Jim D. Re A Study Not in Scarlet Chap.4.

Hi Jim D. Replying here for the usual reasons.

No arguments at all re your comments, and anything not covered specifically by canon is always assumption on our part and open to opinion . Just that two main points are always present in Persuasion.:

1. The fact that Anne hadn't had a season, and all other opportunities etc, are covered by the fact that her father was a selfish idiot and did not do best by her in any respect at all. Also, physical looks are a matter of choice of course. One man's Elizabeth Elliot is another man's Mrs Gray.(-:

2. The fact that there is much we don't know about many things and have to imagine as we will, always the case, even for Sherlock Holmes. (-:

The war, and the fact that male absence would be very relevant cannot be denied. Holmes, of course, is as restricted as we are and cannot but rely on logic for his opinions. Watson usually has a conflicting case to put, but that's only to be expected.
