. For the first time Miss Bingley was fondly mentioned

So with the prospects of Archery after their refreshments they all sat back and relaxed. Georgiana found something Andrew could eat and then enjoyed some of the selections of cheese bread, cakes and drinks herself.

"Georgiana." Asked Lady Matlock. "Where is your brother? It is not like him not to attend his guests." Elizabeth had been thinking the same question and was glad when Lady Matlock asked as she didn't want to raise any more suspicions by asking herself.

"He will be along shortly. He has some Estate business that came up unexpectedly but he promised me this morning that he would definitely be attending his guests today. " Georgiana confirmed, but she was secretly worried that his urgent business may purposely take all day.

The centre of attention came quickly back to Andrew who had managed to grasp some blue vain cheese. After taking a very large mouthful, the look on his face told all of his displeasure, at first he looked quite pleased at having achieved his goal then the shock as the taste registered, he screwed up his tiny features as he spat out the offending cheese onto the ground next to him.

"Oh yes he is definitely a Fitzwilliam." Lady Matlock laughed.

Georgiana squealed with delighted "Look I think he is about to crawl" All eyes again were on him as indeed he was on all fours rocking back and forth slightly, grunting with each breath, his little cheeks were going quiet red with effort. It was Lady Matlock again who first spoke. "Oh my, I don't think he is trying to crawl."

Georgiana looked confused and then realised what her aunt was saying. With a blush and a down turned eye, "What are we going to do? Who here knows how to attend to his needs, there are no servants here at present."

"I believe Elizabeth does." Came Jane's serious reply. "A few years ago Mrs. McBride, a farmers wife had twins, Elizabeth often used to go to the farm to help Mrs. McBride out, and I believe nappy changing was one such task. I remember talking to Mrs. McBride, she was so embarrassed that the daughter of their landlord would do such things, but Lizzy being Lizzy would not be told and insisted it was the neighbourly thing to do."

Elizabeth was slightly shocked at Jane for telling such a story, what would Lady Matlock think at hearing such a thing but to her relief Mr. Darcy had not been around to witness it. The smug look of superiority was spread all over Caroline face who had been unusually quiet that day. As much as Elizabeth tried she could not be angry with Jane, for she knew that Jane only meant to be helpful when mentioning it.

"It was a few years ago, I am sure that I am quite out of practise but as there is no Nanny to help, I suppose I will have to do."

"Thank you Miss Bennet, I'm sure we are all greatly indebted to you. Especially Master Andrew." Lady Matlock said to ease everyone who was looking uncomfortable, only the men seemed amused by the whole affair even proud of the youngest gentleman for giving them such an amusement, there only regret was that the boy's father was not there to have a little fun at.

Elizabeth picked up Andrew and indeed it was obvious now that he was not intent of crawling as first thought, for there was now a distinct odor coming from him. Georgiana advised her where the bag full of supplies for him was located, and Elizabeth decided that the required change would be best carried out by the carriages and away from the picnic.

Once she had located all the necessary items she started to change him, she held her breath and worked as quickly as she could, she was almost finished but was struggling a little with the blunt ping to secure the diaper cloth.

"Should I ask how you learnt such a valuable skill Miss Bennet." Came a deep voice behind her. Elizabeth started a little but didn't need to turn around to know who had spoken to her.

"Mr. Darcy." She replied, "You shouldn't sneak up on people, especially when one has a dangerous weapon in ones hand." Her breathing was a little heavy, first of all having difficulty with the pin, then be frightened a little and now having to speak to Mr. Darcy.

"I am sorry Miss Bennet, I had no intention of frightening you, only when I arrived I saw you and wanted to know if I could be of service"

"Well now that you ask, you could fasten this pin, it is blunt and I am having difficulty."

Darcy looked worried and was about to decline his offer of help, but something told him that he should do as he was asked.

"Certainly Miss Bennet, but I thought you said it was a dangerous weapon and now you tell me it is a blunt pin. Which one is it?"

"It is both, I ensure you" she laughed, "Here let me show you what to do." With that she explained how to get the pin though all the layers of cloth and how to use his hand to protect Andrews tummy from the pin.

Darcy took the instruction very seriously and needed approval and encouragement with each step, finally the nappy was fastened and Elizabeth encouraged Mr. Darcy to complete the re dressing of Andrew.

"You do that very well." Commented Elizabeth, who was trying to think of ways to encourage Mr. Darcy to stay with Andrew. "One would say you are almost a natural at it."

"I thank you for the compliment, but I have no natural talent fort fatherhood." He paused for a while before continuing. "You know my mother used to do look after Georgi personal needs when she was a baby, one of my first memories of Aunt Catherine was when she learnt my Mother changed nappies, it was the first time I remember her advising my parents, up till then I had only thought she terrorised young innocent children. "Mothers of your rank and status do not change soiled nappies, that is for the Nanny to do, you must cease this at one." He mimicked Lady Catherine's voice. "I am very attentive to matters such as these, I would never lower myself to do such medial tasks, In all my life I never...." He stopped suddenly. "I'm sorry Miss Bennet, I should not talk of such things."

"Mr. Darcy, the insight of your family is most enlightening, and as I know the lady in question I could imagine her saying such things, you can be assured however that this conversation will go no further."

"Thank you for your confidence." He had just finished the last button on Andrew's new clothes and motioned for Elizabeth to take him.

"I think he would prefer is Father at the moment, he is very interested in your fine new coat, I'm sure he has plans for it." Elizabeth watched as he tentatively lifted his son onto his shoulder and started to soothe him, he looked very nervous and unsure about himself. "I am not very good at these things, I'm sure he would much prefer your gentle hold than my awkward manner."

"No, I think he is settling quite nicely." She replied back in a calm voice.

"Please Miss Bennet, I insist that you take him." Darcy was now getting very anxious, and Elizabeth started to get worried that she had pushed him to much.

"Very well Mr. Darcy, pass him to me." She took him and settled him on her hip, he was smiling quiet happily in Darcy's arms and didn't like being unsettled again and became a little grumpy.

"I think he misses you already."

Darcy was watching Andrew, and he had to admit that the resemblance to himself was remarkable, his hair was thickening up and the beginning of wayward curls were forming, he had the same chin and nose. "It is a pity" he said out loud.

"It is a pity about what?" Elizabeth asked with deep concern, she had watched Mr. Darcy look at his son, there was definitely love and admiration in his eyes but then the sadness washed over them again.

Darcy had not realised he had said the last out loud startled a little at the question, "I was just thinking it is a pity he doesn't look more like his mother." He finally said.

Elizabeth took her time in answering. "Maybe he will take after her in other ways, such as her friendly and easy manner, she had the talent of bringing out the best in people."

"Yes she did, didn't she." Darcy said, thinking that that was one of his downfalls, and that Andrew would have again benefited from his mothers good sense.

They both went into silent thoughts briefly, but Andrew started to wriggle for freedom. "I am afraid that he is getting rather heavy for me Mr. Darcy do you mind taking him for a while." Again Darcy's face showed the tentative worry but could not decline so he took his child once more and settled him in his arms. Andrew's face showed the delight in being able to get to the coat with the shinny buttons and smiles and gurgles emanated from him. Darcy had to smile and enjoy his sons' delight. Elizabeth leaned against the carriages where they were standing and watched the scene unfold. Darcy soon began a conversation with him and Elizabeth's smile grew wider, maybe that is all it would take for Darcy to start being in his sons' life.

"Sorry Miss Bennet, can you take him back I can't do this." He said as he carefully gave the child back to Elizabeth before she could object. He started to walk away, Elizabeth was greatly confused at this sudden change of behaviour, and was not about to let him get away so easily. So she followed after him, it took her a few minutes as Darcy was walking quite quickly back to his horse.

"Mr. Darcy." She called. "Mr. Darcy, please, wait."

Darcy had heard her calling out after him, and as he could not ignore her, he stopped and turned around.

"Please Elizabeth, I need to go." He said with dangerously deep pleading eyes.

Elizabeth realised that he used her first name, but was not intending to let him go. She knew to tread carefully, the last time she had followed him they ended up having an argument and that was the last thing she wanted to do now, and she was still holding onto Andrew and didn't want to scare him.

"Mr. Darcy. Please tell me what is troubling you. I have watched you struggle with your emotions when you see Andrew and nobody can understand why. He is a beautiful boy with gentle manners and a loving constitution, he could give you so much love and joy, if you let him."

"You do not understand Miss Bennet."

"Well make me." She said in desperation. "I would very much like to know." Elizabeth was trying her best to keep her voice calm but she was having difficulty.

"How can I give myself the pleasure of him, when it was me that deprived him of his mother. How can I enjoy his smiles and love, when his mother will never have the chance of it. I deserve no such pleasure in life.

Darcy stopped took a deep breath, closed his eyes to compose himself. He didn't know why he had told her what he was thinking, but he had finally said it and it relieved him. When he opened his eyes again he saw a tear in Elizabeth's eye and chastised himself for making her upset.

Elizabeth took in what he had just said, to her it was an unbelievable statement to make and think, but in the short time she had known Mr. Darcy she wasn't surprised by it and now wondered why she hadn't figured out what he was thinking earlier. "Mr. Darcy." She stammered out. "I can not tell you what to think, but you should not think like this, your son needs you, and you are not to blame for Anne's death. It was an awful thing to happen but you are not to blame. How can I convince you of this?"

"You can not, for it is the truth." He replied gravely.

"I do not believe it," Elizabeth said with growing confidence. Darcy looked at her a little shocked, no one ever contradicted his opinion.

"You could be a great father, you could offer him the love equivalent of two parents if you only gave yourself a chance. It is not too late, Andrew is so young and you haven't missed any of the important things in life such as his first word or steps. You need to forgive yourself, you have done nothing wrong. You made Anne so very happy, she told me so herself. She would not have changed anything so don't wish that you could have, you must realise that. Please for the sake of her memory, love your son and keep him dear to your own heart. It is what she would have wanted.

Darcy looked away, his head was swimming at what she had said, it made sense and his heart did ache. He so desperately wanted to hold Andrew and tell him how much he loved him and that it would be all right. When Elizabeth saw his tears run down his checks she hoped that he may reconsider his feelings about Andrew, she took a step closer and without a word passed Andrew to Darcy. He took his offered son and held him very tightly as if it was the first time, he was no longer tentative and enjoyed his sons' touch and warmth. How could he have been so wrong, how could he have treated him so badly. Elizabeth took a few steps back to allow him room, she realised that this stressful moment had turned into a monumental step towards a lifetime of togetherness and love, and breathed a sigh of relief. After a short time she turned slowly around to walk away so he could enjoy his private moment, but she had only walked a few steps when Darcy caught up.

"Miss Bennet, I must thank you."

She gave him a warm smile but before she could say anything she noticed two figures coming towards them. It was Georgiana and Jane.

"I thought we had lost you." Georgiana said once in hearing distance. In fact Jane and her had come earlier but had seen the two talking and could tell from there stance that they should not interrupt. It wasn't until Elizabeth started walking back to the picnic area that they thought they should make their presence know. "You have missed the lesson in Archery but it is not too late to join in, maybe William could quickly show you." She said. Georgiana never liked to miss an opportunity and she was still in awe of the sight of her brother holding Andrew and smiling..

"I think I would be quiet content to watching." Elizabeth replied.

"No please, you must join in or else the ladies team will lose miserably. And my cousin will be ruthless in his torment."

'I would be more than happy to instruct you Miss Bennet. For I am in your debt, and could think of nothing better than starting with an Archery lesson, it would be nice to see Richard come down a peg or two."

Elizabeth was a little hesitant at first but then graciously accepted thinking that it could be fun. The four walked back together all with smiles on their faces. Lady Matlock was the first to notice who was holding Andrew and smiled at Charlotte, "Your friend is very resourceful, I am sure we have her to thank for this latest change of heart."

When they arrived at the picnic area Darcy held onto Andrew a moment longer as if to confirm their new found relationship then reluctantly put the very fidgety boy down near his Aunt. He told them of his intentions on giving Miss Bennet a quick lesson and then the tournament could start. He escorted Elizabeth down to the Archery Area and he excused himself briefly while he removed his coat as the other men had done for it would be impossible to aim and shoot an arrow in the restrictions of well fitting coat. Neither Darcy nor Elizabeth noticed the fuss behind them, as Miss Bingley who was standing up for a better view fainted and hit the ground with a hard thump. Jane and Charlotte quickly attended Miss Bingley who was now very groggy and it was deemed that she could not be part of the Archery Contest.

Meanwhile Darcy quickly showed Elizabeth how to stand and hold the bow, he was impressed at her quick understanding on posture and stance, and then he gave her an arrow and told her how to hold it, aim and shoot. Her first attempt was pitiful as it flew approximately 2 inches before then hitting the ground, her laughter was contagious, and he joined in.

"Hmmm, I see we have a little work to do. Let me show you and you can copy what I do." He took the bow and arrow from her and expertly aimed and hit his target about fifty feet away, "Now you try." Again Elizabeth took the bow and tried to shoot the arrow once more, this time it went about a foot before dropping to the ground. Darcy retrieved the stubborn arrow, "maybe I will have to figure out a different method of teaching" he said, "Hold it in place and ..." he stopped as he was trying to think of the best way to explain, it was hard to put into words especially since he was thinking that the best way to show her would be to stand behind her and help her do it. "I could help you I suppose." He said uncertainly.

"Yes please." Elizabeth said not realising exactly what he had in mind. She was a little confused to why all of a sudden he looked embarrassed until she saw him move behind her. With his left hand he took hold of hers and stretched out his right arm and rested it gently on her hand that was holding to bow. She could feel the heat from his body that was lightly touching hers and she knew her pulse was racing and only hoped no one else noticed, her memories flashed back to the night before when his simple touch had sent the same wonderful tingling sensation through her. "Right." He said. "Hold it like this, pull back and .......Release." To Elizabeth's amazement it flew out of the bow and hit the target, she turned around and grinned at Mr. Darcy.

"Let me try again." She said, as she picked up another arrow.

"This time see if you can hit the centre." Darcy said back, trying to regain his self control and get his thoughts back to the task in hand.

Elizabeth looked at him in disbelief, "You think that I could hit the centre, It will be a great day indeed just to hit target."

"I will help you one more time and then you must continue by yourself. For today I believe is the day of self improvement." His voice became serious again, as he looked back fondly at Andrew playing with Lady Matlock.

Elizabeth taking up the challenge agreed and again as she got ready to aim the arrow she felt Darcy behind her, and as before her pulse quickened at his closeness. Her thoughts were disrupted as she heard Darcy say...and release...Again the arrow hit its target and she celebrated with joyful cheer.

"Right that's enough practise from you two." The Colonel said as he approached them. He had his poker face on, but he was smiling from ear to ear inside. Things were working out quite well.

The tournament started, and was progressing nicely, it was a surprise to the Ladies that Charlotte and Georgiana were most proficient at hitting the target, Jane and Elizabeth managed to aim the arrow but try as they could they could not hit the target. As expected the Colonel was very well trained in the art and hit centre each time he aimed.

"Miss Bennet, if you don't start hitting the target soon, Colonel Fitzwilliam will be most unforgiving at my poor excuse for lessons." Darcy said as he watched Elizabeth for the forth time miss the rings.

"I am truly sorry Mr. Darcy, I will have to convince the Colonel that it is not your instruction that is lacking but my skill level."

"Well perhaps I could offer more lessons if you wish." His tone went from happy bantering to a quiet hopeful voice, he watched as Elizabeth blushed only slightly and then to ease her comfort she quickly took aim and to everyone's delight somehow managed to hit dead centre.

"Congratulations Miss Bennet, a direct hit, maybe I should distract you more often." Darcy said, he was about to say more but the Colonel interrupted.

"Darcy get away, if you give her any more good advise the Ladies might win, and as gallant and gentlemanlike that I am, I have no intention of losing to ladies."

Darcy rolled his eyes and took up position for his next shot, Elizabeth watched as he again took aim and with great concentration shot the arrow into the intended spot. Elizabeth again could not help admire his physic showing through his non-coated form.

The tournament finally finished and the Gentleman took a commanding lead. While the men were busy congratulating themselves the servants had returned and had started to pack up the picnic and left over food, when the archers arrived back the older members of the party requested that they return to the house. So with the normal fuss and noise everyone headed for the carriages. Darcy offered to carry Andrew home but then realised that he had travelled on horse back, Richard who was watching this very different Darcy along with Georgiana and Charlotte offered to ride the horse back for Darcy so he could ride in the Carriage with Andrew. This offer was greatly accepted and once settled in enjoyed the carriage ride home. Andrew once again found the shinny buttons on Darcy's coat being the best thing to investigate in his immediate grasp put started to nibble on them and without a second thought Darcy let him.

His Valet on their return was less than happy at having to clean and dry his master's new riding coat. When Darcy had arrived in his chambers to change for dinner his valet as normal helped him out of his coat only to find a hand full of wet baby dribble for his trouble. Darcy had laughed at him and advised him to get used to it, well for the next few years anyway.

Dinner was like a dream for Georgiana, in the course of two days her happiness had grown ten fold. Her brother was finally showing affection for his beloved son as well as a certain lady she was so fond of, her ball had been a grand success and she had met several charming and handsome gentlemen. She now found herself eagerly awaiting her trip to London for her first season out.

    Chapter 22

Posted on Sunday, 26 May 2002

The next day saw the departing of most of the remaining guests. The few that stayed were not saddened by their leaving as it had been a very busy week and all were welcoming the quietness and peace that the country could offer, no more so than Darcy who was keen to rectify his past mistakes.

He had woken early and decided to visit the nursery, when he arrived he had found that Andrew was sleeping peacefully and the Nanny was tending to other matters out of the room. He knew he should let his child sleep but could not help himself and started to talk and caress Andrew's cheek in the hopes of stirring him. To his delight it worked and Andrew started to cry a little at his untimely wakening, that was just the excuse Darcy needed and picked him up to comfort him. This time there was no hesitation and it was like he had been a Father all his life, he lifted him up and the effect was immediate as Andrew quietly calmed down and enjoyed the attention. Darcy picked up a blanket and a child's nursery book and proceeded to take Andrew to the Library. It was never to young to start ones education, is what Darcy told himself, so quietly though the halls and stairs he walked and once settled comfortably on his favourite chair he selected a nursery rhyme and with all the imagination he could muster he started to read Humpty Dumpty.

Without the knowledge that her brother had taken upon himself to start the education of his son at 7 months old, Georgiana went for her daily visit to the nursery. When she arrived there she wasn't surprised that Andrew was not in his bassinet, but when the Nanny walked in to check on him also and not knowing his whereabouts brought the whole third floor into panic, servants where dispatched to start an immediate search and the Nanny checked the surrounding rooms. Georgiana first thoughts were to find Darcy and tell him of Andrew's disappearance. She ran to his room, but upon not finding him there headed strait for his study. On her way down the stairs she came across a very concerned Jane and Elizabeth who had heard from a tearful maid that Master Andrew was missing. Georgiana begged Elizabeth to accompany her and Charles and Jane to continue the search.

"How long has he been missing." Elizabeth asked as they quickly walked down the stairs.

"I am not sure the Nanny said she only left him for a few minutes to warm the bottle for his morning feed."

    "And where is Mr. Darcy?"

"I do not know, I looked for him in his room but he was not there, I was still looking for him when you came across me." Georgiana spoke as her voice trembled a little.

"So Mr. Darcy doesn't know his son is missing." Elizabeth asked slightly relieved. "You don't suppose he has him do you?"

Georgiana looked a little startled and confused. "We must find him quickly" she said. By this time they had walked into his study but there was no sign of him or Andrew.

"It is a little early but maybe they have gone into the garden." Elizabeth suggested.

"Yes that must be it, oh let's hope so."

And once again Georgiana rushed out of the study and headed for the Main Entrance. It wasn't until she had reach the door that she realised that Elizabeth wasn't behind her, when she looked back she could see that Elizabeth had stopped at the Library door and was listening to something with a smile on her face. Elizabeth motioned Georgiana to come over and listen for herself.

and all the Kings horses, and all the Kings men,
    Couldn't put Humpty together again....

Georgiana couldn't help but giggle at the sound of her normally very serious brother reading a nursery rhyme. Then the look of horror came across Georgiana's face, which turned Elizabeth's delight into concern.

"What is wrong Georgi." She asked

"I have sent everyone into a panic, what will William say? We have to let everyone know that Andrew is safe and well. Oh I feel so foolish for worrying so." Georgiana cried.

"It will be fine Georgi no one will think ill of you because you worried about your nephew. I will tell the Nanny that Andrew has been found and she can advise the others, there is no need to worry." She paused to regain her thoughts. "You should probably tell Mr. Darcy however, before he hears it from somebody else."

"I'm sure he will be angry at me for being so silly, he would never think me sensible again."

"I am sure that Mr. Darcy will see the sensible side of it, he could never be angry at you Georgi, he loves you to much." Elizabeth said, trying to rebuild Georgiana's crumbling self-confidence.

With slightly more coaxing from Elizabeth, Georgiana walked into the Library to tell her brother about what had just happened. Elizabeth went to tell the Nanny and Jane that Andrew had been found at that all was well. She finally found Jane and Charles who where looking around in an unused room. After relating what happened they headed down for breakfast in which they were all decidedly in need off.

They had been seated for about 30 minutes when Georgiana and Darcy walked in the room, she looked happy and Darcy was smiling as well, they sat down after helping themselves from the buffet breakfast.

"So I believe we had be bit of excitement this morning" he stated. Georgiana looked at the ground and blushed. "I'm sorry Georgi I did not mean to embarrass you. Please forgive me."

"No need, it will do me well to learn to laugh at myself." She said quietly.

"I'm sure Mr. Darcy has had a much more exciting morning. I heard that he had to explain himself to Andrew as to why he couldn't put Humpty together again. It must be difficult indeed to explain to a son why his beloved Father could not fix a broken Humpty." Elizabeth said, to lift the uneasiness.

It had its required affects and everyone laughed and enjoyed the rest of their breakfast. Lady and Lord Matlock walked in the room not long after and brought up the subject of travelling to London within the week to introduce Georgiana to the ton. The travel plans were eagerly discussed at it was agreed that in three days the remaining party at Pemberley would travel to London.

The next few days went quickly as there was preparation and packing to be done, Elizabeth was finding in particularly hard to pack for she did not know if she would ever be back at Pemberley again. Of course she wished whole-heartedly that she would be back and not as a guest. Darcy was having similar troubles keeping his thoughts in line. He now however had Andrew to entertain and keep his mind occupied and had spent many hours getting to know his son better. The Valet though pleased at his masters new found happiness was less pleased with the regular changing of clothing that was now needed, so sooner had Darcy changed than he was back to change a shirt or a jacket that had now been chewed on or wiped on with indescribable food smudges.

Caroline had recovered from her fainting spell and was know trying to persuade Georgiana to let her ride in the carriage with her and Mr. Darcy. Georgiana was now a little braver when it came to Miss Bingley and did not relent and finally the arguments from Miss Bingley ceased. Elizabeth was not looking forward to the journey to London with Caroline but at least this time it was only one-day journey.

Finally the hour had arrived and five carriages stood ready for they occupants. Georgiana came quietly up to Elizabeth. "Lizzy, I would be honoured if you would journey with us. Mr. Bingley has just informed me that Caroline has brought so much luggage with her that and there is now not enough room in his carriage for the four of you."

Elizabeth couldn't help smiling, she must remember to thank Charles later, for she had also just found out that Caroline was to stay at Mr. and Mrs. Hurst and they were to stay with the Darcy's. She worried only briefly at being in the same carriage as Mr. Darcy but with Georgiana there she could see no harm with the plan. She went to tell Charles and Jane that his idea was acceptable but as she got close to their carriage she could hear Caroline complaining loudly that she should be the one to travel with the Darcy's as she has known them much longer and was better aquatinted with Georgiana. Jane saw her coming gave her a meaningful look and in return Elizabeth gave a sympathetic look back.

When she reached the Darcy's carriage she was pleased to find that Mr. Darcy was waiting for her, and helped her into the Carriage, he held her hand for as long as he dared and then entered the Carriage himself. The beginning of their journey was a little uncomfortable as she couldn't help but look at his magical dark eyes when he looked away or outside. She knew that she was risking embarrassment if caught but she couldn't help herself.

"Well I'm not sure what has come over me." Said Georgiana shyly. "I can hardly keep my eyes open and it is not even eleven o'clock. If I fall asleep I should ask for forgiveness now."

Darcy became a little concerned. "Are you unwell Georgi. I can stop the carriage for you to take some fresh air, if that will help."

"Oh no William, I am fine just a little sleepy. Please do not stop the carriage for me."

They both went back into silent thinking, Darcy was still concerned that an illness was making Georgiana tired and Georgi was thinking that her plans to make them talk almost failed, but ever so slowly she closed her eyes and pretended to sleep. It was after a few minutes that Elizabeth noticed Georgiana's slumber and motioned to Darcy .

"I'm sure she is fine, I too find the rocking of a carriage induces sleep." She said in a half whisper.

"I hope you are right Miss Bennet." He said wishing it to be true.

After another long pause Mr. Darcy broke the silence. "Miss Bennet, I never really thanked you for your insight the other day. I am truly indebted to you and so is my son." Elizabeth tried to interrupt but Darcy would not let her, "Please Miss Bennet, hear me out. Please let me tell you how much I admire you ... You have done wonders for Georgiana's confidence and she seems to be blossoming under your guidance. I would also like to give you credit which is deserved on my own improvement, I know that you will refuse all that I have said but I will not hear you say it. Miss Bennet I had come to a point in my life where I thought all my options have ceased, but as each day comes I realise that maybe I do have a chance at more. Maybe life can give equally pleasant blows as well as the unpleasant ones." He paused slightly before continuing with his very bold request, he did not know why he needed to voice this but it had been playing on his mind for some time. "Elizabeth promise me that you will not enter into a understanding with anyone this season, promise that you will not leave my family. Please consent to staying with us through out the season. You do not understand how important you are to all of us...to me." Darcy had said the last so quiet that Elizabeth did not hear, he was leaning forward and looking intensely at her, he had almost proposed on the spot she had looked so beautiful, her eyes where full of sparkle and love. He breathed a sigh of relief that he hadn't blurted out a proposal then and there for surely he would have scared her away, at that time he did not care about the relatively short time since Anne's death but he did not want his Elizabeth to suffer town gossip and loss of reputation.

Elizabeth could hardly believe her ears, she was so sure he was going to ask the question she had only dreamed about, but no he only asked her to stay as a companion to his sister. She did her best not to cry but her emotions were welling up inside she was sure she was going to fail. She took a deep breath and began to reply. "Mr. Darcy, thank you for your complements, I am sure that they are not half correct, but I fear it futile to argue with you on that point." Taking another breath she continued. "As for your other request, I have long resolved only to marry for the deepest love and respect, and there is no one currently in town that would entice me to matrimony or enter into an understanding with." She desperately hoped that he understood her meaning. "I'm sorry Mr. Darcy. I'm sure that last thing you want to hear is my silly romantic notions."

"On the contrary Miss Bennet, I am glad to hear that you wish to marry for the right reasons, and nothing as cruel as money or status to influence you. You Miss Bennet, deserve to be happy, for you have brought much happiness to those around you." Darcy smiled at his image of them happily married, she was just to perfect to be anyone else's.

Elizabeth blushed a little and looked out the window to recover herself, and to her surprise they had reached the small town where they were to stop for lunch, as the carriage rolled to a stop Darcy woke Georgiana, and then helped both ladies out.

Georgiana told Darcy to escort Elizabeth to the Inn as she needed to speak with Charlotte about something. As she watched the two walk away she stamped her foot on the ground and headed towards the Fitzwilliam carriage.

"Georgi." Charlotte called out as she saw Georgiana walking their way. "So did our plan work? Did they start talking?"

"Arrgghh, I am so annoyed with myself, for I pretended to fall asleep as we planned I heard them talk briefly about inconsequential things, but then I really did fall asleep. I think something was said as Elizabeth was blushing when William woke me, but I have no idea what was said."

Charlotte laughed at Georgiana's distress. "Oh well just as long as they are talking together, maybe they will realise what is good for them. Do not be too angry with your self, I'm sure they will figure it out eventually. Come lets have some lunch."

Before continuing their journey Darcy insisted that Andrew ride with them the remainder of the way, and the convoy only stopped again briefly the edge of town to bid everyone a final farewell before heading of to their own homes. Elizabeth was pleased to see Caroline departing and happy in the knowledge that the Bingley's were invited to Dine the following day.

Georgiana and Elizabeth's first day was filled with shopping and a visit from the dress maker, there was a ball the following night and Georgiana wanted a new gown for the occasion, the dressmaker to Elizabeth's surprise confirmed that she could have the new gown ready in time. Elizabeth guessed that the poor girl would be working through out the night to complete it, but did not mention it to Georgiana. Elizabeth herself declined Georgiana kind offer for a new dress but to ease Georgiana pleaded accepted some new gloves for her dress.

The day of the ball arrived and Georgiana was at a lose end, she knew it was too early to prepare for the ball but could not concentrate on music or books. Elizabeth seeing her agitated stated suggested that a walk to the park might be a nice idea, Darcy who had also noticed Georgiana's restlessness agreed with Elizabeth and decided to accompany them and to take Andrew. Georgiana took charge of Andrew, which left Darcy and Elizabeth to walk together.

"Georgiana seems to be enjoying London at present" Elizabeth said with a smile as she watched Georgiana.

"Yes, I do believe she is. This time last year I would never have thought it possible. She has the true Darcy nature of being shy. I also believe that it could be the lively company that she keeps that makes her happy." Darcy said back, he couldn't help but keep the admiration in his voice.

"Yes Andrew is very lively" Elizabeth replied knowing full well that wasn't what Mr. Darcy had meant.

Darcy was about to comment back but decided against it, as he didn't want to rise suspicion. He was sure that Elizabeth liked him after all there had been that kiss, and she hadn't reprimanded him over it or departed Pemberley. He knew her well enough to know that she would, if it truly bothered her, but he wasn't so sure if she felt the same about him, as he her. He was planning on watching Elizabeth at the balls and outings to gage her feelings without pressure. With that in mind he did the complete opposite.

"Miss Bennet, I was wondering if you would do me the honour of the first dance at tonight's ball. Georgiana has told me that she does not intend to be my partner for the first dance. I was of course heart broken that I am pushed to the side so quickly, I fear she no longer thinks of me as the ideal dance partner."

Elizabeth laughed. "It is a sad day indeed Mr. Darcy, but if I can help by taking your mind of rejection then I will offer my services to you and accept. " Elizabeth heart was soaring, she was hoping to dance with Mr. Darcy tonight, but did not expect to be asked to dance the first.

They walked some more and only talked about safe topics before returning back to the Darcy's townhouse to get ready for the ball.

Elizabeth again took more time than normal to prepare, Georgiana and sent her personal maid in to attend her and she was pleased with the result, the maid had somehow managed to tame her curls into a very fashionable and becoming style.

The Bingley's joined the Darcy's at his home and then travelled together to Lord and Lady's Eltons Premier Ball. The gathering was very large as it was the one of the most fashionable balls to attend that season. Elizabeth was glad Jane was there as they knew only a small hand full of people, of course Charles and Darcy knew most of the crowd and the Ladies where introduced to many of them. When the music started up Darcy claimed Elizabeth's hand, he was momentarily distracted as he watched Georgiana walk up to the dance floor. Elizabeth couldn't hear what he was mumbling to himself but she could tell he was not happy at her choose. She must have had a look of concern for Darcy saw her and quickly came out of his musings.

The dance went smoothly and there was not a recurrence of the embarrassing mistake that they had made at the Pemberley Ball. Several times however when Georgiana and her partner where near, Darcy's face grew dark again. Elizabeth put it down to him being overprotective and returned the grim face with a delightful smile, in the hopes of bettering his mood. He had been attentive and polite through the dance but not as much as normal. After the first set had finished Darcy lead Elizabeth towards Mr. and Mrs. Bingley.

"Thank you Miss Bennet, You are a most aspiring dancer, and I would be honoured if you would dance one more set with me before the night has finished."

Darcy had regretted his distracted behaviour during their dance but Georgiana's dance partner worried him. The gentleman concerned had gone to Cambridge University at the same time as him but was a few years younger, Lord Myres was the eldest son to a very wealthy family but where Darcy had taking his studies very seriously Lord Myres had used the excuse that he might as well live it up now as all too soon he would be Master of an Estate and seriousness would set in. Darcy did not like the company he kept which included Wickham or the activities he heard about. However since the death of the elder Lord Myres, he had settled a little and the word was out that he was in search of a wife.

When Darcy and Elizabeth arrived by the Bingley's it was Charles that first commented on it.

"I say, wasn't that Lord Myres dancing with Georgiana? I haven't seen him in years"

"Yes it is." Darcy replied curtly. "I would have rather that he not dance with her however."

Jane was confused "But why? Surely he would not be admitted to such a fine ball if he was not of suitable character? Does he not come from a very fine and respectable family."

"Lord Myres chooses his own entertainment, nobody would ever refuse him entry." Replied Charles. "Well nobody but Darcy here." He said with a light laugh. Their conversation was cut short by the gentleman himself walking over with Georgiana.

"Darcy, nice to see you again, it has been too long, and I do believe its Mr. Charles Bingley. How are you all." Lord Myres said very pleasantly

"Not long enough" Darcy mumbled under his breath. "Yes I believe it has been a number of years. I was sorry to hear about your Father." He said louder.

"Thanks Darce, but life goes on and I am now very busy with my Estates, much like you I should imagine."

His pleasantness was not lost on any of the women present in the group but Elizabeth could sense that Darcy was uneasy.

"Well aren't any of you going to introduce me to these lovely young ladies." Lord Myres said

"Oh of course. Please forgive me." Charles said as he slightly blushed at his lack of manners. "I would like to introduce you to my Lovely wife Mrs. Jane Bingley and her delightful sister Miss Bennet. Jane, Elizabeth this is Lord Adam Myres, Earl of Wesley."

Greeting where exchanged with bows, curtseys and smiles.

"Bingley you have fine taste, your wife I declare the most beautiful women here." He smiled at Jane causing her to colour severely. Elizabeth raised her eyebrows at Darcy to acknowledge the rather unnecessary comment.

"Miss Bennet" Lord Myres said to gain her attention again. "I would be very honoured if you would dance the next set with me. Georgiana sung your praises while I was dancing with her but I should like to see for myself." His smile was stunning, and his eyes glistened. Lord Myres was a very attractive man, nobody would dispute that fact he had beautiful light blue eyes and dark hair to frame them perfectly. Elizabeth supposed that he could have danced with any young lady present and wondered why he would pick her, but she could not refuse and accepted gracefully before being lead away to the floor once more.

"So Miss Bennet, you come from Hertfordshire I hear? Do you like the country then." He asked.

"Oh very much, I prefer it to the town I dear say."

"So you find little pleasure in town then, it is a pity."

"No sir, I find pleasure in town as well, for I enjoy the Theatre and of course Balls, but I prefer the country life style. That is all."

He smiled again and then continued. "I see we are of like minds, Miss Bennet. I too enjoy the entertainment of town but I am always drawn back to the country."

The dance caused them to part briefly.

"And which part of the country do you call home Lord Myres?" Elizabeth asked.

Lord Myres was slightly taken back, for he was sure that everyone knew him by name and reputation.

"Miss Bennet, first of all please call me what my friends call me. "Ad", plain and simple I know but I prefer it that way."

Elizabeth looked confused, she had only known him a matter of minutes and she did not count herself as a friend. She quickly wondered if his forthright manner is what Mr. Darcy was concerned about.

    "Lord Myres..."

"No I insist call me Ad"

"I can not call you Ad, Lord Myres" she repeated again, getting a little agitated.

"Then don't use the Lord part, I keep thinking people are talking to my father." He smirked again.

"You would have me call you Ad Myres" Elizabeth said again very confused. This man was not making sense.

"Perfect Miss Bennet, you may call Ad Myres as often as you wish.

It wasn't until he had said it that Elizabeth realised why he was getting her to say this, she couldn't help laugh at herself and then at the man grinning at her so delightfully. "So you like to be called Admires do you ?"

"Miss Bennet I see that you are a quick thicker, some young ladies are still calling me Ad and don't know why, I'm glad you are different Miss Bennet. I must beg your forgiveness for playing that silly little game with you, but I find it a good why to figure out someone's wit. And you seem to have plenty of it. Maybe you could shear some with your friend over there, he seems very out of sorts, he has been glaring at me all night."

Elizabeth turned to see Mr. Darcy look their way, and indeed he had a very serious grim face, she instantly regretting laughing with Lord Myres but he had a face that you could not help but feel happy and at ease.

"Mr. Darcy is just concerned about his sister as you know Lord Myres...."

"Ah ah Miss Bennet, you must not call me that. If you will not call me Ad then call me Adam for that is my real name."

Reluctantly Elizabeth nodded her head. "Alright Adam, but only when we are not in company, it would not be proper for me to call you anything less in public."

"Well that will do for now. I suppose, maybe I will just have to find away to keep you away from company I so detest the name Lord Myres. Now tell me what where you going to say about old turnip face over there."

Elizabeth gave her best look of disapproval but knew she failed miserably, when her censured look became a smile. "That is not very kind, Mr. Darcy is just looking out for his sister. It is her first season out and he is very protective."

"Yes I gathered, for he was giving me the same look when I was dancing with her. If I was the sort of fellow that was insecure I would think it me that he disliked and not the fact that any gentleman dancing with his sister and now you would get that look directed at him. I must remember to warn every single young man present here tonight. He is worse than any Father about town.

"You forget, that he is a father."

"No I hadn't forgotten, but he is not your Father nor is he Georgiana's, who by the way is looking very lovely tonight, she has certainly grown up the last time I saw her she was a skinny little nine year old following her brother around like a lost kitten. Time has been very kind. I have no doubt she will be the toast of the town."

Elizabeth's general feeling about Lord Myres was favourable, they had finished their dance in good humour and he stayed a while longer to speak with Jane and Charlotte. He was definitely a charming man who knew all the right words and expressions to say. Mr. Darcy's mood however turned for the worse, which worried Georgiana, however her dance card had been filled for the night and they returned home at a late hour with very sore feet.

Elizabeth was getting ready for bed when she heard a quiet knock at the door, she guessed that it might be Georgiana and bid her to enter.

"Lizzy, I hope you don't mind, but I am not very tired yet I thought we could talk about the ball tonight." Georgiana shyly said. "Did you have a nice time?"

"I had a very nice time Georgi, but I only danced half the dances that you did, several young men where disappointed not to dance with you tonight, I am sure." Elizabeth said smiling.

"Please do not tease me so." Georgiana replied. "I am sure you danced as many as I."

"Not in the slightest, I must have watched you dance at least three more sets. I am not complaining the dances I had were very enjoyable, enough to give me fond memories."

Georgiana's face changed. "Lizzy can I ask you a question?"

"Yes of course." Elizabeth had a sense of deja vu the last time Georgi had been so shy about asking a question was when she had heard about Wickham.

"What did you think of Lord Myres? Did you like him?"

"I think he is a very pleasant if not a slightly mischievous man. He certainly makes friends easily and he reminds me of Colonel Fitzwilliam. Can I ask why, you ask?"

Georgiana blushed slightly. "Oh no reason, I to thought the same. Do you think he may come calling tomorrow?" she asked hopefully. "He said he might if he had no pressing business?"

"Well I'm sure he will if he can, especially since he said he would try." Elizabeth was feeling a little uncomfortable, she knew that Mr. Darcy would not be pleased but she sensed that Georgiana was rather taking with this Gentleman.

Georgiana had excused herself and went to bed, her thoughts were thoroughly confusing, she had enjoyed very much her dance with Lord Myres his manners were friendly and charming, he knew her brother from school and had nothing but good things to say about him, but his enquiry of Elizabeth and subsequent dance with her did not bode well in her mind, firstly she wanted Elizabeth as a sister and secondly she was not ready to own her feelings. Georgiana was well on her way to forming her first attachment.
