Re: Mocking

April 16, 2015 01:03PM
In the same spirit:

I find her characters more realistic than you do. I can easily imagine meeting any of them in real life. JA is an astute observer of human behavior and to me this is what makes her books so enjoyable. The follies and nonsense of everyday people provide, IMO, more comedy than caricatures ever could. Lizzy and Darcy are heroic because they have realistic human flaws and learn to overcome them, a striking contrast to the sort of fairytale heroes and heroines who can do no wrong (and JA gives us clues early on that there is more to Darcy than his snobbery). I knew a woman very much like Jane Bennet (kind, always saw the best in people, always gave others the benefit of the doubt, firm when she felt herself to be right) and she was a wonderful person. IMO Jane and Bingley have a lot of impact on the story, if Bingley were less dependent on Darcy’s judgement Jane wouldn’t have been hurt, if Jane hadn’t been hurt Lizzy would not have been so angry at Darcy when he proposed, if she’d been less angry she might have turned him down more gently and he would not have been face with his own faults. I agree we don’t have much by way of physical descriptions of characters, but that’s of little interest to me, it’s the way she paints their personalities that I find interesting.

None of that is to say I’ve lost track of reality and forgotten that P&P is fiction or that I “fall down in adoration before a statue of St Jane”. I can’t agree that JA is the sort of social recluse that you paint her as but I find it neither here nor there when we are talking about her characters.

These are interesting differences between us but I’m not sure it sheds much light on weather Charlotte is mocking her husband or not. One could agree with everything you say and still not read her tone as mocking. In fact, if she is simply a counter balance to Mr. Collins it seems less likely she would mock him. Only if she has the same characteristics as a real person would she be capable of the occasional inconsistency. Mocking him would not be consistent with her usual practical approach to her own best interest.
