Happy Birthday!

People do have choices. The example of stealing to avoid starvation is hardly on the same level as choosing to marry or not to marry someone. MP is a novel about people making choices; Lady Bertram chooses to leave the upbringing of her daughters to the mean and spiteful Aunt Norris. Aunt N chooses to be mean to her niece Fanny, and to indulge Maria and Julia. Sir B chooses to allow Aunt N's influence to guide the characters of his daughters. Edmond chooses to be blind to Mary's faults of character. Henry Crawford chooses to flirt and pursue Maria who is already engaged to Rushworth, while also flirting with Julia. I could go on... What Jane Austen shows is that choices have consequences. Both moral and immoral choices have consequences. Fanny Price's strength of character is evident in the way she does not give in to her uncle when she refuses Henry's offer of marriage. That was her choice against all the persuasions of the people around her. Jane Austen herself chose not to get married when she had the opportunity, probably because she could see herself being burdened by many children (like some of her family and acquaintances, see her letters) and unable to pursue her writing. She chose to be relatively poor and dependent on her brothers in order to follow her vocation.
