Re: Colonel Fitzwilliam's fortune

I agree with the estimates for Rosings and Pemberley, though I would suggest that a lot of Darcy's wealth is tied up in land, and the 10k is his disposable income.
Colonel Fitzwilliam did lament that he could not afford to marry, and as the second son, what he gets is what his father is allowed to will to him; which as most estates of that size would be entailed, might be relatively little. I presume he is a cavalry colonel, which means he has to spend out on I think it was a minimum of four horses and their care and stabling. Keeping a horse as a civilian was around £100 a year, but keeping cavalry horses in fighting fit style, not to mention the probability of needing hunters as well in order to to be a part of the social scene of the other officers would start to add up to a tidy sum. Of course, not being able to afford a wife is pretty relative, when one considers that a clerk or junior solicitor would be keeping his family on £80 a year [the Bob Cratchitts of the world].
I would suggest if you want him to be wealthier, you might make him the recipient of a legacy from a maternal uncle, perhaps one who was packed off to India for unspecified misdeeds. I believe at the time of P&P the returns on a lump sum placed in the Funds was 4% P.A.
