Re: If Jane Austen were alive today...

April 28, 2015 02:06PM
On the general question, Jane Austen circa 2015 would know nothing of all the things that made her Jane Austen back in 1815. Of things she could maybe parallel, she might be a parson's daughter of similar age, possibly attending a university where instead of learning languages and spending her spare time writing letters home, doing embroidery and going for walks and saving her money for a bone-jarring coach ride home, she would race around in a modern car provided by possibly, to some degree, a struggling parent, become president of the anti-everything organisation, learn to drink large amounts of vodka whilst still staying upright and most likely have a live-in sex partner who she pretended was a study companion.

She would possibly/hopefully become intelligent enough to realise that the topic of sex wasn't in itself enough to make here a good writer and hark back to writing historical text about days when girls like her wrote by candle and firelight and read their stories to their families and the mere mention of sex was as tabboo as holding hands at an assembley. She would then develop an interest in the English Regency era and go on to form the Georgian Writers appreciation Society of the Outer Hebrides. (-:
