    Chapter 13 (cont.)

Elizabeth touched her lips and remembered how William's skin felt against them. It had been two weeks since they last saw each other, and it was the last time she had felt his lips on hers. She still could not believe that she had almost kissed him, in the hall, outside of her room. He must think I'm throwing myself at him. Well, at least I didn't make that mistake. She settled deeper into the folds of the sheets. Although she did save herself from making a terrible mistake, a part of her wished she had made that mistake. The kiss on the cheek only left her wanting.

A soft knock came from the door and Elizabeth sat up.

    "Yes?"

"Ms. Bennet, I brought you some breakfast."

Elizabeth did not recognize the female voice. "Please, come in."

The door was opened and a lady who looked a bit older than her mother walked in with a tray of food.

"Where would you like me to put this?"

Elizabeth blinked several times at the lady.

"Why don't I just put it next to you." The lady walked towards Elizabeth's bed. She pulled her legs up and the woman set the tray down at the foot of the bed. "Is there anything else you need?"

Elizabeth looked at the tray. A slow smile spread across her lips. Bagel with butter, juice, and some fruit were on it. A single daisy in a petite vase accented the breakfast tray. She looked up at the lady. "Who. . ."

"Mr. Darcy sent it up for you."

    Elizabeth's eyebrows jumped. "Mr. Darcy?"

The lady studied Elizabeth, who looked at the breakfast, but did not touch it.

    "It was Mr. William Darcy."

Elizabeth smiled, somewhat relieved. "Oh." She picked up the glass of orange juice. "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name."

"I'm Mrs. Reynolds, the housekeeper." She walked towards the curtains. "Would you mind if I opened these for you?"

"No, not at all." She took a bite of her bagel. "How's your sister?"

Mrs. Reynolds looked at Elizabeth for a moment. "Oh . . . it's a slow recovery, but she'll be alright."

She took another sip of her orange juice. "My Aunt Phillips had a broken hip two years ago. She was in bed for weeks. She's still going to physical therapy."

Mrs. Reynolds wore a bemused expression. She watched Elizabeth eat her bagel and fruit.

After a few moments, Elizabeth realized that she was being watched. She saw the expression on Mrs. Reynolds' face. "I'm sorry if I said something wrong. I know it's none of my business, but Anne had mentioned it."

Mrs. Reynolds took a step towards her. "Oh, it's quite alright. It's just that-" She caught herself, then started again. "It was very thoughtful of you to ask."

Elizabeth smiled. It was quiet for a moment before Elizabeth asked, "Has everyone had breakfast already?"

"Yes." Mrs. Reynolds walked over to another set of curtains.

"Why wasn't I called down with everyone else?"

One of the corners of Mrs. Reynolds' mouth turned up. "William said you weren't to be disturbed before ten o'clock."

Elizabeth sat up and her eyes were wide. "You mean I'm the only one who has been asleep all this time?"

    Mrs. Reynolds nodded.

"Where's everyone now?" Elizabeth gulped down her orange juice and then stuffed the last of her bagel in her mouth.

"William, Charles, and Richard are out by the pond throwing the football around. Georgiana, Anne, and your sister are getting ready to take a walk around the grounds." Mrs. Reynolds opened the French doors.

Elizabeth got out of bed. "I'd love to tour the grounds." She bent down to pick up the tray.

"Oh, I'll take it. Leave it where it is." Mrs. Reynolds checked the bathroom. "Will you be needing more towels?"

"No." Elizabeth walked over to her luggage. "Would it be too much trouble if you could let the other ladies know that I want to join them on their walk?"

"It'll be no trouble at all." Mrs. Reynolds retrieved the tray and began walking towards the door.

    "Oh, Mrs. Reynolds."

    She turned around.

"Thank you for breakfast." She thought a moment. "And the flannel sheets."

Mrs. Reynolds smiled. "I thought it was strange when William asked for them, but I suppose he knows what's best." She winked before turning away and walking out the room.

Elizabeth blinked several times. OK. Just get dressed, go downstairs, and take that walk. That'll clear things up. Elizabeth could endure the flannel sheets, the bagel and butter, the daisies, and even getting to sleep in later than everyone else. What she could not, would not allow herself to do was hope. William had been thoughtful and attentive, but he had not done the one thing that would clear her doubts. Instead of hoping for that one thing, she had decided not to expect it.

Richard held the football in his hand. "Charles, go long!"

Charles ran near the pond. William played defense, but not very well at all. Charles had caught Richard's pass with great ease.

Richard yelled across the lawn, "You could at least pretend you're going to get the ball from Charles."

    William waved. "Sorry."

Richard jogged over to William and Charles. "Will, is everything alright? You usually put up more of a fight whenever we play."

"I'm fine." He rubbed his wrist. "Uh. . . does anyone know what time it is?"

Charles looked down at his watch. "It's past ten."

William looked over at the house.

Richard's eyebrow arched. "Are we keeping you from something?"

William's head snapped back. "What? Uh. . . no."

Richard gave him a knowing smile. "Right."

"C'mon, let's get back to the game." Charles gave Richard a pointed look.

Richard shrugged and then jogged back to his place.

"I'm so glad you could join us." Georgiana led the way out the door.

"I'm sorry you all had to wait." In a more quiet tone, she said, "I overslept."

    Jane laughed. "Overslept?"

Elizabeth glared at her. "Yes. Overslept."

    "Oh, I thought William said-"

Anne cut off Georgiana. "You didn't sleep well?"

"I did. I just. . ." Elizabeth looked at Anne then at Georgiana. "I wasn't expecting to get to sleep in."

Anne smiled. "It's alright. You didn't miss anything."

Elizabeth looked at Anne, not really believing her. Elizabeth's attention was soon captured by the spectacular view from the veranda. "This is beautiful."

    Georgiana and Anne exchanged looks.

Jane shook her head. "Will you show us around, Georgiana?"

"Of course." Georgiana led them off the veranda and through the English style garden.

It had been a half an hour since Richard took over as quarterback. He had thrown the ball ten times and Charles had caught eight of them. Charles was not usually so successful, but the defense this morning was not at its best.

"Will, why don't you switch with Charles. Give him a break from catching." Richard smirked.

    He waved at Richard. "Alright."

Richard sent the ball spiraling through the air. William followed the ball, reached out, and caught it.

"Excellent!" Richard caught William's return throw.

Again, the ball shot out of Richard's hand, but this time it veered towards the left. William followed the ball, but it jumped in his hands before he got a firm hold on it.

"Nice save." Richard launched the ball again. It was another beautiful spiral, making a perfect arc. It veered further left than the last throw and when Richard saw where it was going, he ran towards William and Charles.

    "Wait! Stop!"

Charles heard Richard. He stopped to look at him, but William continued running after the ball. When Charles realized what was happening, it was too late. William flew through the air, then dove to catch the ball.

    Into the pond.

"Will! Are you alright?" Charles ran to the edge of the pond.

Richard fought hard not to laugh.

William jumped up from the water and shook his head, his hair spraying droplets of water.

"I'm sorry." Richard erupted into laughter.

William blinked several times then looked at Richard. "Some how I doubt that." He waded out of the pond, his sneakers sloshing with each step.

Richard and Charles hesitated before they followed him. Then Richard spoke up. "I am. I didn't realize the ball was heading in that direction until it was too late."

William spun around and glared at his cousin. "Right." Then he looked at Charles. "Were you in on it too?"

Charles shook his head. "No." He hesitated before he said, "Didn't you hear Richard?"

It took a moment for William to admit, "No." Then he stormed off.

Richard and Charles ran after him again. They followed him in silence for some time.

    "I suppose I've been a bit preoccupied."

Richard snorted, but Charles shot him a look. "It's alright."

    "Do you think she's awake?"

William's unexpected stop caused Richard to run into him. William turned around. "Sorry."

Richard wiped some of the dampness off his arm. He shrugged. "It could've been worse."

William rolled his eyes and continued walking.

"So is she?" Richard had a sly smile on his face which William missed.

"Uhm. . . I don't know." William quickened his pace.

    "I just thought. . ."

    "Thought what?"

"Well, there's only one thing that could drive you to this kind of distraction."

Before William could answer, the source of that distraction, along with Georgiana, Anne, and Jane appeared before them.

Anne and Georgiana sounded off in unison. "Will?"

Elizabeth and Jane stood in back of them. One of them unable to take her eyes off the man in the wet shirt.

"Uh. . . Good morning." William glanced at Elizabeth.

"What happened?" Georgiana looked at her brother with concern.

William rubbed his neck. "Well . . ." He looked at Richard who had a small smile on his face.

Charles stepped in. "We were just throwing the ball around. Will . . . he. . ."

"His mind was elsewhere." Richard snuck a glance at Elizabeth.

Georgiana's lips had formed an 'O' and Anne smiled. Charles walked over to Jane. Elizabeth had an urge to examine the oak tree across the vast lawn.

Everyone had fallen into conversation, except Elizabeth and William.

They stood in front of each other for a moment.

William cleared his throat. "Did you sleep well?"

Elizabeth pulled her eyes away from his clinging white shirt. She cleared her throat. "Yes." She took in a deep breath. "Very well."

    "Was breakfast alright?"

Elizabeth had to stifle her amusement at the sincerity William conveyed, some of the dark waves in his hair had curled and fell on his forehead, giving him a boyish look.

"Yes." Elizabeth's eyebrow curved. "But, I'm concerned at the time Mrs. Reynolds woke me up."

William took a step closer to Elizabeth. "I told her that you weren't to be disturbed before ten o'clock."

    "Did you?"

William was drawn by the way one of the corners of her mouth pulled up. "I distinctly remember that you don't wake up before ten on the weekends and. . . you like to stay in bed just to lay there." His eyes wandered over her figure.

Elizabeth felt her neck and ears burn. "Well, I don't think I deserve special treatment."

William blinked several times. "I thought . . . You don't like what I did?"

"It's just that. . . I don't think it's fair that I get to sleep in, making people wait for me." She glanced at Anne and Georgiana.

He smiled. "You're well worth the wait."

Elizabeth was caught by the intensity of his eyes. After a few moments, Elizabeth looked away. "Does this happen all the time?"

William's forehead wrinkled. Elizabeth's eyes were fixed on his wet shirt.

"Uh. . . no." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, not since high school."

    Elizabeth chuckled.

"I suppose I should go change."

Elizabeth nodded. "I'm sure Georgiana wouldn't appreciate it if you missed her party because you caught a cold."

"Right." William smiled and began walking towards the house.

Georgiana looked up from the conversation she was having with Anne and Richard. "William, where are you going?"

"I'm going back to the house to change."

Georgiana walked towards him. "I was hoping you would help me give the tour of the grounds." She shot a glance at Elizabeth. "You know this place better than I do, and would probably give a much better tour than I could."

William chuckled. "I'm sure you're doing fine."

Anne picked up on the conversation. "Do you have other plans?"

Most of the arrangements for the party had been taken care of and since Mrs. Reynolds' return a few days ago, his responsibilities lessened even more. "Uh. . . no."

At the same time, Anne and Georgiana said, "Good!"

Georgiana cleared her throat. "We'll just wait for you."

"No. That's not necessary. You should continue the tour. I'll catch up with you when I've changed."

    Georgiana sighed. "Alright."

    William walked to the house.

Georgiana turned to everyone else. "Well, we should get going. Richard? Charles? Would you like to join us?"

They both nodded in agreement and they all walked towards a grove of trees.

Jane and Charles immediately paired off. Georgiana walked with Anne, talking in hushed tones. Richard walked with Elizabeth.

    "Mind if I join you?"

    Elizabeth smiled. "Not at all."

They walked in silence before they both started at the same time.

    "Ladies first."

"Oh, I was just going to say how lovely Pemberley is."

Richard nodded. "Yes. William's dad pays a good deal of attention to this place."

Elizabeth smiled at the tree-lined pathway they walked through. "It's obvious he does."

Richard looked at Elizabeth for a moment. He understood how easy it was to like her. "What are your impressions of this place so far?"

Elizabeth took in a deep breath. "I wasn't sure what to expect. I knew William came from a wealthy family, but this . . ." she gestured with her hand, "I never imagined this."

"It's a bit overwhelming at first."

In a lowered tone, she said, "To say the least."

Richard hesitated before he said, "What do you think of William's family?"

Elizabeth looked at Richard for a moment. "I like Georgiana and Anne. They've been so nice. I hope we can stay friends." A slow smile spread across her face. "I like Mr. Darcy." The smile softened. "In some ways, he reminds me of my father."

Richard saw the change in her smile. He decided to lighten things up. "And what about me?"

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at him. "You?" Then a playful smile appeared on her face. "You seem nice enough."

In a mock hurt tone, he said, "That's all?"

"Well, you do seem nice, but I must admit," Elizabeth glanced at Anne, "I've heard some questionable stories about you."

Richard shot a look at Anne and groaned. "What has she poisoned you with?"

    Elizabeth laughed. "I'm afraid I can't tell."

Anne walked over to them and looked at Richard. "What was that look for?"

"Apparently someone has been misrepresenting me." He gave her a pointed look.

Anne blinked. "That's too bad, but are you sure you're being misrepresented?"

    "This person always does."

    "I'm sure they don't."

"It's their mission in life to torment me."

"Do you think this person's life revolves around you?"

"Well, it's not like this person has anything else to do."

Before Anne could say anything, Georgiana walked over to them and said, "This is what we have to put up with all the time."

Elizabeth laughed. "I thought William was exaggerating."

Richard stared at Elizabeth and Anne blushed.

Georgiana cleared her throat. "C'mon. There's still much to see."

Elizabeth followed Georgiana. Anne and Richard exchanged weary looks at each other before Anne joined Georgiana and Elizabeth, and Richard joined Charles and Jane.

Elizabeth tried to listen to Georgiana talk about how her great, great, great grandfather had installed a lake to fish in, but she was containing her amusement over Richard and Anne. How could they be so blind about each other?

    Part 2 "The Hillside"

William scanned the horizon for them. When he could not see a trace of the group, he dug his heels into his horse and it moved at a quick trot towards the grove of trees. He thought it would probably look odd if everyone saw him riding at full speed, especially because they were just taking a leisure tour of the grounds.

For two weeks he had tried to prepare himself for Elizabeth's arrival. He wanted to make sure everything was perfect during her stay. He was glad that Anne and Georgiana were more than willing to make sure that was possible. He hoped the special attention gave Elizabeth an inclination of how he felt.

However, he could not deny that there was a rift between them now. He felt it at the airport. When she looked at him, he knew things were not going to be the same. What struck him deeply was the fact that it was him who was the source of this rift between them. I should've never have said that. Why did I say that? Isabella's words haunted him again. You expect too much, too soon. William gave his horse a sharp dig in its sides and the horse went into a gallop.

He tried to block the words out of his mind, but it was no use. Her words were no longer hurtful. They were true. William did expect certain things, especially when it came to his personal life. He knew what he wanted and when he found it, he was quite determined to get it. But, the problem was whether or not Elizabeth wanted the same things he wanted.

So far things seemed to be going well. He had expected a more cold reception from Elizabeth, but it was not as bad he imagined it would be. In fact, she was attentive to what he said and did not try to avoid him. Then a thought rushed through his mind. What if she's just being friendly for Georgiana's sake? After all, technically, Elizabeth was Georgiana's guest. He shook his head, trying to shake off the idea. He knew something more than just a friendly acquaintance existed between them, but it seemed like that's all they had at the moment.

Then Richard's words echoed in his mind. You have to show her that you're interested. He hoped that Elizabeth could see that. Just then, he saw the object of his thoughts a few yards away and spurned his horse towards her.

Elizabeth stood a few feet away from everyone else, admiring the scenic view of the rolling hillsides. She had to admit, William's home was enchanting. The idea of coming home to a place filled with such natural beauty caused something deep in her to stir. Stop it. Stop thinking of what if's. Although she tried not to think along those lines, her mind wandered and she thought about what if William had never said those words. Things could have been so different. Instead of Georgiana showing her around the estate, it would have been William. She sighed at the thought of her and William arm in arm, walking on the grounds, but in no particular direction. It did not matter because they were content being in each other's company. She shook her head. That's not real. Before she could further scold herself, the sound of hoofs pounding on the ground caught her attention.

When she looked at the source, Elizabeth forgot to breathe. William was riding on a dark chocolate colored horse towards her. There was no awkwardness in the way he rode. He moved with the horse, in tune with its rhythmic gallop. He stopped a few feet in front of her and dismounted with ease. Elizabeth was mesmerized by the depth of his gaze directed at her.

He walked towards Elizabeth, and stopped just a few feet in front of her. "I found you."

Elizabeth let out the breath she had been holding. "I didn't know I was lost."

A warm smile spread across William's lips. "Right."

Elizabeth tore her eyes away from William, afraid of what might happen if she did not. "That's a beautiful horse." She walked to the horse and looked it for a moment.

"You can touch him. He doesn't bite."

Elizabeth hesitated before she reached out and pat the horse on its neck. "Does he have a name?"

    "Truffle."

She looked up at him in disbelief.

    "Georgiana named him."

    She smiled. "Oh."

"William! You made it." Georgiana jogged to her brother. "I was beginning to think you forgot about us."

William shot a furtive glance at Elizabeth. "Never."

"You brought Truffle with you too." Georgiana gave a hearty rub on Truffle's neck and then took the reins from William. "C'mon. Let's go join the others."

They all walked to join the rest of the group.

William turned to Elizabeth. "How do you like the grounds?"

"I like them very much." She thought for a moment before she said, "My father would've liked this place."

William studied Elizabeth's face. "I wish he could've seen it."

Elizabeth steadied herself by searching the landscape. "I haven't seen the hillside that's in the portrait outside my room. Where is it?"

William cleared his throat. "It's close actually."

Elizabeth saw William's shoulders tense. "Would it be possible to see it?"

    William nodded.

They walked in silence, following the others who were ahead of them. Elizabeth looked at him. He had an expression on his face she did not recognize. She could not help feeling that she may have touched on something of a delicate matter.

"William, we're going to stop at the big willow tree for a moment." Georgiana pulled the horse with her.

    "Alright."

Instead of following the rest of the group, William stopped and turned to Elizabeth. "Would you like to see that hillside?"

"Yes. If it's not too much trouble."

"Not at all." William placed his hand on the small of her back and they walked away from everyone else.

Elizabeth reeled at the closeness of William's body.

    "Elizabeth?"

"Huh? I'm sorry did you say something?"

William smiled. "I said the hillside has been slightly altered since the portrait had been done."

"Oh. I hope I recognize it."

William raised his hand and pointed. "There."

Elizabeth looked in the direction he pointed. She surveyed the lush landscape, searching for something familiar. She almost gave up when a sudden flash of white in the distance caught her attention. She looked again. It was the hillside in the portrait, but some kind of structure rested on it.

"I see it, but . . ." When she looked at William, he was looking at the structure as well. "William?"

His eyes were trained on the mysterious structure when he spoke. "My mother and father used to take horseback rides through the estate." He looked down. "This was my mother's favorite spot. They would spend hours here, taking in the scenery before they ventured back to the house." William cleared his throat. "When my mother died . . . " he looked at the monument again, "My father had that built. It's a mausoleum."

Elizabeth took a few steps in its direction and tried to discern the mausoleum's outline. From the distance, she could see a dome shaped roof and some pillars underneath. The rest was obscured by trees.

She looked back at William. "Do you ever go there?"

"Sometimes I go there when I need a place to think."

Elizabeth walked towards William and looked at him for a moment. "I don't know what to say."

William took a step closer to her. "You don't have to say anything."

"But, I do." She searched in her mind for the words to express how honored she felt that he shared this with her. She wanted to tell him how he always reminded her that she was not alone, in anything, and she was glad that it was him who she was with at that moment.

William watched the struggle in her eyes. He reached out and caressed her face. "I know."

Elizabeth looked down and closed her eyes. She wanted to capture this moment. This moment of perfect understanding between them.

When she felt William pull his hand away, she opened her eyes. She looked in the direction he was looking. "Where'd everyone go?"

The willow tree was abandoned. Anne, Richard, Jane, Charles, Georgiana, and Truffle were walking towards the house.

    Elizabeth and William laughed.

"They could've at told us they were leaving."

William shook his head. "Well, if we start walking now, we could catch up with them."

    "Alright."

They walked at a quick pace and when they were close enough to the others, William said in a loud voice, "If I didn't know any better, I 'd say we were left behind on purpose."

A playful smile spread on Elizabeth's lips. "No. I can't believe Georgiana or Anne would do such a thing. They've been such excellent hostesses."

Georgiana's shoulders sagged. Anne continued talking with Jane and Charles.

A mischievous smile appeared on William's lips. "My mother would be so proud of the both of them."

Georgiana stopped suddenly, causing the horse to whine. When she turned around, her cheeks were flushed. "I-I had to get back to the house."

Anne looked up from her conversation with Jane and Charles. "Georgie has to start getting ready for tonight."

"It's only 1 o'clock." Richard received matching glares from Anne and Georgiana.

Jane saw Anne's and Georgiana's reaction towards Richard's comment. "It shows how much men know about these things. This is a very important day for Georgiana. Of course she wants to look her best."

Richard's head hung low and Charles wore a silly smile on his face. Anne and Georgiana gave grateful looks to Jane.

"Well, she can't get ready with Truffle by her side." William walked over to Georgiana and took the reins from her.

"I was going to give him to one of the butlers to return to the stables."

He smiled at his sister. "It's alright. I'll return him."

"I'll join you." Richard sprinted over to William.

"I'll go too." Although Charles liked being with Jane, he did not want to be left with a bunch of women who would probably talk about the ball and evening dresses.

Before they left for the stables, William handed Richard the reins, and walked up to Elizabeth.

He looked down and then back up at Elizabeth. "Will you still save a dance for me tonight?"

Elizabeth blinked several times. "I didn't think you'd still want to-"

    "I do."

Elizabeth was beginning to get lost in the depth of his eyes. She cleared her throat. "Alright." Then a playful smile spread across her lips. "I'll try, but Georgiana did say there would be plenty of other men who might want to dance with me."

William brushed a stray curl away from Elizabeth's cheek. "Not if I can help it." He looked at her for a moment before he turned away and walked with Charles and Richard back to the stables.

Richard handed the reins back to William. "What was all that about?"

A small smile pulled at the corner of William's lips. "Just showing her I'm still interested."

Richard shook his head and Charles gave William an approving smile.

Jane, Anne, and Georgiana walked over to Elizabeth. She stood in the same place, watching William's retreating figure.

Anne nudged Jane and tipped her head towards Elizabeth. Jane asked, "Elizabeth, is everything alright?"

Elizabeth looked around her and realized she was no longer alone. "Oh, yeah. Everything's fine."

"What did William want?" Anne and Jane looked at Georgiana with wide eyes.

Elizabeth laughed. "He made me promise to save him a dance."

Before they could ask Elizabeth any more questions, Elizabeth had walked off towards the house.

    "What did you say?"

"Are you going to dance with him?"

"You do want to dance with him, right?"

"I can't believe he did that."

"I know. He's my brother. You'd think I'd know him, but this is such a surprise."

Jane cleared her throat which caused Anne and Georgiana to look up from their conversation. They saw that Elizabeth stood with her hands on her hips.

"Did you guys encourage him to do that?"

    "No."

"We're just as surprised as you are."

Elizabeth examined Georgiana and Anne who wore genuine expressions of astonishment. Then she looked at Jane who shrugged her shoulders.

Elizabeth turned back and started to walk back to the house again. "I actually already promised him one dance before he left." Elizabeth hesitated. "It wasn't like he was asking me out of the blue. He was probably just reminding me of my obligation."

"Obligation?" Jane and Georgiana shot a glare at Anne. "I mean," she hesitated before she said, "If he asked you for another dance, would you?"

Elizabeth faltered, but managed to keep moving. "I don't think he will."

"Why not?" This time Georgiana received glares from Anne and Jane.

Elizabeth stopped and turned towards them. "Because . . . I don't think he's interested in me in that way."

Jane shook her head, Anne looked at Elizabeth in disbelief, and Georgiana opened her mouth and closed it several times.

In a calm voice, Jane asked, "Why do you think that?"

Elizabeth let out a deep breath. "There's all these damn hints, but he's never said-" She looked at Anne and Georgiana before she said, "I just don't think he's interested in my in that way."

    "In what way?"

"What are you trying to say about my brother?"

Elizabeth bit her lip and looked at Jane for help.

"Now, hold on. I'm sure Elizabeth didn't mean to imply anything bad about William's character." Jane looked at Elizabeth.

"No. Of course not." Elizabeth tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "It's just that, before William left, he gave me the impression he was not interested in a serious relationship."

Anne and Georgiana were about to object when Jane gave them a pointed look.

Elizabeth continued, "I appreciate all the attention William has shown me, but . . . I think there's nothing more than just a friendly acquaintance between us."

Again, Georgiana and Anne were going to disagree with Elizabeth, but Jane was quick to ask. "What if he wanted more than just a friendly acquaintance with you?"

Elizabeth wanted to strangle Jane when she saw the hopeful looks on Georgiana's and Anne's face. "I don't think there's a possibility."

Anne pressed on. "But, there might be."

    Georgiana nodded in agreement.

    Elizabeth sighed. "I suppose . . . I wouldn't mind. . ."

    Anne's and Georgiana's faces brightened.

"But." Elizabeth gave them a warning look. "If he wants more than a friendly acquaintance, he would have to be the one to say so."

    Jane's brow wrinkled. "Elizabeth."

"He's the one that said if I met other people, he would be OK with it."

    Anne cringed and Georgiana gasped.

Elizabeth continued, "But, if he's not OK with that, he should be the one to tell me that he's not."

Jane shook her head. "I don't understand. Why don't you just tell him how you feel?"

"Because . . . I don't think he feels the same way I do . . . or else why would he have said that?"

Georgiana and Jane were at a loss for an answer. Anne took a step towards Elizabeth.

"Elizabeth, please don't be so quick to judge William." Anne put a hand on her shoulder. "Just give him time."

Elizabeth studied Anne's expression for a moment. "Alright."

Anne smiled in relief and they continued their way towards the house. They walked in companionable silence for some time before Elizabeth chuckled.

Jane turned to her sister. "What's so funny?"

"Well, I tried to pick a dress that would . . ." She looked at Georgiana and Anne, "make William go wild."

They all laughed. When they entered the house, Georgiana asked, "And were you successful?"

Elizabeth laughed again. "I'm afraid not. Jane was there."

"It's very elegant. It's a soft green color. It has straps and has a U-shaped collar, and it's a sheath."

Georgiana was impressed. "Maybe you should've gone with me to look for my dress. What does yours look like?"

"Mine is a baby blue color. It has spaghetti straps and an empire shape silhouette."

"You have to show us your dresses." Anne lead the way upstairs.

The rest of them followed Anne. Since Elizabeth's room was the closest, they entered her room first.

Elizabeth took out her garment bag from the dressing room and placed it on the bed. Everyone stood around her, waiting with anticipation when she unzipped it. When she uncovered her dress, everyone was surprised to see what was in it.

"Elizabeth, where's your dress?" Anne lifted the Armani suit to look underneath it.

"I-I don't know." She lifted the nametag and read it. "It says E. Bennett." Her eyes widen at the rest of the information. "The address is in Seattle."

Jane looked at the nametag. "And Bennett is spelled with two T's. Ours is spelled with one."

"Oh, no." Elizabeth searched the garment bag. "I guess, our garment bags got mixed up."

Georgiana checked her watched. "There's less than four hours until the ball."

"I can't believe this happening." Elizabeth went to search the rest of her luggage.

"I'll see if I have something you can wear." Jane left the room.

Georgiana gave Elizabeth an apologetic look. "I'm so sorry this happened."

"Don't apologize. It's not your fault. I didn't read the tag very carefully when I picked it up." She smiled to herself. "I was a little distracted."

Jane walked back in. "I have another dress, but I'm afraid it's not formal enough for tonight."

    "Well, I suppose I can't go then. . ."

"Of course you're going." Georgiana looked at Anne who had not said anything for some time.

"I don't think there's any way to find some thing at such short notice."

"I'm sure I have something you could borrow."

Elizabeth looked at Georgiana's slim, willowy figure than at her own shapely one. "Thank you, but I don't think I could fit into something of yours."

"I got it!" Anne turned to Georgiana. "You. You need to start getting ready."

    "But-"

"No, buts. I'll take care of this." She shooed Georgiana out of the room. Then she turned to Jane and Elizabeth. "Which airline did you guys fly?"

Jane looked curiously at Anne. "United."

"Right. I'll call the airline and tell them about the mix-up." She turned to Elizabeth. "This E. Bennett person may have already called the airline."

    "What if he hasn't?"

"Then we go to plan B."

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at Anne. "What's plan B?"

"I haven't gotten that far yet." They all laughed.

After a moment, Elizabeth asked, "What should we do in the meantime?"

"Both of you should start getting ready."

Jane shook her head. "What about you?"

"I'll be fine." Then in a wry tone she said, "It's not like I have anyone to get ready for."

    Elizabeth's brow wrinkled. "Anne."

"C'mon. I have some phone calls to make and both of you need to start getting ready." She was out of the room before they could argue any further.

Elizabeth sighed. "Now I know why she's William's assistant."

Jane smiled. "She can be quite determined." Then she turned to Elizabeth. "Are you going to be alright?"

Elizabeth nodded. "You know I'm not the type to cry about things like this."

Jane hugged her before she went to her own room to start getting ready. Elizabeth shut the door behind Jane. When she did not hear any footsteps outside, she walked over the bed and sat next to the Armani suit. How could I not notice it was the wrong garment bag? She got up from the bed and went into the bathroom. She turned on the water for the shower. After a moment, she turned a switch and soon, the bathtub began to fill. I might as well. She was not in any rush to get ready for the evening.

"Elizabeth?" The voice came from outside her bathroom door.

Elizabeth lifted her head up from her sleepy state in the bathtub. "Yes?"

"It's Anne. I called the airport and this E. Bennett person did call the airline."

Elizabeth got out of the tub and wrapped a towel around her. She opened the door. "And?"

"It turns out he was on his way to Spain."

Elizabeth blinked several times. "So, my dress is in Spain?"

Anne nodded. "But, I've already started on plan B."

    "Which is?"

"Well, I called in a favor to my friend Emma. She's going to send some dresses over." She checked her watched. "They should be here any minute now."

Georgiana walked into the room, wearing a robe, her hair done in an upswept style. "How's everything going so far?"

A small smile appeared on Elizabeth's lips. "My dress is in Spain."

    "Oh, no."

"But, I called Emma. She's sending some dresses over."

"Good." Georgiana turned to Elizabeth. "The hairstylist just finished my hair. I was thinking I could send her over here. If that's OK."

"Oh, you don't have to. I was going to do it myself."

"It's alright. She was going to do Anne's hair," She looked at Anne. "But, since Anne isn't quite ready, she could work on you."

"I've already caused so much trouble-"

"No." Georgiana and Anne tried to reassure Elizabeth.

"I'll hop in the shower and you can get your hair done while I'm in there."

"I'll ask Jane if she's interested too."

Elizabeth looked at both of them for a moment. "Alright. But, if it'll cost extra-"

"Trust me, we're making her earn her money."

Elizabeth smiled. "Then I should finish up in the bathroom then."

Georgiana went to ask Jane if she wanted her hair done, but she had already done it herself. Anne told Mrs. Reynolds to make sure to let her know when the dresses arrived. Elizabeth went to go back to the bathroom, but heard a knock on her bedroom door.

Expecting to see Anne, she was surprised when she opened the door to see William.

    "Oh."

"I just came up to see if you needed anything." He could not help letting his eyes linger on her towel. "I heard what happened."

"Uh, no. Thank you. I was just finishing up." She held her towel tighter. "Anne's been helping me."

"Good." He cleared his throat. "Well, if there's anything else. Just let me know."

"Alright." She was about to close the door when she thought of something. "Actually, if you could ask Georgiana or Anne if they have an extra robe," she looked down at herself, "that would be really helpful."

    William smiled. "Of course."

Elizabeth shut the door. I can't believe this is happening. She went to drain the bathtub and took out the rest of her toiletries and her make up. She took out her lotion and began applying some on her legs. When she reached her arms, there was another knock on the door.

"Just a minute." She rubbed in the last of the lotion on her arms and went to answer the door.

When she opened it, William held up a dark blue robe through the opening.

Elizabeth laughed and took it. "Hold on." She put on the terry cloth robe, then opened the door for William to see. "It's a kind of big." Elizabeth pulled up the sleeves. Then she sniffed the collar. She recognized that woody, almost spicy smell. She looked up at William.

    "Uh . . . it's actually my robe."

    "Oh, I can't take-"

"It's alright. Georgiana and Anne are using theirs and since I didn't need it, I just thought. . . You don't mind, do you?"

"No. Of course not." She shifted in her spot. "Do you?"

He breathed in the soft floral fragrance that emanated from Elizabeth. "Not at all." He continued looking at her, forcing himself to stay in his place.

She knew that look on William's face. Elizabeth was not sure what to do. A part of her knew she should not do something she would regret later. She was not sure of his feelings. Another part, the part that became dizzy at the smell of William's scent on his robe, wanted him to come in her room and try to take his robe back.

They both started at the same time.

William took a step forward. "Yes?"

Elizabeth tried to steady her breath. She did not know what to say. Then she blurted out, "Why?"

William saw the look of hurt in her eyes and berated himself for being the cause of it. He knew what she was talking about. He reached out for her face and stroked the apple of her cheek. "Elizabeth, I thought . . ." He searched for the right words.

"Elizabeth! They're here!" Anne walked into the room, but when she saw that William was there, she stopped at the doorway. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know."

"No. It's alright." Elizabeth walked forward. "William was just lending me his robe."

Anne gave William an apologetic look. "If I had known-"

"It's alright, Anne." He walked over and gave her a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. "You ladies need to finish getting ready." He turned to Elizabeth. "I'll see you later."

Elizabeth nodded. William left the room.

Anne rushed over to Elizabeth. "I'm sorry."

    "It's alright, Anne."

Anne gave her a doubtful look.

"Really, it's alright." Elizabeth walked over to the doorway. "I thought you said they were here."

"Oh! Right." Anne stepped out of the room. She came back a few minutes later with a young lady who carried several garment bags and another one who had a roll away carry on.

"Harriet, there should be room in the dressing room to hang those dresses. Sarah, you can set up in the bathroom." Anne turned to a young man who carried some boxes. "Just set those next to the bed. Oh! Run and tell Georgiana and Jane that the dresses have arrived." The young man did as he was told and was soon out of the room.

"Anne, what's all this?" She opened one of the boxes the young man had set down. "Shoes? I have shoes."

"I know. But, they probably won't match the new dress."

Sarah stepped out from the bathroom. "I'm ready when you are."

"Right." Anne turned to Elizabeth. "Sarah is going to fix my hair here, so that I can help you if you needed help picking out a dress and also so Sarah wouldn't have to move again."

Georgiana walked in and a few minutes later Jane followed.

"Oh, I can't wait to see what Emma sent over." Georgiana sat on the bed, picking up a shoe box.

Jane read the letters on the boxes. "E-K-N-Y? Why does that sound familiar?"

Elizabeth read the letters too. "Isn't that the logo for Emma Knightley in New York?"

Jane nodded in agreement and when understanding dawned on both women, they turned to Georgiana and Anne.

"Oh my gosh! There's no way I can wear this stuff."

    "Is this the Emma Knightley?"

Anne chuckled. "Yes, you're going to wear this stuff and yes, it is. We went to college together."

Elizabeth and Jane looked at each other.

"Elizabeth, please don't worry about it." Georgiana got up from the bed and lead her to the dressing room. "Emma is a good friend of the family. In fact, she helped me choose my dress for tonight."

Elizabeth stopped in front of the dressing room. "I-I don't know."

Anne stepped out of the bathroom to Sarah's annoyance. "Oh, just get in there. Harriet, if she resists, tell her she'll be going down to the party in that bathrobe." She gave Elizabeth a nudge inside and shut the door. "Let me know when she has the first dress on." Anne walked back to the bathroom.

Jane laughed and sat on the bed. Georgiana took a seat next to her.

"I hope Elizabeth finds something she likes."

"I hope so too." Jane picked up another box. "She's not used to these kind of things."

    "What do you mean?"

"It was hard enough getting her to get the first dress."

Georgiana let out a small laugh. "Oh."

Richard checked his watch. "They started at one, it's nearly four, and they're still getting ready."

Charles shook his head. "If you had any sisters, you'd understand."

"Well, there's Georgiana. But, like Jane said this a big day for her, so I understand, sort of. Then there's Anne. . ."

    "What about Anne?"

    "Well, she's like a sister too, but lately . . . I don't know what it is."

Charles waited for Richard to continue. When he did not, he ventured a comment. "Does this have anything to do with Henry Crawford?"

Richard turned to Charles. "Why do you say that?"

"Well, I remember you didn't approve of him at all."

Richard snorted. "Henry Crawford? No one approves of him."

    "Then what?"

Richard thought a moment. "Anne's changed."

    "In what way?"

Richard paced the room. "I don't know." He ran his fingers through his hair. "I mean, there are times when she's this completely different person. Like when Henry Crawford was around. She was this-this-"

    "Woman?"

Richard looked up at Charles who wore a smug look on his face. "I know she's a-a-a-"

    "Woman. She's a woman, Richard."

"I know." Richard threw himself on the couch. "She's a-a woman."

Just then William walked into the room and walked straight to the liquor stand. He poured out a shot of brandy and downed it quick.

Richard looked at his cousin. "The party doesn't start for a couple of hours."

William put the glass down. He went and sat in one of the armchairs.

Charles sat across from him. "What happened?"

William looked at Charles than at Richard. "I just left Elizabeth's room."

Richard and Charles waited for William to continue.

"I thought I was doing the right thing." He rubbed his forehead. "But, now. . . if I could take it back. . ."

Richard leaned forward in his seat. "Did you talk to her about it?"

William shook his head. "No, not exactly. Just the look in her eyes. . . where do I begin?"

    "Begin at the beginning."

William and Richard looked at Charles.

Charles continued, "Elizabeth seems like the direct type from what I hear from Jane. She won't know how you feel until you tell her."

    William nodded in agreement.

After a few moments, Charles got up to leave. "I have to get going. I'm sure it'll all work out, Will."

    William sighed. "I hope so."

"I'll see you all later." Charles saw himself out.

After a few minutes, Richard said, "Since when did Charles become so insightful?"

William chuckled. "I don't know, but I think it has something to do with Jane."

Mr. Darcy walked into the sitting room. "Boys, you should start getting ready. I want you two to be ready in an hour. I don't want Georgiana to feel like she has to rush down to greet guests if some arrive early."

    "Alright, dad."

When they did not move right away, Mr. Darcy, in a slightly put out tone said, "Do I have to get Anne down here?"

They both groaned, "No." They got out of their seats and walked towards the stairs.

Mr. Darcy crossed his arms and watched the two young men climb the stairs, a bit too slow for his taste. He shook his head. It's going to be a long night.

"I liked the black one. The one with the halter top that cuts low in the back." Georgiana grinned. "I'm sure that will grab William's attention."

Anne called out from the bathroom. "Along with the whole room."

"What about the cream one. I liked the off the shoulder detailing."

Again, Anne called out, "Maybe for a wedding, Jane?"

    Georgiana giggled and Jane blushed.

Georgiana asked, "Well, what do you think, Anne? Which one did you like?"

Anne stepped out of the bathroom, the curls in her hair shooting in different directions. "I liked that dark blue iridescent one. The sheath with the slit on the side."

Georgiana nodded in agreement. "That one was nice."

"I don't know if Elizabeth would like it. She's not big on strapless dresses."

At that moment, Elizabeth stepped out of the closet with the next dress.

    "Oh, Elizabeth! That's lovely!"

"You look very nice in that one. That color looks very good on you."

Anne, however, had to take a closer look. She examined the dress from the front and then had Elizabeth turn around. "How do you like it, Elizabeth?"

    Elizabeth sighed. "It's alright."

Georgiana got up from her seat. "What? You look beautiful."

Jane walked over to Elizabeth. "I think I like this one the best."

Anne looked at the dress for a moment. "Why don't you like it?"

Elizabeth looked down at her bare shoulders.

Anne turned to Harriet. "Is there a wrap for this?"

Harriet returned with a sheer wrap and put it over Elizabeth's shoulders. "How about that?"

Elizabeth stood in front of the mirror. "That's a little better."

Anne rolled her eyes. "This is the one."

    Jane smiled. "Definitely."

Georgiana giggled. "William won't be able to take his eyes off you."

They all stared at Georgiana. "What?"

Anne let out a small laugh. "Go finish getting ready."

"Oh! Right." Georgiana started to walk out of the room.

"I'm going to go finish up too." Jane followed Georgiana.

"I'm almost done. You can change out of that while I finish up and then Sarah can work on you." Anne headed back to the bathroom.

Elizabeth walked back into the dressing room, followed by Harriet.

After a moment, Harriet spoke up. "This dress really does look good on you."

"Thank you." A small smile spread on Elizabeth's lips. "I do like it."

"Then why were you so reluctant to agree with all of them?"

Elizabeth shrugged. "I suppose I'm just a little nervous."

"You have nothing to be nervous about." Harriet helped Elizabeth back into William's robe. "I've fitted a lot of women who had the attitude and prestige, but none of them had the grace and dignity you carry."

Elizabeth turned to Harriet. Overcome with Harriet's sincerity, Elizabeth did not know what to say, so she hugged her to Harriet's surprise. Then she released Harriet. "Thank you."

Harriet gave her a warm smile.

    "Elizabeth! Sarah's ready for you."

    "Coming."

She met Anne outside of the dressing room. "I heard you talking about the blue dress."

Anne looked at Elizabeth. "Yeah. So."

    "You should wear it."

    "What?"

"Harriet!" Elizabeth took Anne by the arm. "Put the blue dress on Anne."

"Are you crazy? There's no way I'm going to wear that."

Elizabeth pushed Anne into the closet in the same way Anne had done to her. Then with a grin, she said, "If she resists, send her down in that bathrobe." She shut the door before Anne could refuse.

"I want to see you in it too." Elizabeth laughed and headed for the bathroom.

In a muffled voice, Anne yelled, "There is no way I'm wearing this. I'm not going down there-" Elizabeth strained to hear the rest, but it was silent. A few minutes later, Anne walked out with the dress on.

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at her and gave her a knowing smile.

Anne let out a deep breath. "Alright. Maybe I will wear this."

Elizabeth let out a hearty laugh. "You look beautiful."

Anne blushed. "Thank you." Then she looked at Elizabeth. "I'll be in my room. If you need anything, just let me know."

    "Alright."

Anne put her robe over her dress, but did not tie it close. Harriet needed to do some minor alterations, but Anne preferred to do them in her own room. Anne went ahead, allowing Harriet to get the needed materials for the alterations.

Anne was walking down the hall when one of the doors opened unexpectedly.

    "Anne?"

Anne stopped mid-stride at the sound of the familiar voice. She turned around. "Richard."

    He looked at her.

    "What?"

    "Nothing. It's just that. . ."

    "C'mon. Out with it already."

Richard walked towards Anne. His eyes taking in her form, making Anne shift in her spot. He reached over and slid off one of the shoulders of her robe.

Anne barely managed to say, "Richard."

He looked at her, capturing her eyes. "You're a beautiful woman."

Anne smiled. "I'm glad you finally noticed." She pulled her robe back on. "I have to finish getting ready."

Just then, Harriet walked out of Elizabeth's room. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt."

"No. It's alright. You didn't interrupt anything." Anne gave Richard a long look before she went back to her room, leaving Richard standing in the middle of the hall.

When Harriet walked by him, he stopped her. "That was Anne, right? Anne Debourgh."

    Harriet stifled her amusement. "Yes."

Richard rubbed the back of his neck. "It must be the dress."

"Actually, it's not the dress that makes the woman." Harriet walked off to Anne's room.

Richard stood there for a moment. "What the hell did I come out here for in the first place?" He shook his head and went back to his room. He continued to get ready, taking extra care in his preparations.

    Chapter 14 "Should I?"

Posted on Monday, 25 March 2002

Mr. Darcy and William were captivated by the figure floating down the grand staircase. When she reached the bottom, Mr. Darcy took her by her hands and leaned in and kissed her forehead.

"Georgiana." His eyes were bright. "Your mother would be so proud."

Georgiana kissed her father on the cheek. "Thank you." Then she turned to her older brother.

William smiled with pride. "You've grown into a lovely woman." He leaned in and whispered, "But, that doesn't mean I won't stop acting like an older brother."

Georgiana gave him a playful tap on the shoulder. "Will."

He kissed her on the cheek. "Happy Birthday, Georgie."

Richard and Charles gave warm wishes to Georgiana as well.

    Then it was Caroline's turn.

"Georgiana." She took Georgiana by the hands like her father had, but held her out at arm's length. "What a spectacular gown. Did Emma help you with it?"

Georgiana willed her eyes from rolling at her. "Oh, you mean, Mrs. Knightley? Yes. She had one of her new designers from LA make it."

"Oh, yes. I do like that new designer. I saw him several times while I was out there visiting Charles."

"Yes, well, Mrs. Knightley thought that she would suit my tastes."

William lost track of the conversation when he saw Jane and Anne descending the stairs. Charles immediately went to greet Jane. Richard stood back, watching Anne speak with Mr. Darcy.

"Anne! You look absolutely fantastic." Mr. Darcy kissed her on the cheek. "Your mother will hardly recognize you."

Anne laughed. "Well, maybe that's a good thing."

William walked over to Anne. "Anne . . . you . . ." His father nudged him with his elbow. "Very nice."

    Anne smiled. "Thanks, Will."

Mr. Darcy and William turned to Richard and gave him expectant looks.

He cleared his throat and walked over to Anne. In a low voice, he said, "Lovely." Then he leaned in and kissed her cheek.

Anne felt her face burn, but hoped it did not show. "Thank you."

Mrs. Reynolds approached the small group at the bottom of the stairs. "Mr. Darcy, Miss Georgiana, the guests are beginning to arrive."

Mr. Darcy held out his arm to his daughter and she accepted it. William looked around and saw that Elizabeth was missing. He turned to ask Anne, but she was already being escorted away by Richard. He walked over to Jane and Charles.

    "Jane, where's Elizabeth?"

"She'll be down soon. Because she had to find a new dress, she needed a little more time getting ready."

    William looked up the stairs.

"She said not to wait for her. She'll be down as soon as she's ready."

William sighed before he followed the rest of the party.

"Oh, William! This is perfect. We can walk in together." Caroline took hold of his arm.

    William's jaw clenched. "Right."

After a few moments, Caroline asked, "So, what's this with Elizabeth's dress? She had to borrow one?"

"The airline got her luggage mixed up with someone else's."

"How awful!" However, Caroline did not sound sympathetic. "I hope she's found something decent to wear tonight."

"Mrs. Knightley was kind enough to send something over."

"Oh." She said with a bit of annoyance. "Well, I hope she appreciates such a generous gesture."

    "I'm sure she does."

"And it's too bad. Once she returns home, she'll never have another reason to wear it again."

"Then I suppose I'll just have to give her another reason." He removed his arm from Caroline's grip. "Excuse me." He then joined his father and sister in greeting the arriving guests.

Caroline masked her anger with one of her famous smiles. There is no way William is going to end up with her.

"If I may say so, you look beautiful."

Elizabeth smiled. "Thank you, Sarah. You did such a wonderful job with my hair."

Sarah pulled a curl in place. "My work was cut out for me."

Elizabeth stood in front of the mirror, smoothing out her skirt. "Harriet, what did you say the silhouette was for this dress?"

"It's an A-line. If you're not comfortable with a sheath, and not quite up to wearing a full skirt, an A-line is in between."

Elizabeth hugged her midriff. "I'm still not sure about this."

Harriet pulled Elizabeth's arms away and adjusted the bodice. "It's supposed to hug your figure." She then adjusted the folds of the skirt right below her waist where her bodice ended.

"And this?" Elizabeth pointed at her bare shoulders. "I can't believe I let them talk me into this."

Harriet pulled her bodice upwards again. "I told you, it won't budge." Under her breath, she said, "Whatever you do."

    "I heard that."

"I still think you don't need this." The wrap slid down passed Elizabeth's shoulders.

Elizabeth pulled on it like a security blanket. "Yes, I do."

Harriet let out a long sigh. "I'll admit the wrap adds a nice touch of modesty, but," She took the wrap and turned Elizabeth, so that her back faced the three way mirror. "You would be more stunning without it."

Elizabeth examined her profile in one of the mirrors. "I hardly recognize myself." She looked down and held up her skirt, the iridescent wine color shimmered in the light.

Sarah and Harriet stood together, whispering.

    Elizabeth raised her eyebrow. "What?"

Then without warning, the two girls walked up to Elizabeth, each taking a hold of one of her arms, and began walking towards the door.

    "What are you doing?"

    "You're ready."

    "What?"

"The dress is gorgeous on you."

"And there's nothing more I can do with your hair."

    "But-"

Harriet pulled the door open. "You look exquisite. We can't do anything more for you."

When they got to the top of the staircase, Harriet and Sarah let go of Elizabeth.

Harriet pointed down the staircase. "Go."

    Elizabeth hesitated.

    Sarah sighed. "He's waiting."

Elizabeth looked at Sarah for a moment. "And if he's not?"

Harriet rolled her eyes. "You're worse than Emma was on her first date with George."

Sarah took Elizabeth by the shoulders. "You're going to walk into that ballroom. If he's not there waiting for you, chances are when he sees you, he'll be by your side in no time."

Then Harriet took her by the shoulders too. "I know I don't know you that well, but you don't seem the type to get so easily intimidated."

Elizabeth turned towards the steps and thought for a moment. "Both of you are right. I hate feeling this way, but I can't help it. I know I shouldn't care whether or not William notices me. If he doesn't then . . . that's his loss." She turned to Harriet and Sarah. "Thank you." Elizabeth took a deep breath and walked down the stairs.

An older gentleman stood at the foot of the stairs with his back facing her. When she was a few steps behind him, the older gentleman turned around.

    Elizabeth smiled. "Good evening."

The older gentleman stared at her. Then he remembered he was not being paid to stare. He cleared his throat. "Ms. Bennet?"

    "Yes."

"Mr. Dar-William said I was to wait for you here and escort you to the ball room." He saw a look of disappointment on her face. He was quick to add, "He would have waited here himself, but he's sharing the hosting responsibilities with his father."

    "Of course."

The gentleman offered his arm and Elizabeth took it.

"Excuse me, but what's your name?"

    The gentleman smiled. "Henry Reynolds."

    "Any relation to Mrs. Reynolds?"

    He chuckled. "She's my sister-in-law."

"She's very nice." Elizabeth soon forgot her nervousness. "She brought up breakfast to me this morning. She also told me that her sister, well, I suppose she's your sister too, is recovering from her hip injury."

Mr. Reynolds looked at Elizabeth. "You know an awful lot about my family."

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pry."

"It's alright." He gave her a warm smile. "It's very refreshing."

Before they could continue their conversation, they were at the entrance of the ballroom.

    "Here you are, Ms. Bennet."

    "Thank you."

Mr. Reynolds left her side, but not before giving her a reassuring smile. Elizabeth's steps towards the entrance were cautious. Numerous voices drifted from the ballroom and a soft jazz melody could be heard as well. She stood at the entrance taking in the sights.

To the far left was the orchestra, assembled in the old fashion big band style. Tables with white tablecloths dotted the room, but the amber colored parquet floor was cleared in the center for a dance floor. Elizabeth searched the growing crowd for a familiar face and was met with two.

Georgiana rushed to her. "Elizabeth!" She took Elizabeth by the hand and lead her to Mr. Darcy.

Mr. Darcy's smile was warm. "You look beautiful, Elizabeth."

    "Thank you."

"We're almost done greeting guests." Georgiana looked around the room. "William was just here a few minutes ago, but apparently something needed his attention and he went off with Mrs. Reynolds."

She wondered if it was that obvious she had been looking for him. She decided she would have to conceal her interest better. "Where's everyone else?"

"Oh! You're sitting with Anne, Richard, Jane, Charles, and Caroline." Georgiana gave her an apologetic look when she said the last name. "Dad, Will, and I are sitting with Richard's and Anne's parents." Georgiana pointed in the direction of their tables.

Elizabeth saw Jane and Charles were the only ones seated. She looked at the table next to theirs and saw an older couple wearing grim expressions. The elder woman looked up from time to time at people with a suspicious glare.

"I'll see you later then." Elizabeth walked towards her table. After a moment she felt like she was being watched. Then she heard whispers behind her as she passed other tables.

    "Who's that?"

    "I have no idea."

    "I don't think she's anybody we know."

    "Didn't you hear?"

    "What?"

    Elizabeth slowed her pace.

    "I think she's staying here."

"Here? You mean like a guest?"

She moved on, but the whispers rippled to the other tables.

"Who do you think she is?"

    "I don't know, but I'd like to."

"Did she come here with someone?"

    "She looks like she's alone."

Charles stood up and waved. "Elizabeth! Over here!"

Elizabeth walked towards the table, but not before hearing another ripple of whispers.

    "Elizabeth?"

    "Elizabeth who?"

"Do you know of any Elizabeths?"

Charles held out a chair for her next to Jane. Once she was seated, he took the chair on the other side of Jane.

Elizabeth tried to focus her attention on something else. "How's everything going so far?"

"It seems to be going really well." Jane leaned in closer to her. "There's so many people to remember." She tilted her head in the direction of the table next to them. "Those are Anne's parents."
