Re: I could not agree more. ?

April 01, 2015 02:31PM
Ah, Maria, but my whole point is the that Mr Bennet (like the rest) is a creation of Jane Austen and the reason I say she treated him harshly. Shall we have a sensible discussion and consider a few facts? Good, let us begin:
p.s The daughters of millionaires are excluded from the discussion. (-:

Firstly, Five daughters, why? Walter Elliot bust the budget with three (mind, he had expensive tastes in waistcoats and mirrors etc..), Tilney couldn't keep the family pile in order with no wife and just one and a couple of sons, and even the Dashwoods had only three, no father and their predicaments were not helped by "grab-it-all Fanny . Emma Woodhouse was the elite single child of a man with more money than sense and a millionaire neighbour who fancied her. ( I'm not mentioning poor Fanny Price). Mr Bennet got Mrs Bennet and five girls. Is that fair? ( Okay, I know the order of the books, but did J.A learn some lessons later? What a mess her own family might have been in with five daughters. Her father had to take in students as it was and had only a small rectory to maintain.) (-:

J.A. put Mr Bennet right behind the eight ball by making him solely responsible for the estate funds being frittered away and having a wife who it would have been "bang head on wall" time to even attempt a sensible conversation of management of funds with: "Oh, let's all go to Bath,( 125 miles away) trot off to Ramsgate (a touch over a hundred miles) for a spot of sea bathing, attend a ball or two, oh, and of course we'll all need new clothes to do it ( "I know all the best warehouses!") . Make sure all six of us get hearty breakfasts, lunches and dinners, by the way and we'll all need spending money of course!. That reminds me, which oif our neighbour's families are coming to dinner this week? Must have three courses! Oops, I forgot, those going anywhere will need hotel accommodation and then there's the transport! Lizzie will also need a few guineas for her trip to Hunsford (fifty seven miles ) "

What man ( at the risk of repeating myself) with six to feed and clothe (having children wasn't a state-funded pastime for men who didn't want to work, back in 1813) who spent little on himself, didn't socialise, drink, gamble or try to do a Walter Elliot and imitate George Brummel, could do much else but get broke in a hurry? His youngest (Lydia) was almost sixteen, so he had been providing all that for at least that period of time, and in a scaled-down fashion for twenty two years. In addition he kept a carriage and at least two horses, a driver, housekeeper/cook( "none of my girls boil their own potatoes!" (-smiling smiley housemaid, table servants and, presumably a gamekeeper to manage his grouse etc.

Unless Jane Austen made Mr Bennet a very wealthy man indeed (yes, I know what his estate yielded, but it wasn't sufficient, was it, or there wouldn't be a problem?. And here's the rub, where was it all going? ) he was just going to get broke pretty quickly. Add to that Mrs Bennet's silliness over money (and everything else) and it's a wonder the man wasn't in a lunatic asylum. In short, his income was being spent faster than it accrued, thanks mainly to Mrs Bennet and her five daughters, not Mr Bennet himself. Do we really believe that buying books for his library ruined the lives of six non-producing, free-spending ladies? "He" ( Darcy) had heard somehow that Mr Long does not keep a carriage and had to come to the ball in a Hack chaise) What nonsense! There's actually no record in the novel of his spending anything on himself at all. Wicked man, that Bennet chap!..On top of that, J.A entailed his estate to a stranger, ruined him with the flourish of a quill pen. Those are the facts.

Jane Austen herself could have helped solve the problem by just giving the Bennets two, possibly three daughters instead of five, instead she broke the man's back . He was never in with a chance.

Over to you. (-:
