He ran swiftly down the corridor towards the great hall, where sat his father. He bolted passed the guards and skidded to a stop upon reaching the hall entrance. He quietly gathered his courage and stepped inside.
"Darconas!" the voice thundered. "Come!"
Darconas' golden sandals clicked loudly as he moved against the tiled floor. The Pharaoh's court bowed to the ground upon the appearance of the Prince. He reached the bottom of the steps and knelt down.
"Yes, Father. You desired my presence?"
"Yes, my son. Arise and come and sit with me." The Pharaoh motioned his son closer. With one heavy thud of his staff on the floor, the hall quickly emptied. Darconas climbed the steps and sat at his father's feet.
"How are you, my son?" He asked, resting his hand on his shoulder.
"I am well, Father."
"I have been watching you. You are growing in knowledge and in the ways of a Pharaoh, and I am very pleased."
"Thank you, Father. I still have much to learn."
The Pharaoh exhaled slowly. "The day is coming that you shall arise and rule Pemberlonia, as I did once from my father, and he from his father before him."
"Yes, but that will be many years yet." replied Darconas.
"No, it shall not, for I have grown weary and have not the strength that I did once." smiled his father.
"But Father," stammered Darconas, "I have so much to learn. I am not ready."
"You are more ready than you think."
"But Father, I beg, a little more time. I am fearful of making a mistake."
His father leaned back. "No more than I. You will make them and you will learn from them."
"I am afraid of disappointing you."
"You shall never disappoint me." he smiled at his son. "You have learned well and you shall continue to learn, even until the time your son becomes Pharaoh."
"When is this to come to pass, Father?"
The Pharaoh arose and stood behind the throne. "In six full moons, you will become Pharaoh. You will honor your family and continue in our ways. You will rule Pemberlonia with a strong and mighty hand."
Darconas stands up. "Shall I ever be able to accomplish your equal?"
"There are many things yet that I did not achieve as Pharaoh. The well being of the people should be your first and foremost desire. They will not work for a king that does not respect them."
"I promise you, father, that I shall not disappoint you. I shall do my best to make you proud of me. I will be ready when the time comes." smiled Darconas at his father.
"Good. Now, there is only one more thing that I must tell you." He took a deep breath and continued. "According to Pemberlonian law, the ruling Pharaoh must be married."
"Married?" asks Darconas. "But Father, you know that I am not married!"
"Of that I am aware, but you have six full moons to become so."
"That is not enough time and besides, I am not ready to marry!" states Darconas, astonished.
"You are ready to become Pharaoh, are you not?" blasts his father.
Darconas nods meekly.
"Then," continued his father. "You are ready to wed."
"But Father," He ventures. "There is no one whom I feel that way about."
"There are a number of young ladies in the Pharaoh's court. Many of whom are very well looking. Choose one from there."
"So, I should just pick out the woman who is the most beautiful and ask her to marry me. Is that how it is done?" quips Darconas. "Should I line them all up and go back and forth down the line narrowing it down to the perfect one?"
The Pharaoh eyes narrowed. "Do not be obnoxious, my son. I can not change the law."
Darconas appealed to his father. "Forgive me, but should I not feel something for this woman who will eventually become the mother of my children and of your grandchildren?"
The Pharaoh sat back down on his throne. "I was fortunate enough to be in love with your mother, but it does not always work out that way. Whether you like it or not, this is the way it is to be." stated his father, leaning back. "I venture to suggest that the answer to your problem lies in the land of Londonis, wherein is a young lady who very much favors you."
"Do not bring up Caracone. You know I care nothing for her." grimaced Darconas. "She tries too hard to please me. I do not like women that bow and simper."
"Only a suggestion." sighed his father, rising from his throne. He touched his son on the back, "Do not worry so. I am sure you will have no trouble finding someone."
He descended the stairs and began walking across the floor of the great hall when he stopped. "I leave you with this, under the law if you are not married before the sixth full moon, the palace and all its treasures will go to the High Priest, Wickolus."
"You are jesting, Father!"
"I wish I were, but it is true." he replied. "The throne is passed to the High Priest if the Prince is unable to fulfill his duties. Perhaps you shall bear this information in mind in your search for the perfect Queen."
"Father," begs Darconas. "Please advise me!"
The Pharaoh continued to walk towards the end of the hall. "I am too weary. I must rest. Perhaps your friend, Bingflaetus can offer some advice."
And with that, he left the hall. Darconas flopped down on his father's chair.
"Bingflaetus?" he cried in disbelief. "What does Bingflaetus know?"
Part 2
Darconas stepped out of his chaise and looked upon the home of his friend. Pleasant memories rushed in. As young boys, he and Bingflaetus spent many days about the grounds, in the days when it was safe for the Pharaoh's son to be away from home.
As he grew older, the visits became fewer. His life became too consumed with learning to even pay a short visit to his friend. He broke his stare and ordered his men to wait.
His friend, upon hearing the arrival of the chaise, bounded down the stairs. "Darconas, my friend. It has been too long!"
Darconas grasped his hand and hugged him. "So it has."
"I think at least six months." countered Bingflaetus, leading him up the stairs. "So, what brings the Pharaoh and his entourage to Londonis? No doubt he has important business here."
"My father is not with me." replied Darconas. "I came alone."
"Oh. Then you are no longer immersed in your studies?"
"My studies persist but a more important matter has taken precedence."
The two friends enter the hall and walk slowly together towards a small gathering of people. Darconas' eyes search the crowd. Suddenly the figure he so dreads seeing, approaches them.
"Prince Darconas. We are honored." bows Caracone.
"Caracone. Pleasure to see you, as always." returns Darconas. He looks at Bingflaetus who offers a sideways grin as a reply.
Caracone laces her arm through Darconas' and pulled him towards the group. "Allow me to introduce you to our friends."
Darconas gently pulls back. "I have a matter of importance to discuss with your brother, if you do not mind. I will join you later."
Caracone surrenders and releases her grip. She watches as the two disappear down the corridor. Her eyes began to gleam and moisten with tears. She blinks them rapidly. Quickly, she began a search for her sister.
"Louisatra, come. I must tell you something." cried Caracone, tugging at her sister.
Caracone pulls her into an adjoining room and cranes her head to see if anyone was following. Assured of secrecy, she began.
"Oh, sister. It is happening." She cried, joyfully, looking back once more for good measure.
Louisatra looked at her puzzled. "What is happening?"
"The Prince. He is here."
"Darconas is here? I did not see him arrive." replied Louisatra.
"It does not signify much that you did not. I did and that's all that matters. He speaks with our brother now." sighed Caracone, clasping her hands together against her chest.
"That is not uncommon. He generally speaks with our brother." answered Louisatra, smartly.
"He does, but now it is with a purpose."
"Which is?"
"The Prince needs a wife. He is to become Pharaoh."
"How do you know that?"
"Well, his father is old and its time that he stepped down and made way for his son. The only problem is the Prince has to be married. It is a law." grinned Caracone.
"And you are assuming he is here to ask for your hand?"
"What else?" answered she, smugly.
The cloaked figure hurried along the corridor, passing many openings, finally slipping inside a darkened passageway. She fell into his embrace.
"What is it my love? Did he not propose?"
"No." she cried. "He sent my brother to tell me that he would not be approaching me in his search for a Queen. He felt the match unsuitable."
"I am sorry." He answered softly. "Could he possibly change his mind?"
"I do not think so. He was perfectly clear." sobbed She. "And after all the attention I have paid to him this is the gratitude I receive. I am so hurt."
The figure pushed back the cloak, exposing her face. He placed a light kiss on her lips. She smiled sweetly at him and rubbed her hands over his head lightly. He smiled at her soft touch.
"Would you care to return the favor, my love?" he asked.
"How?"
"Marry me." He smiled wickedly. "Together, we will stop him from ever finding a Queen."
"Oh, Wickolus! Are you sure? Can we do it?" questioned Caracone.
"As sure as I am of anything! I would do anything for you." replied Wickolus. "Please, marry me and you will be Queen."
"Oh, yes!" she whispered, kissing the smoothness of his bald head. "Yes!"
Part 3
"Are you out of your mind?" exclaimed her brother.
Caracone jumped at his sudden outburst, but quickly recovered. "Bingflaetus, I am of a sound mind and am perfectly aware of what I am about to do."
Bingflaetus came to rest directly in front of her. "You know he wants to be Pharaoh!"
"Oh!" she grunted. "And what man in Londonis and Pemberlonia does not? I dare to venture that even you do."
"Yes, but we are not all second in line to the throne."
"But that is of no consequence, for Darconas will be Pharaoh, and Wickolus and I will be happy to serve him." stated Caracone, searching her sister's face for support. "Louisatra, help me!"
"I am afraid that I agree with our brother." admitted Louisatra. "I can not help but wonder at your sudden change of heart. Not more than three days ago, you were disappointed that Darconas did not propose and now you have settled for Wickolus??"
"I am appalled. I have always held a special place for him in my heart. I do confess to being disappointed, but it was not so drastic a change. Wickolus is a good man and I love him dearly."
Bingflaetus walks over the window and exhales slowly. "I do not trust him."
"Welcome to our kingdom, Caracone. I know it is not home, but I am sure you will come to love it as well as we do."
"I already do, Exalted One." bowed Caracone. "Thank you for making me so welcome."
Darconas walked up the pair to offer his congratulations. "Wickolus and Caracone ....married. I would have never suspected it. I offer you my best wishes for your upcoming life together. May you always be happy!"
"Thank you, my Prince. We are grateful to you and your family." smiled Wickolus.
The Pharaoh raised his staff high in the air. "Let the festivities begin." and with a heavy thud, the music started and crowd began to celebrate.
Darconas stood mystified, watching as Caracone and Wickolus made their way through the crowd of well wishers. Bingflaetus walked up and watched.
"I am at a loss for words." He apologized. "I fail to understand her."
"Do not take this wrong, my friend, but I know exactly what is happening." spoke Darconas, harshly. "It is obvious. Wickolus talked her into marrying him as to better increase his chances of obtaining the throne."
"I thought as much." sighed Bingflaetus. "What will happen now?"
"I still have six moons before my father steps down. I am going to be forced to find a wife."
"Does not any of Pharaoh's court appeal to you?" questioned Bingflaetus, waving his hand towards a group of ladies.
"You sound like my father." sneered Darconas.
Elizapatra and her sister, Janibium made their way through the crowded streets of Merytonic. It was rumored that the Prince was coming. Both girls rushed to help their father make his shop presentable.
"I have been worried. Where have you been?" exclaimed Benncules, relieved.
"We were hurrying, father, but the streets are crowded today." sighed Janibium. "Is it true? Is the Prince coming?"
"So says your mother, who I am sure has is on good authority." He remarked, smartly.
"Why would he be coming to Merytonic?" questioned Elizapatra.
"Word has it, again by way of your mother, he is looking for a wife." replied their father. "The Pharaoh is to step down. I have heard that his health is lacking."
"Surely he does not come here just for a wife?" remarked Elizapatra.
"Rumor again, is that he comes to meet with Luconium, High Priest of Jamses."
"Oh!" exclaimed her mother, entering the room. "It is true. He meets with Luconium on the morrow, and since we are such good friends with Luconium and his family, we have all been invited to meet the Prince and his companions."
Elizapatra and Janibium stare at each other in wonder. A sudden hush of the crowd outside, draws their attention. They rush to the doorway to see who is passing.
A large open chaise rolls slowly pass. Its occupants are only two young men. Neither one gives much attention to the crowd.
"Is that the Prince?" whispers Janibium.
"Yes, and his friend." answered their mother, rather loudly.
Darconas catches a word of their conversation as they pass. He looks out of the chaise in time to catch the eye of a beautiful young lady.
The chaise continues to roll on as he sits up straight so as to continue to see her. He breaks his glare long enough to try to get his friend's attention, but Bingflaetus has already noticed as well.
They make the turn around the corner. Darconas turned to his friend.
"Did you see that woman?" he blurts.
"Of course, I did."
Darconas leans back against the seat of the chaise. He exhales slowly. "She was so beautiful. She is surely sent from the Gods!"
Bingflaetus glares at his friend. "There were two women. Which one were you looking at?"
The warm night air brought Caracone out on to the verandah. She gazed at the night sky and dreamed of what it might be like to look at the stars from the palace. She closed her eyes tightly and swayed back and forth. Wickolus approached from behind and put his arms securely around her waist.
"Of what are you thinking, my love?" he whispered.
"Of our future. I so want to live in the palace." she sighed.
"You shall, I promise you." he replied. "It has almost been one moon, and the time will quickly pass."
"Yes, but Darconas conducts his search now, and we know not where he is. How will we know if he has chosen someone?" asked Caracone.
Wickolus turned Caracone around in his arms. "Do not doubt me, not now! I know where he is, he is in Merytonic. Do you think that I have not thought of that?"
"How do you know?" she questioned. "The Pharaoh is the only one in the palace who knows where he is."
"And only the Pharaoh does know." smiled Wickolus. "Let us say that I have a way of knowing every move the Prince makes."
Caracone caressed his cheek. "A spy? You have planted a spy in Darconas' camp?"
"You see, my dear, I want to be Pharaoh and I want you to be my Queen and I will go to any lengths to assure that."
"He still has five moons to find a wife. Suppose he finds one there?"
Wickolus laughed. "In Merytonic? There is nothing in Merytonic. Our Prince will not be so easily settled."
Luconium paced back and forth nervously, awaiting the arrival of the Prince. He fretfully wrung his hands and jumped at the sound of his wife's voice.
"You must relax." she stated. "You will be in no shape to see the Prince if you do not."
"How can I?" he stuttered. "When I do not know why he comes? What if I have done something wrong?"
"Calm yourself, my friend." said Benncules. "I am sure all is well."
"Certainly." replied Fanicus. "For if you had, I'm sure the Pharaoh has someone other than his son to take care of matters such as that."
Benncules rolled his eyes at his wife's ill-timed comment. Luconium stopped and looked at the assembled crowd, blinking his eyes several times. "I hope you are right."
At that moment, Charlitcus and her sister, Maritone entered the room. "Oh father." stammered Maritone. "Is the Prince here yet?"
"No, he is not, and I am so nervous. What if I have done something wrong? Do you think I have?"
Charliticus passed the nervous pair and joined her friends. "Greetings Elizapatra and Janibium. I am glad that you could join us. Have you," at this she leaned towards them and whispered. "caught a glimpse of the Prince?"
"We have," answered Janibium. "He passed in his chaise. We noticed that he has someone with him. Do you know who it is?"
"It is his friend, Bingflaetus." she smiled. "He came to us yesterday and let us know that the Prince was here and was well and he asked a rather interesting question."
"Which was?" replied Elizapatra
"He wanted to know who the local shopkeeper was."
"Why?" asked Elizapatra, half chuckling, "Does the Prince need a rug? Or perhaps a lantern?"
The young ladies giggled and were suddenly startled by the booming voice of the servant.
"Please arise and greet the Exalted One, Prince Darconas." All turned to see the Prince enter with Bingflaetus.
"My Sovereign!" groveled Fanicus, upon approaching him. "We are honored to have you in our small city."
"Arise madam. I am pleased to be here." he smiled.
Darconas quickly scanned the room and to his surprise, his eyes settled on a familiar object. He leaned towards Luconium and whispered. Luconium quickly obeyed and introduced everyone. He paid no special attention until Luconium reached the young women.
"My Prince, these two are my daughters, Charliticus and Maritone and their companions, Elizapatra and Janibium, Benncules' daughters."
They bowed to the Prince, and he spoke greetings to each one. As the evening passed on, all began to mill about but Darconas, who, when not being addressed by Fanicus, kept a watch on the young women. When a sufficient amount of time had passed, he arose and approached them.
"Excuse me," said he. They had not seen him coming and were startled. "Forgive me." he began again, addressing all. "I was noticing that you have not joined us this evening in conversation. Is there something that I am not aware of?"
Maritone stood frozen in fear and the others in awe. It was Charliticus who responded. "Oh no, gracious Prince!" she exclaimed. "We were allowing you time with our parents. My father has long awaited your arrival."
"As I have anticipated meeting him. I have heard much of Merytonic and all of it good, I might add."
"Thank you, Prince Darconas. My father will be pleased."
Maritone slowly and quietly slipped away, leaving only the three ladies, plus the Prince to converse. Bingflaetus soon joined their group.
"Darconas, I was wondering where you had gotten off to." exclaimed his friend. "I looked and suddenly you weren't there."
"I had become weary from sitting so much and saw the wonderful talk these young ladies were having and decided to join them." replied Darconas, looking at each one. "In fact, Bingflaetus and I were going to inquire as how we would go about receiving a tour of this wonderful city. I long to see the salt mines!"
Bingflaetus looked puzzled at his friend but quickly agreed. "Yes, we were just discussing it."
Charliticus quickly spoke up. "I will see to it now that my father arranges it for you. Would tomorrow be too soon?"
"Actually, that would be splendid." replied Darconas, watching her leave. He stepped forward and took a surprised young lady by the hand. "Would you do me the honor of escorting me on this tour?"
"Yes, Prince Darconas. I would be honored." she replied.
Part 4
The tour had lasted longer than it should have, due to Luconium's long winded speeches at every stop. The entourage had finally ended at the Salt Mines of Merytonic. Luconium then did burst into another long speech, causing a collective sigh to arise from the gathered few. Even his daughter, Charliticus, rolled her eyes at her father's revelations.
"Here, O Mighty Sovereign, lies the heart of Merytonic, the very reason for her existence." He said, sweeping his arms wide. "As you can see here," he pointed and Darconas leaned forward. "I have begun an expansion of the mines. I hope to have them producing by the middle of summer. The workers are happy, as usual, to be working so diligently for the Pharaoh and his son."
During Luconium's speech, a portly man approached. "This, sire, is the foreman of the mines, Willibium Collinicus."
"O`Great Lord of the Nile! Exalted Master of Pemberlonia! How long have I desired to meet you." He sweated and groveled. "How humbling it is to have you grace us, the lowly citizens of Merytonic. We are certainly not worthy of such attention, but are very grateful."
Darconas stifled a laugh and proceeded in a grand way. "Arise, humble servant and take thy leave and know that the Supreme Prince Darconas has smiled upon thee."
Bingflaetus tried not to laugh, but a small one escaped. He looked at Darconas who would not make eye contact with him for fear of doing the same. Darconas heard Luconium withdraw his breath to begin again. He decided that this was his chance to end the agony, so he motioned his guard, Dennicus, to intercede.
"High Priest, Luconium. Prince Darconas of Pemberlonia relates that he has thoroughly enjoyed the tour of this fair city, but regretfully has grown very fatigued. He desires that we journey back to the temple where he may rest."
Luconium gave in and halted his long declaration. He backed away, slightly embarrassed. The Prince made his way towards Luconium to console him that he was still in his good favor. After all reassurances, Luconium smiled and lead the way back to the chaise. Bingflaetus grinned at his partner and offered her his arm, as they watched the Prince pass.
"I think Darconas is taken with your sister." He conceded.
"As do I. She is very honored and flattered with the attention he is showing her."
Bingflaetus smiled. "And what woman would not be! He is tall, he is handsome, he is rich and," he sighed. "he is Prince of Pemberlonia and very soon to be Pharaoh."
Elizapatra glared at him. "I do not think that my sister is so shallow as to only like him because he is Prince."
Bingflaetus stopped. "Please do not take offense. I did not mean it in that way. I speak from my own standpoint. I must admit to being jealous of Darconas."
"Why?" she questioned.
"Well," he whispered. "and promise to say none of this to your sister!" Elizapatra nodded. "When I first gazed upon her after we entered the city, I knew. I have never in all of my life seen anyone like her. I knew that she was the one to make my life complete and did desire to get to know her better, but unfortunately, so did Darconas and now I do envy him."
"It is possible that she will not like him." she whispered, upon reaching the chaise.
Bingflaetus helped her in and whispered. "I do not hold much stock in possibilities!"
The chaise drove on and lead the relieved group back to the temple. Darconas and Bingflaetus made their way to their chamber.
"So, what do you think of her?" inquired Bingflaetus, flopping down on the lounge.
"From what I know, she is a sweet girl, very knowledgeable and, of course, it helps that she is so beautiful." He paused. "But, she is quite reserved, never speaking unless I question her."
"Perhaps, she is in awe, my Prince!" Bingflaetus bowed his head, mockingly.
Darconas laughed and flopped down beside his friend. "What would I do without you here to advise me?"
Bingflaetus could only smile. Any comment from him might betray his true feelings towards Janibium. Feelings that, were Darconas not interested, might not even be reciprocated by her.
Darconas spent the first full moon in the company of Luconium and the city of Merytonic. He could not believe it the time had so swiftly passed.
"So you say that the Prince has lately been in the company of a young lady of Merytonic?" questioned Wickolus.
Dennicus nodded. "Yes and a lovely one at that!"
Caracone stomped around the room. "I thought you said that there was nothing in Merytonic?"
"Well, obviously it has been sometime since I have been there. But it can be nothing more than a tradeswoman or a servant, for no royalty resides in that city."
"Does it appear to be serious?" asked Wickolus
"They have been together almost every day, however only in the company of her father or Bingflaetus, but Darconas seems to be smitten with her. She is as beautiful as one sent from the Gods!"
"Enough about her beauty!" exclaimed Caracone.
Wickolus stood up and comforted his wife. "Now, Now, dear. Just because he is seen with one does not mean he is to marry her. We still have time."
Wickolus turns to Dennicus. "Does he intend to return to Pemberlonia soon?"
"Yes, after 14 nights." replied Dennicus. "Do you want me to take care of her?"
"No. I don't think that will be necessary." smiled Wickolus. "My wife and I have a plan. Return now to Merytonic before Darconas becomes suspicious."
Part 5
"And what do we have planned?" asked Caracone, watching Dennicus disappear into the night.
Wickolus nervously rubbed both hands across the top of his head, "I, uh...I do not know...yet."
Caracone stomped over in front of him and began. "But you said..."
"I was only trying to divert his attention. Dennicus can be dangerous if left to his own ideas." admitted Wickolus, pacing to and fro.
"How do you know?" she asked.
"Do you think I just chose him at random?" Wickolus stopped and glared. "Oh no, my dear, just anyone would not do. I had to find someone who I could trust and who would be afraid to cross me and Dennicus has a past, one that he does not want revealed."
"So you are threatening him?" she ventured.
"Threatening is not the word I would use. Lets just say that we are in agreement about certain things." replied Wickolus. "He brings me information for which he is rewarded. I will take care of him as long as he takes care of me."
"The more you speak of him the less I like him." she admitted.
"He can be a good friend." He replied, walking out onto the verandah. "But also a ferocious enemy. Now, no more questions about Dennicus."
'But.." Caracone followed.
Wickolus turned to her and held her by the shoulders. "Now do not press me further. Let me think!"
"Let you think? Ha!" exclaimed Caracone, wide eyed. "Look where your thinking has got us! Nowhere!"
Wickolus looked at his wife with fire in his eyes. "Caracone, leave me be. I am in no humor."
Dennicus slipped quietly down the corridor. He walked, nervously looking about to see if he was being followed. He glanced back once more when he bumped into someone.
"Dennicus! How odd that we should meet at this hour!" Charliticus smiled, standing back.
"Yes." he stammered, thrown off guard.
"Why are you about? Could you not sleep as well?" she offered.
"Uh...right!" he answered, grasping at the offered reply. "I could not sleep and decided to make sure that the guards were still attending the Prince's chariot. But perhaps now," he then yawned for effect, "I shall be able to get some sleep. If you will excuse me?"
"Of course." she smiled. "Rest well."
Charliticus watched Dennicus continue on down the corridor. "An odd man, very odd." she thought to herself. She then turned to walk away when her foot clicked against something. She bent down to pick it up.
The next morning brought about the usual hurried pace to Luconium's household. Each servant made preparations for the Prince. A large breakfast was prepared and all were summoned to the table. Slowly everyone made their way. Maritone as usual, too in awe of the Prince, grabbed a seat at the far end of the table.
"My Prince! I hope you rested well." smiled Luconium, between bites.
"I did." he replied. "Exceptionally well."
Bingflaetus suddenly piped up. "I do not believe I have slept so soundly since I was a child. Probably due to the many activities of yesterday."
Charliticus laughed. "Perhaps it had the opposite affect on me, for I could not sleep."
"How strange. I was exhausted and knew of nothing until this morning." replied the Prince.
Charliticus smiled and sipped her drink. "I believe I was not the only one who could not for I met Dennicus in the early hours of this morning."
Darconas and Bingflaetus looked at each other, puzzled.
Charliticus continued. "He explained that he had been to see about your chariot, Prince. I think him to be a good servant to you."
"Oh, yes." replied Darconas. "He is. Though it is strange that he himself did not mention his lack of sleep. In fact, he was up and about before Bingflaetus and myself."
Charliticus, finished with her meal, arose. "He may not need as much sleep as we."
Darconas nodded and shot a glare towards Bingflaetus. Charliticus walked over to the side of Bingflaetus.
"Bingflaetus, could you see that Dennicus gets this back. He must have dropped it when we met. I found it last night but was unable to get his attention to return it to him."
Bingflaetus held out his hand and she dropped a shiny gold coin. He looked at it and grimaced. Darconas noticed the look but continued on with his meal. Afterwards, He and Bingflaetus headed towards their chamber.
"Bingflaetus, what did Charliticus give you?"
Bingflaetus shrugged. "It was just a coin."
"Yes, but I saw the way you reacted. Let me see it." He replied, holding out his hand.
"Its nothing, Darconas, really!" he smiled.
"Let me determine that."
Bingflateus reluctantly reached in his pocket and gave the coin to Darconas. The Prince turned the coin over and over in his hand. He stopped and faced his friend.
"This coin has Wickolus' mark on it and he only gives it his friends."
Part 6
Early the next morning, Darconas found his way out onto the verandah. He thought back to the day he had left the palace. His own man had suddenly taken ill and Dennicus had been sent to take his place.
Darconas shrugged his shoulders. He had not even questioned it. He had allowed a man he had never seen or knew anything about to abide in his camp. How foolish of him! Of course, Wickolus would want to keep an eye on him. He let his guard down and now he would pay for it.
"Darconas?" Questioned Bingflaetus.
"Yes?" He answered, abruptly.
"What is it?" He asked. "What are you doing out here at such an early hour?"
"I am trying to rationalize how I could have let this happen. Why did I not suspect him?" Exclaimed Darconas, facing his friend. "Bingflaetus, he planted a spy right under my nose. My father would not have so easily been fooled. I am not fit to be Pharaoh!"
"Darconas, do not blame yourself. At least, now we know what you are up against." Said Bingflaetus.
"And what am I up against?" Sighed Darconas. "A married man, second in line to the throne. The only thing left now is for Caracone to become with child."
Bingflaetus walked determinedly up to the edge of the balcony. "Darconas, you are giving up before you even begin. You still have more than four moons. Your time by no means is up. You are the rightful Pharaoh. No one in the kingdom wants to serve Wickolus."
"They may not have a choice. I am no closer to choosing a wife than when I started."
Bingflaetus felt for his friend and decided to change the subject. "Then, what shall we do with Dennicus?"
"Send him back to his master." Sighed Darconas, propping up on the railing.
Bingflaetus grabbed his cloak and headed towards the door. Suddenly Darconas whirled around.
"No...wait!" He called out. Darconas approached him. "Does Dennicus know we are wise to him?"
"No, I have said nothing," answered Bingflaetus.
Darconas smiled. "I have an idea."
"Elizapatra, you sure that the Prince has sent for you and not for me?" Cried Janibium, following after her sister.
"Janibium, his servant waits." She points. "Surely I did not misunderstand so badly. You were in the room. What did he say?"
Janibium stops and looks at the floor. "That the Prince desired your presence."
"Now, do not worry so. I am sure the Prince's favor still lies with you. He probably wants to inquire to after something or the other. I have no idea why he would call for me." And with that, she headed towards the door.
"But Elizapatra..." followed her sister.
"Janibium!" Exclaimed Elizapatra, holding her sister by the shoulders. "Stay here. I will return shortly."
Elizapatra left with the servant and walked towards the temple. Once inside, she was met by Bingflaetus.
"Come, Elizapatra. The Prince awaits."
Darconas watched as Elizapatra trotted across the tiled floor. He smiled to himself as he watched her. He had to admit her beauty, something he had not noticed before today. Her piercing eyes called to him.
"My Prince. I came as quickly as I could." Said she, breathlessly.
"And for that, I thank you." He said, motioning her to sit at his side. "I suppose you are wondering why I called in such haste."
"Yes, much as my sister does." Grinned Elizapatra, sitting down beside him.
"Let me try to explain how we have arrived at this point." Started Darconas.
He told how his father would be stepping down and that he, in five moons time, would be made Pharaoh. He explained the law concerning the marriage of a ruling Pharaoh and thus his search for a queen. Then he told of Wickolus and the consequences he would face were he not married. He told her of their discovery of the coin and of Dennicus' betrayal.
Elizapatra listened closely, though she could hardly concentrate. She had to admit that the Prince was extremely handsome and had no trouble holding her attention. His looks and gentle way were very appealing to her. She watched his movements and his facial gestures as he explained how much he valued his kingdom and its people. Suddenly she remembered her sister. She pushed the image of the Prince from her mind and forced herself to listen.
He then began to lay out his plan. "This is where I desire your assistance."
"Anything, my Lord," she smiled.
"Well," he began again. "Neither Bingflaetus or myself know anything about Dennicus. We are almost certain that he is a criminal for his master is Wickolus and he has been known to befriend and use many of his type."
Elizapatra leaned back in her chair. "If you are certain he is a criminal, then why have him around? Why not have him arrested?"
Bingflaetus stood up and drank his wine. "Because we need him."
Part 7
The figure watched from the shadows as the sisters said their good-byes. As much as could be heard, it listened, taking in all. It peered out of the shadows more to complete the view of the scene, but quickly withdrew at the sight of the Prince.
"Elizapatra, are you sure that this is necessary?" Asked Janibium.
Elizapatra hugged her sister tightly and helped her into the chariot. "I would not put you through this if I did not. Now, go with Bingflaetus to Cheapsydia and stay with Aunt and Uncle. We will call for you when it is safe."
"What about Mother and Father? What were they told?" She inquired.
"They were told that Aunt and Uncle needed your assistance and that Bingflaetus was taking you because he had planned to go to Cheapsydia this afternoon anyway." She grinned at her sister. "Of course, now Mother wonders if you still have the Prince's favor for him to let you leave with his friend. I soothed Mother and reassured her that all was well."
"I see." Replied Janibium, leaning towards her sister. "But you know, Dennicus has never approached me wrongly. Why should I be afraid of him?" She whispered.
Darconas overheard their conversation. "Because he has no conscience. Someone else directs his steps. Someone that will do anything to be Pharaoh. Dennicus is only waiting for word."
Janibium smiled nervously at the Prince. He turned from her at the sound of Bingflaetus approaching.
"My Prince." Exclaimed Bingflaetus clasping Darconas' hand. "I will send word when we reach Cheapsydia."
"Be careful, my friend." Replied Darconas.
Bingflaetus climbed into the chariot. "I will and you likewise."
He snapped the reins across the horses back and they were off. Both stood and watched until they disappeared from sight.
"Now, Prince Darconas. How do we begin?" Asked Elizapatra, walking back towards the temple.
"First, we start with you calling me Darconas." He smiled. "It is not necessary for you to call me always by my title."
"As you wish." She smiled in return.
The figure in the shadows ran up to the roof of the temple. There a lantern waited. It was lit and waved vigorously back and forth, signaling its companion.
"Have you thought of anything yet?" Called out Caracone.
Her husband, returning from the temple, looked puzzled at her outburst. "Must you bellow at me?"
She followed him into his chamber. "I am sorry, my love. I am just anxious to know what we are to do next."
"Well, rest assured that everything is taken care of." He replied, smugly.
Caracone looked at her husband eagerly. "Then what am I to do?"
"You are to do nothing." He smiled, slipping off his cloak.
"Nothing?" She exclaimed. "I will not have it. I insisted on being involved. I must know what you are doing."
"Listen, Caracone." Started Wickolus, sitting his wife down on the bed. "We can not be that involved. If something happens to Darconas or one of his companions, our hands must appear to be clean. Therefore we must rely on the workings of others in this matter."
She placed her thin arms around his neck and nuzzled close to him. "Please tell me! What have you done?"
"I will only tell you this," he whispered, roughly. "Be at ease! I am always one step ahead of Darconas."
The mesh netting around the bed slowly closed together, leaving the two inside to their own designs.
"I came as quickly as I could." She said breathlessly. Quickly she surveyed the situation. "Are you sure they are not hurt?"
"I am positive. I did not hit them that hard." He smiled.
"What are we supposed to do now?" She questioned.
"Wait for word! Dennicus will let us know. Meanwhile, they will be secure here."
He reached down and checked the ropes around their hands and ankles. When he was confident that there was no chance of escape, he turned and led his companion out of the darkened shaft.
"Ooh!" She exclaimed, upon exiting to the outside. "I just hate it in there. It's so dark and I'm afraid that I'll get lost and you never know what might be crawling around."
"I will protect you, my dear. I know all the ins and outs of these mines. There is no way that I will get lost." He smirked, propping his hand against the wall of the mine. "You know, I will be glad when this is all over. As soon as Wickolus is Pharaoh and I take the temple of Merytonic, everything will be perfect and we can be wed. If, of course, you agree to be my wife and High Priestess of the temple?"
She lunged forward and pinned his rotund body as against the wall of the mine. She squealed in delight. "Of course, you wonderful man. I have waited so long for this moment."
She stepped back and placed her hands on her hips. "High Priestess, Charliticus Collinicus! I love it!"
Part 8
She walked determinedly towards Darconas. "I cannot understand it. I can't find Dennicus anywhere."
He joined her, walking towards the main hall. "Did you go to the stables?"
"Yes, he is no where to be found." she sighed.
"Strange.." he trailed off. He stopped abruptly and pushed Elizapatra back against the wall. She could hear voices coming from beyond him.
"Who is it?" she whispered.
He turned to her and gave a quick whisper. "Its Luconium and Dennicus!"
"What are they saying?"
"I cannot tell. They have their backs to me."
Elizapatra stretched her neck to see. "Surely Luconium is not one of them?" she stated, watching Dennicus walk away.
"Let us see!" Darconas said. He took her hand and pulled her away from the wall. They started toward Luconium.
Bingflaetus could hear haggarded breathing in the darkness. He was back to back with someone and he was not sure who it was. He held his breath as the body shifted.
"Be you friend or foe?" he ventured, pushing with his back against the figure.
"Bingflaetus?" the voice said weakly.
"Janibium? Is that you?" He moved quickly, trying to untie himself. She responded in like movements.
"Yes. I have been pondering who I was in this forbidden place with." she sighed. "Do you know where we are?"
He stopped for a moment and defeatedly shrugged his shoulders. "No, I do not. I don't even know how we got here. Do you?"
"I have been trying but the last thing I can remember is, seeing someone or thing rush into the chariot from behind the city wall as we passed. They must've knocked us unconscious." replied Janibium, relaxing against Bingflaetus' back.
"I would say so, from the way my head hurts." sighed Bingflaetus, struggling with the ropes. He could not see and was beginning to grow frustrated. "I am having no luck at all with these ropes. Are yours loosening any?"
Janibium begin to weep. "No, they're not."
Bingflaetus halted. "Janibium, you must control yourself. If we are to escape I need to have your cooperation. You must help me with these ropes."
"Yes, I'm sorry...I am trying." she snubbed. "Its just that I'm frightened. I can't stand it in here much longer!"
"I long to be away from this place as well. I keep feeling something crawling over my feet." He flinched, still suffering with the ropes.
She begin to twist back and forth in anger. "Why won't they break? I have pulled and struggled until my hands ache and still they hold fast."
"I think we are working against each other. Hold still and let me try." he replied.
Janibium could feel Bingflaetus' fingers work at the twine that held her hands together. She blushed at such a familar touch. He pulled and tugged at the knots and until finally Janibium was free. Quickly, she turned around and untied Bingflaetus' hands. Slowly they both got to their feet.
Bingflaetus smiled at Janibium. "Aren't you a lovely sight with your dirty face and all!"
Janibium returned his smile. "The Gods have not favored you either!" She pointed to his torn cloak.
He looked down and grinned. They stood and watched each other in silence. Janibium saw the smile fade from his face.
Bingflaetus' eyes rapidly went from side to side and he tried to rationalize what was going on. Suddenly it hit him. They could see each other. There was a light coming from somewhere, but where? Wherever it was coming from, it was getting closer and then he heard voices. He looked at Janibium, who stared in wonder.
"Come, lets go!" He reached and pulled at her. She only lunged forward for her feet were still tied together. He looked down and his were in the same condition. He searched her face for assistance.
"Sit back down!" she gasped. "Pretend you are still asleep!"
They sat back down in haste. Bingflaetus loosened his cloak to cover their hands. He could only hope they would not check. He then closed his eyes. Soon the figures were upon them.
"I thought you said that you did not hit them hard!" whispered Charliticus, not too quietly.
"I didn't! I do not understand." he replied, holding his lantern closer.
Charliticus sat her lantern down and crossed her arms across her chest. "Then why are they not moving? Are they dead?"
"I do not think so." replied Willibium, stretching forward for a closer look. "I'll check."
Bingflaetus and Janibium each held their breath for fear of discovery.
"No!" cried Charliticus, pulling at his cloak.
Willibium jumped at her outburst. "Why not?"
"Because one should not handle the dead! We will come back tomorrow and if they are not moved by then, we will call Dennicus." Charliticus grabbed Willibium by the arm and pulled him away. "Come! I don't want to be here if death is in the air!"
"At once, my love!" The chubby little man obediently followed his intended out of the cavern.
Bingflaetus opened his eyes slowly and then raised up his head. "You can open your eyes. They are gone."
"That was Charliticus, was it not?" she asked.
"Yes." he replied, softly. Janibium began to cry again.
"Well, from what I can gather, Luconium is not aware of any plot against the kingdom." sighed Darconas.
"Yes, he is only guilty of talking excessively!" laughed Elizapatra.
Darconas could not help but laugh along with her. Unaware, they started down the steps of the temple, both preoccupied with their own conversation.
Out of the corner of his eye, Darconas caught a glimpse of a chariot. He turned and looked, then froze at the sight he saw.
"Darconas! My son!"
Part 9
"Father!" Darconas exclaimed, approaching him. "What a pleasant surprise!"
The Pharaoh clasped his son's hand tightly and hugged him. "It is indeed! I have missed you."
Elizapatra stood on the steps and watched the reunion. She could see the resemblance between father and son. The Pharaoh had a commanding appearance that Darconas had not yet acquired. Elizapatra started backing away when her movement caught the Pharaoh's eye. He looked and motioned for her to join them.
He took her by the hand and looked at his son. "And who is this lovely young lady that had my son so enthralled?"
"Father," smiled Darconas. "This is Elizapatra."
"I see." he smiled at her. "So, you are my son's declared one!"
Elizapatra felt a slight shiver race up her spine. She now realized that Darconas intended to marry her sister. She could not help but blush.
"Father!" cried Darconas, embarrassed. "Elizapatra is Janibium's sister. She is who I sent word of."
"Oh, now I remember." He replied, releasing her hand. "Then, where is Janibium?"
Darconas hesitated and looked at Elizapatra. "I, uh..."
The Pharaoh stared at him. "Do you not know where your own intended is?"
Elizapatra looked away. Her eyes darted to the ground and then back to Darconas, who stood before her in like condition.
"Well, you see, Father..."
"Darconas, you are stalling. I demand to meet her. I command that you introduce me to she who might be my future daughter and Queen of Pemberlonia!"
"Father, I never said..."
"Darconas, come!" interrupted the Pharaoh.
The Pharaoh began to ascend the steps and Darconas followed. Elizapatra, unsure if she were to go or not, took a step, only to be cut off the guards. Darconas looked back at her and continued on. Elizapatra, alone on the steps, turned toward home.
"What do you mean they are gone?" shouted Wickolus
"Well, master, we thought them dead and decided to wait one more day to be sure for they were not moving. I returned alone to check on their condition and they were gone." stuttered Willibium.
"Who is we?" sneered Wickolus.
"Charliticus. She has been assisting me and has even agreed to be my wife." He smiled weakly.
"Charliticus? Luconium's daughter?" cried Caracone. "I can not believe you to be so foolish! How could you possible trust her?"
Wickolus walked about the room, methodically rubbing his head. Willibium watched his every movement. Wickolus was his master but he did not trust him. In fact, he was afraid of him.
Caracone slumped down in a large chair and placed her head in her hands. "I can not believe that it has come to this." She whispered through her hands.
Wickolus walked over to the window and stared out. "And are you sure they are no where to be found?"
"Yes, but here is the good news!" Willibium started.
"Oh?" Caracone exclaimed mockingly. "There is good news in this?"
"Yes," Willibium walked toward Caracone. "Only I know the way out of the mine. If they have escaped, they are hopelessly lost."
"What about Charliticus?" questioned Wickolus. "Could she not lead them out?"
Willibium laughed loudly. "Surely, you tease! For my Charliticus is as meek and trusting as the most humbled servant. She lives to please me."
Caracone found herself suddenly sick to her stomach. Surely Charliticus was a stronger woman than she gave her credit.
"Now Darconas, tell me of Janibium!" exclaimed the Pharaoh, upon reach the great hall.
"Father, trust me. Everything is well." soothed Darconas. "Janibium has only went to visit family."
"Does not her family live here?"
"Oh, yes," stuttered Darconas, "But she has went to visit an aunt and uncle."
"And where do they reside? Londonis?" he replied, sitting down at the table.
"No, they live in Cheapsydia." replied Darconas, in a low voice.
"Cheapsydia? What does her uncle do?"
Darconas pulled out a chair and motioned to his father for permission to sit and he nodded his assent. "Her uncle is a judge there."
He leaned back in the chair. "Very well. When will she be home?"
"I am not sure. She did not say." He sighed.
The Pharaoh's looked harshly at his son. "You mean, she left and did not tell you, Prince of Pemberlonia, when she would return? Have you not declared for her?"
"No, father, I have not." He answered. "When I sent you word, I was very taken with her, but now I am not certain that I want to declare her!"
"You know the longer you wait, the stronger Wickolus gets. His power and allegiance grows every day." stated his father. "You are now well in the third moon. If the line is to carry on, you must choose Janibium or if it be not her, then someone."
"I make this promise to you, Father, I will have a bride at the sixth moon!" he vowed.
The Pharaoh rose and hugged his son. "Now, let us find Luconium."
Darconas loved his father and disliked lying to him, but he would not settle for just anyone. He could only hope to be able to keep his promise.
"Wait!" cried Bingflaetus. "I think I can see daylight!"
"Oh! Can it be so?" exclaimed Janibium.
The light grew in intensity and Bingflaetus began to hurry, followed closely by Janibium. They rush out, the light temporarily blinding. Bingflaetus led Janibium over the shade of a large tree, situated in the center of the garden.
"Where do you think we are?" she asked.
"I do not know other than in someone's garden." He replied.
"How long do you think we were in there?"
"Best I can guess, perhaps three days or maybe four." He stated, his vision beginning to clear.
A voice suddenly spoke. "Four days!"
"What?" Bingflaetus whirled around.
"You were in the mine four days." It stated, again.
"Who is there? Show yourself!"
Part 10
"I said, reveal yourself!" exclaimed Bingflaetus, shielding Janibium. But still no reply came.
He again tried. "By authority of the Pharaoh of Pemberlonia, I command that you show yourself or let us depart in peace."
"What is the Pharaoh to me?" said the voice from the shadows. "His rule is nonexistent here."
Bingflaetus looked in disbelief at Janibium, then turned back. "How can you dare say such thing? He is ruler over all of Pemberlonia and her lands!"
A commanding figure emerged from the shadows and walked towards the tree where Bingflaetus and Janibium stood. "Bingflaetus, this is not Pemberlonia."
"How do you know me?" asked Bingflaetus, puzzled.
"I know many things. Such as, you are great friends with Prince Darconas and this young lady is the Prince's declared one!"
"He has not declared me!" spouted Janibium, without thinking.
Bingflaetus stopped and stared at her, then whispered. "He has not?"
"No..." she whispered and then directed her attention back to the stranger. "You have the advantage, you know much of us. I now demand that you tell us who you are!"
"You are very forward, but I shall honor your request." She sneered. "I am Catherinicus, Queen of Bourgh and your journey has ended in my garden."
"We are a long way from home." He whispered to Janibium. He stepped forward. "Forgive us for trespassing, O mighty Queen. We would be indebted to you, if you could lend us one of your servants to show us the way home!"
"I am afraid that it is not that easy." She reached a bench under the tree and sat down. "I was told that you would not find your way out and now your appearance puts a new turn on my situation."
"What are you saying?" asked Bingflaetus. "You intentionally meant for us to ..." He trailed off. "You meant for us to die in the mine!"
"And easy end to a difficult problem." she smiled. "Now, I shall have to think of some other way. Some quiet way..."
Bingflaetus jumped at the movement behind him. Guards soon had them surrounded.
Catherinicus raised her hand. "Take them away. I need time to think."
Bingflaetus instinctively grabbed Janibium's hand as they were led away. He looked back once more. The queen had not moved and held her hands still on her lap. He grew angry.
"Do not dismiss us so quickly. We are stronger than you think. We found our way out of the mines, didn't we?" he cried, as he disappeared into the palace.
"Yes, mother, you wished to see me?"
"I did, my daughter. I have just received some good news that I think you will be pleased to hear." smiled the Queen.
The frail Princess walked forward, her handmaiden by her side. She sat down softly on the divan beside her mother.
"I have just heard," continued the Queen. "that Prince Darconas has not declared the shopkeeper's daughter, so that means he is still conducting his search for a Queen."
"Mother," replied Princess Annidite, "How can you be certain? I have never thought you to give in to idle gossip."
"Gossip it is not, for I have said it and you should believe it." She replied, harshly. So much so, that the Princess was startled upon the outburst. "The Gods have declared your union to be and nothing shall stand in the way."
"But Mother, " interrupted the Princess, "you know that I love ...."
The Queen quickly rose from the divan. "No! You shall marry Prince Darconas and unite the two kingdoms. Once you are married, then I shall marry his father, sealing the union of our families, never to fall apart! Then Pemberlonia shall kneel before me, their Queen, and Bourgh shall overtake Pemberlonia and grow into a strong and mighty force!"
The Princess began to cry. "I can not do this. I do not love him!"
"Now, now, my dear." soothed her mother, stroking Annidite's hair. "It will only be for a short while. When we have accomplished our goal, we shall rid ourselves of those that are in our way!"
"Then shall I have him?" she asked eagerly.
"Of course. If you still desire him and I have not had to kill him, you may take him as your husband." Catherinicus smiled, wickedly.
Elizapatra ran quickly down the corridor, leading to the great hall. She searched the room, but he was not there. The only place left was the rooftop. She ran and there she located the Prince and his father.
The Prince greeted her and noticed her worried look. "What is wrong?"
She looked beyond him at his father, who was approaching. "I, uh, "
Darconas looked back and watched the Pharaoh come to rest beside him. "Tell us what is wrong?"
Her eyes darted back and forth between them both. Darconas gave her a reassuring smile.
"All is well. Tell us!"
Elizapatra swallowed hard. "A messenger just came to our house. Bingflaetus and Janibium never arrived in Cheapsydia."
