Many of us had the same issue already with the first post. However, at least to me, it became evident that this is the premise of the story. No matter how accurate or not, it
is entertaining, and thus, I believe that the best way to read the story is ignore this little detail and enjoy it for the fun it was meant to be.
If it helps, we can build our own scenario: Georgiana and her companion joined. G was eager to go to the Lakes. Darcy hesitated once Bingley and the Hursts left, and was indignant that Caroline convinced the latter that she may safely stay behind under the chaperonage of the companion - but he could hardly kick a guest out. However, his own motives and his sister's pleas and one footman and one valet and two maids and one companion were enough to convince him he would be safe. Alas, once at destination, Georgiana became indisposed due to the regular reasons and she could only stay in bed for 3-4 days to recuperate (which is why she does not participate in all these outings). Naturally, her companion stays with her, and thus we end up with the exact same setting and propriety maintained.
