The two unlikely companions had settled at Netherfield that night in the hopes of leaving at first light, with good roads they would be able to make Brighton in a few hours. Darcy had sent an express to Bingley to explain why he would not be dinning at their home that night and to ask him to look after is charges until his return. He did not want to worry anyone by telling them of this business he was on, or who he was with but felt it necessary to state where he was going just in case there was an emergency at home.
The first hour of their trip was uneventful and Darcy was glad that they were riding on the horses instead of the carriage as this gave him the advantage on not having to talk with Lord Myres. He still felt uncomfortable at the liberties he had taken especially with Elizabeth's family, but he was happy in the knowledge that Elizabeth loved him and had accepted him. Darcy had thought that Lord Myres was favouring Georgiana but he still had an unresolved nagging feeling that his feelings ran towards Elizabeth.
After an hour the two gentlemen slowed down to rest their horses which gave the other a chance to speak.
"So I will offer my congratulations Darcy. Elizabeth is a fine women I am sure she will make you extremely happy."
"Thank you Lord Myres."
"Please call me Adam." Lord Myres asked. "Darcy I find the need to ask something of you and have used the last hour to mediate how I should ask. I know now is not the ideal time but I fear that to much time has already lapsed and I need to do it now before my courage fails me again."
"I wish you would stop speaking riddles and just come out with it." Darcy said with a sharp tone in his voice, he could not image what Lord Myres was being so hesitant about.
"All right then, if you insist on me being blunt. I wish to have your permission to court Georgiana. I find she has the sweetest, most loving nature of any young lady of my acquaintance. I have a very strong attachment to her and I think that she in return likes me well enough to bear my company for more than five minutes. In simple words I think she is the best of women and I love her dearly."
Lord Myres would have continued but suddenly realised that Darcy had stopped riding and was now behind him out of earshot. Lord Myres chuckled to himself and swung his horse around to return to the dumbfounded Darcy.
"You can not be surprised Darcy, for what other reason would I visit you and your family every second day."
"You are right Lord Myres, this is not the ideal time."
And with that Darcy spurred his horse on again into a steady run. Lord Myres shook his head and followed suite.
A couple of hours later and with no more words said the two arrived in Brighton, Lord Myres knowing the location of his brother headed the them in the right direction. After a brief discussion with Lt Edward Myres the three then headed for Col Foster's offices, careful not to be seen by Wickham just in case he absconded.
Col Foster was very happy to see Lord Myres and pleasantly surprised to see Mr. Darcy fore they had met briefly at Meryton and both had respect for each other. Col Foster himself had heard several discouraging reports of Wickham and believed him to be in high debt but as there was no formal complaint no action had not been taken. He was very supportive with returning Miss Lydia back to Longbourn and out of harms way for his wife had reverted back to her young flirtatious ways under the influence of her and he did not think it very becoming of a Colonels wife, but he kept this to himself.
He made enquires of Wickham's whereabouts and learnt that he was not on duty and had two day pass. They decided that the best thing was for the Gentlemen to settle themselves and come to his home after Dinner where they could explain to Lydia and Mrs. Foster the reason for her immediate removal.
Upon entering the home of Colonel Foster they asked to see Miss Bennet, Mrs. Foster had not seen her since after Dinner and was acutely curious to see what her young friend was up to. She kindly offered to retrieve Miss Bennet from her room. While she was gone the three gentlemen helped themselves to some brandy and sat unsettled for what seemed a long time. Finally Mrs. Foster returned with Lydia but she was very pale and had a note in her hand. Lydia looked furious and her checks were bright red as will she had been running.
Colonel Foster knew immediately that something was wrong and asked his wife the reason, but before she could answer Lydia spoke.
"Do not ask her, she is just jealous that I am the lucky one." She stated childishly. "She is upset that I am about to marry Mr. Wickham and have an very exciting life indeed we are going to Gretna Green tonight and nobody will stop me."
Lydia was pleased with the stunned look of Colonel Foster before noticing they were not alone. Lydia's response to the two unexpected Gentlemen was extreme, she latched onto Lord Myres instantly and almost ignored Mr. Darcy, not that the latter minded. Col Foster told Lydia the reason why the Gentleman had arrived and that she was to travel with them tomorrow back to Longbourn, the Col was hoping not to go into the true reasons why but with the constant wining of Lydia he looked onto Lord Myres to inform her of the real reason.
Lydia did not feel the want of anything wrong in her declarations to elope with Wickham and wondered at the fuss, all she could think of was how delighted her mother would be and catching such a gentleman as Mr. Wickham and how jealous Kitty would be.
"Miss Bennet." Started Lord Myres, "I can see you are wanting a further explanation for your removal and I can understand why, but is not the direct request from your father enough to satisfy you?"
Lydia's snort was enough to answer Lord Myres request. "Very well I will explain the reasons why to are to go home."
Colonel Foster chose that time to escort him and his wife out of the room to leave Lydia behind with Lord Myres and Darcy.
Once settled Lydia grew anxious and impatiently waited for Lord Myres to continue. "Miss Lydia what I am about to tell you I have told no one and you and Darcy will be the first to hear it." Darcy's interest was also keen but without showing it on his face he listened carefully. "The reason for your prompt removal is the very reason you have informed us tonight. Mr. Wickham has imposed upon you and has asked you to elope with him. Did you not ask yourself why he does not do it the honourable way and ask your Father for permission." He stopped briefly not expecting an answer from Lydia but purposely looking at Darcy for he still had not had an answer from his earlier request.
Lydia's replied to his question and again her replied showed Lord Myres what a child she really was, he knew then that logical arguments were not going to work.
"Let me tell you of my dealings with Mr. Wickham. I first met Wickham at Cambridge and we were good friends, but a few years later I introduced him to a close friend, where he promptly attached himself to her. I was very close to her, in fact so close I regarded her as a surrogate sister. I remarked one day that Miss Morris and I had pledged to marry if we found ourselves at aged 40 still unwed. The pledge was a playful jest of youth and neither of us held it true, unfortunately Wickham did not realise this to take the pledge at face value. He convinced her to be in love with him and to marry in Scotland, she had a moderate dowry but not enough to pay his increasing debts. His hopes in seducing her was to then black mailing me to part with a good deal of money before her family and friends heard of the engagement. He was then in a small village about 10 miles from London and needed to travel there with Miss Morris so he could let me know subtly about what he had done. However in his haste to remove himself from ____shire and to contact me he...." Lord Myres stopped and took a breath, Darcy could see the pain in his eyes but prompted him to continue. "The Chaise they were in overturned, somehow Wickham managed to recover without a scratch but Miss Morris was injured severely, by the time I was informed Wickham had left her and disappeared, she was very sick and the Doctors were not sure if she would survive her terrible injuries. However luckily or unluckily she did. She is now an invalid for life, she will never walk again and her spirits have never rallied. She lives at my home in Nottinghamshire under the care of a constant nurse, you see her family found out the circumstance and cut all connection with her. When she did recover I begged her to marry me but she would not, she blames her injuries on herself and calls it punition for her ways, she has never been the same. The few times I saw Wickham after that, he was not aware of my knowledge of this affair or that I was the one supporting her, he never once asked after her, he had no feelings for her and was only interested in her small fortune and my larger one."
Lord Myres finished his painful story, he could see that Darcy felt his pain and understood it. Lydia Bennet still did not look convinced.
"But he loves me, he told me so." Was all she could come up with.
Lord Myres rolled his eyes away from her view, if she was a sensible girl this would have been enough but she was not so another way would be needed to convince her not to do anything silly. With a significant look at Darcy he came up with Plan B.
"Miss Lydia." He said slowly. "It seems a shame that you, the bell of Brighton be taking into the tedious life of wife when you are in the prime, I would have thought you enjoyed going to balls and dancing with all the different soldiers, you could not do that if you were married. And what if Wickham was stationed overseas there would be no balls at all, you would have to stay at home as you would have not one to attend with you. Of course if you remained the beautiful young lady that was officially out you could attend many a ball and brake many a heart."
This last sentence applied to Lydia, and she could picture herself braking hearts.
Lord Myres continued, "Would you forsake those handsome young soldiers you have yet to meet the chance of dancing with you, no that would be too cruel. And what of your sister Mrs. Bingley just think of the gentlemen she could introduce you too. Miss Lydia." He said with his winning smile. "Do not be so cruel to the world but becoming a old married women before your time."
Lydia was charmed, and it had been easy, Lord Myres wondered why he had told her the sad story first. He could tell that she was nothing like her older sisters and would need flattery to make her see sense.
"You are correct." Conceded Lydia, "I would be cruel to deny me the chance of going to London with Jane and being presented. What a good joke it will be when Wickham turns up at midnight and I am not there. Oh but I should send a note to tell him."
"No need Miss Lydia, I will not personally and tell him." Lord Myres said.
"But do not be too cruel, tell him that he still may visit me and Mrs. Foster and that I may still choose him but only after a season or two in Town."
Both Lord Myres and Darcy had to control their temper, this girl was impossible she had the memory of a common house fly, but they both knew that Mr. Bennet would not let Lydia out of his sight until she was twenty and nine or some such age Lord Myres forgot his exact remark.

Lord Myres was having an conundrum of a day, he was glad that Lydia could be returned safely home with her reputation in tact but he was experiencing a feeling of emptiness inside that refused to let him celebrate. It had been a long night as the three gentlemen and two regimental prison guards had waited for Wickham at his assigned rendezvous with Lydia. To say that Wickham was surprised at the ambush would have been an understatement and the lies and pleading that came quickly afterwards was not enough to let him go free, he had been escorted of to prison with the charges of illegal gambling and dishonourable behaviour. He had been carried away cursing and swearing at both Darcy and Lord Myres about it not being the last time he would encounter them and his revenge would be sweet indeed. That thought sent cold shudders down his spine, and he vowed to himself that he would do his best to ensure that Wickham could inflict no more harm to anyone ever again.
He was also thinking about Georgiana and the fact that Darcy had never addressed him with an answer to his request, and wondered if his revelation about Miss Morris had set Darcy against him again. He was trying hard to think of a good argument to win Darcy's favour once again.
Darcy and Lord Myres had chosen to ride back to Longbourn on their horses while Lt Edward Myres escorted Lydia back in Col Fosters Carriage, there was no impropriety as Mr. Myres was acting as Col Fosters servant. Edward had been quite happy with the duty of escorting Miss Lydia but soon came to realise that a pretty face is not enough to recommend ones self. Lydia instantly sort the attention of Lt Myres as he looked very dashing in his uniform, not as dashing as his elder brother, but Lord Myres was very serious much to much like Mr. Darcy for her liking. Lydia still did not understand why they were the ones to escort her back and to that matter why she had to leave Brighton in the first place, but she started to think - out loud, for the pleasure of Lt Myres about the fun times she would have in London with her sister and what a good joke Wickham must have thought it was with her not turning up.
When Lt Myres gave his brother and Darcy an exasperated look through the carriage window both men outside could not help but smirk back at him, thinking only of their good luck at being outside the carriage and out of ear shot.
"Myres" Darcy said, he knew that Adam was wanting an answer in regards to his sister, and he was very close to giving it. The story he heard last night was important insight to Lord Myres, as it showed him to have goodness of character by being the honourable and kind toward Miss Morris. He had heard of her injuries but had no idea on the circumstances or what had happened since.
"Yes Darcy?" Adam replied.
"Do you still love Miss Morris?" He asked bluntly, Darcy knew this to be a very personal question, but when it came to his sister he would leave no stone unturned.
"I love her like a sister, if that is what you mean. I only asked her to marry me because of her estrangement from her family. I would never see her penniless and without friends. She was.... Is very important to me. As you are in regards to your sister."
Adam tried to keep calm his temper but it was difficult keeping his voice even. Darcy had no right to ask such questions, but he was sensible to Darcy's was of thinking and would not jeopardise his own chance with Georgiana even if it meant bowing to Darcy's every wish and desire.
Darcy thought about this statement for a while before answering, "If you ever hurt her in any way if I ever see a sad look in her eye, even for a moment then I will hunt you down and shackle you up and send to Swaziland."
Adam knew instantly that he was talking of his sister and not of Miss Morris and his smile grew to cover his face as he realised that this was Darcy's way of giving him permission to court her.
"If I ever hurt Miss Darcy in any way that you describe if I even think of contradicting her, I shall help you shackle myself up and walk onto the boat unaided."
Darcy tried to hide his amusement and was very pleased with his answer. He had thoughts that maybe this is what Mr. Bennet had felt and hoped for in his own reassurance of Elizabeth's safety and happiness and hope it had satisfied him. "To think in a matter of three days that I have asked for permission and have given it. It has been a very strange week indeed." Indeed Darcy's own thoughts and opinions had improved upon acquaintance in regards to Lord Adam Myres and was very please for his sister, even if she had only been out for a short time. He would never put himself before Georgiana's needs but this was good for him as it meant that he would only have to endure the one London Season in town of her being out.
Meanwhile back in Longbourn Mrs. Bennet was advised that Lydia would be returning early from Brighton, the only reason giving for Lydia returning was because of the Wedding, the fact that it was still several months away was missed by Mrs. Bennet. But it is a truth universally acknowledged that such good news of a very advantageous marriage be spread through a small town of Meryton's size in a matter of hours, and so it was that everyone who was everyone which was about four and twenty families knew of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth engagement the very next day, the very day Darcy and Lord Myres had left for Brighton.
Kitty was very excited about the match, she had been scared of Mr. Darcy at first but since the dinner he had spent with them at Longbourn, he had treated her with respect and kindness and she was very happy for her sister. She had been in the midst of writing a letter to Mary and was able to close it with the exciting news about Elizabeth.
Many visitors had come to visit over the last few days and her time at Longbourn had gone from dull to exciting. They were to expect the Gentlemen and Lydia back for dinner the next night, and Mrs. Bennet had applied for her help for the first time with a Dinner party.
Elizabeth had received a letter from her father, it was short and to the point but Elizabeth knew that her Father was pleased at the match, even with his jesting of having no sensible conversation at Longbourn ever again. Charles had received an express from Darcy that day to say that he would be in London the following day, his business now being complete in Brighton. He was to stop at Netherfield that night and would join them for dinner the next.
To Elizabeth's delight that was tonight, her heart had been pinning away while Darcy had been on this urgent business but she had kept herself amused with Andrew. She was planning on going shopping with Georgiana that day to buy something for Charlotte is a way of a baby gift and to keep her mind busy. While Elizabeth was just about to get ready to depart, she heard the doorbell ring with a flurry of footsteps and loud voices. She recognised the voice immediately.
She quickly stood up ready to accept the company of Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
``You can be at no loss, Miss Bennet, to understand the reason of my journey hither. Your own heart, your own conscience, must tell you why I come.''
Elizabeth looked with unaffected astonishment. ``Indeed, you are mistaken, Madam. I have not been at all able to account for the honour of seeing you here.''
``Miss Bennet,'' replied her ladyship, in an angry tone, ``you ought to know, that I am not to be trifled with. But however insincere you may choose to be, you shall not find me so. My character has ever been celebrated for its sincerity and frankness, and in a cause of such moment as this, I shall certainly not depart from it. A report of a most alarming nature reached me one day ago. I was told that you, that Miss Elizabeth Bennet, have united to my nephew, my own nephew, Mr. Darcy. Though I know it must be a scandalous falsehood, though I would not injure him so much as to suppose the truth of it possible, I instantly resolved on setting off for this place, that I might make my sentiments known to you.''
``If you believed it impossible to be true,'' said Elizabeth, colouring with astonishment and disdain, ``I wonder you took the trouble of coming so far. What could your ladyship propose by it?''
``At once to insist upon having such a report universally contradicted.''
``Your coming to London, to see me and my sister,'' said Elizabeth coolly, ``will be rather a confirmation of it; if, indeed, such a report is in existence.''
``If! Do you then pretend to be ignorant of it? Has it not been industriously circulated by yourselves? Do you not know that such a report is spread abroad?''
``I never heard that it was.''
``And can you likewise declare, that there is no foundation for it?''
``I do not pretend to possess equal frankness with your ladyship. You may ask questions which I shall not choose to answer.''
``This is not to be borne. Miss Bennet, I insist on being satisfied. Has he, has my nephew, made you an offer of marriage?''
``Your ladyship has declared it to be impossible.''
``It ought to be so; it must be so, while he retains the use of his reason. But your arts and allurements may, in a moment of infatuation, have made him forget what he owes to himself and to all his family. You may have drawn him in.''
``If I have, I shall be the last person to confess it.''
``Miss Bennet, do you know who I am? I have not been accustomed to such language as this. I am almost the nearest relation he has in the world, and am entitled to know all his dearest concerns and that of my Grandson.''
``But you are not entitled to know mine; nor will such behaviour as this, ever induce me to be explicit.''
``Let me be rightly understood. This match, to which you have the presumption to aspire, can never take place. Because honour, decorum, prudence, nay, interest, forbid it. Yes, Miss Bennet, interest; for do not expect to be noticed by his family or friends, if you willfully act against the inclinations of all. You will be censured, slighted, and despised, by every one connected with him. Your alliance will be a disgrace; your name will never even be mentioned by any of us. And If you insist upon it then I will insist that you are not worthy enough to be considered Stepmother to my Grandson Andrew, I will have him removed. My Solicitors have already received instructions to make it so."
Elizabeth stood still, while Lady Catherine looked please, she had played her trump card and it had the desired effect.
"Fitzwilliam would never allow it." Elizabeth stated unsure of herself. "You have no rights to remove his son without his permission." Her confidence rising again.
``Obstinate, headstrong girl! I am ashamed of you! Let us sit down. You are to understand, Miss Bennet, that I came here with the determined resolution of carrying my purpose; nor will I be dissuaded from it. I have not been used to submit to any person's whims. I have not been in the habit of brooking disappointment.''
``That will make your ladyship's situation at present more pitiable; but it will have no effect on me.''
``I will not be interrupted. Hear me in silence. I have every right, my daughter is not twelve months cold in her grave, and not once has Darcy visited me, you have influenced him to ignore and forget his family and connections, and of Anne, how I am ashamed to say she was a friend of yours. You are wrong if you think I have no right over my Grandson, he will be removed immediately and taking to his ancestral home of Rosings."
Elizabeth was wavering, she had no idea of what to do, she could not battle Lady Catherine in regards to Andrew, all she could think about was the pain that Darcy would feel on returning home to find Andrew gone. He would surely resent her for allowing it. In her thoughts she had not heard the last question Lady Catherine had asked. For the Lady herself was feeling that she was winning this battle but couldn't help but retaliate at the lack of response from Elizabeth.
"The upstart pretensions of a young woman without family, connections, or fortune. Is this to be endured! But it must not, shall not be. If you were sensible of your own good, you would not wish to quit the sphere in which you have been brought up.''
``In marrying your nephew, I should not consider myself as quitting that sphere. He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman's daughter; so far we are equal.''
``True. You are a gentleman's daughter. But who was your mother? Who are your uncles and aunts? Do not imagine me ignorant of their condition.''
``Whatever my connections may be,'' said Elizabeth, ``if your nephew does not object to them, they can be nothing to you.''
``Tell me once for all, are you engaged to him?''
Though Elizabeth would not, for the mere purpose of obliging Lady Catherine, have answered this question, she could not but say, after a moment's deliberation,
``Yes I am.''
Lady Catherine face turned red, "You must at once break this ill founded engagement and release Fitzwilliam of all obligation." Here Lady Catherine stopped again, she felt for sure that she had persuaded Miss Bennet to release Darcy. "It is my nephews duty to connect himself with a Family that Andrew could marry into, he must be aligned himself immediately with a family of high regard, wealthy and title, anything else, anyone else would be insupportable." Lady Catherine stopped to draw breath she prided herself with her frankness and have been praised for it the past, her other gift was that of persistence and she continued with her arguments. " I will not be tested Miss Bennet." She said in a calmer voice. " My intentions at this moment are being acted upon. I knew you to be headstrong and without proper feeling. I will do what needs to be done, be certain of that.
Elizabeth's heart at that moment broke into two, she knew what had to be done. "You would take Andrew away from Fitzwilliam if we married? You would really treat him with such contempt. He is a good man and deserves happiness and companionship that I could offer him. I would make him happy I assure you."
"Enough... I have heard enough. If you refuse, then, to oblige me. You refuse to obey the claims of duty, honour, and gratitude. You are determined to ruin him in the opinion of all his friends, and make him the contempt of the world. I will remove Andrew and Georgiana immediately for I know they both reside here, their servants told me so."
Elizabeth closed her eyes and a tear rolled down her check. "Do not remove Georgiana or Andrew from here, Mr. Darcy is due here tonight to take them home, I will ... I will remove myself to my Aunt and Uncles home, and will release Mr. Darcy from his engagement to me, if you will promise that you will not remove Andrew from his care."
"You have my word Miss Bennet, I will say that your manners have finally come forth, I am not a uncaring person, I will find you a worthy husband and send him to your father, I know of a good curate in the next county in need of a wife, much more in your sphere."
Elizabeth wasn't listening to Lady Catherine anymore, the words echoed in her mind with out sense. She knew that Fitzwilliam would be upset to start with, but he himself would soon see enough that the relinquished engagement was needed to keep his family together. "If you don't mind Lady Catherine I need to prepare."
"Of course you do, in fact I will stay here and you can use my carriage to take you to your Aunt and Uncle. Send Georgiana to me."
Elizabeth left the room and came across Georgiana in the stairwell coming in search of her. Georgiana noticed straight away that something was wrong but Elizabeth did her best to convince her that nothing was wrong and that she only had a little dust in her eye. Georgiana was not convinced and when Elizabeth told her that her Aunt Catherine was in the front room Georgiana guessed that Elizabeth was not telling the truth.
Georgiana watched Elizabeth for a moment and slowly turned towards the Front Drawing room to face her Aunt for the first time since Anne's death. Georgiana had kept up correspondence with her but had never received a letter back since Mary was stopped being of service by her Aunt's request.
Upon entering the room she found her Aunt with an odd expression on her face.
"Georgiana, come congratulate me on my success..."
Georgiana burst into Elizabeth's room, who was sitting at a small writing desk trying to write a letter that was impossible to write.
"No say it is not true." Georgiana cried. "Tell me that you are not to break my brother's heart by breaking your engagement."
She rushed over to Elizabeth and fell to her knees. "Please I beg you to set Aunt Catherine strait she thinks you have been persuaded to leave." Georgiana knew that her Aunt had told the truth by the look on Elizabeth's face. It was so clear by the lack of life in her eye's the redness of her checks and the paleness of her other features.
"I can't tell you any different, your Aunt has offered little choice and she must be obeyed"
"No, you of all people can stand up to her. Elizabeth don't fail me now, don't fail my brother. He will be crushed and I could not bear to see him pain again. You mustn't do this to him."
"Oh Georgi, don't you see. If I do not break our engagement, if I do the selfish thing and remain bonded to him, his love will turn to hate and I could not stand to be thought of ill by the only man I shall ever love. You see I cannot make him choose between Andrew and me I will not be responsible for breaking your family apart. The family that he has just found."
They both knew the situation to be hopeless, Elizabeth fell to her knees to met Georgiana's gaze, her own eyes filling up with tears again and both cried into each others shoulder after a while Elizabeth stopped herself from crying and looked at Georgiana. "Georgiana will you give your brother this letter."
Georgiana nodded and accepted the letter, a small sparkle can into her eye.
"What if I took Andrew now and locked ourselves away till Fitzwilliam came back, then Aunt Catherine could not take us away."
"No Georgi, your Aunt is determined to take guardianship of Andrew and I can not be responsible for that."
They conversation was interrupted by a knock at the door from a maid informing Elizabeth that the carriage was ready to take her to Gracechurch Street. Elizabeth acknowledged the maid and put her coat and gloves on. As she walked slowly down the stairs with Georgiana she also asked that her sister and Mr. Bingley be informed of the days happening as she did not wish to worry Jane about her absence. "May be I should have gone to visit Miss Bingley after all, I think today might have been the day that her company would not be so bad."
Georgiana sobbed again. "Please do not tease at such a time, I have such a fear that I shall never see you again."
"Nonsense, we are friends and we have the same friends, Mrs. Fitzwilliam, Jane. I am sure we will see each other again."
Elizabeth didn't know were her bravery was coming from, but there was something about Georgiana that made her protective. She kissed her on the check and hugged her good bye and quickly entered the carriage.
Georgiana could only watch in panic as the Carriage left the street, she vowed never to forgive her Aunt.

Darcy was feeling very wary when he finally arrived in London, his only thought was that off Elizabeth and how he had missed Andrew more than he imagined. He had firstly returned to his own home to change before dinner and to arrive with the carriage to take his son and sister home. Finally he had arrived at the Bingley's and with the thought of seeing Elizabeth again he walked up the final stairs with a spring in his step.
As was custom he let himself in and headed straight to the Drawing Room unannounced, he walked in sporting a smile at the happy thought of being reunited with his beautiful Elizabeth, what he found was in stark contrast to his own jovial mood. He first spotted Jane and Bingley standing by the fire, Jane was ghostly pale and Bingley was trying to comfort her, he then noticed Georgiana who's tears were still flowing, no one had answered his "Good evening." but he felt instantly the loss of Elizabeth's presences in the room. Something grew inside of him as he asked Bingley of her whereabouts.
Bingley had planned to be the one to tell Darcy quickly of what had happened before taking him to Lady Catherine who had insisted on staying, she had personally wanted to tell Darcy of his lucky escape and was currently resting in the Library. Bingley started walking towards Darcy, it had only been a matter of seconds since his arrival but it felt like an eternity.
"Darcy, Elizabeth has gone." Said Bingley gently.
"What do you mean gone, gone where?" Darcy said, his voice rose in panic.
"She is safe and is at Gracechurch Street with her Aunt and Uncle."
Darcy felt a little relieved at knowing she was safe and with people he trusted, but urged Bingley on for the reason why she was there and not here. "But why?" he asked again.
"Fitzwilliam."
A voice from behind Darcy bellowed, "Come into the Library with me, I have some important news to give you."
Darcy turned around to be face to face with his Aunt. "Aunt Catherine, what brings you here?" he asked knowing full well that his Aunt would not like the manner of his question.
"Come with me, I need to talk to you about our private affairs in private." The latter was said with a glare at the Bingley's direction. Darcy winced at her rudeness but went to follow her aimlessly into the Bingley's library. Before he could exit the room Georgiana rushed to him and handed him Elizabeth's letter, he knew instantly it was from Elizabeth and searched Georgiana's face for information on its contents. From the look she had given him he knew that it contained nothing but bad news and quietly thanked her for the letter before heading into the hall were he could quickly read it in private.
The others stood in silence and only the small sobs from Georgiana could be heard, they waited this way for over five minutes before Darcy returned back to the drawing room with Lady Catherine following behind.
"Mr. Bingley, Please be so good as to order my Carriage, Georgiana you will visit me tomorrow." She said with a satisfied look.
Bingley quickly instructed a servant to get the Ladyship's Carriage ready. He watched Darcy for any sign of anger but there was something about his manner that was not expected, Bingley knew Darcy to have a calm nature even in extreme stress and agitation but both Jane and Charles were surprised, he was in no doubt that Darcy was told why Elizabeth was not there, and had thought that he would be so enraged that he would hear his voice raised in anger from the Library. Georgiana wanted to believe that he would send his Aunt away and cease all contact with her but this reaction from him was most unusual. He stood perfectly still, not retreating to a window, nor did he look distraught.
The room was in strained silence again until the word was sent that Her Ladyships carriage was ready and she left in the same disturbing manner as she arrived. Darcy waited patiently until she was out of the room before uttering his first words.
"Georgiana, would you please get Andrew and the servants ready to leave as quick as you can."
Georgiana only nodded as she gave Bingley a very confused look and quickly departed to gather Andrew.
"Bingley I know we were to dine here tonight with you and Mrs. Bingley but after my Aunts account of today, I think I would not be good company. My apologies Mrs. Bingley."
He nodded towards Jane whose only thought was to slap him out of his reserved haughtiness that he had slipped into again. She could not believe he was just going to take Georgiana and Andrew home with out fighting for Elizabeth. For the only the second time in her life and the first being only hours before she was thinking that people could actually be void of all good feelings. She fell into her husbands' arms and wept again for her sister.
Bingley took his wife and held her gently as they escorted the Darcy's to the front door. Darcy's servants had been prepared to leave that night so they were quickly ready and waiting to leave. Bingley watched Darcy talk to the front carriage with the servants in it and then talk to the diver of his own carriage before entering it and pulling away, he despaired over his friend and hoped that something would spur him into wanting him to win back Elizabeth. He decided to would talk to his friend tomorrow once the shock had warn off, he knew how important it was to secure love and happiness and kissed Jane of the check to confirm his thoughts.
In the carriage Georgiana watched her brother through wet eyes, he had that look about him which told her not to question him but it was mixed up with another look, it was closer to the one she had seen when he told her that Wickham would not be marring her. Andrew fidgeted in her arms and her concentration turned from her brother to her nephew momentarily. When she looked up again she realised that the carriage had turned in the wrong direction and away from their town residence.
"William, the carriage has taking a wrong turn."
"Has it?" asked Darcy, "I don't think it has?"
Georgiana watched him, as he appeared to look out the window to study the streets. "No Georgi dear, the carriage is going precisely were I asked it to go."
"Then where are we going if not home?" Georgiana asked full of concern. Had he not realised that it was well past Andrew's bedtime and that she was near exhaustion.
"Georgiana, the only place that I can go to." He said.
Georgiana thought she noticed a softening in his eyes, "Please tell me, I have had a harrowing day and find myself in little mood for riddles." She finally said.
"Gracechruch Street," was his only answer.
Georgiana's eyes widened and a smile spread over her face.
"Do you really think I would let Lady Catherine dictate to me, who I should or should not marry."
Georgiana was about to answer but Darcy quickly continued. "Don't answer that Georgiana." After another pause Darcy took her hand and looked at her. "Georgi, how did Elizabeth react after talking to Lady Catherine. I need to know her state of mind before I talk to her, she must understand that I could never let her go, I love her too deeply, I need her too much. It is selfish of me I know, but she means everything to me and I can not lose her now."
Georgiana told Darcy about how she had found Elizabeth in tears writing the letter and that she had lost all hope of happiness, she told him of her words, "the only man I shall ever love." This information though painful to hear but was what Darcy needed to know, his spirits lifted a little at hearing her declaration and soon sank as he thought of his Elizabeth crying because of him.
The carriage pulled up outside the Gardener residence and all three left the carriage and waited for the door to be answered. After a maid had shown them into the library they only had to wait briefly before Mr. and Mrs. Gardner to rush into the room.
"Well my boy." Said Mr. Gardner, "I am glad to see you, Mrs. Gardner has been so worried about Lizzy she herself is unable to eat and I can not have my dear family in distress ... but please have a seat."
After settling Mr. Gardner continued though it was evident that Darcy was anxious to see Elizabeth. "I will take you to see her shortly, but please can you tell us what happened, the first we knew of it was when Elizabeth arrived at our house this morning. She went straight to her room and has stayed there ever since, not once have we been able to make her eat or drink. Mrs. Gardner could only comfort her from tears but Lizzy could not bring herself to tell us what happened. We thought that maybe someone had died for she was in such despair, but Jane ... Mrs. Bingley sent us a quick message telling us that your family has objected to your engagement and that she had broken it of, as duty demanded of her. To say that this was a great surprise for us is an understatement as we did not know that you were engaged to our niece, but that is all we know."
Darcy's anxiousness and despair was growing to know that Elizabeth as so close and so grieved, but he knew that her Uncle would need to be satisfied before he would be permitted to see her.
"It was not my family that objected to the marriage it was Lady Catherine." Darcy said firmly
"But she is your Aunt and little Andrews Grandmother is she not?" asked Mr. Gardner.
"She is, but as from today I can no longer call her family. She has gone beyond the bounds of her jurisdiction and I will never speak to her again. She has made complete falsehoods to compel Elizabeth to break our engagement and I am here to see if she will forgive me and take me back. I love your niece so very much, it breaks my heart to know that I have caused her such pain. Please I beg you to let me see her, to explain that Lady Catherine could never take Andrew away from me. I must be giving this chance."
Mr. Gardner smiled and nodded with reassurance. "I totally agree with you Mr. Darcy, but you must go to her, for if I know my niece she will not admit you to see her unless she is unaware of it, she will think she is doing you a service by breaking all ties between you. So I will let you into her room but I will remain outside and almost out of hearing, as a gentleman and Elizabeth's protector I must insist upon that."
"Thank you Mr. Gardener, you are a true Gentleman and I hope that I am successful in persuading Elizabeth that this is a huge mistake, for I shall very much like to call you all my family one day. I assure you the honour would be all mine."
"Yes, well I thank you for the compliment sir but lets get the difficult part over first, Elizabeth as you know can be very stubborn."
Darcy smiled briefly and then stood up with Mr. Gardner, he turned towards Georgiana who had remained completely quiet during their conversation. "Give me Andrew Georgi" he said, she willingly gave Andrew to him the child was almost asleep in her arms but did not stir too much with his removal. Mr. and Mrs. Gardner gave each other puzzled looks but did not comment on it. "Mrs. Gardner, could I please ask for your assistance, I removed my sister from the Bingley's before she had a chance to eat some supper, I wonder if you would be so kind to order her a little something, she has had such an frightful day, she must be quite drained."
Mr. Gardner quickly spoke up. "And order something for you as well Madeleine, for you also need nourishment."
With that he guided Darcy up the stairs. At the top near one of the doors he indicated to Darcy to remain silent as he knocked on the door.
"Please I do not wish for company," came a weak tearful voice.
"I'm sorry my dear, but I insist that I come in, if only for a moment." Replied her Uncle gently.
After a pause they heard her comply and Mr. Gardner opened the door and ushered Mr. Darcy inside.
Elizabeth was lying on the bed face down and was unaware that her Uncle had not entered the room, Darcy looked at her, there was so much pain and sadness in front of him, he felt crippled. He had to say something soothing and calming to make thing right he shifted the weight of Andrew in his arms and kissed him for strength.
"My dearest loveliest Elizabeth," he murmured "You can not know what despair my Aunt has put me in, but I must think it is nothing compared to the despair that you must be feeling at this moment."
Elizabeth had heard his words and had quickly sat up unwilling to believe her ears. Though she was unable to look directly at him, her hopes were being raised, but after that fleeting moment she knew that she must be strong for them both and was about to reject all applications he laid down.
Darcy had watched her face willing her to lift her eyes so he could see them, but it was clear to him that her mind was fill of concern, her eyebrows and forehead knotted and her lips were trembling.
"Elizabeth" he spoke very quietly as he sat down next to her on the bed. "My Aunt has done you a grievous injustice. But you must know that all her threats and claims are false, she has no right to take my son away from me, to right at all. Her attorney will soon be advising her that there is a long list of family in front of her before she will ever gain guardianship of Andrew.' Elizabeth still would not look at him but it was evident that her thoughts had not been swayed.
"If I knew that this had happened before I left for Charles's place I would have brought the legal documents to show you." Darcy paused and he himself was fighting back tears, "Elizabeth please look at me." He begged. "Before Anne died we discussed matters important to out baby's future, at the time I thought it was too early to think about such things but Anne insisted, in hindsight I now know why. She insisted that we guarantee that Lady Catherine would not be allowed to bring up Andrew in the possibly that we were not around, and in her will she also wrote that part of Colonel Fitzwilliam's inheritance conditions was that he would be first legal guardian while Georgiana remained unmarried. There were only the provisions that either Anne or I could change this, and I was planning on changing it to put your name first before Richards. So you can see that Lady Catherine has no legal grounds to remove Andrew from me, she also has no moral grounds, for I can think of no one better to become the mother of my baby, you are so perfect for the role.
Darcy hadn't meant for it to sound so clinical, and wanted to let Elizabeth know how much he loved her and how much Andrew loved her but before he could continue Elizabeth spoke, her speech was so light he struggled to hear her.
"Are you sure?" she asked but then continued before he could answer. "I would never come between you and Andrew."
"I know you wouldn't." replied Darcy, "And if it is possible, for I would have doubted it, that I love you even more because of today. For I know conclusively that you love me for me, not for my money and my estates but for me. And I will be dammed if any one will come between us." He said forcefully as he got up and strode around the room. Andrew started to fidget again and became increasingly agitated. Darcy did his best to comfort the lad but could not settle him, chastising himself for his momentary loss of composure he watched Elizabeth stand up.
"Give him to me." Said Elizabeth whose hope had been growing, maybe today was a test of some sort she thought to herself, maybe Lady Catherine's claims had been false and she began reproach herself for not being able to stand up to her. As she took the child from Darcy he held her by the waist embracing them both, his priorities in life were no longer of monetary matters or estate business, it was of family and love. His feelings of protectiveness and love shot though him as he held her and Andrew tight not daring to let go. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the feeling of closeness and peace. "Lets talk no more of heartache. I am here now and nothing can harm or hurt you, my words I hope have calmed you. Let me be in your life, and let me dry your tears, I'm here beside you to guard you and to guild you."
Elizabeth listened to his words, they seemed to role of his lips as if it was her own personal and private poem, she grasped him while holding onto Andrew, he had indeed done everything to calm her, his words had worked and her feelings flooded into an unguarded moment.
"Say you love me. Say you need me, and always promise me that all you say is true." A glint in her eye sparkled through and Darcy knew that the worst was over.
"Oh Elizabeth I love you more than life itself, and I wish you to say that you will share with me our love, and our lifetime. I want you beside me, and to hold me, to shear each day, night, each morning. Elizabeth I love you, and I will repeat it each day I am with you."
Elizabeth gazed into his eyes, and her eyes warmed at the sight of him she held her breath as Darcy continued.
"Please I beg you to say that you love me."
Elizabeth's smiled even brighter and for the first time was in the mood to be happy. "You know I do."
"Please say it," he repeated breathlessly.
"I love you Fitzwilliam."
Elizabeth would have said more but for the mere fact that she was now otherwise engaged, little Andrew did not mind as he found a hairpin in Elizabeth's hair that took his fancy. Their kiss was cut short by a discrete "auk hmmm" coming from the door.
"That would be your Uncle." Darcy said smiling. "I think we should honour him with your smile. I know he will be grateful to see it and he may not turf me out for putting you in a compromising position."
Elizabeth hesitated, "I'm not sure that I am fit to be seen, I must look dreadful."
Darcy's laughter could been heard from the hallway which was pleasing to Mr. Gardner.
"My dearest Elizabeth." Continued Darcy once his laughter had dulled, "You could never look dreadful, you are far too beautiful. But please, Georgiana is downstairs and she would not forgive me if I took her away without letting her see you."
Elizabeth agreed as she was anxious to see Georgiana as well, she knew how upset Georgi was and it hurt to know that she was the course of it. After quickly untangling Andrews sticky little fingers from her hair and a quick wash from her basin she met Darcy and her Uncle in the hallway. Her Uncle gave her a hug and wished her every happiness with a man that was very deserving of her.
By the time they had reached the room where the ladies where, Elizabeth's natural glow and colour had returned and she was able to convince Georgiana and her Aunt who now had a full account of the day's torturous events that she was fine. That Andrew was safe and secure and could never be taking of Mr. Darcy while he was alive. She was very thankful for her Aunt and Uncle's kind words, and her Aunt mentioned that she would help her with the Wedding preparations while she was in town. Elizabeth was still a little cautious about bringing Darcy into her Mother's company but the gentleman himself caught them all by surprise with a parting remark. "I believe your family to be one of the finest in England, for they have good hearts and would never hurt a soul, and I am truly grateful for being allowed to be part of it."
With her Uncles insistence the Darcy's were invited back for Lunch to next day and were told that if they chose to stay for dinner then that would be fine by them as well. Darcy gratefully accepted the invitation on the promise that the whole family including the young cousins would spend a day at his home very soon.
Elizabeth was sad at seeing them depart in the carriage but was happily satisfied by the unprompted kiss that Darcy had given her in front of the Gardner's and Georgiana. She could hear Georgi's giggles in the background but her mind was quickly occupied again to care.

The next few days Darcy and Elizabeth met and talked about how their life was going to be, he had brought all the legal documents concerning Andrew future. Elizabeth along with her Uncles advice were satisfied that Lady Catherine could do nothing unless what seemed that most of England were dead. Darcy had also made arrangements for Elizabeth's settlement and had sent the documents to Longbourn for her father's approval. The only details that needed to be finalised was when the banns were to be published. With Elizabeth's mother publicly announcing their engagement freely it needed to be done soon and so together they fixed upon the wording and sent it of with a servant to the Times' office.
The next day Elizabeth was to visit Jane as she had been feeling unwell of late so along with all the Darcy's she arrived as promised, Georgiana was concerned and wanted to see Jane, Darcy deciding that Charles would need an ally among so many women joined them as well and they brought Andrew along to release the nanny for a well earned day off.
Jane was better and was sitting in the Drawing Room comforted by a blanket and a warm fire, they hadn't been long when Mrs. Kemp the housekeeper announced the arrival of Mrs. Hurst and Miss Bingley. Jane sent an apologetic look to Elizabeth but as there was nothing else to do they put on a false smile and waited for the sisters to enter.
"Jane," Caroline cooed as she entered the room "Charles informed us that you were not feeling well, I hope it is not a reoccurrence of last years illness. You weren't riding in the dreadful London whether were you?"
Elizabeth just stared in disbelief as Caroline laughed at her own ill-judged joke. Jane answered politely and asked the maid to bring in some tea. Caroline of course had noticed Elizabeth but fleetingly nodded in her direction and gave as little civility as she could. Louisa who had grown tired of her sisters bad manners gave Jane a heart felt hug and best wishes for a speedy recovery turned to greet Elizabeth as warmly as she could without getting on her sisters bad side. Caroline had been distracted in giving Georgiana her best greeting and did not notice Louisa's own warm greeting to Elizabeth
There was a strained silence for a while and then the strain continued into the conversation. Caroline and Mrs. Hurst were both still unaware at this time of the engagement of Mr Darcy and Elizabeth, and Caroline had told her sister of her plan to win his attentions again. Louisa of course had advised against it but had little success and decided to consult her brother soon on the matter, before it got out of hand.
"So Jane, is Charles in at present." Louisa enquired.
"Yes, Mr Darcy and Charles are in the study discussing business at present, I would think they won't be long before joining us." She answered.
Caroline wondered about the room, she had formed a plan in her head on how she was to achieve her goal in becoming the next Mrs. Darcy and had decided that Jane could be of some use in finding out the plans and engagements of Mr Darcy, she needn't have wondered how to bring him up in conversation as the gentleman in question had just walked into the room with Charles. She instantly walked to his side claiming that she hadn't seem him or Georgiana in an age and that they should stay at the Bingley's for dinner. Darcy was at two minds about whether he should mention the impropriety of inviting guests for dinner at someone else's home or just enjoy the fact that Elizabeth would be there as well. He opted to wait briefly knowing that Charles would eagerly agree for them all to stay and dine with them, not unsurprisingly Bingley thought it was a wonderful idea and was backed up by Jane who's health had improved and was feeling the felicity of her husbands own good mood. It was settled and most of the guests sat down to enjoy an afternoon of conversation.
Caroline stuck to Darcy like glue questioning him on his resent journey without much success, she had learnt that Elizabeth had removed from the Darcy residence and had hoped for a falling out between her and Georgiana but there was no evidence of that. She also new Elizabeth was staying with her Aunt and Uncle and wanted to get across to Darcy how inconceivable it would be to have relations that lived in Cheapside, the fact that they were her relations was totally lost in her mind.
"So Eliza, it must be nice to be staying with your Aunt and Uncle at present, I can imagine you feel right at home."
Elizabeth suspecting Caroline was trying to be spiteful slowly replied. "Yes it is like a home away from home, my Aunt and Uncle always make me feel very welcome."
"It must be quiet in that part of town however, I do no suppose many people will travel so far to visit while the weather is so miserable out?" Caroline asked with a smile.
"Oh know not at all Miss Bingley, I have had many pleasant visits, and the weather is not too bad in our part of town, I have been able to walk out several times to the park."
"And which park is that?" Asked Miss Bingley.
Darcy had had enough and quietly added. "Rotherham Park I believe is the name, my sister and I had the pleasure the other day in stepping out with Miss Bennet and the Miss Gardner's, it was a very pleasant walk indeed, I should be happy to go there again."
Caroline was shocked to hear him say so but with steely determination she kept her face free from expression.
"Jane and I have such pleasant memories of that park." Joined in Bingley. "We walked there often after our engagement, I find it particularly pretty in the spring time."
Caroline was able to put in some more snide remarks through out the afternoon but they were all shot down by either Elizabeth or Darcy, if she hadn't been so preoccupied in planning her next move she might have seen the looks that Darcy was giving Elizabeth, only once did she see the ends of a smile and thought it was directed at herself.
Caroline again was able to sit next to Darcy at Dinner and was busy keeping his attention with constant prattle of theatre and fashion, she wanted to include news from Georgiana and in typical fashion made herself the annoyance of everybody. Louisa had tried her best to curb Caroline's remarks but Caroline was paying no head to her sister anymore and after dinner the gentleman retired to the Library on the promise to keep their after dinner drink time to a minimum. The ladies found themselves in the drawing room again straining for conversation. Jane wanted to find a letter that Mary had written to show Georgiana and Elizabeth so with Georgiana's offer to help they went in search of the letter with an from Jane apology for being absent-minded of late. Thus leaving Elizabeth along with Caroline and Louisa. Caroline deciding finally that Elizabeth needed to know the truth went into full attack mode with the absence of Jane and Georgiana.
"You know Eliza" Caroline started completely ignoring the look her sister flashed at her. This was becoming insuperable Elizabeth had turned her own sister against her. "It has been many months now since Mrs. Darcy's death and I am beginning to sense that Mr Darcy has indeed resolved himself to becoming sociable again, and probably intending on being part of the marriage state again. In the last few months his daily manner has improved and his faultless qualities are again shinning through, as a friend and your sister in law I only say this to put you on guard, his attentions are not to you, my dear. You may think that he would consider marrying out of his social circle, but his family duty must make it impossible, he could only marry someone with a descent dowry and good standing in society. I would hate to see your feelings injured and your heart broken." Caroline finally finished with a smile.
Elizabeth held her tongue as tightly as she held her fists. "Thank you Caroline," she forced out. "You are correct in the fact that Mr Darcy spirits have seemed to improve of late and I am very happy for him, but knowing him as I do I would think that Mr Darcy would only consider marriage for love and companionship and not social standing. You speak of Family Duty and I am sure also that he will take it into consideration to whom Andrews new Stepmother would be, when the time arrives. If he was to pick a wife that has slightly less connections and wealth than him, I'm sure they would be of equal minds and manners and then the wife of Mr Darcy must have such extraordinary sources of happiness in her situation, that she could, upon the whole, have no cause of regret nor would he if the love was reciprocated."
Caroline listened with narrow eyes, "Miss Eliza, excuse my interference, it is kindly meant, but I see the subtleties are lost on you, so I will be clear. Do not think of yourself as a possible Mrs. Darcy, I will not allow you ... of all people to interfere with the natural course of who Mr Darcy will pick next, I have been told by acquaintances that I am his first choice and I will not allow you to trick and allure him into offering his hand to you."
"Caroline ... Please," gasped Louisa.
"Hush Louisa," Caroline retorted "Miss Eliza you will fail if you enter into battle with me, I have more resources and friends at my disposal than you could imagine, I will not be stopped by the likes of you."
Elizabeth had stopped listening to her insults as she watched from behind Mr Darcy and Charles walk in the room, Darcy had indicated to Charles not to say a word and with a booming voice spoke up. "Miss Bingley, if you insult my fiancée once more then I will have to remove myself, my family and my fiancée from this house immediately."
"No need Darcy, if my sister sees fit to open her mouth one more time this evening then I will evict her myself." Charles said angrily at Caroline.
In turn Caroline had gone from red to while to red again and she could only splutter out, "Fiancée"
"Right, that's it." Cried Bingley, "You are going. I warned you Caroline, one word and you would be gone and indeed not 12 seconds after my warning you spoke." He turned on his heels and ordered an amused but poker faced servant to arrange for his carriage to deliver Miss Bingley to the Hurst's home.
Caroline stood up with all the dignity she could muster, completely ignoring Elizabeth turned to Darcy. "You will regret your decisions till the day you die, when your family and son shun you for picking a common country girl for a wife, she will drag you through the mud for that is the only place she will ever feel comfortable."
Everyone stared in silence, by this time Jane had walked in the room and try as she could, she could not say a single word to make this ugly scene disappear.
Darcy walked over to Elizabeth and took her hand he whispered in her ear some words of love and reassurance, he helped her to her feet and escorted out of the room past where Caroline stood and into the small music room. Once in the privacy of the music room, he held her tight and soothed her.
"I am so sorry, that I left you in that situation, I promise that it will never happen again."
Elizabeth relaxed in his strong arms and felt the warmth of his body next to hers. "Do not concern your self Fitzwilliam, it is not your fault that Caroline is the way she is. You are here now and that is what is important." After a meaningful pause Elizabeth continued, Darcy had watched her thoughtfulness with interest and her eyes showed off what was happening in her mind, they went from thought to mischief in a single second. "She has done you a favour in her outburst I believe."
"A favour!" he asked in surprise, "How has that spiteful woman done me a favour, she has insulted you your family, and mine, no I can not see any favour done here."
"She has made me even more determined to ensure that every moment from the day we are married that you are perfectly happy and surrounded in love. I can not be swayed from my resolve Mr Darcy so do not even attempt it."
"Indeed I shall not." He smiled as he bend his head to come level with hers, they again sealed their agreement with a tender kiss that lingered for some minutes. Darcy could feel the passion deep inside, it felt so right and so good, he knew he should stop but could not. After pulling away reluctantly he spoke in a soft whisper. "Who's silly idea was it to wait another few months before marrying?"
"I believe sir it was yours." Was the delightful laughing response from Elizabeth.
"Hmmm," he said again as he reclaimed Elizabeth's lips.
After a while they could hear Bingley close the front door with a slam and realised that they should go and speak to Bingley to calm his normally passive nerves. Jane was the first to see them enter the room and went directly to Elizabeth, after reassurances to all present including Louisa that Caroline had done no harm to them and only herself did they reluctantly agree to forget the awful incident. Indeed tomorrow the papers would publish their engagement and she could do no further damage.
Louisa felt terrible and left shortly afterwards to the comforts of her own husband who she had hoped had returned from the club she was not looking forward to seeing Caroline again. She promised Charles that she would talk to Caroline and make her apologies for her outburst but no one felt sorry for her and no one was in any hurry to see her again but this had to be done, Elizabeth secretly wondered if it would happen in her lifetime.
The weeks is London speed by quickly, Elizabeth and Darcy met almost everyday for a walk in the park near her Aunt and Uncles house and most weeks the families dined together. Caroline had refused to apologise to the Bingley's or Mr Darcy, for she was certain that it would be a matter of time till he realised his mistake and come for her. She had asked Louisa to pass on the message to Darcy saying that she would wait for him, but Louisa never passed the message on. In time Caroline through the Hurst's persuasion went to visit her other sister up north.
There was also much happiness for all, Jane and Charles had just announced they were also expecting their first child and Richard and Charlotte had just finished the nursery ready for their new arrival. They needed to finish their London residence earlier than expected as it had been decided in order for Charlotte to attend Elizabeth's wedding that she would need to travel to Lucas Lodge a month prior to the wedding as her doctor had advised against travelling at the later stages of her confinement. This was a wonderful development for Charlotte as she had wished to deliver her baby in Meryton amongst her family and have the doctor that had delivered her in attendance as well. As much as she had grown to love Darcy, and was extremely happy for Elizabeth she was grateful that she would be away from his constant worrying and fussing over her condition, not that he directly said anything to her but she had been told by Richard that his cousin had offered to pay for the best doctors in London and that she should be confined to bed most of the day to keep her in health, she knew that Darcy was worried about her and was flattered by the attention but enough was enough and she was doing well.
Georgiana had is a few months gone under a remarkable change, she was now confident talented young lady that delighted in playing the pianoforte in front a people and being a hostess to the many visitors. She was taking care of Andrew with Elizabeth's help and was encouraging him to take his first steps unaided, he was very strong for his age and all thoughts on his health being inherited from his Mother vanished, it wouldn't be long until he would take his first steps.
However Georgiana found that she was splitting her time with another handsome gentleman, he called several times a week and in turn he had convinced her brother that when attending Miss Elizabeth that he should be allowed to escort Miss Darcy in the park as well, and so it was for many weeks the two couples could be seen walking slightly apart from each other enjoying the good whether and the flowers in the park. Of course Darcy's attention would sometimes sway from Elizabeth to his sister, but Elizabeth always managed to gain his attention again with either a pout, a smile, or a remark, all of which brought Darcy's attention immediately back to the women who was going to be his wife.
On the last ball of the season the Darcy party was to be the smallest in attendance. Jane and Charles decided not to go as Jane was feeling tired and Charlotte and Richard had already left for Meryton. Elizabeth had invited her Aunt and Uncle to go but one of their children had become sick and they did not want to leave him for the evening. So the three walked up the stairs, two were content but Georgiana was busy looking out for Lord Myres, he had indicated that business might keep him away from the Evenings events but he had promised to do everything in his power to make it. Georgiana had received a wonderful bouquet of flowers from him earlier that day but she could not see him in the crowd.
She stood by Darcy and Elizabeth quietly not wanting to attract the notice of any gentleman just in case Lord Myres ware to arrive and then she would be free to dance the first two sets with him, but alas a young man of good standing approached Darcy and asked permission to dance with Miss Darcy. Darcy shot a glance at Georgi and could tell that she did not wish it, but as he had asked properly and he was from a respectable family he told the young man that he better ask the lady herself.
Georgiana reluctantly but graciously accepted and followed him onto the dance floor, and was pleased that Elizabeth and Darcy had followed her into in the dance line. She moved the correct way and gained compliments from others about her dancing abilities but took no pleasure from them. The dancing was not the same when not partnered by Lord Myres she missed his smiles and his witty conversation and longed to see his deep dark eyes again.
At the end of the set it was very obvious to the young man who had held high hopes of dancing again with Miss Darcy, that he was not to be given the pleasure of her continuing company, but being brought up well he escorted her to the side of the room next to Mr Darcy and Miss Bennet and asked her if she required a glass of punch. Georgiana politely said yes and regretted being somewhat distant with the nice young man whose name she could not remember.
"Georgiana, you must show a little interest, he is a good man that shows you great respect." Darcy said, he had noticed her spirits where low and knew exactly why but he hated seeing her like this and was a little lost at what to do.
Georgiana smiled back but downcast her eyes almost immediately. She did not notice that a different gentleman quietly approached her.
"Milady, my torch burns for you. Just one smile from you is fuel enough to cause a blaze."
Georgiana looked up immediately and beamed a smile back, it was Lord Myres and he had made it after all.
"Do you know how difficult it was watching you dance with that Gentleman and not one smile directed at me. But never mind I sent him on his way and I have come with your intended refreshment instead, I hope you do not mind?" He grinned, his heart had been touched and his ego had greatly grown to know that his little Georgi had missed him.
"Thank you sir," she said trying to think of something else to say but Lord Myres quickly followed up his feeling of triumph by asking her for the next dance, which was of course accepted.
They both missed the amused face of Elizabeth and the rolling of Darcy's eyes.

The time had finally arrived, one more night at Longbourn and one last night as Miss Bennet. Elizabeth thought the day would never arrive but tomorrow she would be marring the one that she was totally in love and devoted to.
To Mrs. Bennet's continued disappointment and horror the wedding was not to be a big affair. She had assumed that all the neighbours from the surrounding areas were to be invited but it was to be a small family affair that Darcy and Elizabeth had requested, and Mrs. Bennet being somewhat afraid of Darcy did not put up too much opposition just in case he decided not to go ahead and marry Elizabeth. The rest of the family shook there heads at her reasoning but were happy with the outcome and did not comment.
Elizabeth was sitting in her room admiring the beautiful bunch of wild flowers Darcy had gathered that very day for her. She could tell he was happy as he lead her into a meadow filled with spring flowers and magical armours and had asked her which she found the most delightful to her. His good spirits were radiating through everyone that he met, even Lydia was more agreeable that day.
A knock at the door broke her happy daydream as Elizabeth snapped out of it to be confronted by Mrs. Bennet. "There you are my child, I have come to talk to you about your duties as a wife"
Elizabeth gritted her teeth and tried not to roll her eyes, Jane had told her about Mothers "Duty as a Wife" speech and had advised to ignore all that was said and occasionally nod and say yes in the right places. Jane would not elaborate on what was said, but with the help of her Aunt and Jane Elizabeth had a fear idea of what to expect in the real world and not her mother's strange nonsensical notions.
"Are you listening Elizabeth, don't think Mr. Darcy will tolerate your daydreams when he is speaking to you" snapped her mother.
"Yes mother, I am listening" Elizabeth lied.
Mr. Darcy will expect you to do what ever you are told, I have tried to teach you this lesson from a early age but you always insisted on doing what you wanted and when you wanted, scampering all around the country side is not a very lady like thing to do, especially now that you are going to be Mrs. Darcy, I would limit all exercise to 10 minutes a day and always, always take the carriage, do I make myself clear Elizabeth."
Elizabeth could hear the high pitch voice of her mother but was taking little in, however she could sense enough when an answer was expected and nodded her head in agreement. Elizabeth's thoughts went momentarily into shock as she heard her mother's next statement.
"Good, now about your bedroom duties...."
Elizabeth quickly thought about her favourite nursery rhyme and sung it in her head very loud, her interest in this matter was real but she was not going to have her mother as a teacher or a guild, Jane had provided little information other than, do not be scared and trust the one you love. Elizabeth thought that in Jane's perfect world that would be enough to ease her fears but she was still apprehensive, but one thing was sure, she did trust was Fitzwilliam and she loved him very dearly and knew that he loved her with the same intensity. By the time Elizabeth stopped thinking of her beloved she was hearing signs of her mother winding down and quickly snapped her attention back to her mother.
"... So just do nothing and you will be fine." Mrs. Bennet finished, looking a little flushed.
"Thank you mother for your very insightful talk, it will be of great help to me. And just think you will only have to do this talk another two times." Elizabeth said, with a glint in her eye.
"Hmmm quite true" she said wistfully "Good night Elizabeth, make sure you get plenty of sleep tonight, you do not want Mr. Darcy running away in fright because you have big bags underneath your eyes."
"Good night Mother" Elizabeth said as she watched her mother exit the room. Elizabeth was far to excited about tomorrow to go to sleep straight away, but as she was reading her eye lids grew heavy and she drifted to sleep with happy thoughts and happy dreams.
The next morning came about quickly but Elizabeth managed to beat the family up except for Jane who had arrived as promised from Netherfield early, she was also carrying a small note from Darcy.
My Dearest loveliest Elizabeth,I have to write you this morning to make myself believe that it is all true and not a dream, I was up half the night thinking of you and all your loveliness. I must confess to you this morning of my anxiousness to make you happy I have never felt this way in my life with the exception of Andrew whom I know will let me look after him, but you my dearest Elizabeth who's strong will and wonderful impertinence I love so dearly may wish for me not to smoother you but rather admire from afar. Please let me tell you this now, I shall fail miserably at letting you do anything from afar for I will need to be close at all times, be warned I have identified a fault that I shall never wish to fix, I fear my dear that you are marrying a man that is not perfect, but that this man is marring perfection itself. I believe I am very much the one who is making the best of matches and you my dearest are making me so very happy.
I must sign off as Jane is anxious to leave me to my suffering of waiting several more hours till I can call you my wife, and I hope that Bingley will stop laughing at my poor self control.... eventually.
Love FD
Elizabeth laughed at the letter and warmed at the sentiment, he had touched her with his openness and truthfulness and had relieved her of her only anxiety of marrying above her, she knew that she was the happiest of women, and the world was a good place to be in.
Meanwhile back at Netherfield, Georgiana sort private council with her brother in the library, she could tell he was happy and nervous all at the same time.
"You must sit down Fitzwilliam or you will wear yourself out before you get to the church, and Elizabeth will think very ill of me for not being able to deliver my brother in a fit state."
"Are you teasing me Georgi?" Darcy said with a smile.
"Do you think I am?" she asked.
"Yes I do, and I should really ask you to stop, between Charles and Lord Myres I have not had a moments peace." He said while trying to sound exacerbated.
"Now Georgi, how can I help you?" he asked more kindly, concerned that Georgiana may be feeling left out.
Georgi grew shy again, for she had something to deliver but did not know how to go about it. "Fitzwilliam do you remember the letters Anne wrote to us?"
"Yes," Darcy said growing more anxious.
"Well" continued Georgi, "She wrote another two with instructions for me to deliver them on a certain day, and ... Today is one of those days."
Darcy was now visibly pale and Georgiana quickly needed to reassure her brother, which was a new experience for her. "I do not know what is written but I am certain there is nothing bad contained within the words"
"Georgi, do you have it with you then?" Darcy asked almost in a horse whisper.
Georgiana nodded and handed him the letter and then left the room so he could read it in private.
My dearest Fitz,If you are reading this then I only have one thing to say. Congratulations. Please know that I will be forever happy knowing that you have found joy and love again, you are the greatest gift in the world and I am pleased that you can share it again. Please do not give me another thought for the rest of the day, for this day is yours and your beautiful new wife, have a wonderful life and enjoy it to the fullest.
Anne
Think of me once and a while with happy memories
Darcy wiped away a tear, even from her grave she had beautiful thoughts and sentiment, he carefully folded the letter away and put it next to the other one for safe keeping. To know that Anne had blessed his marriage was very important to him, and again he wondered if Anne knew whom he would marry, for he himself had doubted that he would marry again but Anne in writing this letter must have thought it possible.
Darcy's valet discretely announced his presence and told him it was time to get ready for they were to leave in half an hour. This brought Darcy's attention back to Elizabeth and he eagerly agreed and let the valet primp and preen him to distraction.
Darcy had made it this far with an air of dignity and Charles was standing to his side near the altar trying to give him advice.
"I was sure Jane was going to run out of the church saying that she had make a huge mistake...
"This is not helping Bingley" Darcy said.
"Well if you let me finish it would help" Charles continued, but seeing Darcy's look made him aware that his help was not wanted. "and we all lived happily ever after." He said quickly and then retreated.
Darcy smiled despite himself and turned to see guests arriving, he watched Georgiana and Lord Myres looking after Andrew. Already Andrew was looking impatient and Darcy began to wonder whether he should have listened to the Nanny who advised against taking him to the church, but Georgi had said that she with the help of Lord Myres could look after her nephew and he had happily agreed.
Andrew by this stage was able to stand using the church pew with Georgi's help, and Darcy couldn't help thinking it would not be to long before his little fellow would be walking, his thoughts were interrupted by the music starting and glimpsing Elizabeth in all her loveliness. She was breathtaking and his smile widened as she walked slowly towards him. Mr. Bennet kissed his daughter and left her standing next to Kitty who was the only bridesmaid and Lydia was still not allowed out in society.
They both tried to concentrate on the vows that they were agreeing to and repeating, but when Darcy took her hand to place the ring on it, all her feeling flooded over her again and she knew that he was the most important thing in her life, and when he bent down to kiss her it was all she could do to steady herself and stop herself from fainting through shear delight. Their kiss lingered a little longer than it should but the happy couple did not seem to notice.
Every one clapped and cheered when they finally broke away and turned around ready to walk down the aisle as man and wife when an appearance of a small boy's sticky fingers grasping on to Darcy's finest trousers took their attention. Georgiana had not noticed at first that Andrew had decided that he preferred his Fathers attention currently and choose that day to take is first few steps to get to his destination, upon gaining everyone's attention he also felt the need to try again his new talent, so hand and hand and little hand the Man the wife and the child walked very slowly down the aisle to everyone's delight.
It was now 18 months later and Elizabeth sat lazily on her chair looking out the window at her favourite view, she was hoping to catch a glimpse of Darcy as he rode off with his steward to check out some property matters. She absent-mindedly rubbed her swollen belly to comfort their unborn child within. Life was good and they were both extremely happy, little Andrew was now almost three as was as eager to learn about life as any child that age, but today he was happily content with sleeping next to his new mother. Elizabeth not wanting to disturb the piece and quite let her mind drift back to her first few months at Pemberley. There was a lot to learn but Darcy had been very patient with her, and she was now considered one of the best Mistresses anyone could wish to work for.
Her mind also drifted back to the only time she had every seen Darcy lose his temper, it was not long after they had arrived at Pemberley when he first took to retiring to his own chamber, Elizabeth's first thought was that she had done something wrong and finally found courage to ask him, she had be somewhat confused as he had been his same loving affectionate self during the day but at night disappeared into his private room, only after a quick kiss goodnight. Finally he answered her questions, and she remembered his words perfectly.
"Elizabeth, it is simple. I have to stay in my own room as I simply love you too much to be able to control myself."
"What ever do you mean Fitzwilliam. We are married now?"
"You are quite correct my dearest, we are married now and I wish for it to stay like that for a very long time."
"I have not the pleasure of understanding you Fitzwilliam, I plan on being married for a very long time."
"Exactly, and I do not wish you to be in any danger that I might impose on you, I said in our vows that I will love and cherish you, provide for you and look after you. And this is the only way I can think of saving you."
"Saving me from what!" Elizabeth said growing weary of this cryptic conversation.
Darcy looked at her briefly and then cast his eye's down to gather his thoughts.
"Elizabeth, my love. We have an Heir and I will not put you through the torture of childbirth and the consequences of it."
Elizabeth paled at the implication that he never meant for them to be together as man and wife or have children that she so dearly wanted. "No please tell me you are joking about not having children, Fitzwilliam you have never mentioned this before, why all of a sudden."
"This is not sudden Elizabeth, I have thought long and hard about this and I am resolved never to be the cause of your de..." He could not bring him self to say the word death, the very thought sent severe shudders through his spine.
"This is not just your decision to make Fitzwilliam, it is our decision to make. Have you failed to notice that I am strong and healthy, that my own Mother had five children without any mishap and that my own dear sister who is generally thought of as more delicate than me successfully gave birth not 2 weeks ago."
"I will never put you in danger Elizabeth, I could not forgive myself if ..."
"Stop this self pitying melodrama Fitzwilliam. For me having your baby is one of the most important things in the world, and for you to tear away my hopes and dreams with a factitious medical problem is ridiculous."
Darcy was now growing angry never before in his adult life had someone spoke to him like this. His Aunt of cause did not count as she spoke that way to every one. So with growing anger taking control he yelled at Elizabeth for the first and only time. "Enough, I will no longer give time to this fruitless conversation, what I say is final." And with that he stalked out of the door and headed for the quiet sanctuary of his study to calm down.
It had taking several weeks and the efforts of several family members to get them talking again, but Georgiana with the help of Lord Myres, Charles and Jane finally got the two talking again, it was the littlest Bingley that brought them finally together by showing them the wonderful and unconditional love a child can bring. It had taken several more months and many promised to convince Darcy that if she got pregnant she would let the best doctors take care of her and she would listen to their advise.
Andrew had shifted in his sleep disturbing Elizabeth's quiet thoughts, her mind drifted back to yesterday when with the help of Georgiana she had broken her promise to Darcy for one short hour.
Darcy had insisted that now that she was pregnant and due in less than a month that she would be confined to home and not take exercise outside as it was getting extremely cold. The first few days were bearable but as a week had gone by and she had not been able to walk around was getting in short temper, so much so that Georgiana questioned her, worrying that something was wrong. Elizabeth felt it was hopeless, but did not want to break her promise to Darcy as she knew the great personal sacrifice he had made to grant her wish.
With out Elizabeth's knowledge Georgiana had come up with a plan of detaining Darcy so Elizabeth could go outside with out being caught. The plan was a simple one, first get the master key that Mrs. Reynolds then hide the Study key. Then the next time Darcy was in his study, one of the few rooms with only one door, Georgiana would go and lock him in. It was a daring plan for Georgi but all the time she was now spending with her fiancée had given her a new fun personality she knew that even a year ago she would have never dreamed of such a plan against her brother. So with a little trepidation she checked the gap in the door and saw her brother working hard over a letter, and quietly without him seeing, closed the door and quickly locked it shut. Of course Darcy did hear the door close but was not quick enough to stop it from being locked nor did he see who the perpetrator was.
Darcy yelled from behind the locked door for assistance but there was no answer for at least five minutes, then a timid maid spoke softly that she would get Mrs. Darcy and Mrs. Reynolds immediately, and after a few moments the sound of rushed footsteps could be heart coming down the corridor.
"Fitzwilliam, what has happen?" Elizabeth had asked.
"Can't you see, I have been locked in. Get the master key from Mrs. Reynolds and unlock this d**m door"
"But Sir," cried Mrs. Reynolds, "I do not have the key, Miss Darcy asked for it yesterday and I have not had them returned."
"Well get Georgiana now and unlock this door." He yelled out again, all the while trying to force the door open.
And with that Mrs. Reynolds went in the direction of the Music Room looking for Georgiana.
"Elizabeth," came a very quiet whisper "Shhhhh, I'm over hear." Georgi said as she crept out from behind another door. She quickly explained what she had done and told Elizabeth that if she wanted she could go for a walk in the Rose Garden on the other side of the house and that she wouldn't tell a soul where she had gone.
Elizabeth was stunned that Georgiana could do such a thing, but Georgi smiled and told her that it would do her good to get outside, her brother was safe and could get into any harm and that she made sure Mrs. Reynolds could not get into any trouble, before she had a chance to finish they could both hear Darcy pounding on the door again.
"Quick go before Mrs. Reynolds comes back, and between her and myself I'm sure it will take me about an hour to find the missing key." She said with a grin.
Elizabeth only took one small moment to agree and her small amount of guilt at leaving Fitzwilliam locked behind a door was quickly overcome by the temptation of a nice walk in the garden.
She laughed out loud as she thought of him locked in his study and the look on his face when Georgiana finally let him out, he had grown suspicious in the short time he was locked in and suspected that he was the victim of a plot but couldn't pick who was the instigator. However he could never been angry at Georgiana for long and she had admitted all over dinner. Elizabeth looked good after her walk and before Darcy knew the full extent of the plan had commented on how lovely she was looking as the glow was back in her checks and that her good mood had returned, it was his turn to be embarrassed as Georgiana gave a look of triumph as she explained how well the plan had worked and that she had hoped he would let Elizabeth go for walks more often. Darcy had to concede but only after securing a promise that Georgiana would stop all espionage and that he would accompany Elizabeth on all said walks. With everyone in agreement they finished there dinner and enjoyed a night of music.

"William, will you please come to bed, you are beginning to make me nervous!" Elizabeth exclaimed, she was finding her husband both amusing and tiresome. Even after all these years sometimes he surprised her by his actions. "Tell me dearest, were you this nervous before our own wedding?" she said as she lifted her eyebrow to show her humour in his actions.
"I do not recall" Darcy said with a grin as he came towards his wife of 23 years and planted a kiss on her lips to quieting her for a moment.
"William, I do not believe you, I remember that you mentioned both Jane and Charles teased you that day. But I see not reason for you to be nervous about Andrew wedding, we both could not have chosen a nicer young lady for him and you know it."
"Yes I agree with you my dear," Darcy said as he finally settled into bed and let Elizabeth snuggle into him. "But tomorrow he becomes a husband and with becoming a husband comes many responsibilities."
" I did not realise that a wife was such a burden." Elizabeth quickly shot back.
"Oh yes my dear they are very worrisome, why I still think that every day I will wake up to find that my perfect wife is a dream after all. You don't know how that can wreak havoc on a man's mind"
Elizabeth laughed at him, then became reflective, "I love you William." She said quietly "and you have helped make our life perfect, I can not take all the credit. We have one very handsome son and three beautiful daughters, they have made us all proud. Our family in general has been very fortunate, Jane and Charles are still so much in love they still make me blush sometimes. Georgiana and Adam, well who would have thought two such different people would make such a wonderful match, then there is your cousin Richard who has never for a moment stopped teasing us, I can't believe their seven children are so much like there father. It has been wonderful, has it not?"
"Yes my dear, it has been wonderful. And tomorrow I let my eldest off into the world to make the same mistakes that I once made."
"And what mistakes would they be then Fitzwilliam?"
"Oh no doubt he will try to dictate a few things to Miss Proctor... I mean the newest Mrs. Darcy. How odd that will seem having two Mrs. Darcy's I will not know if they are talking about you or Andrew's wife, it shall no doubt be very confusing."
"Don't go off the subject my dear, you mentioned trying to be dictative, I only remember the once and I believe it took only about two weeks before you realised that I was indeed correct and you were indeed very wrong."
"If you are talking about my lovely girls you are right, I would not have wished our lives to be any different. It is lucky I suppose that we have Anne to thank for Andrew, for your Bennett family trait of having nothing but girls certainly came true?"
"And count your luck stars they all missed out on my wild ways is all I can say" laughed Elizabeth, "But dear we must stop speaking like our lives are over because one of our children is getting married, I can imaging that we have another thirty good years ahead of us, don't you agree."
"Yes I do, but only if you let me get some sleep or else I will fall asleep during the service tomorrow and my son will have to challenge me to a fencing dual, and I have little doubt that he could beat me now."
"Very well, I shall let the old man sleep" Elizabeth said as she turned over to blow out the candle.
"Old man sleep" She heard as the room went dark
"I shall show you how an old man sleeps." And with that William passionately kissed his wife and caressed the back of her neck gently in the way he knew she liked.
It was hard getting up that morning as they had had little sleep that night, Elizabeth was glowing as she stirred with a smile, Darcy had also woken with a smile and was gazing at his lovely wife. "Are you happy my dear" he whispered in her ear.
"I couldn't imagine being more so" she said as her eyes fluttered open.
"Then I will suggest we get dressed for we have a very busy day."
"If you insist" Elizabeth said as she let Darcy pull her up gently and swung her legs around to rest on the floor.
"Oh I do insist." He said with a slightly evil grin, before kissing her again.
Once down to breakfast, their youngest daughter Frances asked impatiently what had taken them so long in coming down as they were normally the first up to breakfast.
"My dear Frances." Darcy said, "You will have to forgive your tardy parents, it seems old age is catching up with us."
Frances took the excuse at face value but only did Lord and Lady Myres suspect that there was a hidden meaning behind Darcy's words. After breakfast the group retired again to prepare themselves for the wedding at eleven o'clock. Darcy took only minutes to make sure his attire was correct and prepared to depart to his study and had Mrs. Price, the new housekeeper summon Andrew there as well.
"Good Luck" Elizabeth said as she turned to her husband and gave him a kiss as he went to walk out of the door, "Not that you need it, but it is an excuse to give you another kiss."
"Thank you my dear but I do think I need a little luck, now I know how Georgiana felt all those years ago when she gave me my letter," with another quick kiss he left Elizabeth to prepare.
When Darcy got down to the study Andrew was already there, "You called me Father" he said in his deep voice.
"Yes I did" replied Darcy a little to grimly.
"Father are you going to give me another speech about my duties as a husband?" asked a worried Andrew.
"No not at all, you are one of the most responsible young man I have every had the pleasure of meeting, not that I am bias. But I jest... sit down I want to give you something."
"But Father you have already giving me so much. The Rosing Estates and all its surrounding farmlands is more than anyone could ask for."
"Andrew, the Rosing Estates is yours by birth right, it is what your mother wished and your grandmother."
"I thought Grandmother Bennet only ever wanted a wife for me."
"Hmmm very funny, I mean Lady Catherine. But seriously Andrew I have in my possession a letter for you, don't worry I have not read it, but I must admit I have be sourly tempted. This letter is from your birth mother Anne, and it came with instructions to give this to you on your wedding day. I will let you read it in private but if you would like to shear it with us then we will be waiting in the library." Darcy turned to leave but stopped at the door, "Do as you wish my son, either way Elizabeth and I are so very happy for you on this wonderful day."
With that Darcy left the room, leaving Andrew in a stunned silence as he looked at the letter, it was obviously old but in perfect condition, The lettering was a little shaky but still readable, unlike his Uncle Charles lettering.
With quivering hands he broke the brittle wax seal and began to read the precious letters.
My dearest childHow I long to be by your side today, the most important day of your life, but know that I will be watching from above and wishing you all the best, I hope you have picked your partner for life from your heart and not solely your head, if you are like your Father I think you will have selected wisely.
You have probably been giving lots of advice, and if my dear, dear mother is still alive you would have been given an over abundance. So I will keep my advice short and my well wished long. Be good to yourself and your loved ones and they will be good to you, Love and cherish them each day and you will bring happiness to those you love the most.
Know that I love you, and you are forever in my heart
Yours truly, Anne. (Your Mother)
Andrew read the letter several times, and brushed the tears away, this was the most important thing his Father had ever giving to him, and he knew it would be a lifetime treasure. After what seemed to be a very long time he was still unsure whether to show his Father and Mother, for it was Elizabeth whom he called Mother.
Over the years Elizabeth and Darcy had told him stories of his birth mother and she sounded wonderful, and his Grandmother De Bough when he was young would also tell him stories of Anne and what she got up to as a child, of cause she was the perfect child that would have been proficient in all she tried, but her health had not allowed her to try all the things that Elizabeth had accomplished. He had often thought that there was a little resentment from his Grandmother towards Elizabeth but it was never admitted to and he never asked. Elizabeth had told him that she only did things to a certain standard and that standard being "Very ill indeed." But both Darcy and himself would argue with her on that point. It was fun family times like that, that made him happy, he never had a real emotional moment, there of cause was the occasional death in the family but they had been Grandparents who were old and death was somehow a blessing. But showing them his letter from Anne was a hard decision to make, he didn't want to upset his Mother on his wedding day, but then again she knew the letter existed and he wanted to relieve her anxiety. He decided to show them and made his way to the library where they were waiting, as he entered he could see the look of love on their faces and he knew that he had made the right decision, no matter what, he was loved and he loved them back and only hoped he could be the wonderful father and husband that his father was, he had his role model and he was grateful.
As it was Andrew had no worries in fulfilling his duties as Husband and Father, he lived long like both his parents and was able to enjoy being surrounded by his Children, Grandchildren and Grand nieces and nephews. His life was prosperous and the industrial revolution had treated him well, he thought of his parents almost daily even though he was in his nineties and how they would have enjoyed the Nineteenth Century and all the wonderful new inventions that made life so much easier. But he also knew that they were happy dancing away their days in Heaven and content in sending blessings to his family on regular occasions.
