An interesting comparison. Does anyone know whether marine officers were automatically gentlemen in this period, like naval officers, or did they have lower social status? They certainly had less opportunity to gain wealth from prize money. Ship captains got an undivided 1/4 share of the prize award, while the senior marine officer would split a 1/8 share with a bunch of navy lieutenants or warrant officers.
