Re: I could not agree more. ?

April 04, 2015 10:29PM
Hi Jim,
I concede the point about Mr. Philips drinking too much port being canon, and my sincere apologies for confusing canon with fanon in my example of the street scene from P&P1995. However, my other example stands: the scene where Jane and Lizzy, coming home from London, meet Kitty and Lydia in Meryton, contains a lot of inappropriate and ill-mannered behavior from the younger girls, and their account of the joke of having young Chamberlayne dress as a girl at a party of the Forsters is at least as wild as the fictitious sword stealing scene. I maintain that Lydia does run wild. Maybe we'll have to agree to disagree. Just as we obviously disagree in the main point of the discussion: whether Mr. Bennet is a morally reprehensible character or just a decent if flawed man who is a victim of his circumstances (I think this is your point)
What I meant about the theoretical Bennet son cutting up the estate: The paragraph quoted before in this thread states that Mr. and Mrs. Bennet hoped for a son who would join his father in breaking the entail and this was why they did not take the entail situation seriously enough to begin saving money (for the future of the Bennet girls and their mother should Mr. Bennet die). This translates that they wanted to break the entail, not for the sake of preventing the estate going to the Collins branch of the family since a son would already ensure that, but with the intention of selling parts of the estate to provide for Mrs. B and her daughters, like establishing dowries for them. This was that entails intended to prevent, keeping the estate intact and in one hand for the next generations. I meant this as an illustration that Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's way of thinking was irresponsible in yet another way. I admit though, with as many daughters as 5 there might not have been enough money to adequately provide for them but at the cost of the integrity of the estaem had the entail not forbidden it. Maybe the part about Mr. Bennet raising his son as someone willing to take care of 5 sisters is rhetorical, but it's also a minor point. Of course it is hopefully a lot better to depend on someone's own son/brother than on a distant relative but that wasn't what I talked about. Does this make some sense now?

Happy Easter!
