    St. James Hospital, Washington DC

"It's almost over! Just a little more. Push!" cried Dr. Sinclair.

    "I can't!!!" cried the young girl. "Too...tired."

"No, Rose, you have to," said Dr. Sinclair, soothingly. "Come on...it'll be all over soon."

Exhausted out of reason and numb with pain, Rose pushed and the most beautiful sound in the world reached her ears. A baby crying. Her baby crying.

"That's it!" said Dr. Sinclair joyfully. "It's a girl! A beautiful girl!"

"But the pain's not gone yet!" cried Rose. "Oh g-d! I can feel it. Oh...!!"

"There's another one!" said Dr. Sinclair. "Okay, now, just one more...push!"

Rose pushed, and for the second time in a matter of minutes heard the beautiful sound of life. "Congratulations Rose," said Dr. Sinclair, smilingly. "You just gave birth to twin girls!" And he showed them to her.

Rose cried from pleasure and pain. Pleasure at seeing her beautiful darlings, and pain...pain at the thought of what was to come.

"Now you rest, hon.," said Nurse Adams, kindly. "I'll take care of your little ones."

Rose nodded gratefully. After her long, painful labor lasting 38 hours, she felt like going to sleep and never waking up again. It had been an agonizing time for her especially since there had been no one to share it with. Of course, she'd hoped that he might come, but it was all over.

The next day; Hospital Social Service Center

Rose looked at her daughters one last time, tears falling freely from her eyes. She had known that it would be difficult to say goodbye, but no one had told her that the pain would be so torturous. She turned her head before her daughters' faces made her change her mind.

Mrs. Madison put a comforting arm around her, "I know, it's hard, dear. But rest assured, these girls will live a happy life. We'll take care of them."

"Thank you," said Rose, softly. "Will they be together?"

"That depends," said Mrs. Madison. "If any client wants twins, we'll give them twins, if not, then...I can't guarantee anything."

    Rose nodded, "Yes, I understand."

    "Have you named them?"

"No," said Rose. "I don't have that privilege...after all I'm practically abandoning them."

Mrs. Madison held her hand comfortingly, knowing what she was going through. She'd seen scenes like these a lot. "You'd better leave, dear before these kids get to you..."

Rose said, "Yes, you're right." She went and kissed them both on their cheeks and ran from the room, weeping.

    2 weeks later

Mrs. Madison had not been to work for 2 weeks. She'd come down with the flu. Her whole office was a mess. She spent the morning sorting out papers and transactions. Something caught her eye. She went to her secretary.

"Patti," she said. "Those twins are gone?"

"Yes," said Patti. "They were adopted right after you left."

"Oh..." she said. "That was quick."

"Yeah," said Patti. "But they were adorable. So, I don't wonder."

"Okay," said Mrs. Madison returning to work. Two different people had adopted those girls...single people, actually. Mrs. Madison found that strange. What kind of single young people wanted newborn infants. It was not in her place to say, but she hoped they would have time for the child. She looked at their names again.

    William Darcy. Elizabeth Bennett.

They didn't seem related. The twins would now lead very different lives, in separate homes and separate environment. Mrs. Madison sighed and went back to work.

    Chapter 1

Posted on Friday, 9 April 1999

William Darcy drove his red BMW away from the Social Service Center with a certain warm, fuzzy feeling. And the source of that wasn't hard to place. It was the little baby girl on the back seat, his little bundle of joy. She was asleep and very quiet for which William was thankful. He smiled to himself as he peeked back at the little girl he had now made a part of his life. She was so tiny, so beautiful, so wonderful. He just felt like watching her sleep.

Of course, William knew that this was a very drastic step in his life, but he was up to it. A child was a huge responsibility, especially for a single parent. But he knew he could do it. He had faith in himself and faith in god. This child would only get the very best, no compromises. He would give her all the love of the world and only hoped that she would do the same.

Half an hour later, William pulled into the driveway of his posh, McLean home. His sister Gina was waiting for him eagerly at the door.

"Gina!" he cried. "You're supposed to be at school!"

16 year old Gina giggled, "I know, Will, but I had to see her." She cooed and smiled at the little baby, talking baby talk.

William laughed, "Okay, Gina, can we come in?"

They went inside, closing the door behind them. "Oh Will!" cried Gina gleefully. "She's a sweetheart! What's her name?"

William's eyes misted, "Her name? Her name is going to be...Crystal Georgiana Darcy." He studied Gina's expression. "Like it?"

Gina jumped into her brother's arms, crying, "Oh Will! It's beautiful! I love it!" She burst into tears.

"Gina, what's wrong?" Will asked concernedly, gently stroking her hair.

"Nothing Will," sobbed Gina. "It's just that I...I miss her so much...and now this baby will always remind me of her."

"I know, Gina, I know," whispered William. "She's our own Crystal...and will remind us forever...of the one we lost."

Will and Gina just held onto each other celebrating happiness and sorrow, life and death. They just stood there for sometime till the wails of baby Crystal crying for attention brought them back to earth.

"Crystal..." William cooed, holding her gently. "Say 'hi' to your Aunt Gina."

As soon as Crystal came in William's arms, her crying stopped.

"Oh Will!" cried Gina. "She likes you! She really likes you! Can I hold her?"

"Sure," said William, handing the little infant to Gina. "Just be careful."

Gina smiled and kissed Crystal's little nose, "Oh I love you so much already! We're going to have a grand time, you and I! Oh yes we are!"

William watched his sister play with his newly adopted daughter and felt his heart melt. Even though he wasn't sentimental in the strictest sense of the word, William was by no means insensitive. He watched the two most important people in his life and vowed to himself that he'd take good care of them, and give them all the love that they needed and deserved. He thought of the dear one he'd so recently lost and let out a silent cry. Looking heavenward, he whispered to himself, This one's for you, Crystal.

    Meanwhile

Elizabeth Bennett had never been happier in her life. There comes a time in every woman's life, when she craves a little baby. Sooner or later, every woman's maternal instincts make her want the attention and unconditional love of a child, who is connected to her in the closest way possible. This basic instinct is what differentiates men and women. It is this joy of having a baby that makes the world go around. Unfortunately some women get one and some women don't...

So, when Elizabeth's doctor told her that she would never be able to have a baby, she felt all her hopes and dreams shatter around her. She had always wanted a baby, when the time came. But finding out that it would never be possible was probably the hardest thing she'd ever had to cope with. There had been periods of deep depression and she had eventually sought the help of a psychiatric counselor. And after several sessions, she figured out what she really wanted with her life and decided to take a drastic step. She would adopt a baby.

And that's why, as she drove through rush-hour traffic from downtown DC, she didn't feel any sorrow or any road rage. She didn't feel melancholy or anger. Just pure happiness. And the reason for that was sleeping on the back seat. This little child would fulfill all her dreams. Elizabeth knew that she loved her already and vowed to be the best mother possible and give her the love and guidance she deserved; something Liz had never gotten from her own mother. If anything, Liz vowed never to become like her own mother.

Liz headed for her parents' house. It would not be pleasant to deal with their surprise and her mom's comments, but she felt that her parents deserved to be the first to know, especially her dad. He had always been there for her and encouraged her to follow her dreams. If it weren't for him, she would have gone insane a long time ago, what with her high strung mother and wild sisters.

After an hour long drive, Liz entered the driveway of her parents' home. The baby was still asleep, so she picked her up and went to ring the doorbell. Her sister Jane answered the door.

"Lizzy!! I - " Jane began to say, but broke off. "Oh!!! Who is this!!"

Liz smiled sweetly at her sister, "Jane, I'd like you to meet my new daughter, Abigail Jane Bennett."

Jane was stunned, "Say that again...your daughter???"

"Yes!" Liz cried. "I adopted her this morning!"

Jane was too surprised to say much for a couple of seconds, then, "Oh my!! Congratulations, sweetie! This is wonderful! And she's so cute. Oh! I'm an aunt! This is great! Look at me, I'm rambling! Come on in, Lizzy."

    Liz and Jane went inside.

"This is rather sudden," said Jane, once inside.

"Actually," said Liz. "I've been thinking about it for a while now."

"You never told me!" said Jane, reprovingly, holding Abby's little hands.

"Well..." said Liz, sitting down on the couch. "You were too far away, and I didn't feel like discussing it on the phone. Btw, when did you get here?"

"This morning," said Jane, smiling. "I rather surprised mom and dad, showing up like that. But at least I didn't have a baby with me! They're gonna freak!"

As if on cue, Mrs. Bennett came into the room, saying, "Jane, I heard some voices. Is that Li---" She stopped, on seeing Lizzy. "Oh you are here! And who's that baby?"

Liz braced herself and got up to face her mother, "Mom...I'd like you to meet my daughter...my adopted daughter, Abby..."

Mrs. Bennett just stared at her, "Lizzy! What are talking about?! Stop this nonsense. Tell me really, whose child is this?"

"I think you didn't hear me, mom," said Liz, patiently. "I just told you...I adopted her this morning. She's mine now...and I intend to keep her."

"Lizzy!" her mother shouted. "Are you crazy?! You're a single woman with no experience. What do you think you're doing with a baby??? You don't have time for yourself, where'll you get time for her! This is insane. It's just a whim...you'll come to your senses when the kid keeps you awake all night!"

All this loud talking woke up poor Abby, who started crying. "See?" said Mrs. Bennett.

Liz picked her up and gently rocked her. Abby quieted down immediately. "No, mom, I don't see. I have thought this over and this is really what I want. I want a baby. I'll love her as my own."

"At the rate you're going," muttered Mrs. Bennett. "you'll never have your own."

Her words really stung Liz and she ran out of the room.

    "Mother!" cried Jane.

"Was it something I said?" Mrs. Bennett said. She had no idea of Liz's unfortunate condition preventing her from having a child.

Jane was astonished, "Why are you so hard on her? Fine, if you don't agree with her decision you can express your disapproval, but at least don't jeer on her face."

"I wasn't jeering," Mrs. Bennett defended herself. "Just telling her what would happen if she didn't give up her attitude and look for a husband soon. Then, she can have all the kids she wants, and I won't say a word."

"Mom!" Jane was astonished. "You really don't know!" And then, she told her.

Later that day; lunch at the Bennetts'

Abby had been fed and was sleeping for the moment. Liz, Jane, Mr. And Mrs. Bennett ate their meal quietly.

"Abby is very sweet," ventured Mr. Bennett. "I like her."

Liz smiled gratefully at her father, "Thanks dad."

"I'm sure she'll be all that you ever wanted," he continued.

"I sure hope so," said Liz. "But even if she doesn't turn out the way I planned, I'll love her with all my heart."

Tom Bennett smiled at his own daughter, "You know of course, that you can always count on us to help you. We'll be glad to baby-sit anytime, won't we, Fran?"

    "Yes," said Mrs. Bennett, sourly.

"Thanks mom and dad," said Liz, guiltily. "There's one more thing I wanted to tell you guys."

Liz stopped. She looked around at her parents and sister. "I got a new job."

"Oh, Lizzy! That's great!" cried Jane. "Where?"

"At Longbourn Bank International," said Liz, with a little smile. "It's the job of my dreams!"

"Congratulations, dear!" said Mr. Bennett, with a huge grin.

"But there's a little...um...disadvantage," said Liz. "I'm going to have to move to London."

    Chapter 2

Posted on Friday, 16 April 1999

    12 years later

    Washington-Dulles International Airport

The British Airways Boeing 747 arriving from London, made a smooth, perfect touchdown easing onto the runway. Minutes later, the passengers alighted, making their way to the customs. Customary to international airports around the world, there were delays. The passengers, exhausted after an 8-hour flight across the Atlantic, had to put up with another challenge: getting through customs in less than an hour. That done, the passengers proceeded to the luggage retrieval area. Two, striking brunettes claimed their baggage, as they made their way to the exit. One of them was whining.

"I can't believe they made us stand in that queue for 45 minutes! It's outrageous. And after that awful flight, too! Argh!"

Her companion smiled comfortingly at her, "Now, mom...I know how you feel about flights, and believe me...if there was any possible way to get over here without taking a flight, I would be the first to check it out. But for one, we'll just have to live with today's lame technology."

Elizabeth Bennett laughed, "Abby, honey. If I couldn't whine to you constantly, god knows how I'd ever survive any of those terrible flights!"

Abby Bennett smiled, "Thanks, mom! Just remember that the next time I tick you off." They laughed and continued towards the exit.

To any casual observer, the sight of Liz and Abby together wouldn't evoke any remark. They'd assume, like most others that they were mother-daughter. Hence, when told that Liz was, in fact, not Abby's biological mother, most reacted with undisguised surprise and disbelief. This wasn't strange, because as fate would have it, Abby resembled Liz in a frightening way. She had Liz's bouncy, dark brown hair, her dark, expressive eyes, and her ever-present smile. Considering these circumstances, not many people were even told that Abby was adopted. Liz seldom mentioned it, and only her closest friends knew. So, in all appearances, Abby was Liz's daughter.

As they neared the exit, Liz caught sight of a tall, slim, blonde female waving at her. "Jane!" she exclaimed before rushing to meet her sister. "Oh Jane! I'm so glad to see you!" The sisters hugged. Abby was close behind.

"And here's my favorite niece," Jane said, hugging Abby. "How's my little girl?"

"Not so little any more," Liz said, wryly.

"Oh, so we're at that stage now," Jane said knowingly. "Young adult, then."

"Yes, Aunt Jane," Abby smiled. "As you can see, I'm quite grown up now...nearly a teenager!"

"Fancy that!" Jane exclaimed, with a little laugh. "And before you know it, you'll be driving around and partying!" Liz snorted, as if saying that she'd never let that happen. But she didn't say anything.

"C'mon now," said Jane, taking some of their baggage. "Let's get outta here. There's so much I wanted to talk about."

Meanwhile, at the Darcys', McLean, VA

"But, dad! It's not fair!" whined young Crystal Darcy.

"Who said life was fair?" William used his favorite line. "Crystal, you're not going to that party and that's the end of that."

"But dad," continued Crystal in that same vein. "All my friends are going."

"Well, good for them," said William. "If their parents think it's advisable for 12 year olds to go to a college party, it's their decision, but I'm not letting my daughter anywhere near there."

"I'm almost 13!" Crystal cried, as if that made any difference. "And it's not a college party, okay!"

"Really?" William raised his eyebrows. "Then what would you call a party consisting of mainly 19 and 20 year olds?"

Crystal looked at him defiantly, "They're just Tracy's brothers friends, okay?"

"Discussion closed, Crystal," said William, with finality. "I want to hear no more about it." With that he returned to fixing up dinner.

Crystal stamped on the floor a little and whined, "Okay then...be that way! But I'm not talking to you!" And then, she stormed out of the kitchen, presumably to sulk in the privacy of her own room.

William shook his head. He wondered why it was so much harder raising Crystal than it had been Georgie. Georgie had always been so quiet, unassuming and submissive. Except for that brief period when she was 15, she had always stayed out of trouble. But Crystal was different. She was just one of those hyper, energetic kids who were always up to some mischief. Now that she was entering that rebellious phase of her life, William knew he'd have a hard time keeping her in control.

If only he had someone to share the responsibility...that was out of the question. for all the 12 years he'd had Crystal, he'd yet to meet any woman who'd accept her and love her for who she was. He'd dated a little here and there in the years, but had always been deeply disappointed. All his dates had been out for his money and showed shallow affection for his daughter. None of it was real. What he needed was someone caring and understanding who'd love him and his daughter. He'd long given up any hope for such a woman. After all, there was no point living in a fantasy world. He didn't need anyone. He had Crystal, and Georgie, and his work...that was enough to keep him occupied for a lifetime.

William sighed, as he stirred his pasta. Sometimes he wondered whether he'd done the right thing in adopting Crystal. Perhaps, she needed a mother...maybe she needed a more "conventional" home. Maybe not...But anyway, it was too late to think about that now. She was his daughter and he wasn't about to share her with anyone. Presently, she was mad at him about not letting her go to that party. He'd have to got to her room to make up later. After the pasta was done, maybe...

That night; at Jane's house, Vienna, VA

"Goodnight Aunt Jane, goodnight, mom," Abby kissed them both on their cheeks before retiring for the night. It was time for the sisters to have a heart-to-heart talk.

Jane watched Abby leave the room, "She looks so much like you...it's scary."

"Isn't it?" Liz said. "No one would believe she's not really my daughter, but then again, no one has to know."

"Yeah," Jane nodded. "It seems like yesterday...when you came to mom's and told them about your job and everything. And yet, it's been a while."

"Yes, it has," sighed Liz. "And so much has happened."

The sisters talked about a variety of subjects, from Jane's narration of their mom's antics, to her recent arrival at Virginia. From Lizzy's experiences in London and Paris to the education of Abby. Suffice it to say, they had a lot of catching up to do and the chief of that night was spent in that manner.

2 days later; Morning, 8:00 am

"Oh gee! I'm so late!" cried Liz, as she scuttled around trying to get dressed for her interview.

"Don't worry, mom. You'll be fine," said Abby, eating her cereal.

"Thanks, hon.," Liz smiled at her daughter.

Jane was also up and she was greatly amused by Liz's chaotic morning preparations. A little later, Liz was dressed and all ready to go. She was wearing a black skirt suit which looked both professional and smart. She had a single, pearl necklace and a minimum of make-up on.

"So, what do you think?" Liz asked Abby and Jane.

"You look great!" Abby said enthusiastically and Jane agreed. Seeing that Liz was a little nervous, Abby added, "You already got the job, mom...don't be nervous."

"Yeah, I know," Liz sighed. "But this is very important...I haven't met all the chiefs in Washington yet..." She gathered all her papers, etc and looked one last time in the mirrors. "Abby...you'll be okay?"

Abby gave her mom a look, "Mom! It's not like I've never been alone at home before!"

"Right," Liz smiled, gave both Abby and Jane a hasty kiss, and left the house.

    30 minutes later

Stuck in traffic, impatient and completely frustrated, Liz just knew it was not her day. First she woke up late, then her rented car needed gas, she took several wrong turns and finally an accident caused major delays. She was running very late, and that would definitely not make a desirable first impression on her future employees. Liz cursed under her breath. There was nothing she could do about it.

As Liz sat in her car, waiting for traffic to clear up, she thought about her decision to move back to the States. Of course, she'd always intended to come back. That's why, Abby had gone to the American schools in London and Paris. She just hoped her timing was right. She had been quite happy at Longbourn International Bank. But when she was offered this new job with twice her old salary, and a location in DC, she knew it was an offer hard to pass. So, she accepted it.

She had interviews and negotiations with the London contacts and some people from DC. But she hadn't met most of the people she'd work with. Hence, her nervousness and dismay at being late. Just as Liz was pondering over that, the traffic started to move. Liz looked at the time and saw she was just a couple of minutes late. This might yet be my lucky day, she thought wryly.

About 10 minutes later, Liz arrived at the office building at Tyson's Corner. She drove into the parking area looking for a space. She spotted one and just as she was about to move her car towards it, a red BMW cut her off and pulled into the space.

Dang! Liz cursed. That just made her day! Now, she'd have to find another space, and considering the number of cars in the lot, that in itself would be a challenge. She stole a look at the red car. She saw a tall, dark-haired man alight. Apparently, he was in a bit of a hurry, as he didn't even see her, and just walked towards the office. Jerk! Thought Liz. Didn't even have the decency to acknowledge me. Jeez!

Liz found another spot and she parked and went inside, as quickly as she could. When she entered the lobby area, she saw the elevators just beginning to close. "Stop that elevator!" she yelled, motioning the person inside to wait for her.

She barely made it in and her hair was undone. "Thanks," she said to the only other person.

It was a tall, dark-haired man. He just nodded at her, not even bestowing a smile. Liz found that he was staring at her loose, curly hair that was undone. Granted, it looked wild, but he didn't need to stare. Liz felt uncomfortable. This guy was positively poring through her, and he was stiff as god knows what! She felt as if he was disapproving of her. She stole a look at him and felt a flicker of recognition. She knew she'd seen him somewhere recently, but where...?

The elevator stopped and they both got off at 12th floor. Liz went in search of the ladies' room to do her hair. She saw the stranger walk off in the opposite direction. As she saw him from the rear, she recognized him. He was the guy in the red BMW, who'd stolen her parking space. Her assessment was right. He really was a jerk!

A little later, Liz arrived at the office door and entered. She gave the receptionist, Jessie, her name and Jessie asked her to wait. Within minutes, Jessie ushered her to a room.

"Ms. Bennett," a rather old man greeted her. "We've been waiting for you."

"Yes," said Liz. "I know...I'm sorry for being late."

"Oh, that's fine," he said. "By the way, I'm Larry Cougar." He introduced the others in the room to her, and asked her to be seated. Just then, there was the buzz on his phone.

"Excuse me," said Larry, as he answered the phone. ".....okay, send him in." He put the phone down and addressed Liz. "Someone else is late today, too."

Then, a tall dark-haired man entered the room. "Sorry I'm late," he muttered.

Larry waived away the apology. Standing up, he said, "Ms. Bennett, I'd like you to meet William Darcy. Will, Ms. Bennett."

Liz and William just stood there looking at each other. Liz thought, Oh my g-d! It's the guy from the car and the elevator! No! Argh!

Larry said, "Will, Ms. Bennett will be working very closely with you now. She's the new International Financial Advisor."

    Chapter 3

Posted on Tuesday, 15 June 1999

William nodded at Liz showing no emotions. "Hi."

Liz looked coldly at Will. "Hello."

Larry looked from Liz to Will and back. "Do you two know each other?"

"NO!" Liz exclaimed. "I don't know him."

Larry looked inquiringly at Liz. He was rather puzzled. If they didn't know each other, why the restrained tension. It seemed odd. If they were to work together closely, it would be to their advantage to have a good interpersonal relationship. But Larry was at a loss to understand the veiled animosity Liz betrayed for Will. After all, he was a likeable man.

Larry addressed Will, "Ms. Bennett is joining is joining us as the Senior International Financial Advisor starting today. You both will have to work together on all the foreign policies, markets, etc. I think it's best if you showed her around today." Then, to Liz, "Will can show you your room and take you around the office. I think you are aware of all your major responsibilities. But if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask Will. He's been with us for a long time."

    "Has he?" Liz said, dryly.

"Yes," said Larry. Then, getting up, "It's been very nice meeting you, Ms. Bennett. I hope you have a wonderful first day here! Don't worry too much. You'll settle in, in no time!"

"Thank you!" Liz flashed a huge smile. She was very excited. "I'll do my best!"

"I know you will," said Larry, smiling. Motioning to Will, "Okay Will...you take it from here."

William nodded and glanced at Liz. He indicated her to follow him. Liz looked at him briefly, smiled at the all the occupants of the room and then followed Will out. Once out, she saw him waiting for her at the door. He said, "You're the lady from the elevator, Ms. Bennett."

Liz smiled icily, "How observant of you, Mr. Darcy."

William did not return her smile. He simply said, "Well, where would you like to start?"

Liz shrugged, "Wherever you want. It's up to you."

"Okay, then. This way, Ms. Bennett." Will began to walk, but Liz interrupted him with, "Call me Elizabeth or Liz, please, Mr. Darcy. I can't stand being called Ms. Bennett. It suffocates me."

"Then you must call me William or Will," replied Will, smilingly.

"That's only fair," Liz said shortly. "Okay, let's go."

William nodded briefly and led the way. As he walked with Liz by his side, he said, "I'll show you around the office first. You can get acquainted with some of the staff and then I'll take you to your room. Is that okay?"

    "Fine," Liz nodded.

"Okay," Will said, entering a hall. "To my right is the main secretarial hall. All the secretaries share it. Then, here, to my left is the supplies room. You'll find almost all kinds of office supplies here. This is the printer, copier room. And this..." William took Liz around showing all the major areas of the office. Then they came to the executive rooms.

Will said, "Okay...I'll just introduce you to some of the staff." He entered the first room. A young, brown-haired man in his late 20s was sitting behind a huge, mahogany desk. His face was pleasant and smiling and his aspect was pleasing. He looked up as soon as they entered and smiled. "Hey Will!" He looked at Liz, "And who's the pretty lady?"

Liz blushed and smiled, as Will introduced them in a wooden voice. "Rich, this is Elizabeth Bennett, our new Financial Advisor. And Elizabeth, this is Richard FitzWilliam, our Marketing Director."

"Pleased to meet you," said Liz, smiling widely. She liked Rich already.

"The pleasure is all mine," said Rich, getting up to shake her hands. Then, glancing at Will, "So, I guess you'll be working with Will! Tough luck, eh?"

Liz laughed, knowing that Rich was joking, but felt that it was very much true. Rich continued, "Well, some guys have all the luck!!" He winked at Will.

Will said uncomfortably, "Okay, Rich...enough. Shall we go, Elizabeth?"

"Sure," she said stiffly. Then, to Rich, "Bye!"

"Bye, Liz! Have a good time!" said Rich, enthusiastically. "I'll see you at lunch!"

Will and Liz exited the room in silence. Liz was thinking how different Rich was from Will. He was so much more open, interesting, funny...fun!! And Will...he was haughty, boring and a big jerk!! Meanwhile, William was thinking of how much he envied his cousin, Rich, who had the gift of making friends with strangers, especially women. He could see how easily he'd won over Liz in a minute while he'd been unable to make any decent conversation with her in the past 25 minutes.

Attempting to start some sort of a conversation, Liz said, "Rich is a very interesting person! Do you know him well?"

Will nodded, "Yes, he's my cousin, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on the way you see it!"

What? Is that a joke? From Mr. Ice Man himself?! Liz said aloud, "Oh, I see."

They relapsed into silence again. William couldn't think of anything better to say, but was saved from the necessity by coming to another door. He knocked and entered. A lavishly decorated office awaited them. It had expensive looking paintings on the wall and leather furniture. There were several pieces of modern art and some bright orange colored carpets. Too bright, in Liz's opinion. The woman behind the desk was no less than 30 years old, but her entire aspect tried to pass her for a 20 year old. She wore too much make-up, flashy clothes, and designer jewelry. Even before she opened her mouth, Liz formed a rather undesirable opinion of her.

And, then, she opened her mouth.

"William, darling!! How nice of you to visit me!!!"

William darling??? Who is this?? Liz thought.

William glanced at Liz. Then said, "Um...Caroline. I'm here to introduce my new partner, our new International Financial Advisor. Caroline Bingley, Consumer Director."

For the first time, Caroline looked at Liz. She observed her from head to toe, then said in a dismissive tone, "Oh, how charming!" She smiled insincerely. Then turned her attention back to William, "I haven't seen you in ages, William! You must come over more often. For lunch, maybe? How's Crystal doing?!!"

Liz could see that William was irritated as he said, "I really don't have the time right now. I have to show Elizabeth around. Maybe later?"

"Oh, sure," said Caroline, looking at Elizabeth with renewed interest. Her eyes wandered over Liz's simple, professional outfit and petit figure. She reviewed her with growing distrust and dislike. She dismissed Elizabeth as plain, bordering on ugly. But that didn't mean her William was safe. William's working in close quarters with any woman could jeopardize her chances with William. But Caroline satisfied herself in that Liz did not seem like a threat just because she wasn't attractive enough.

    But that was Caroline's assessment.

With a sickening, sugar-coated voice, Caroline addressed Liz, "So, darling! Your first day, huh?" She winked, while glancing at Will. "I hope William is treating you well!!"

Liz was disgusted by the way Caroline was throwing herself on William. And she hated her all-knowing, patronizing tone. So, she said, sweetly, "Oh, he's treating me fine! Just fine! I'm enjoying myself so much already that heaven knows I won't want to leave work from now on!" She smiled, and said to William, "Shall we go...darling?!"

William nodded and Liz smiled satisfied. As she was exiting the room, she said, "Bye, darling!"

Once they were out of the room, Liz was quick to drop the act and say, "Who was that??!!"

    William said, "Caroline...she's harmless..."

"If you don't mind conniving cats," Liz muttered under her breath.

    "What's that?" William said, suspiciously.

"Oh, nothing," said Liz, innocently. Then, "I hope I didn't make you very uncomfortable back there when I called you 'darling.' I just couldn't stand her."

"It's okay," said William. But then, he added, "Just make sure it doesn't happen again."

Fine! Okay, then! God, I don't like you! "Of course," she said aloud.

Liz spent rest of the morning meeting the other staff and getting accustomed to the office. Some of them were very nice to her and some were rather hostile. But Liz had been in the business long enough to understand that. She was very well aware of the jealousies and ugliness of the work place. And this would be no different.

Liz found, as she went around the office, that William was much admired by almost all the women who worked there. Maybe that's why he was so arrogant. During the entire tour, he hardly ever spoke to her except when introducing her to people and showing something important. He was so reserved, stiff and distant. When describing him, two words came to Liz's mind...arrogant jerk. So what if he was young, drop dead gorgeous and made a 6 figure salary. It still didn't give him the right to think that he was above everyone else. William was excessively proud, and pride was something Liz despised extremely.

The morning flew by pretty quickly and soon it was the lunch hour. William showed Liz to her office which was connected to William's by a door. William came to a stop in front of her office and said, "Well...it's time for lunch. The cafeteria is downstairs, if you want to grab a bite."

    "Thank you," Liz said.

"I would walk you down, but I have a lot to do up here...what with my morning spent with you..."

Well, I'm sorry I wasted so much of your precious time!! It was NOT my pleasure! Aloud, Liz said, "That's fine. I can find my way." She smiled an unpleasant smile and walked away from him. William stared after her. It had been a very interesting morning. Liz was unlike any woman he'd ever met. She seemed to dislike him a little...and William had never had that happen to him before. All women always loved him! They were all artful and flirtatious. But Liz was different. She was straightforward and outspoken. She wasn't beautiful, no. But nobody could call her plain. She was...well, she was Liz.

Meanwhile, Liz found her way to the cafeteria by simply following the crowd. She got herself a salad and juice and sat down. There was a young woman sitting across her. She smiled pleasantly at her, and Liz smiled back. The woman said, "You're the new Financial Adviser, aren't you?"

"Yes, that's right," Liz smiled back, trying to remember where she'd seen the woman. It must have been at the office, but she really couldn't remember her name.

As if reading her mind, the woman said, "Oh, don't bother trying to remember my name! I know it's hard. I remember my first day, too! Couldn't remember anyone's name for at least 2 weeks!! And even then, I got mixed up! Once I called my boss by the paperboy's name! Very embarrassing!"

Liz laughed heartily. The woman just smiled, "By the way, I'm Charlotte Lucas. I work in the Consumer Department. I met you this morning."

"Oh, that's right!" said Liz. "I remember now! Thanks for understanding, though. First days can be tough."

"Yeah," said Charlotte. "But you'll be fine. You'll be working with Will Darcy, right?"

    "Yes...unfortunately," Liz said softly.

"Unfortunately?? Why, more than half the woman staff in the office would die to be in your shoes!"

"Well, they're welcome to trade places with me anytime!" Liz exclaimed.

"Oh, come on!! He can't be that bad!"

Oh, yes he can! Liz thought. But not wanting to get into that kind of discussion with someone she barely knew, Liz said, "Oh well...let's see what happens." It was probably a good decision because just as Liz said that, a figure approached where they were sitting.

A familiar voice said, "Oh...Charlotte...I want those papers in by 5 o clock sharp!" then seeing Liz sitting, she said, "Oh Eliza darling! How nice to see you!"

Liz shuddered at the obnoxious contraction of her name Caroline had come up. But she simply said, "Yes, lovely!"

"I hope you aren't too intimidated by this new job," Caroline continued. "William can be so demanding sometimes. But really, once you get to know him, he's quite something."

"I bet he is," said Liz.

"To strangers, he might seem a little distant, but to old friends like me, he's quite charming and pleasant!! You are very lucky to be working with him. You'll learn a lot from him."

"Thanks," said Liz, trying her best to be civil. "I'll do my best to please William, any way he wants me to." This was said smugly, and Liz knew it would bother Caroline. She was right.

"Well...don't mess up," said Caroline. "William hates people who mess up!" She didn't give Liz time to answer. She walked away saying, "Ciao, darling!"

Liz turned to look at Charlotte, who said, "See what I mean! Women like Caroline will be jealous of you...very jealous."

"I don't have any intentions of taking her William, if that's what she's worried about," said Liz. "But I won't tell her that, of course. Let her make her own conclusions." Then, she added, "I'm so sorry you have to work for her."

"Well...I manage, I guess," Charlotte smiled.

They chatted a little more and before they knew it, lunch was over. It had been pleasant for them both and they knew they'd found a new friend. They cleared up and went up, separating at the office. "Bye! I'll see you later!" said Liz.

She walked to her room quietly thinking of the day so far. It hadn't been all bad. Pretty good, actually, except for the part when William was with her. She smiled to herself. She enjoyed being back home. Europe was great, but there was no place like home. Liz entered her room. She looked at the connecting door. William was on the other side. Liz didn't like the idea. In fact, she didn't like him. A part of her told her that she was being rather hard on him. Maybe it would be reasonable not to make up her mind against him that soon. Maybe she should give him another chance.

Liz sat down at her desk. She should probably go to see William, but she didn't feel like it. Just then, someone entered William's room and a voice was heard.

"Hey Will!" It was Rich. "Where's Liz?"

Due to the common, thin walls, Liz could hear him loud and clear. She knew she was eavesdropping, but hey!

    "In the cafeteria, eating lunch."

"Oh," said Rich. "I was on the phone, so I couldn't take her down. Oh well! Next time! But why aren't you with her?!"

"Is it absolutely necessary we spend every minute together?" asked William.

"YES!" exclaimed Rich. "She's new...couldn't you just eat lunch with her today?"

"No, I have a lot of work," said William.

"You always have a lot of work," Rich reproached him. "That's your problem."

"I don't see it as a problem," said Will, stiffly.

"Well, it is!" said Rich. "You have to get out more. And who better than Liz! She's very pretty and seems intelligent! What more can you ask?! This is your chance!"

As Rich said those words, Liz blushed. Rich was such a sweetie. She waited for Will's answer anxiously.

William said, "No, thank you, Rich. You can have her, if you want. She is tolerable, I suppose. But not attractive enough to tempt me. Now I'd appreciate it if you went away and let me do my work."

"Oh man! I don't believe you!" said Rich.

Liz was outraged! Who did he think he was?! So arrogant! So proud! What right did he have to put her down like that?! None. He was conceited and insufferable and Liz hated him. Yes, in one short day, she hated him. But she resolved not to let his remark pull her down. She resolutely walked to his room next door and knocked. Rich was still in there.

Liz smiled pleasantly, "Oh hi Rich! Mr. Darcy, I hope I'm not disturbing anything."

    Chapter 4

Posted on Friday, 18 June 1999

Liz flashed another smile at Rich, glancing coldly at William. "After all, it would be intolerable if I disturbed you in any way."

William looked up sharply as Liz said 'intolerable.' Had she heard his comment? He hoped not. He said, "No, no, Rich was just leaving." He looked at Rich as if signaling him to leave.

Rich said, "Oh alright! I know when I'm not wanted. I can take a hint!" He laughed, then said to Liz, "I'll see ya later, Liz. If you need anything, just tell me. Okay?"

"Yes, thanks so much, Rich," Liz said sincerely. "If it hadn't been for people like you, my first day would have been intolerable." Rich winked at Liz, smiled at William and left.

Is it just me or did it get a lot less cheerful in here? Aloud, Liz said, "I thought I'd make myself useful and start working on that paper from Brazil you mentioned, Mr. Darcy."

Mr. Darcy?? William said, "What's this all about? I thought we agreed that we should call each other by first names."

"Well..." Liz said. "I think it's better this way."

But she calls Rich by his name. Okay! Whatever! "Fine, Ms. Bennett," said William, frigidly. "Have it your way." He opened his drawer and brought out some papers. "This is the paper I mentioned. It's about that merger proposition with the Brazilian Coffee Company. But it's a little complicated. Are you sure you can handle it?"

Gosh! You condescending pig! Liz said frigidly, "Yes, Mr. Darcy, although my financial capabilities may not be comparable to yours, I think I can handle this. I specialize in mergers. While I was at Longbourn, I oversaw 3 major mergers. And it was too much of a disaster either."

William was internally kicking himself for saying the wrong thing again. He wasn't trying to be mean. But it just came out that way. "I have faith in your abilities, Ms. Bennett."

Liz grimaced, "Oh, thank you, Mr. Darcy. I don't know what I'd do without your blessing!"

William frowned. Liz sounded less than friendly, hostile even. Had she heard what he'd said about her? Was she the kind of person who really cared about things like that? Was she even worth all the thought he was giving to this? William decided not. He wanted nothing more than a comfortable working relationship with Liz and they could have that even if they weren't exactly friends.

"No need to be sarcastic, Ms. Bennett," he said coldly. "Now if you don't mind, I think we both have work to do."

"I was just leaving," said Liz and left almost immediately. Her dislike for William was growing by the second. She couldn't believe her luck. Why couldn't she have been assigned with Rich?? He was SO much better than William. This guy was unbearable and Liz didn't know how she was going to work with him in such a close manner.

    5:30 p.m.; the same day

Finally the day was over and Liz was impatient to get back home. She put away her papers and headed down. The elevator door was just about to close as Liz exclaimed, "Hold that elevator!!" She ran to the elevator, saying, "Thank you!"

She turned to find herself faced once again with the disapproving glance of William. He said, "Déjà-vous?" He was referring to their similar meeting at the elevator in the morning.

Slightly out of breath, Liz nodded. There was an uncomfortable silence. Then William said, "I hope your first day here was enjoyable?"

"Yes, thank you," said Liz, smiling wanly. Except for when I had to see you.

"I'm glad to hear it," he said shortly. They exited the elevator and walked to the parking lot. Will came to his red BMW and said to Liz, "I'll see you tomorrow then?"

    "Yeah," said Liz. "Bye."

She walked slowly to her car and looked back at William's flashy car. It was a really sporty, convertible, quite unlike the car Liz would have imagined William to own. He didn't seem like the type to drive something like that. She would have imagined him in a stuffy, conservative car. But then, she reminded herself, she didn't know him that well. And she didn't want to, either.

Twenty minutes later, Liz was pulling into Jane's driveway. She was eager to see Jane and Abby and tell them about her interesting day. Liz noticed another car in the driveway and wondered who the visitor was. She was going to find out soon. As Liz rang the bell, a familiar figure opened the door, and said, "HI!!!"

    It was Mrs. Bennett.

"Mom!!" Liz exclaimed, hugging her mother. "When did you come back?"

"This morning," said Mrs. Bennett, letting her daughter in. She'd been to visit her sister-in-law, Mrs. Gardiner.

"How's Aunt Maddy doing?" asked Liz, as she came in.

"She's fine, though she has some trouble with her knee."

"Oh," said Liz. "Is dad here, too?"

Even as she said it, Mr. Bennett appeared. "Where's my favorite girl?!"

"Daddy!" Liz exclaimed as she ran into her father's arms. Liz hadn't been home for more than a year and thus, hadn't seen her parents recently. When she had come to DC couple of days ago, they had been gone. And, as Mrs. Bennett said, they just arrived that day.

Mr. Bennett said, "Jane's not home yet, but we were adequately entertained by our wonderful granddaughter!"

Abby appeared from inside. Liz hugged her and said, "Had a good day, honey?"

    "Yes," said Abby.

"Were you nice to your grandma and grandpa?"

"Yes, she was," said Mr. Bennett, smiling. "We bored her a lot probably, but she didn't even yawn once!"

Abby protested, "I enjoyed it, grandpa! It's more boring to be all alone."

This remark made Liz guilty as she knew that part of the reason that Abby was lonely was because she didn't have any siblings. But since Liz couldn't have kids that was impossible. And besides, she didn't plan to get married anytime soon. There seemed no immediate solution to the problem.

"We'll move into our own house soon, dear," said Liz. "then you'll meet a lot of kids your age and won't be bored."

    "Yeah, I know," said Abby.

They went inside to the living room and talked about Liz's coming to Wash DC, etc. A little later Jane came home and was pleasantly surprised. She exclaimed, "Wow! You should have called me...I would have tried to come home earlier."

"It's OK, Jane," Liz assured her. "I'll go make coffee for everyone." Then, to Abby, "Chocolate milk for you."

"I'll help you," said Mrs. Bennett. She followed Liz to the kitchen. "So...Lizzy? How's the new job?"

"Oh, it's fine, mom," said Liz.

"I see," said Mrs. Bennett. "Meet many interesting people?"

"Yes," Liz answered wearily, knowing where this was heading.

"Oh...," said Mrs. Bennett. "Any interesting, young men?"

    "Mom!" Liz exclaimed.

    "What?! I'm just asking..."

"Well, there aren't any interesting men in my office," lied Liz. "And even if there were, I'm not looking for a relationship right now."

"Why not?!" Mrs. Bennett exclaimed loudly. "Do you plan to raise Abby by yourself?! Don't you see? You're not getting any younger..."

"Mom, we have this discussion every time I see you," Liz said, tiredly. "I don't intend to get married. My job and Abby take up all my time. I have no time to date. Now...if I were to fall in love, that's different."

"Oh, who cares about love?!" Mrs. Bennett said. "You don't want to die alone, so you?"

    "I have Abby, mom."

"She'll leave you soon, Liz. Don't live in the hope of keeping her forever. They grow up quite fast, you know."

There was some truth in what she said, but Liz didn't want to accept it. "Well, I'll deal with this my way, mom. Please don't try to force me into anything."

"Oh, you never listen to me! What's the use!" Mrs. Bennett moaned.

Liz sighed, and just then Jane came in, "Are you guys okay in here?"

"Yeah, fine," said Liz, but her eyes spoke otherwise. Jane saw that her mother was at it again. So she said, "Lizzy...why don't you go, sit down. I'll take it from here." Liz eyed a silent thank-you to Jane and left the kitchen without a word. She went to sit with her dad.

Mr. Bennett said, "I heard your mom's voice...the same discussion, eh?"

"Yeah," Liz smiled, glancing at Abby. "Same old, same old."

Mr. Bennett sighed. "Well, what can I say? I try my best."

"I know you do, dad. You're not to blame."

Abby had been listening very closely. At this point, she said, "You know, mom...you could date if you want. I have no problem with it."

"Oh honey!" Liz exclaimed. "That's really sweet. But I like it the way we are."

"Me too," said Abby. "But don't let me hold you back."

Right then, Jane and Mrs. Bennett came in with the coffee. They were just seated when Mrs. Bennett said, "Oh girls! Guess what? That big house in my neighborhood has been bought!"

    "You mean, Netherfield?" asked Jane.

"Yes! The very one! And you know who bought it?! A single man!!!"

    Jane and Liz exchanged glances.

    "Oh really?" Jane said.

"Yes! His name is Bingley. And he must be rich. That house is huge! And he drove a cool car!! Very expensive, red BMW."

Hmm...William drives one too. What a coincidence! Liz said, "Mom, it seems like you were spying on him!"

"Well, you can't help but notice if you have a new neighbor," Mrs. Bennett defended herself.

"Yeah, but, mom, you know every detail of his life...I won't wonder if you knew his social security number!!" Liz commented.

Mrs. Bennett gave her a dirty look, but continued, "Anyway, as I was saying, he is moving in soon. So, if course, there will be many house warming parties. The Lucases are giving one this weekend and I want you both to come!"

    "The Lucases?" Liz inquired.

"Oh, they moved in next to us about 3 years ago," Mrs. Bennett informed her. "While you were away...they're nice, I guess, but they have too many kids. And their eldest daughter isn't married yet. She's 30, too!"

"Mom, please!" Liz said. "I'm sure they are very nice people, but I don't want to go. I'll be out house-hunting this weekend. I talked to a realtor already."

"You do that during the day, dear," Mrs. Bennett insisted. "But you have to come to the party. I promised Jill Lucas that you would be there."

"No way, mom!" Liz exclaimed, looking at Jane for support. "I won't know anyone and besides what do I have to do with this Bingley guy's house warming party?!"

"Lizzy, don't argue with me," said Mrs. Bennett. "It's just a little social gathering and I want to share it with my girls. Is that so much to ask? You've come back home after 12 years...don't you at least owe me a party?"

Liz sighed, knowing she had lost. Her mom always knew how to use the guilt factor. "Oh, alright, I'll be there. But only for a short time."

    "Yay! That's my girl!!"

"Lydia and Kitty will be there, I suppose?" asked Liz. She wasn't exactly sure she wanted to see her younger sisters make a fool of themselves, but she had no choice.

"Of course! They love parties!" Mrs. Bennett said.

After a little more talk about the party, Mr. And Mrs. Bennett took their leave, saying goodbye and hoping to see them on Saturday. Liz waved at the window and then turned to Jane and said, "Oh, I can't believe this!!"

Jane smiled, sipping her coffee. "Oh, c'mon! It won't be that bad!"

"Oh yes, it will," Liz sighed, sinking into the sofa. "I don't know how she does it but she does it. Mom just knows how to get me all worked up."

"Oh, Lizzy! You know she doesn't mean it like that. She's just very concerned about us."

"I know," Liz said. "But I'm a grown woman. I can take care of myself." Liz sighed, then looked at Abby, "We'll have to find something suitable for you to wear..."

"Me?!!" Abby exclaimed. "I'm not going!!"

    "Yes you are," said Liz.

"No, I'm not. Grandma said nothing about me going."

"So?" Liz challenged her. "I say you should go. That way I won't suffer alone."

    "But you'll have Aunt Jane!"

"Yeah, but she'll off dancing with her dozen admirers!" Liz exclaimed, while Jane just shook her head laughing.

Jane said, "Lizzy, I know what you're up to."

"Up to? Me?" Liz feigned innocence.

"Yeah, you," said Jane. "You're going to bore poor Abby to death just because you don't want to mingle with the crowd. You'll be like 'oh, I have to stay with my daughter'. Then you won't be obliged to dance or talk too much!!"

"Jane, I'm shocked!" Liz exclaimed. "That would never have occurred to me! But now that you mention it, that could work!!" She saw Jane's disapproving look. "Oh, I know! I'm being selfish. Abby, honey, you don't have to go if you don't want to. I guess you would get bored there. But while you're here, in peace and quiet, watching TV, think of me!"

They all laughed at that. Liz could be so dramatic sometimes. It was very funny. Then, Jane asked, "Oh, I didn't get a chance to ask you...how was your first day?"

"Oh! It was interesting, I guess," replied Liz.

"You guess?" Jane repeated. "Details, please?"

"Well, I mean the people are nice. Most of them, anyway," Liz said, thinking of William. "I have a big office and everything and the job is very interesting and complex. My boss, Mr. Larry Cougar is very nice, and I made friends with couple of people."

    "But...?" Jane prompted her.

"But my associate is a jerk and I hate him!" Liz exclaimed. She looked at Abby, "Honey, why don't you go to your room and watch TV or something?" Abby nodded, understandingly and left the adults alone.

"Okay," said Jane as soon as Abby was gone. "So, it's a him, is it?"

"Yes, it is," Liz said. "And he's gorgeous, too. But before you get anything in your head, he's the snootiest, coldest, most reserved and emotionless person I've ever met!"

"Lizzy! You know him for one day! And you're using superlatives already! Aren't you being too severe on him? Come on...what'd he do?"

"He was just being mean and supercilious about everything," Liz said. "It was like he thought he was way better than me. And he even had the nerve to ask me whether the work was too hard for me!"

"And...?" Jane said, knowing there had to be more.

"Well, I overheard something he said about me to his friend, Rich. And I quote... 'She is tolerable, I suppose, but not attractive enough to tempt me'. Yes! That's what he said!"

"Ah-ha!" Jane exclaimed. "There's the problem, right there! So, that's why you don't like him!"

"No, Jane! I'm not that vain," Liz protested. "I didn't like him from the start and then that little incident just confirmed my opinions. And I'm sure he likes me even less than I like him. So I guess it's mutual!"

"But Lizzy, if you have to work closely with him, isn't it prudent for you to be on speaking terms with him?"

"Oh, we are. We just don't speak unless absolutely necessary!"

Jane laughed, "Oh, I can just picture it! Btw, what's his name? What does he look like?"

"William Darcy, I think," replied Liz. "And he's tall, dark and handsome with dark curly hair and brown eyes. Too bad, he's such an arrogant jerk!!!"

"But Lizzy, you don't know that yet," Jane smiled. "Who knows? You may find that he's better than you expected."

"No, Jane," Lizzy laughed. "There's not much chance of that!"

    Chapter 5

    Meanwhile, at the Darcys

William was on the phone with Charles. "But I don't understand why you want me to come?!" said William, while making dinner with his free hand. "I won't know any of the people and I'll be bored!!!"

"Oh, come on, Will," said Charles on the other line. "For me? It won't be so awful. They're very nice, really. And the girls will be pretty, too!!"

"Take Caroline with you," Will suggested.

"She might come, anyway, but I need you for support. Please?"

"Oh, alright," Will sighed. "But you owe me big time!"

    "I sure do! Thanks!"

"Can I bring Crystal?" asked William.

"Sure! Why not? If she wants to come, that is."

"Okay, I'll ask her." William hung up and called his daughter, "Crystal!! Dinner's almost ready. Come down please!"

Minutes later Crystal descended, gave her dad a quick kiss and sat down.

"I made your favorite lasagna," William said, serving.

    "Mmmm," Crystal said. "Smells good."

They sat down to eat. Then, William said, "Uncle Charles has invited us to his house warming party on Saturday. Want to come?"

"Sorry, dad," said Crystal. "But I'm going to Jessie's sleep-over, remember?"

"Oh, that's this weekend?" William asked.

"Yeah, which reminds me, I still need to get her a present. Can I have some money please?"

William looked disapprovingly at her. "What happened to your allowance?"

"I spent it," she said, softly.

"All $20! In 1 week? How?" William asked.

"I bought the new Backstreet Boys' CD!!"

"The who?" William asked. "Who're they?"

"Only the hottest, most popular boy band around!" Crystal exclaimed. "I had to wait in line for 3 hours to get it. And it's awesome!!"

William said, "So, now you want money for Jessie's present? What makes you think I'll give it to you?"

Crystal pouted, twirled her hair, cocked her head and said, "PLEASE???? Pretty please? I'll pay you back, promise!" Crystal knew her dad could never resist her. She could always get what she wanted by playing the right cards. And she won, again.

William's eyes softened, "Okay...but promise this will never happen again."

"Never!!!" Crystal jumped from her seat and kissed her dad. "Oh, thank you! You're the best!!!"

William smiled, then told her to sit down and finish dinner. He said, "Are you sure you won't come to the party, just to protect me?"

    "From who?" Crystal was amused.

"All the potentially dangerous females, of course!"

Crystal laughed, "Don't worry, dad. You'll be fine. Just do your 'I'm-in-a-bad-mood-don't-come-near-me' glare and they'll all stay away!!!"

William and Crystal laughed and continued with their meal. Anyone who could have seen William at that moment would not have believed that it was the same William who acted so detached and unemotional. His love and tenderness for Crystal was so evident that even Liz would have recognized his warm and caring side.

    The next few days

It would be too much to say that William and Liz got along well, but they did cooperate with each other. They talked only when required and even then it was strictly business. There was little unpleasantness at times when Caroline came over to visit her 'darling' but apart from that Will and Liz succeeded in tolerating and not killing each other.

Meanwhile, Liz formed a beautiful friendship with Charlotte and Rich. She had lunch with Charlotte every day and sometimes Rich joined them. Liz found that both Char and Rich were sensible, funny, witty people who never failed to make her laugh. Many of their jokes were at Caroline's expense. One day, Rich was telling them a story over lunch.

"...I was probably around 20 or 21 and Will was the same age. We were all at this Hawaiian beach resort for summer...Will's friend Charles and his sister, 'darling' Caroline were also there. And of course, Caroline had the hots for him way back then. So, she kept trying to get his attention. But Will didn't like her..."

"Boy, some things don't change," Liz commented.

Rich continued, "Anyway, so Will used to try and elude her and avoid her so that she didn't follow him. But she always found him. And that really annoyed him. So, whenever Caroline knocked at his cabin door, he would climb out the back window and run. One day, there was this huge dance in the resort and everyone was invited. Naturally, Caroline turned up at his door. William was still in his towel, but he climbed out the window, nonetheless. But there was a problem. He locked himself out..."

    "Oh gosh!" Char exclaimed.

Rich nodded, "Yes, he did. And he only had a towel around him. The rest of us were at the dance already. So, if he wanted to get in and change he'd have to come to the party to get the keys...the party was at the beach, btw. Well, it was rather cold out there at night, so he couldn't stay out. So he came to the party, very discreetly. Unluckily, Caroline spied him and he ran in the opposite direction. Somehow, he got on the stage just when the music stopped. Apparently, there was going to be an exotic dancer at this party...and all the girls thought it was William!!! After all, he was dressed in a towel! I'll never forget the expression on his face as he said, 'Oops' and ran!! It's the funniest thing ever!! And even then Caroline ran after him. I tracked him down later and gave him the keys. But till this day, William gets teased about that incident. Just mention 'towel' or 'resort' to him. He'll blush like you've never seen him!!!"

This narrative greatly amused Liz as it proved to her that William did have a human side...a long time ago. And after lunch, she was dying to mention it to him. She wanted to see him blush and be uncomfortable. She didn't know why. But anyway, the opportunity presented itself when they started talking about island economies.

Liz observed, "I hear that Hawaii is fast becoming one of the most crowded tourist spots. Especially, with all those fancy beach resorts."

William said something indistinct. Liz continued, "I'm not very familiar with Hawaiian economy...but I think it's based on tourism and export of cotton cloth, especially, towels."

William looked up sharply as she said that and saw Liz trying to contain her laughter. He said, "Rich told you???"

    "Yeah," Liz nodded.

William blushed, "Oh...he's going to die!"

Liz laughed and said, "Oh, please! Admit it, this is hilarious!!!"

William watched as Liz laughed heartily and could help but observe the beautiful expression of her fine eyes. They had this incredible depth and laughing quality to them and they sparkled when she laughed or teased anyone. William had noticed her eyes often and had to admit to himself that she was, in fact, not that bad looking after all.

"Well, maybe to you," said William, smiling at her infectious laugh. "But when I was standing in the middle of the stage with a 100 girls expecting a stripper, I can't say I was pleasantly surprised."

"And then, there was always Caroline chasing after you!"

William groaned, "Yes, and there was that!"

Liz laughed again and thought that this was the first time she had had an actual conversation with William. She thought that he looked so much better when he laughed. And his dimples were adorable. Yes, he should definitely smile more. Maybe, he wasn't so bad, after all.

    Saturday; at the Lucases

Jane parked her car and said to Liz, "This is it."

"Let's leave while we still can," Liz pleaded.

"Lizzy!" Jane smiled. "It'll be fine."

"You're optimistic to a fault, Jane," said Liz as they left the car.

"Why, thank you," said Jane. "I like to be thought of that way."

Liz and Jane laughed as they entered the house. The party was in full swing although the guest of honor wasn't there yet. Mr. And Mrs. Bennett were already there. Lydia and Kitty were probably dancing somewhere. Mrs. Bennett waved at them and motioned them to come over. She was standing with a middle aged lady. Jane and Liz went over to see her.

Mrs. Bennett exclaimed, "Jane! Lizzy! I want you to meet Jill Lucas."

"Hi!" said Mrs. Lucas. "I've heard so much about you girls."

Jane and Liz talked with her a bit. Then, as Lizzy was heading for the soda bar, she spied someone very familiar. "Charlotte!!" she exclaimed.

    "Liz!!"

"What are you doing here?" they said in unison.

Charlotte said, "This is my mom's house...we're throwing this party!"

"Oh, your mom invited my mom and she invited me!" Liz exclaimed.

The friends laughed at this strange coincidence. "Well, I won't get bored to death, then!" Liz said.

Then, Char said, looking over her shoulders, "Well, well. This should be interesting. Look who's here."

Liz turned around to see William, Caroline and another blond man enter the room! "What is he doing here?" Liz asked. "Did you invite him?"

"No!" said Char. "I hardly ever talk to him. Are you sure you didn't ask him to come!"

"NO!" Liz protested. She saw her mom waving at her, motioning her to come to her. Liz said to Char, "Oh, what's mom up to now? Be right back, Char..."

Liz walked over to where her mom and Jane were standing. Mrs. Bennett said, "That's them, girls. I know the blond guy is Bingley. And the other one is probably his friend or something. OH! They're coming over! Smile, girls, smile!!!"

Jane and Liz exchanged amused glances. Mr. Lucas and the two gentlemen came over. Mr. Lucas said, "Mrs. Bennett...I'd like to introduce Charles Bingley and William Darcy. This is Mrs. Bennett."

Mrs. Bennett said, "And these are my daughters, Jane and Lizzy."

Charles was quick to say, "I'm very pleased to meet you, Mrs. Bennett." Just then, the music for the dance changed. He said, "Jane, would you care to dance?"

Jane blushed and smiled, "Sure." And they walked to the dance floor.

Mrs. Bennett said to William, "And you, Mr. Darcy. Do you dance?"

"Very rarely," he replied, glancing briefly at Lizzy.

"Oh, but you must!" insisted Mrs. Bennett. "For you hardly find such lively music or such beautiful partners." This said with a glance at Lizzy, who blushed deeply.

William made no reply. He just inclined his head and walked away from them.

"Well!!" said Mrs. Bennett. "How very rude! That insufferable man! Poor Lizzy!"

"Mom!" Lizzy exclaimed. "I say it's his loss. I didn't want to dance with him anyway."

Lizzy walked away trying to look for Charlotte. She tried to tell herself that William's behavior did not affect her in any way, but that was not true. She didn't want to admit it, but she was hurt by his coldness. It hurt her pride and dignity. Lizzy wasn't vain, but she didn't think she was that unattractive either. Her hatred for William was increasing.

Lizzy gave up trying to look for Charlotte and went to get herself a drink. While she was standing there a voice beside her said, "Hi."

Lizzy looked at her neighbor. It was William. So, now he wants to say hi? "Oh, it's you."

They fell into silence. Then, William said, "I didn't expect to see you here."

Lizzy looked at him. "Sorry to spoil your evening."

"No, I didn't mean it like that!" William said quickly.

"Do I look like I care?" she asked testily. She got up, "Now if you'll excuse me, I've to call to check up on my daughter..."

Liz has a daughter? William thought. Is she married?

William got up, too. "Wait, I'll come too!"

    "Why?" Liz glared at him.

"I have to call my daughter, too."

William has a daughter? Liz thought. Is he married?

They both stared at each other with that one thought in mind.

    Chapter 6

Posted on Saturday, 19 June 1999

Liz was the first to break the silence. "Okay, fine. Let's go." Hmmm...but he isn't wearing a ring...maybe he's divorced?

William glanced at Liz, noticing that she wasn't wearing a ring. Maybe she was divorced? Aloud, he said, "How old is your daughter?"

    "Almost 13," replied Liz, shortly.

    "Mine too," said William.

"That's nice," Liz said, testily. Like I want to know? Growing up with a man like this...poor girl!

Liz went out of the room, whipped out her cell phone and dialed Jane's home number. Abby picked it up after a few rings. "Hello?"

    "Abby, honey, it's me."

    "Hey mom! Having fun?"

"As much fun as I can have without you here," Liz said. "Did you eat your dinner?"

    "Yeah."

"Good, I'll be there later. I want you in bed before I come. Okay?"

    Abby sighed. "Yeah, fine."

    "I love you."

"Love you, too, mom." After saying goodbye, Liz and Abby hung up.

Meanwhile, William called Crystal at her friend's house. He'd had the foresight to get the number before she left for the sleep-over. Someone else picked up the phone, but Crystal soon came on line. "Hello? Dad?"

"Hi honey!" William said. "How are you?"

"Dad! I'm fine! I told you not to call me here!"

"I just wanted to check up on you..."

Crystal sighed. "I know...how's the party?"

"Boring as usual," said William. Then, glancing at Liz who was talking to her daughter. "But I did find someone interesting..."

    "Really?" exclaimed Crystal. "A lady?"

    "Yeah."

    "Cool! Have fun, dad!"

"You too, sweetie. And don't stay up too late!"

"Yeah right!" Crystal laughed. Then, "Bye! Love you!"

"Love you too." William hung up almost simultaneously with Liz. He looked at her, "Is she alright?"

"Yes, thanks. And yours?" Liz asked.

    "Yeah, she's at a sleep-over."

"I see." But instead of going back inside, Liz sat on the steps of the porch.

William said, "Aren't you going in?"

"Not until I'm missed. It's too hot in there," replied Liz.

William thought for a moment, debating what to do. "Do you mind if I join you?"

Yes, very much! "No, go ahead." Liz thought it'd be too rude even for her. And besides, she didn't have to talk too much. She would just enjoy the calm, warm air and the gentle breeze. It was rather dark outside except for the porch lights. Liz was very fond of the outdoors and she loved being there. She just stared into space for a while, but then she felt William's eyes on her.

She turned to him and said, "Is something the matter?"

    William was surprised, "Um...no. Why?"

"You were staring," Liz informed him.

"Oh, sorry," William said softly and looked away. He didn't know what was wrong with him. But the nearness of Liz made him want to touch her glowing face, her delicate features and fine eyes. He could have slapped himself for being caught. He didn't want Liz to get her hopes high by thinking that he was attracted to her. Maybe he was, but he would never want her to know. He didn't want a relationship, so he would only break her heart. "I didn't mean to." He added.

They relapsed into silence, a little awkward, but most welcome to both. They would have been thus for a long time had not an all too familiar voice addressed them from behind them. "Well, well, well. How very cozy!!!"

    It was Caroline.

William looked back, "Oh, hi, Caroline."

"I'm sorry to disturb you, Will. I'll go away if you like?" Caroline said sweetly, while glaring at Liz.

"No, no, that's okay," said William. He felt like he needed Caroline to divert him from Liz. "We were just enjoying the fresh air."

"Oh! How wonderful! I love fresh air!" Caroline cooed.

"Care to join us?" William asked.

Do I?! "Sure, if you insist," Caroline said prettily, sitting down between Will and Liz. She said to Liz, "So, Eliza, darling, I see you have a rather big family!"

Is that any of your business? "Yes, I do."

    "I think you have 4 sister...am I right?"

    "Yes," Liz replied shortly.

"How sweet! I met 3 of them today. Your sister Jane is very nice, very sweet. My brother Charles has been raving about her. And there were your younger sister...what are their names?"

    "Kitty and Lydia..."

"Yes! They're...interesting. They were too busy dancing to talk much."

"Oh." Liz looked at Caroline, trying to see where she was heading.

"They are a little loud, don't you think. They're in college, I understand?"

    "Yes they are."

"Maybe you could give them a hint about sophisticated behavior in large gatherings. They probably need a little guidance, don't you think?"

"Caroline, darling," said Liz, testily. "I thank you for your concern, but I don't think I need to be told how my sisters should be raised." Liz looked at Caroline angrily. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I think my mother is looking for me." She got up and went inside without a word to William.

Caroline was satisfied. She said to William, "Well! I think I might have upset poor Eliza! She's probably embarrassed! But who wouldn't be with a mother and sisters like hers?!"

William made no comment. Caroline continued, "These people have no finesse or sophistication whatsoever. It just goes to show how important it is to mix with people your own class!"

    "Yes," William agreed.

Heartened, Caroline added, "I think Eliza should be very careful who she associates with...a family background like hers can do her no good! And her own manners! Shocking! It seems like she really hasn't been out much." Caroline paused, but William said nothing. So, Caroline added, "What do you think, William?"

William said, "I think that Elizabeth has uncommonly pretty eyes." This was said with a quiet calmness. And then, William got up and left the porch to go back inside.

Only two words came out of Caroline's mouth, "Argh! Damn!"

Once inside, William saw that the dancing had stopped temporarily. He located his friend Charles, who was deep in conversation with the lovely Jane. William scanned the crowds to find one face her really wanted to see. He saw her talking with an older man, a Mr. Foster. William moved closer to hear what she was saying.

"...so you see," Liz was saying. "Old fashioned balls were much more structured and a lot more sexist than today's dances. Only the guy could ask the girl to dance and usually, the girl was obliged to accept because her social status depended on how many dances she was asked to dance..." Liz stopped, on spying William.

She addressed him archly, "What do you think, Mr. Darcy?"

William was surprised at being addressed thus, and said, "Um...you're absolutely right."

"So, isn't it fortunate for us women that times have changed?"

    "Yes."

"But the remnants of those days still remain," Liz continued. "It's still a man's world in many ways. But I don't think I'll bore you gentlemen by sharing my feminist views on that subject." She smiled at them both and walked away to find Charlotte.

William was contemplating on her, as the dancing commenced. He saw Liz walk across the room, talking to several people before finding Charlotte Lucas. He was so absorbed in observing her that he failed to see Bill Lucas standing next to him. Then, finally, Mr. Lucas said, "I enjoy dancing so much, Mr. Darcy. Such a pleasure to watch. It's the supreme pastime for every polished society."

"And every unpolished one," returned William. "Every savage can dance."

Mr. Lucas simply smiled and said, "Nevertheless, it's so much watching young people enjoy themselves." He saw Charles and Jane join the dance floor. "And your friend excels in this art so much."

"He does indeed," William said dryly.

"I suppose you dance yourself," Mr. Lucas pried.

"Yes, but very rarely," responded William, a little annoyed.

"Don't you think it would be a proper compliment to this place if you did?" said Mr. Lucas pleasantly. Then, seeing Liz walk by them, an idea struck him. He called her. "Ms. Eliza!" She walked near them. "Why are you not dancing?! You must dance with Mr. Darcy. Although he dances very rarely, I'm sure he'd love to." Saying so, he took Liz's hand and would have given it to William had not she withdrawn it.

A little decomposed, Liz said, "I hope you don't think that I came this way to beg for a partner?"

"Not at all," said Mr. Lucas. "But it's such a good idea!" He looked at William who said, "I'd be happy to dance with you."

"Mr. Darcy is all politeness," commented Liz with a slight smile.

"Isn't he?" said Mr. Lucas. "But who could resist when so much is beauty before him?"

Liz just smiled and said, "I thank you, but I don't intend to dance." With a parting look, she walked away from them.

Liz found Charlotte and said, "Oh god, William Darcy is annoying!"

"What did he do now?" Charlotte said, amused.

"He's just so, so...I don't know...high and mighty! I can't tolerate him!" She looked around, then saw her sister with Charles. "At least someone is having a good time."

Char followed her line of vision and said, "Yeah."

"I'm so happy for her. No one deserves to happy more than my sister. And Charles seems like a nice person."

"I hope things work out for her."

    "Yeah, me too," said Liz.

Charlotte saw that William was looking at them again. She said, "William looks at you a great deal, Liz."

Liz glanced at him, sipping a drink, standing all alone. "I know! And I don't understand why!"

    "Maybe he likes you?"

"No way! We hate each other...it's a mutual thing, I'm pretty sure! Maybe there's something about me that doesn't conform to his sense of right."

"Oh Liz!!!" Charlotte and Liz laughed heartily, while stealing glances at William, who was disconcerted because he was pretty sure they were talking about him.

The party continued till about 1 in the morning. Most everyone had a good time with the exception of William, Liz and Caroline. William had been very bored in the beginning, but later had been confused by his mixed feelings for Liz. Liz had just been plain bored and disliked Will's being there. She had been very embarrassed by the rowdiness of her younger sisters and was very annoyed by her mother. And Caroline just plain resented Liz and spent her time trying to gain Will's attention.

All in all, it had been an interesting party.

Once in the car, Liz talked with Jane. "So?! I see that you had a good time!"

Jane blushed, "Yes, it was a lovely party, wasn't it?"

"Depends on how you see it," Liz said dryly. "But I think that you would agree with me when I say that Charles Bingley is a charming man!"

Jane blushed once again. "Yes, he was very sweet."

"Just sweet?" Liz exclaimed. "I think he was more than sweet, Jane. He was very attractive, and he seemed to like you a great deal, which says a lot about his judgement!"

Jane laughed, "Lizzy! I think that he was very pleasant and charming and I like him."

Liz looked slyly at her sister, "Oh, I see." Briefly, she added, "So, when are you seeing him again?"

    Jane laughed, "Lizzy!!! Um...tomorrow night."

Liz laughed triumphantly, "That was fast!! I wish you guys all the luck in the world!"

Jane smiled at her sister, "Thanks!"

    Meanwhile

Charles was grinning, "I say it was fabulous!" William and Caroline were sitting on the couch in the living room at Netherfield. Since it was just houses away from the Lucas Hose, they had simply walked.

"How can you say that?" demanded Caroline. "I was bored terribly!"

Charles said, "You people don't know how to have fun!"

"I'm sure you do," commented William.

"Yes I do," Charles declared. "Jane is so sweet! I'm seeing her again tomorrow!"

    "Yes, she is sweet."

"Oh come on, man! Admit it. She's an angel!!!"

"She smiles too much," William said.

"Well, I think," said Caroline. "that Jane is a very nice girl, but the mother! And the sisters! Oh, they're too much to bear! Especially that Eliza Bennett!!!"

"I think Elizabeth is very pretty," said Charles. "What do you think William? Isn't she pretty?"

William wasn't sure what he thought of her. But to avoid further comment from Caroline he said, "I would as soon call her mother a wit."

Charles exclaimed, shocked at this, while Caroline laughed heartily, satisfied.

    The next day; 3:00 p.m.

"What will I wear, Lizzy?" Jane moaned.

"Jane, calm down!" said Liz, getting ready to go the mall. "You have 4 hours at least! Wear something simple. You'll look gorgeous."

"Where are you going?" asked Jane.

"I'm taking Abby to the mall. She really needs some new clothes."

"Okay, but when will you be back?" asked Jane.

"In 2 hours, probably," said Liz. She kissed Jane on her cheeks. "Don't worry, you'll be fine!" Then she walked to the door and said, "Abby honey!! Are you ready?!"

"Yes, mom!" Abby appeared from her room.

Liz smiled and said to Jane, "Okay, we'll be going now. Take care!"

"Bye! Have a good time, you two!"

Liz and Abby left. They were going to the Tyson's Corner Mall, recommended by Jane. The traffic was rather heavy, although it was Sunday afternoon. After almost half an hour, Liz pulled into the parking lot and her car. She noticed a red BMW parked next to her, but she didn't pay much attention.

Once in, they walked from store to store, looking for the best clothes. After stopping at several smaller stores, Liz and Abby entered Abercrombie & Fitch, which was trendy, but a little expensive.

Abby spied very cute Capri pants with a matching top. "Mom! Can I try those! They're so cute!!"

Liz frowned at the price tag, but seeing Abby so excited said, "Okay, sure."

They made their way to the dressing rooms and Abby went in to change. Liz noticed a familiar-looking man holding some shopping bags, standing with his back towards her. It was William! Liz was determined not to say anything so as to escape his notice. But as luck would have it, he turned.

    "Oh, Elizabeth!" he exclaimed.

He had never called her by that name, and Liz thought it sounded very nice. "Hi William," she said.

"What are you doing here?" asked William. Duh! What do people do in malls.

"I'm waiting for my daughter. She's trying something on," Liz said.

"Yeah, me too," said William, smiling. "Girls want clothes."

"They sure do!" Liz said. She heard Abby's door creak. "I think she's coming out."

The two adjacent doors opened and out came...
