Letter 1 From Ms. Dashwood to Ms. Berstine

    My dear Augusta,

How are you feeling? I hope your cold is better. You were quite ill when I left with Mr. and Mrs. Brown to Bath.

Our journey was quite uneventful. On the way we made an acquaintance a Ms. Davis and her chaperon and companion Mrs. Ryder. Ms. Davis is tall and fair and with 600 pounds. Mrs. Ryder said nothing and slept the whole way to Bath. When we arrived we promised to meet again in the pump room. In our hotel we were quite exhausted and slept heavily.

In the morning we ate breakfast quickly, and went to our carriage. When we went inside the pump room there was Ms. Davis. We sat down and began talking. She had come from some district north of us.(You must forgive my lack of geography, I never excelled in that subject.) She insisted on me calling her Sara, and I insisted on her calling me Elinor. We were doing fine, when Mrs. Ryder came down with a head ache so she must leave. Sara was about to go with her and our day ruined, then we asked 'could she spare Ms. Davis for the day with us?' And she agreed.

We drove though Bath and came to our hotel for tea and she exclaimed.

    "Goodness this is my hotel!"

"Why this is our hotel too!" I said.

So we laughed and had tea and checked on Mrs. Ryder and she actually smiled at our story.

    Well I must go,

    Adieu,

    Elinor.
