Just doodling on your thought, but there is this exchange between Colonel Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth:

Quote

"Mr. Darcy is uncommonly kind to Mr. Bingley, and takes a prodigious deal of care of him."

"Care of him! -- Yes, I really believe Darcy does take care of him in those points where he most wants care.
It was an odd turn of phrase that Elizabeth used, but the colonel shrugged it off and told an anecdote that would serve to show Bingley's interest in the fair sex.

As for Darcy in the colonel's telling, he is only altruistically concerned with protecting his friend from a foolish choice of bride.

Why is one man so concerned about which woman another man pursues? Darcy and Bingley are not family. But, it is probably as the colonel indicates, only that Darcy takes care of his friend. Just that, innocent, nothing more.

Quote

When Darcy does declare himself to Elizabeth, she can scarce believe her ears: "In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."

Elizabeth's astonishment was beyond expression. She stared, coloured, doubted, and was silent.
Did she doubt because Darcy was the last man in the world from whom she would expect such a proposal? And, did she believe he could marry his dull cousin because he would not care anyway what woman he married, accomplished women and all that twat notwithstanding?

Could she have suspected on some level that Darcy was not interested in the way a man could be interested in a woman? Could this have been an unspoken question about him that her father, Mr. Bennet, shared--without, of course, either of them ever verbalizing the suspicion to each other? It was just there, under the surface.

The handsome Mr. Darcy, almost too handsome and striking, so impervious to women's charms ...

No wonder when he asks, Elizabeth doubts.

Ok, just a doodle on a line of reasoning that Austen probably did not intend.

Elizabeth was uncertain - why not Mr. Bennet as well?
