Re: A point for Mr Bennet.

April 07, 2015 08:50PM
I've never quite been able to understand this almost "hate" of Mr Bennet.

I'm not actually reading anywhere in the book that Mr Bennet is described as "lazy/and or indifferent as a father? . Indeed, as far as canon goes I'm not really reading Jane Austen describing him as a bad man/father at all. She never refers to him as indifferent, indolent ( a word she uses only for Mr Hurst) or mean. He is intelligent, hardly a cruel or aggressive man (I think the most aggression he shows anywhere is towards how many dances Bingley had at the Assembly) or a mean one (just the opposite in fact,it seems) That he sees his daughters as "silly and ignorant" like all girls of their ages, shows frustration that occurs in almost every man with a daughter at sometime or other at their behaviour. He also doesn't utter the words in public as the T.V adaptation shows him doing but says them only to his wife. He doesn't show Mary up at all by his own wishes but by Lizzie's plea when she leaves him little choice and his words aren't exactly harsh or over critical. If he hadn't spoken up, would he be avoiding his fatherly duties in allowing his daughter to be made sport of? A lose/lose situation for him then? This only takes place in Chapter 18 and those are the only words he speaks then. Add to these odd occasions his statement about Lizzie and Mr Collins and a few words with his wife on the entailment are all that is said of Mr Bennet in Volume One at all.

Is it cruelty to him I wonder to have a feather-brained wife who refuses to listen to reason and behaves like money is no object, and also supports the two younger daughters in their silliness. What exactly is he avoiding in letting Lydia go to Brighton supposedly as the guest of a respectable couple? Can anyone have the slightest idea that Lydia, despite her teenage foolishness of attitude, will so idiotic as to elope with Wickham? Yes, he knows she is totally foolish and will behave with that famous want of propriety, but to the extent of ostracising herself from family and friends by her actions and ending in an elopement? Did even Lizzie in her concern at Lydia's wildness foresee that sort of foolishness? Going on vacation herself at the same time hardly indicates so?. Does the book tell us differently?

Another misconception is that Mr Bennet left Mr Gardiner to sort out searching for Lydia. Wrong! The book tells us that he was disinclined to leave London and was only persuaded it was better he be with the family and leave Mr Gardiner, who lived in London, to pursue the matter by Mr Gardiner himself. He returned home in bad spirits. All else that happened after that was beyond his control. Mrs Bennet meanwhile took her meals in bed bringing out one of the few examples of his annoyance..

There's no point in keep repeating any defence of Mr Bennet. His character and personality are, it seems, served far more vociferously by John and Jane Reader than by Jane Austen. Wicked, wicked man that Mr Bennet. (-:
