Hi Agnes and thanks for the reply. I accept what you're saying, but Darcy didn't make remarks amongst male friends in the quoted instance, but the very next time he saw Lizzie amongst his company. Why would a gentleman do that, especially since he several times refused to join in Caroline's condemning Lizzie? I'm aware that it comes out later that he said he would sooner call her mother a wit rather than admitting to find her attractive, bu that had to be said just the after Merryton Assembley as he changed his views quite quickly after it. Again, this isn't the behaviour of a gentleman. There are no real instances of him being a deliberately rude man outside of the Merryton Assembley period, where his rudeness tag was somewhat the work of the locals to a fair degree. At Netherfield during Jane's convalessing he made a point of trying to take another path so that Lizzie could walk in line with them, and only avoided Lizzie from his growing fear her attraction was becoming a worry to him. .

As I said, it isn't of great importance because Jane Austen tends to let the readers use their imagination quite a lot, but again, saying something to Sir William man to man is a little different than saying anything about a lady and the book doesn't have him being as arrogant about it as the T.V series (Colin Firth) does. . Presumably, since they were in the same company they were classed as aquaintances by then, which makes it more unlikely.

It was just raised as a mild query. I have many others which is all part of the fascination Jane Austen weaves by what she doesn't tell us as much as what she does.
