I never considered before reading this how perfect Mrs Churchill and Mrs Elton are as companions for each other. One loves to fawn, the other loves to be fawned on. They're both nosy and interfering. They can go off and be unpleasant in a corner together, and nobody will miss them. I don't think Mrs Churchill would ever accept Mrs Elton as an equal, but if Mrs Elton was willing to take the subservient position (as she does here, but she has trouble with that in general - see her behaviour to Emma and Mr Knightley in the novel), Mrs Churchill would find her a useful proxy.

Looking forward to Mrs C's dinner!
