Okay, I have re-read my argument... (closing words?)

Redson
April 20, 2015 11:46AM
... which was best stated in answer to Jim D.'s question. I think it's a good argument, but I would, wouldn't I? because it is mine.

Thanks to everyone who indulged me with a reply. I now formally concede--though if anyone wishes to continue telling me why I am wrong, that's fine. But for the record, I agree it is probably as we have always thought: Mr. Bennet feared that his favorite daughter would find herself in an incompatible marriage with a man who got on her nerves, just as Mr. Bennet had found his pretty, young bride metamorphosed into a woman of great nerves and little sense. How awful to find you could not stand to be around the person who is your chosen partner in life, to be in gaol, and the only hope of parole is death. (I suspect Mr. Bennet heartily hoped his wife would go first, just as he assured it was a distinct possibility. I have to laugh at that even though it is a pretty horrible thing to say with your life. But that is Mr. Bennet--leaving you laughing even as your eyes widen in disgust.)

I am not excusing Mr. Bennet for being an awful husband and neglectful father, but despite with his faults, I think he did love his second daughter enough that he would not wish his marriage upon her. I wonder if he would have set up such a row if Darcy had wanted to marry one of the other girls? I doubt it.
