Agnes Beatrix
I find it strange that you think Elizabeth only (or even primarily) married Darcy because he saved Lydia.
I don't. Not exactly my intention at all Agnes. Lizzie's prime objection to Darcy wasn't how badly she thought he had treated George Wickham, but the fact that he had disclosed his seperation of Bingley from Jane to Colonel Fitzwilliam previously as some sort of a triumph that he was unrepentant about, even proud of. The Wickham disclosure certainly shocked her, but her refusal of his proposal was mainly because of Jane. Their later accidental meeting at Pemberley (plus Mr's Reynolds testimony of his good character) and his desire for her to meet his sister helped change Lizzie's mind in his favour, but again his explanation about Jane and his possible error was prelevant in her acceptance of his change (or rather her own change of view). It wasn't so much Darcy's action over Lydia because he did it without her needing to know of it. It did, however, remove a situation that could have caused lasting shame and embarrassment to the Bennets and that would be far more important than any financial crisis. Because of that Lizzie was able to see a different Darcy than the one she thought she knew.
