Re: Small puzzles...

Thanks for commenting on my queries Michelle Anne. Ref your comments:

I'm not sure "yell" aptly describes Mr's Phillips calling down an invitation to Wickham even loudly as vulgarity. In Emma, Miss Bates, the mildest of creatures, called down to Emma Woodhouse from her window. I'm sure that wasn't vulgar in any way. I often call out to friends I see out whilst walking. Beyond that, I settle for saying there is no written evidence of her being vulgar in any particular way, hence my surprise a the last chapter description. I am not of course saying it couldn't happen. We can of course, as in many Jane Austen situations, put whatever spin we like on unknown quantities.

Re Darcy, He may well have been critical in private as we all sometimes are, but the text says that his criticism of Eliza's appearance happened "when they next met" which would have to be at a social function at either the Phillips household or Lucas Lodge. I just found that rather odd as his criticism wasn't aimed at the company, but at Eliza in particular. Just a discussion point is all and thanks for your reply. (-:
