Just to avoid confusion, I think I should have stated clearly that I meant romantically rather than any other way, Rae Elaine. Lizzie only came to realise Darcy's worth after his actions with the Lydia scenario, and what he did was (as he himself stated) done solely for her benefit. Darcy at least struggled with his feelings about Lizzie and confessed himself madly in love with all the passion of ordering a new umbrella and doing the world a huge favour , but Lizzie actually almost hated the mortal sight of him despite eight months of aquaintance until his letter which, in fairness was more about telling the truth about Wickham than much else. Certainly no love letter. It did make her realise her prejudices had been extreme and misplaced, but did she actually entertain romantic feelings before Lydiagate? I never got the feeling of her suppressing and burning desire.I have never really seen P&P as a love story, more a brilliant chronicle of life in the Regency era, and that is the main reason for my question. Interesting characters both, no doubt, but hardly Abelard and Heloise.
Footnote, as quoted by someone somewhere:...."Romeo and Juliet isn't a love story but a three day affair between a seventeen year old and a thirteen year old in which six people died! " It's the truth. (-:
