So he doesn't know her well enough, after all (or underestimates Fournier). Poor Madelaine's situation is unfortunately, rather realistically grim and torturing. On the other hand, I loved that although they did not expect Elaine to be proactive and determined enough to escape on her own, she still managed to thwart her abductor by her wits with the letter.
