Answering Redson and Amytat.....

May 02, 2015 03:31PM
Good spot Redson in the quote you posted. That's quite a shrewd observation. The thing is, we are here on sites devoted to Jane Austen. Outside of them the interest levels are not quite so enthusiastic. I belong to a couple of other present day sites discussing books. Jane Austen is not over highly regarded there at all. One recent comment remarked that after Pride and Prejudice there is a marked similarity in her other works. To re-make a previous point, Jane Austen's characters and her period are much to do with he continuing popularity over time. Whether she would make her mark in the same way today, I have my doubts. As an example, J.K.Rowling has written the same number of books in her main genre ( one more actually) as Jane Austen did.Her sales figures (taken from source) are:

J.K. Rowling Net Worth of $1 billion came from the royalties she is receiving from her books and from the Harry Potter franchise. Harry Potter brand is said to be worth $15 billion. The film Harry Potter was the highest-grossing film series of all-time that recorded world box office sales of $7.7 billion.16 Dec 2014.

Thus, she has had more sales ( OVER 400 MILLION) in twenty years than Jane Austen has done in two-hundred. Jane Austen would have to become a totally different writer to even sell anything in volume today. Academic studies and topical issues regarding women and their status are based on the Jane Austen of her time, not today. Her continuiing sales and appeal are based on what she wrote of her period two hundred years ago in half-a dozen books. Today she could well just another writer if she went contemporary.
