Next generation. Re: If Jane Austen were alive today...

April 30, 2015 12:24PM
The world Jane Austen knew (and lived in) was about to suffer major changes after her death. It's well documented that the first railway arrived in England just thirteen years after her tragic early demise, a major breakthrough in road surfaces arrived and the Industrial Revolution was already well underway outside of the rural tranquility of the pampered upper middle classes. The Victorian era and its dark satanic mills was approaching. Jane wrote of what she knew, but she couldn't see the impending future just around the corner. Just dealing with her Pride and Prejudice characters alone, who would come forward as the next generation if she had lived for it?

How would the easy-living Darcy and Bingley children cope with the realities that the merchants and traders, so long derided as second class citizens had arrived as the new money. Uncle and Aunt Gardiner would suddenly be accepted by society as equals, the Bingleys' needn't hide their roots and industrialists, traders, manufacturers and mine and mill-owners would usher in two new levels of society, the rich employers and and the very poor employees, to replace the indolent rich who would suddenly realise that the maintenance bills were in proportion to the size of their estates and that land owning wasn't quite the status symbol it had previously been. Did Jane Austen give a clue to this with Kellynch and Northanger Abbey?

The Collins children (as yet un-arrived) would possibly see little change, as their living standards outside of visits to Rosings, were reasonably basic. The Gardiners children would emerge in society as ready and able to cope with it. Even Lydia Wickham nee Bennet was already used to a less than affluent lifetyle and her unwillingness to accept reality made her tough enough to cope with it. They would survive, but what of the pampered primaries? Would Darcy descend from his cloud and realise he was sitting on a goldmine (probably a coalmine) and capitalise on the industry he had for so long seen as far below him? Would Bingley, now removed to Derbyshire do likewise and be hardy enough to cope as his father had done? All idle meanderings, but it would be interesting to know. Unfortunately, except in our imaginations, we never will. (-:
