Not only is he a fine writer, he's a great guy. The first of his police procedural series featuring Wyoming State Game Warden Joe Picket, Open Season, was a runner-up for both the Edgar Award for Best First Mystery Novel, and the Spur for Best First Western Novel (and, IMHO, should have won both), and won the Anthony (from Bouchercon, the World Mystery Convention), the Macavity (from Mystery Readers Intl.), the Gumshoe (from Mystery Ink e-zine), and the Barry (from Deadly Pleasures magazine), all in the Best First Mystery Novel category.

If you like modern-day, rural cop novels, with a western flavor, like Tony Hillerman's Navajo Police series or Craig Johnson's Sheriff Walt Longmire series, you'll really enjoy Box.

Joe Pickett is a refreshing fictional law enforcer. No angst. No substance abuse. Loves his wife and kids. Does an honest day's work that he takes pride in. None of the over-blown neuroses that plague so many fictionla cops.
