I like this twist on the memory loss theme, and how it echoes Anne and Captain Harville's debate on whether men or women forget the one they love first. It's only too in character for Frederick, who after all admitted being unjust, weak, and resentful toward Anne, to impulsively choose to forget her. How sad for Croft to lose his wife that way!

I wonder how the chalice would sweeten sorrow?
