It was impossible because he was the villain.
That sounds simplistic, but I really think it comes down to that. She planned, when she wrote the book, to make him the villain, and for Fanny to wind up with Edmund, and when, in the actual execution of her plot, Henry came out more charming and Edmund more of a stick, she just charged forward, nonetheless, intent on following her original plan.
