Thanks; to me, "selfishness" versus "selflessness" is one of Austen's primary reoccurring themes. Someone on AO3 commented that we're almost more used to people behaving selfishly in a modern setting and so while the Thorpes have not changed really, our perception of them as obvious outliers may have changed given different societal standards. Not sure if I agree 100% but it was food for thought in how the translation comes across to readers.
