Well if it helps, I'm British born and bred and have lived in England all my life, and the Wikipedia page I linked in my previous post describes and depicts what we call muffins. They are indeed treated in the same way as crumpets - toasted, buttered, etc. I'm pretty sure that's what Wilde was talking about in
this scene of The Importance of Being Earnest. Looks like your first link shows those too. I think they'd be a bit dry without butter, and I've personally never seen them with blueberries in.
I was just calling it an English muffin to differentiate it from your American cupcake-y things! I reckon Marci was thinking of your American ones, but it's just really weird thinking of Regency ladies eating those for breakfast. That said, it's her story, and she can have her characters eat whatever she likes.
