I understand your point of view about everyone having choices and the results are always based on the choice one makes. While I agree with the principle, we should also consider the associated cost for each choice for the person. Fanny was strong to reject Crawford because acceptance would not only have made her miserable but Edmund as well because he would most likely end up marrying Mary. Maria and Julia would also carry animosity towards her. Who was she going to make happy by accepting Crawford?
On the other hand, it may be valid concern with Maria that there were no other possible suitors for her other than Rushworth after Crawford made his preference known for Fanny and a choice to be dependent on her brothers may not have been practical considering Tom’s lifestyle and lack of Edmund’s affection for her compared to Fanny. She certainly did not expect Fanny to marry Edmund. Running away with Crawford was an extreme step, to be sure. Though, maybe she considered it to bring Crawford’s true character to light and in the process get some satisfaction for herself in getting away from Rushworth?
We can all argue that there may have been other ways to achieve both and that can maybe another fan-fiction?
