You're right about people these days not visiting anyone without announcing themselves - and I must say that as a host, I prefer it that way. I do love having people visit me, but I can't stand it when people show up unannounced (I hate surprise parties, for instance) - it sounds so mean to say that, but I really like just a little preparation - even if it's nothing more than a friend phoning and saying 'I could be at yours in five, do you mind if I come over and pick up that book we talked about?' Once she's here, then, I'll usually ask her in for tea and a chat, and I really don't mind that, but I do need the five minutes advance warning just to get myself presentable ;-) Imagine you're a Regency lady in the country - you'll practically just sit in your parlour all morning and wait for someone to pop by, unless you do the popping yourself. I would so not like doing that.
Is it not strange that sheeps' guts should hale souls out of men's bodies?
