I recall from discussions years ago at RoP that 700 pounds a year was considered the minimum for anyone to consider themselves a gentleman.

Mr Bennet's 2,000 pounds per year had the Bingley sisters sniffing behind his back in disdain. Darcy himself made his position clear in his proposal to Lizzy.

Lizzy's comment that the Colonel would need 30,000 pounds from his wife, implies to me therefore that at the very least he needs ten thousand of his own, just to bring his annual income up to Mr Bennet's level. Then some more to take it into territory enabling him to rub shoulders with society at the Darcy/Bingley level.
