so even less well off... I'd forgotten that line, there were tied cottages, though more often in Cathedral cities, for retired and respected members of the church and their dependents, a lot depended on who was considered deserving. country rectors didn't rank highly.
So the £40 pa might well be pushing it too far... Patty was probably on tweeny wages, she wasn't very old, one has a vision of Miss and Mrs. Bates training a series of little girls from orphan asylums, who would leave for higher paid jobs as soon as they were trained, rather like Miss Marple's 'little maids'...
