Every time I suffer a Chicago winter, I wonder why the hell I ever left California.

OTOH, I could never have afforded the home I have in San Francisco (they couldn't even build that kind of home; brick masonry is great for providing insulation against harsh winters, but it won't stand up to and earthquake). I met Katy in Chicago. I sold my first short story, and my first book from Chicago. I won my WWA Spur and got nominated for my CWA Dagger from Chicago. And in Chicago, I was able to jump-start the law enforcement career that had hit a concrete wall in the Bay Area. And I got to be part of the team that puts out Dick Tracy, arguably the fictional character who had the most influence on my adult life.

All in all, winters notwithstanding, it turned out to be a good choice.

Did you get into the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry during your undergrad years?

Like I say, I never miss the Bay Area more than during a Midwestern winter.
