Beginning, Section II
Prologue
A fiery red, beat up, old Mustang pulled up at Jay's Bar. From it, came out a young woman with wild, curly hair of a color that rivaled her car...fiery red. She wore enough make-up to embarrass movie stars and jewelry that showed no class. But one thing everyone was sure to notice about her, were her clear, green, catlike eyes. They had a soft, shrewd, intelligent quality in them and could mesmerize the best of them. This young woman was a fighter, and she demanded the very best.
She entered Jay's Bar and quickly scanned the crowd, looking for someone. She spotted him quickly sitting in his usual corner. She quickly made her way over and sat down opposite him without a word. She pulled out a cigarette and mumbled, "Hey."
"You're finally here," said the man. "I almost gave up on you."
She smiled or rather sneered at him, "I never break an appointment...you should know that by now. Or maybe you don't trust me?"
"No, no," he said hurriedly. "Of course I trust you. I have a new job for you."
"No really!" she said sarcastically. She pushed back some of the wayward curls from her face, and leaned forward. "What'd you think I drove down here for? To see your ugly face?"
"Hey! Let's not get personal here, okay," said the man. "You and I go way back and I don't want a minor argument come between us."
The girl sniggered, "Cut the crap and just give me the damn assignment."
The man glared at her for a second, debating whether to answer back sharply, but deciding against it, simply said, "Fine...have it your way. The boss got this new "project" for you..." He then proceeded to tell her all about it.
After the narrative, the girl asked, "But what'd they have against him?"
"He's the boss's old enemy, I understand," said the man. "The boss hates him like crazy and when this new project came about to his notice, he jumped right to the chance."
"And he chose me because...?" asked the girl, inquiringly.
"Hey! You're the sexiest lady we got! Who else would he choose!"
"Enough with the compliments already," she said, evenly. "It makes me sick."
"And you're tough too...a lethal combination. I'm glad you're on our side," he said. "Wouldn't wanna meet you in a dark alley, especially if you're ticked off."
For the first time, the girl broke into an honest smile, "You got that right! I don't want nobody to think that I'm a helpless woman."
"Helpless woman, ha!" Now it was his turn to snigger. "You're a cat-woman...especially with those damn green eyes."
The girl winked at him and started to get up, "Okay...I'll start getting prepared. Tell the boss I'll be around to see him in a few days." With that, she left the table and the bar, and moments later drove away.
In her car, the girl looked at the single sheet of paper she'd been given. It read:
William Darcy, President and CEO of Pemberley Fashion House.
It was just another name, just another human being. And now she'd been asked to destroy him. At any other time, any other place, such a suggestion might have outraged or repulsed her. But not now, not any more. She'd gone through too much, in too short a time. With her experiences, it was her way of life. She was no longer an innocent, protected schoolgirl. Reality had hit her.
Hence, she thought, without any pangs of conscience, about how she'd go about her mission. There was no hesitation or emotion. In her job, there was no room for those feelings. There was just determination and a drive to succeed. So what, if she'd have to destroy someone. So what if that person, just a name to her, might have a family that loved him. So what if all human emotion directed her against doing such a thing.
This was her job, and if there was one thing she'd learnt in all these years, it was to do her job well. Period. That was the only way to go. That was the only way a girl could survive in the mad world of men. She had learnt that lesson long ago, and she knew better than to forget it. She stepped on her gas and sped away, thinking only positive thoughts. Thinking of the assignment ahead. Her face was hard, and her red hair blew in the wind. And no one who saw her at that precise moment would be able to say that she had a heart. She looked cold and absolutely ruthless.
But that's the funny thing about this world. We're all born with a pure heart, but our experiences in life determine whether we keep it that way. Some people can and some people can't. It's nobody's fault...it's destiny. And destiny was what changed a quiet, happy little girl into the conniving, ruthless woman she'd become. She had a past, one she'd prefer to forget. It was nobody's fault...at least that's what she told herself. That was what let her survive, in the madness and insanity we call life.
Chapter 1
2 weeks later; New York City
The express elevator sped up to the 13th floor of the massive office building. The redhead persistently tapped on the floor with her high heels, annoying some of the other people taking the elevator.
"Can you stop that, please," said a finely dressed man eyeing the woman with a critical eye. She didn't appear to belong. She was dressed in a short, short mini-skirt and a tightly clinging top. Her flashy jewelry and makeup added to the effect as her mass of curly hair blew wild and unkempt. She did not appear to be dressed for work.
"Sweetheart, why don't you make me?" she said with a grin. Chewing gum noisily, she threw a challenging look at the man. She always got that kind of attention wherever she went and she'd learnt to hold her own against all the snooty, hypocritical men who would criticize her on the outside, but would slip her their room number the next moment.
"Sorry, lady," he said no more.
The elevator stopped at 13th floor and she got out, walking with rapid steps to her destination. Room 1304. She went in without hesitation and confidently walked up to the receptionist.
"I believe I have an appointment with Mr. Bingley," she said, smiling.
The receptionist looked up and said, "Your name, please?"
"Lisa Benz," she said smoothly.
The receptionist looked at her computer and said, "Yes, please take a seat. Mr. Bingley will be with you in a moment."
Lisa sat down and picked up some magazines, idly leafing through them. Her mind was busy trying to re-run the plan. There appeared to be no flaws and if all went well, Lisa hoped to be done within a month. But it would require a lot of hard work. And Lisa was not scared of that.
"Miss Benz?" came a voice, and Lisa looked up to see a sweet, blond man.
"Yes," replied Lisa. "Mr. Bingley, I presume?"
"Yes," replied he. "Step this way, please."
Lisa followed him to a room, presumably his office. It was comfortably furnished with an enormous window affording a spectacular view of the New York skyline. Lisa looked around. There were several framed pictures and trophies in the room. One that particularly caught her attention was an old picture of Mr. Bingley with a handsome, dark-haired man. They were both holding some sort of trophy in their hands and sported huge, happy grins.
"Please take a seat," Mr. Bingley told her.
Lisa removed her eyes from the picture and gave Mr. Bingley her full attention. He was fairly young, blond with an easy, self-assured smile and open manners. Lisa decided that he was not very astute and she would have no trouble in manipulating him.
"So, Ms. Benz...," he started to say.
"Call me Lisa," interrupted Lisa with a smile.
"Then you must call me Charlie," said Mr. Bingley, returning her smile. "Anyway, so Lisa...I was very pleased with your picture portfolio that you send in. Have you done modeling before?"
"No, Charlie, I haven't," replied Lisa. "But I think that I can handle it very well. I'm into photography, fashion and such."
"I must say that you have a natural talent," said Charlie, inspecting the pictures. "These seem professional."
Because they are, thought Lisa. I must remember to thank James later. James was her ex-lover, a photographer who was only too glad to help Lisa when she asked him. "Thank you," said Lisa. "You are too kind!"
"We do need some fresh faces in the lineup," admitted Charlie. "And we don't have any redheads, either."
Lisa smiled at him sweetly. This will be too easy! "Oh, Charlie, that's very nice to hear. I would love to bring variety to Pemberley Fashions." Lisa twirled her hair and pouted her lips, inclining her head flashing another bewitching smile.
Charlie smiled. "Well, then that's settled. You can come in later to do a photo shoot and then, we'll let you know about our decision."
"Oh, thank you!" exclaimed Lisa. This one's in the bag!
"The receptionist will set up a date," informed Charlie. "I'll be looking forward to seeing you soon, Lisa."
"As will I," said Lisa with a slight wink.
Charlie Bingley watched Lisa walk out of the office and shook his head. That woman was amazing. There was no way he was going to let her go away. She would be a valuable asset to Pemberley, especially with the fashion show coming up. Charlie grinned to himself. And of course, having her around meant having something pleasing to look at constantly. He crossed his arms and looked out the window. Life was good!
40 minutes later.
Lisa entered the dilapidated building that was her apartment with disgust. This was a hell-hole and she'd wanted to get out of it many times. But with her money and occupation, she'd learnt that this was good enough. It was better than being homeless, any day. She climbed two flights of stairs and entered her apartment. She turned on the lights and let out a scream at seeing a figure standing in the middle of the room.
"What a way to welcome me?" came a familiar voice.
"Wickie! You startled me!" exclaimed Lisa, taking a good look at her visitor. "You could have turned the lights on. You almost scared me to death."
George "Wickie" Wickham walked lazily up to Lisa, put his arms around her, pulled her close to him and kissed her with passion. "I missed you, babe," he whispered. "And you look deadly today, absolutely delicious!"
Lisa pushed him away from her and said, "Not now, Wickie."
Wickie looked hurt, "What, you don't love me anymore, bitch?!"
Lisa looked at him wryly and said, "I thought it was you who said, don't mix business with pleasure. And right now, I'm on business." She put her bag down and said, "Anyway, what're you doing here?"
"Just wanted to see you," said Wickie with a smile. He added, "How was the interview?"
"Great!" smiled Lisa. "That Charlie dude completely bought my story, and wants me to come in for a photo shoot."
"Lovely!" complimented Wickie. "I knew you could do it, babe."
"Thanks," said Lisa. "I try to do my job, that's all."
"And you're damn good at it," said Wickie. "Seducing Darcy should be no problem, either. You'll find a way."
"I know I will," said Lisa confidently. After all, what was another guy when she'd won over so many.
"That's why you're my favorite little bitch," said Wickie. He came close and kissed her again. "I must go now. When's the photo shoot?"
"Tomorrow," said Lisa.
"Good," said Wickie. "Bye, babe." He advanced to the door. But before he left, he turned and said, "Just remember, babe, you're there to screw Darcy...don't fall in love."
"Love?! Me?! Impossible!" laughed Lisa.
"Yeah, babe, but be careful. Darcy is different," said Wickie.
"Oh, is he?" Lisa raised her eyebrows and laughed. "Well, he's in for the ride of his life!"
Wickie nodded, smiled, then left. Lisa sighed and sat down on her bed. Sometimes she wondered what her life had become. How she'd met her boss Wickie and how'd she transformed from the innocent Elizabeth Bennett to the ruthless Lisa who had as many names as identities and whose life was a never-ending gamble.
Chapter 2
Lisa rushed for the elevator with quick steps. She was already 45 minutes late for her photo shoot. She had dressed in a more conservative, classy manner for the photo shoot. Models needed to have class and elegance and Lisa knew she could pull it off. Of course, she thought bitterly, she did not choose to be crass. If it were up to her, she would be elegant everyday, but with the life fortune had given her, she couldn't afford to pamper herself like that.
As she made her way to Room 1304, Lisa wondered what this Darcy guy looked like. She had not been able to dig up a single picture of him. He was a very private person and did not appear in any of the society columns. But Lisa didn't bother too much. She would meet him soon enough, of that she was sure. And suddenly, she felt a flicker of emotion stir in her as she thought of how dispassionately she was contemplating on destroying a perfectly respectable man. But it was a moment of weakness. Lisa quelled the desire to leave and walked on. Elizabeth Bennett was not dead completely...but if Lisa had her way, she would be soon.
She walked up to the secretary who saw her and said, "Mr. Bingley has been waiting for you, Ms. Benz."
"Yes," smiled Lisa. "I know."
"Studio 5, the second door on your right, Ms. Benz," the secretary informed her.
"Lisa," she smiled extending her hand. "And you are...?"
"Charlotte Lucas," the secretary shook her hand. "Now if you would please go to the studio..."
Lisa found Studio 5 without any difficulty. She entered it and quickly found Charlie.
"I'm sorry I am late," Lisa purred, smiling. "The traffic today was horrendous."
"It's okay," Charlie smiled. "Let's get going, then?"
Rick Fitzwilliam, the photographer appeared, gave directions and a bustle of activity followed. The light crew adjusted the lighting in the studio and the make-up people went to work on Lisa. Within minutes, Lisa was ready for the shoot. Rick was an excellent photographer, instructing Lisa and telling her what pose and expression he wanted exactly. Lisa smiled and did as she was told, knowing that she was doing great. In the middle of the shoot, she caught Charlie talking to someone from the corner of her eyes. It was a richly dressed, dark-haired man. Before she could get a good look, he was gone. Lisa thought no more of him.
"Okay, wrap up!" called Rick, after about 20 minutes.
Lisa relaxed and sat down on a chair, breathing heavily. Rick came up to her.
"That was very good, Lisa," he smiled at her.
"Thanks, Rick," Lisa said. "I try."
"Yes, I could see that," Rick told her. "You are very beautiful, you know. You have come to the right place."
"Why, thank you," Lisa demurred.
Rick smiled, "You'll definitely get the job, believe me."
Lisa grinned, "Well that would be just super!"
"And why is that?" asked Rick, stepping a little closer.
"'Cuz I will get to see you!" Lisa laughed.
1 week later
"Do you feel like a swim?" Rick asked.
Lisa looked at him, "Why not? It's so hot!"
"Then, let's go!"
Rick and Lisa left the studio to go to the company pool in the gym. Lisa had been hired by Charlie Bingley and she had joined the models working for Pemberley Fashions. They were working for a charity fashion show coming up in 2 weeks and work was hectic. In the meantime, Lisa had become "friends" with Rick, who obviously enjoyed her company. But she had not met William Darcy yet. All in good time, she told herself.
Lisa changed into a quite revealing bikini and joined Rick at the pool.
"Wow!" he exclaimed. "You look fabulous!"
"Thank you," Lisa pretended to be shy.
They swam for a bit and then, Lisa got hungry. They got out of the pool, found a table and Rick went to get something to eat. Lisa dried her hair, looking around. There weren't many people there...just some employees. Pemberley was a big business with fashion just one aspect of it. The entire building housed many of its branches.
Rick had been gone for sometime and Lisa got restless. She got up from her chair, frowning, intending to follow him. She was too busy thinking and didn't see where she was going. As a result, she bumped straight into a tall man.
"Excuse me," he said haughtily.
Lisa looked up and found herself staring into a pair of the darkest eyes she'd ever seen. Dark, wet, disheveled hair, a firm set jaw and a toned, muscled chest. This man looked like something out of 'The Bold and the Beautiful'. For once in her life, Lisa was speechless.
"I'm sorry," she muttered.
"You should be," said the mysterious man and walked away.
Lisa was shocked by his rudeness and she turned to look at him. He was carrying drinks to his table where a pale, auburn-haired woman was seated. Lisa stared at the woman whose face lit up with a smile when she saw the man coming. A very powerful feeling of jealousy stirred within her as she watched the couple. Lisa could not understand it. Who cared about the drop-dead gorgeous and extremely rude man anyway?
Lisa was still staring at them when Rick came up behind her, "Hey! What're you looking at?"
"Them," Lisa pointed shamelessly. "Do you know who they are?"
"Do I?!" laughed Rick as if it were the funniest thing in the world. "That is the man who employs us all...William Darcy!"
Lisa gasped. She didn't know what she had expected, but she surely hadn't expected this. "And the woman...?" She almost dreaded the answer for some strange reason.
"That," said Rick. "is his fiancée and associate, Anne deBourgh."
Chapter 3
"Lisa? Still with me?!" Rick waved his hands in front of her eyes.
"Huh? Sorry," muttered Lisa, detaching her eyes from the couple still seated on the table. "I'm not hungry anymore. Let's get out of here."
"Okay," Rick gave her a questioning look, but said no more.
Lisa went in to change with her head full of one man. William Darcy. Even in her wildest dreams, she had not imagined him like he was. She didn't know what she had imagined. A frail, old man of 50 years or more, perhaps. After all, he was president of a huge company. Why had she never entertained the chance that Darcy might be an attractive, young man? And did it even make a difference? Lisa had "worked" with attractive men before and she'd never let that keep her from her job. And she prided herself on that. And yet, something about the arrogant William Darcy disturbed her as if it was going to be a fatal choice to seduce him.
Rick was waiting for Lisa when she came out, dressed. It was obvious that she had something on her mind as she didn't say a word. Finally, as they reached the elevator, Rick said, "Hey Lisa..."
"Yeah?"
"Tell me what's wrong?"
"What?!" her attention snapped back and she looked at Rick.
"Something is wrong, I can see it in your eyes," said Rick. "What is it?"
"Nothing, Rick, nothing," Lisa attempted to smile. "Nothing is wrong."
"You are lying," stated Rick. "Why?"
"Look, get over it already?!" snapped Lisa and looked away. She found Rick's arms curl around her waist.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I won't bother you." He kissed her cheeks softly.
"Good." She said. The elevator stopped and she rapidly walked out with Rick close at her heels.
When Lisa entered the studio, she saw the designer, Caroline Bingley, Charlie's sister, waiting for her.
"Oh, there you are?!" her voice dripped with sarcasm. "Has her highness decided it was time she graced us with her presence? I should be grateful, right?"
Lisa flashed Caroline one of her looks, but said nothing. Rick hurried to explain. "I'm sorry, Caroline, it was my fault. I took Lisa for a swim. It won't happen again."
"It had better not," snapped Caroline. "The charity show is in 2 weeks and we have no time to waste." She looked at Lisa. "Maybe you're new to this game, so you don't know, honey...but in the fashion industry, those of us who waste time, find success just "swims" away."
If looks could kill, Caroline would be dead with the look Lisa was giving her. "Thanks for your insight, Caroline," she said. "I don't know what I'd do without you." With that, she stomped into the dressing room to change into her costume.
40 minutes later
"God, Stacey, at least look like you're not going throw up. Smile!" Caroline shouted at a half-witted model. "No, no, Tiffany...god gave you brains, so use it! You are AFTER Stacey..."
"Caroline? Everything alright?" a quiet voice from behind her startled Caroline.
She jumped. "Oh, William!!! How good of you to come. Everything's FINE...fabulous."
"Good," said William. "This may just be a charity event, but I want Pemberley to shine. No glitches."
"Of course not!" cooed Caroline, smiling. Just then, the next model came out and Caroline turned to see her. It was Lisa.
Dressed in a virtually see-through creation of a pale yellow gown with sequins, lace and feathers, Lisa looked divine. The gown was called "Innocence", but was far from it by the seductive way it clung to Lisa's curve, hugging her, yet leaving a lot for imagination. Her wild hair was pulled back and caught in a simple broach, yet few tendrils escaped and settled on her long neck.
Lisa walked causally to the end of the runway, smiled lazily and licked her lips. Her eyes locked with that of William Darcy and she held the gaze for a second. Then, she abruptly turned around and walked away. Seeing none of the exchange, Caroline just said,
"I personally designed that gown. Its material is - "
"Who is that?" asked William, rudely cutting her off.
"Oh, that's a new model," said Caroline. "Lisa Benz. Charlie hired her, but I don't think she's that good. Sure, she may have the figure of a model, but her attitude...well, it just doesn't cut it. She has a lazy look about her, and - "
One again, William interrupted her. "I like her a lot. Send her to my office."
"But William!" Caroline was shocked. "I assure you, there are several better-looking girls. Lisa is not, by any means, the best."
"I don't care," said William decidedly. He started to leave, but turned at the door. "I want her." And, then, he left, leaving Caroline to wonder about his meaning. She cursed Lisa under her breath. She could handle an Anne, but Lisa? That was another story.
Lisa waited outside William Darcy's office with her heart beating wildly. She had never lacked confidence before, but somehow, the thought of meeting William Darcy terrified her. In all her years as a "freelance" worker for George Wickham, she had never been intimidated by any man. But there was always a first time.
After waiting for 15 minutes, the secretary told Lisa that she could go in. Lisa thanked her and walked to the door. She wiped her sweaty hands, told herself that she was lucky to meet her target so quickly, and turned the knob. Once inside, Lisa stopped and gasped. She had known that Darcy was a rich man, but this beyond anything she had imagined. She office was richly decorated with antique furniture and priceless paintings adorned its walls. The carpet was unmistakably pure Persian and the view from the large glass window was fabulous. And yet, the owner was nowhere in sight.
Lisa shifted on her feet uncomfortably, then decided to enjoy the view from the window as she waited. Lisa walked up to the window and saw the New York skyline for the umpteenth time. But she had never seen it like this. The sun had set and sky had an orange tinge to it. From the height, the people and cars down below appeared no bigger than ants. Lisa could do nothing but look and wonder.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" a voice interrupted Lisa's flow of thoughts. Surprised, she turned around, only to stare into the now-familiar dark eyes.
"Yes," murmured Lisa and stepped back.
William smiled. "I always take time to admire the view whenever I can. But I am a busy man."
Lisa said nothing. She didn't know why she was here. What did this man have in mind for her? She couldn't tell. Did he remember meeting her at the pool? Maybe not, probably not. But what did he want?
"Sit down, Ms. Benz," William directed her. She did so, wordlessly.
He went to a side table and emptied a drink from the decanter. "Would you like some brandy?" he asked her.
"No, thanks," said Lisa, more mystified than ever. What did he want?
"Sure? It's very good," he said, helping himself to some. He ambled over to the giant chair behind the desk and sat down. "I heard that you are new to this company, Ms. Benz."
"Yes, Mr. Darcy," said Lisa. God, he looked stunning when he smiled at her like that. His black hair was still damp from the pool and had been slicked back. Lisa was diverted.
"We are very fortunate, then," smiled William. "Such a beautiful woman had many offers, no doubt."
Lisa cringed when she thought of all the "offers" she got. But she said, "Thank you, Mr. Darcy. I am pleased to be here." Am I?
"I am glad to hear that," William inclined his head. "You have beautiful hair, Ms. Benz."
Lisa blushed. She found herself staring into his dark eyes again. They were so deep, teasing, sparkling that Lisa felt like she was lost in them. Distractedly, she said, "Um...thank you."
William laughed as if he knew what was going through her mind. Lisa cringed inwardly. No man had ever laughed at her before. William Darcy was an arrogant jerk, Lisa decided angrily. He was so sure of himself. It angered Lisa. She was supposed to be the seductive one, the one in-charge. Instead, this man was twisting her around like she was some damned Caroline. She had had enough.
"What's so damned funny?!" Lisa demanded. His eyes were piercing her and it unnerved Lisa.
"I'm sorry," he wiped his eyes. "The expression on your face...well, it just reminded me of someone." He was serious now. "I'm sorry if I offended you."
Lisa's face softened. "It's okay."
William relaxed. "Okay, good." He smiled at her again and Lisa felt herself melt. This would not do. He was playing with her! Lisa could not see what he was trying to do.
"Mr. Darcy," she said. "Can you tell me why I am here?"
"Oh," he said. "Fine...let's get down to business." He picked up some papers and handed them to Lisa. He, then, said, "Pemberley Fashions needs a new cover-girl for the next wing of advertisements. We have to do some promotional tours for the Paris and Milan crowd. I've been looking for someone for a long time and I found her today. You."
Lisa shuddered as she thought of what those words would mean in a different situation. All this time, she'd thought he wanted her for some personal reason, but she was wrong. William Darcy was a cold businessman and that was all.
He went on about the job and the duties it entailed. At the end, "So...would you be willing to take this position?"
Lisa knew she had to. It was the only way to finish her mission. "Yes."
"Great!" said William enthusiastically. He got up and extended his hand, which Lisa grasped. His hands were warm and big and strong. Lisa shuddered and quickly withdrew them. She looked into his eyes again and held the gaze. He was about to say something, when a noise was heard and someone walked in.
"William darling!"
Lisa turned her head sharply and recognized the dainty woman as the one at the pool. She turned to look at William, who was smiling. "Anne!" He greeted her and gave her a kiss. Then, putting his hand on her waist, he said to her, "Anne, I'd like you to meet our new cover girl, Lisa Benz."
Anne smiled, "Hello, Lisa."
Lisa smiled falsely. "Hello."
Then, instantly forgetting about her, Anne turned to William. "Oh, mother called today and wanted to know about the wedding date. I said we hadn't decided yet, but she was so angry. You know..." She went on and on.
Lisa muttered, "I'll show myself out." As she left the room, she glanced back and saw William embrace Anne. He saw Lisa and smiled. Lisa did not, could not, return it.
That night
Lisa was on the phone. "Why didn't you tell me he was engaged?"
Wickie said, "Because, babe, it didn't matter."
Lisa said, "But...well, it doesn't matter, but...oh never mind."
Wickie said, "What's on your mind, babe? Having trouble?"
"No," lied Lisa.
"Good," laughed Wickie. "That's the best thing about you, you don't have no scruples!"
Lisa laughed along with him, but she didn't feel the mirth.
"So Darcy-boy wants you as his cover girl!" said Wickie. "So much the better. I knew you could do it."
"Yeah," said Lisa. "It was no sweat." Then, she said, "But why do you want him destroyed, Wickie? He's not all bad..."
"I'll tell you the whole story later, babe," said Wickie. "At his funeral!"
Lisa shuddered. "Right."
She hung up soon after. Talking to Wickie put things in perspective. She no right to feel anything. She would do her job and that was that. To hell with William Darcy and his haunting eyes. There was no room for emotion. Lisa knew that Wickie was depending on her and she couldn't let him down. Not after all he'd done for her...after that horrible incident when she was still the innocent Elizabeth Bennett.
Chapter 4
The next morning, Lisa went to work with her thoughts focussed on her mission. She hadn't expected William Darcy to be so flirty, but so much the better. It made the completion of her mission easier, never mind her heart. To own the truth, she didn't even know what her heart wanted. So, she decided to quell any emotions she might feel and go on with what her mind told her to. Any kind of emotional involvement would be unhealthy. And Lisa was determined not to fail.
With those thoughts, Lisa entered the elevator, not even paying attention to the only other occupant. It wasn't until she heard the slightly mocking, all-to-familiar voice did she look up.
"Not even a 'hello', Ms. Benz?"
Startled, Lisa managed to say. "Um...I didn't see you, Mr. Darcy."
William smiled as if he knew what was on her mind, but didn't say anything. Lisa found all her resolves melt away as she became extraordinarily tongue-tied. This will not do, she told herself. You can't let your feelings come in way of the mission. Yet, she couldn't ignore the undeniable stirrings deep within her by the mere sight of William Darcy; his firm-set jaw, provocative grin and mocking eyes.
"So..." she finally managed to say. "I hear you're engaged to Ms. Anne deBourgh."
The mischievous grin vanished as William said cautiously, "Yes, that's right."
Lisa went on boldly. "Why?" she challenged him with her eyes.
"Because," said William coldly. "I love her."
Lisa felt a pang of jealousy, which she dismissed as her concern for the success of her mission given the circumstances. But she didn't hesitate to say, with an impish gleam in her eyes. "Oh really? I don't believe you."
At that moment, the elevator stopped at Lisa's floor and she exited quickly not daring to look back. If she had, she would have seen the look of extreme surprise and outrage on the handsome face of William Darcy; something that could only occur if her words had struck an element of truth.
Lisa was congratulating herself on the way she'd handled the situation. It would make Darcy sit up and take notice of her. She didn't flatter herself that any attentions he had given her resulted from anything but commercial interest. She was to be an important tool in Pemberley Fashion House's advertisements and thus, had to be treated well. Darcy felt nothing for her beyond that. And why should he?
Lisa reported to the studio for the charity ball practice. Caroline was her usual curt self, but she was even ruder to Lisa for reasons soon revealed.
"So, Ms. Benz," she started. "How did the interview with William go?"
Lisa smiled her sugar smile. "Excellent! Thank you for recommending me, Caroline."
Caroline was definitely nettled. "Why did he want you?"
"Oh, wouldn't you like to know," muttered Lisa. "Let me go and change. I wouldn't want to let my success swim away!" With that, she left for the changing rooms leaving a very unhappy woman behind her.
1 hour, 45 minutes later
The practice had been suspended for a short break. The models went to refresh themselves with the exception of Lisa, who was sitting by herself, contemplating her conversation with William earlier in the morning. Maybe it hadn't been such a good idea after all. William might take offense at her words. Maybe he was truly in love with Ms. deBourgh. Lisa shuddered at that thought. Somehow she couldn't accept that.
Suddenly, the quiet of the deserted studio was disturbed by a voice, "Hey!"
"Rick," Lisa acknowledged the newcomer, venturing a smile.
Rick grinned and sat down next to her. "You didn't tell me the good news!"
Lisa smiled and said, "I didn't think you would be interested."
"Wouldn't I?!" laughed Rick. "But that's great news! You must have really caught Darcy's eyes for him to do that. The whole building is talking about the new model who cast a spell on Darcy and landed herself a cushy position."
Lisa just nodded. Rick continued, "Of course, people get jealous and start rumors of 'stuff' you had to do to get the job. I told them it was all BS since I knew you and wouldn't do anything of the kind!"
Lisa smiled her "thanks" but couldn't help but feel sorry for the simple-minded guy who had such infinite faith in her. If he only knew what was the "real" her, he might be shocked, scandalized. Lisa also felt a little guilty at having used him for getting into Pemberley, but it was a passing pang. Lisa had learnt early on from her mother that men were very weak creatures. They were weak-minded and egotistical, reveling in their apparent "strength." Any intelligent woman knew how to mold and use men for her benefit by simply exercising her powers and meanwhile, the unsuspecting men gloried themselves powerful figures. It was an excellent arrangement as far as Lisa was concerned. Why not let them fancy themselves mighty while she used them and moved on.
Rick was still talking when Lisa returned her attention to him. "....so, anyway, how did you get the position?"
Lisa said, "He saw me walk down the runway and liked what he saw, I suppose."
"Of course he did!" smiled Rick. "Good for you, Lisa! I told you, you would make it big, didn't I?"
Lisa smiled graciously. Poor Rick fancied he had something to do with her fortune. The little fool! He was very sweet, really, but just like all the others, Lisa decided. She only hoped that he didn't fall for her. She would simply have to break his heart.
Just then, two other pairs of footsteps were heard entering the studio and within seconds, Caroline and Anne deBourgh happened upon Lisa and Rick.
"There she is," said Caroline.
Anne said. "Hi Lisa. I was looking all over for you!"
Lisa cringed. The mere sight of the pale Anne deBourgh repulsed her. She wondered, as she had a hundred times, what possessed Darcy to get himself engaged to her. But she said politely, "Oh, were you? Why?"
Anne smiled, "Because we have to discuss a lot of things about your new position. I was telling Caroline all about it."
Lisa exchanged glances with Caroline and smiled smugly.
"So, I was thinking," said Anne. "Why don't you come to my office once you're done here?"
"Sure thing," said Lisa.
"Good!" said Anne and with a friendly "goodbye", she was gone.
1 hour later
Lisa walked confidently to Anne's office and asked the secretary to show her in. 2 minutes later, the secretary told her that Ms. deBourgh was expecting her. Lisa thanked her and knocked on the door.
"Come in," came a soft voice.
Lisa went in and stopped, in surprise. Anne deBourgh was waiting for her, all right, but with her was seated the one person Lisa wasn't prepared to see...William Darcy. Lisa composed herself and kept going in.
She smiled and said, "Well, here I am." She avoided eye contact with William, but she could feel his eyes on her. She looked straight at Anne and directed her remark at her.
"Here you are, Ms. Benz," smiled Anne. "Good, let's get started, then. William and I have been discussing this and we think that the best way to approach this is...." She went on, talking about the contract and other things, her ideas on how to promote and project Lisa's image.
Lisa listened intently, marveling at how intelligent and efficient Anne seemed. She might not be very pretty or attractive, but she was a shrewd, bright businesswoman and that impressed Lisa. That was probably what impressed William, too, she thought with a glance at him. He was engrossed in her words. They would make a good couple, she thought, but she would, in all probability, destroy this relationship. It chilled Lisa to think what she was planning on doing. But it had to be done.
Presently, Anne stopped talking as the secretary buzzed her. An important client was on the line. Anne excused herself to take the conversation in the other room, leaving Lisa and William in uncomfortable silence. Lisa was aware that he was looking at her thoughtfully as if trying to figure her out and it unnerved her. But she resolved to just ignore him...for the present.
He said finally, "I've been thinking about what you said to me this morning..."
Lisa knew it was coming. She now regretted being so rash. This would have been better said when they were acquainted. But her feelings had overwhelmed her and Lisa could kick herself.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said it," Lisa forced herself to look at him. His eyes had an inscrutable expression and he was regarding her with sort of an interest that he would give to an engaging problem.
"Why did you say that?" he asked softly. "You hardly know me. How can you judge me?"
"I said I was sorry," said Lisa, desperately hoping that Anne would come back.
"No, that's not what I want to hear," he said. "Why did you say what you said? It has bothered me the whole morning."
"Look, Mr. Darcy," Lisa said with a confidence she did not feel. "It was one of those times when you say something you don't mean. I didn't mean anything by it...okay?"
William looked at her with piercing eyes and a small smile came across his face. "I don't believe you," he repeated her words from the elevator. He was about to say more as a teasing grin re-appeared on his face, but Lisa was spared from it by Anne's coming back into the room.
Anne said, "Well, now that that's over..." She continued where she had left off and the meeting went on for another hour.
Then, Lisa remembered that she had to be somewhere. She finished the talks with Anne and left. As she glanced back, she saw William look at her. She smiled at him and he smiled back before he bent forward to kiss Anne deBourgh. Lisa fumed inwardly and banged the door shut.
45 minutes later; St. James Hospital; Psychiatric Ward # 2
Lisa inhaled deeply, preparing herself for what was to come and knocked on the door. "Can I come in?" she said.
"Yes," came a gentle voice from within and Lisa went in. The blonde young woman sitting on the bed smiled at seeing Lisa. The ward consisted of a simple bed, a table, a chair and a closet. The bare minimum. The woman was reading a magazine which she put down on seeing Lisa.
"I brought you some flowers," said Lisa, smiling, putting the roses in a vase on the table next to the bed.
"They're lovely!" exclaimed the woman, smiling brightly. "Roses are my favorite."
"I know," said Lisa, brushing away a stray tear.
"Oh, you do?" a confused look came across the woman's face. She puzzled over the fact for a while, then gave it up and said, "What's your name, dear?"
Lisa sighed unhappily, sat down at the foot of the bed and said, "Elizabeth."
"Oh." For a second, a flicker of recognition appeared on her face, but it was gone as quickly as it came and was replaced by the ever-present vacant stare.
Lisa watched all this with pain and managed to say, "How are you doing?"
"Fine," answered the woman cheerfully. "I went for a walk today, but they brought me back in. They're very mean to me sometimes, but I like Gina. Gina is very good. She brings me chocolates. I love chocolates, you know."
"I know," Lisa choked back sobs.
"Oh, you know?" she said again. "Why did you come?"
"To see you," said Lisa. "I wanted to see you."
"Oh...why?" Again the slightly puzzled look as if something wasn't the way it should be.
"Because..." Lisa thought of what to say. "Because I wanted to see if you had everything you needed."
"Oh." The answer seemed to satisfy her. Then, she said, "I want to go home."
Lisa reached out and held her hand. "You will...soon, I promise."
The woman seemed to take comfort in that pronouncement. She closed her eyes and appeared to have dozed off. Lisa was used to that. She often fell asleep in the middle of a conversation. Lisa studied her face and sighed unhappily. Her condition hadn't improved for a long time. At least she talked now, but that was all. Suddenly, she started moving restlessly on the bed and screamed out in agony.
"Oh god, daddy! Help!! Someone help us! Lizzy!!!!!!"
The next instant, Lisa was at her side, but the cries had subsided and the woman opened her eyes. "Who are you?"
Lisa shook her head in despair and was about to say something, when the door opened and a young woman doctor came in.
"I heard her cries. Is she alright?" said the doctor.
"Yes, Dr. ...Darcy," Lisa read the nametag. Darcy? Strange...I wonder. "She cried out in her sleep."
"Oh, she must be having that dream again," said Dr. Darcy. "You're her...?"
"Sister," Lisa extended her hand. "Lisa."
"I'm her new doctor...call me Gina," she smiled.
"Is she any better?" asked Lisa, glancing at her sleeping form.
"Well..." Gina said. "Her amnesia doesn't seem to have changed and her mental condition is not stable...but she has some good days and bad. I really can't say."
Lisa nodded.
Gina said, "Well...I have to go. Take care."
"Thank you," said Lisa. Darcy...hmmm. Could she? She thought no more of it.
Lisa spent half and hour in the hospital talking to her sister. In the end, she got up to leave. Her sister was sleeping again. Lisa could no longer stop her tears from flowing. She wiped them quietly and left the room, stopping at the door and whispering,
"Hang in there, Jane. You're all that I have left."
With one last parting look, she was gone.
Chapter 5 Posted on Monday, 23 August 1999
William Darcy stood at his office window with his arm resting across his chest, staring at the early morning sun. He was a man accustomed to having his own way and found that he seldom had to brook any opposition. The smallest of his whims and fancies were catered to and his slightest wish was fulfilled. In essence, William Darcy did not know anyone or anything that challenged or puzzled him. That is, anyone or anything except Lisa Benz.
For some inexplicable reason, William found himself pondering on that one, unimportant model. She was a great puzzle. There was something very elusive, unobtainable about her. Mystery surrounded her. Who was she? How did she just happen into his life like that? He had asked Charlie about her, who said that Lisa applied for the position and got the job. But William wasn't satisfied. Lisa was different. She was something else. She challenged him with one look and surprised him with her words. She was an enigma and he had to figure her out...one way or the other.
"William, darling, what's the matter?" a voice said from behind him.
William turned around in surprise. "Anne." He looked at her, guiltily, hoping she wouldn't guess his thoughts.
"What is it?" smiled Anne, as she came upon him. "You look...well, you look as if something was bothering you."
"No, nothing's wrong," William lied. "I was just thinking about the new deal with Benson's."
"Worrying about that again?!" Anne laughed. "William Darcy, you are incorrigible! And that's why I love you..."
William smiled in return and surrendered to Anne's tender embrace, all the while thinking that Lisa was right. He did not love Anne. He had known that for sometime, but had been weary to admit it to himself. But Lisa's comments on the elevator the other day made him realize that he didn't love Anne, never had. The question was, what was he going to do about it?
Lisa sat on the chair with all the other models around her. The briefing for the upcoming fashion show was in process, but Lisa found her mind wandering. She did not, could not pay attention to the speaker. Her mind and energies were concentrated on William Darcy and how to proceed. She had caught his attention; of that she was certain. But there had to be a way to keep that attention and use it to her advantage. For that, Lisa needed to learn more of the man himself, so that she could find opportunities of getting close to him. But there was a problem? Where could she find his ready bio and then, it hit her! Who better to learn important insightful facts about William Darcy from than the woman who loved him! Lisa smiled to herself. It was going to be a beautiful day.
"Why are you smiling, sweetheart?" Rick slipped into the empty seat next to her.
"No reason," grinned Lisa, obviously pleased with herself.
"You look very beautiful when you smile, do you know that?" Rick whispered.
"Why, thank you!" Lisa pretended to be embarrassed. In fact, she had been told the same thing many times over by many different men and she really didn't care. But she had to keep a good relationship with Rick. He might prove useful.
"This is so boring...," said Rick. "Say, you know all this stuff about the show already. Wanna get out of here?"
"Sure thing!" said Lisa enthusiastically and followed Rick quietly out of the studio. Once outside, Lisa giggled. "This takes me way back...seventh grade, actually. I used to slip out of math class just like that."
Rick smiled. "As long as those memories are pleasant..."
"Yes, very pleasant...," Lisa's eyes were distant and sparkling. "I can picture it right now... walking home with Jane...my mom...dad...they'd ground me for being so troublesome...very pleasant memories." A few tears rolled down Lisa's cheeks, which she quickly wiped.
"I'm sorry, Lisa...are you alright?" Rick asked, concerned.
"Yeah...," said Lisa. "I'm being childish...I'm sorry."
"No, no, it's okay. I touched a sore spot," said Rick. "Do you want to talk about it?"
"My family?!" asked Lisa. "You want to know about my family?" Lisa was touched. She had not expected that. It had been her experience that every man wanted something from her. She had never met with a man who expressed the slightest interest in her, as a person. They all wanted the same thing from her and most times, she gave them what they wanted before getting her job done. But Rick was different.
"Of course!" smiled Rick. "I want to know all about you..."
"Oh Rick!!" Lisa hugged him impulsively.
She held him close to her and closed her eyes. His arms were strong around her waist and he pulled her close to him. Lisa felt safe in Rick's arms. He made her feel protected and sheltered. She needed someone like that in her life...a strong man who'd protect her. She needed a father figure, having lost her own very tragically. But, she was also aware that Rick viewed this closeness they shared in a very different light. Slowly, she released him. She looked up to his face. His eyes were smiling, sparkling, dancing with happiness and at that moment Lisa realized that she was playing shamelessly with Rick's emotions and that if he ever found out the truth about her, it would hurt him very much. But what was she to do?
"Rick, I..." Lisa started to say.
"Lisa...let's go someplace we can talk," said Rick. And he was right. The main hallway was not the place for an intimate conversation.
Lisa hesitated, then said. "Okay, fine. Let's go."
Rick smiled and extended his hand. "Do you trust me?"
Lisa gave him her hand. "Yes, I do." And she did.
"Then, close your eyes and come with me," said Rick. "I want to show you something."
Lisa giggled. "Okay, Rick...whatever you say!"
She closed her eyes and submitted herself to Rick's power. He smiled, leaned, gave her a quick kiss on her nose and led her down the hall. He went into the elevator and it closed.
"Where are we going?" asked Lisa, her eyes closed.
"You'll find out," said Rick, mysteriously.
The elevator stopped and Lisa felt cool air hit her face. She was tempted to open her eyes, but Rick put his hands over them.
"Don't look yet," he said.
They walked for a few yards and Lisa felt herself getting excited. They were out in the open, possibly on the roof and she was impatient to know what exactly Rick wanted to show her. Rick felt her impatience and placed his hand on her waist, pulling her close to him. Strangely, that calmed Lisa and then, Rick stopped and said,
"Open your eyes."
Lisa opened them and gasped. Rick said, "I give you...the world."
They were on the roof of the Pemberley building, which was the one of the highest structures in New York. The view from the top was breathless. The New York Skyline looked majestic and regal, imposing even. The clear, blue sky seemed vast, expansive, never-ending. The white clouds scattered over the horizon appeared within reach. The cool, summer breeze blew slowly, but surely. The entire effect was calm, quiet, picturesque and romantic.
Lisa was at loss of words. "This is so beautiful, Rick. I don't know what to say."
"I come here when I want to be by myself. It soothes and calms me and I find myself refreshed," said Rick. "No one else seems to value this place much, so it's very quiet. I have never shared it with anyone else before...that is, before you."
Lisa blushed under Rick's passionate gaze and looked down. "Thank you, Rick...for sharing this with me."
"It's my pleasure, believe me," smiled Rick. He gazed at her earnestly for a few moments, then recollecting himself, said, "Well...you were going to tell me about your family...remember?"
"Oh yes!" exclaimed Lisa. "What do you want to know?"
"Everything," whispered Rick.
Lisa leaned on the roof wall and looked at the horizon. She said, "Well...my father was a doctor at the Chief Medical Examiner's office and my mom stayed at home. I had 4 sisters...Jane, Mary, Kitty and Lydia...I was the second one to Jane..." Lisa paused, looked at Rick, then continued.
"We had a big house in New Jersey. It was close to the city, but not too close, as my dad always said. I loved it there. It was a small neighborhood and my sisters and I explored every inch of it. We knew everyone and everyone knew us. We all grew up together with the neighbors' children. I loved my dad a lot...I was his favorite. He loved books and he read to me every night when I was a little girl. My mom...well, I loved her too, though she could be difficult sometimes..."
Lisa paused. "And one day...they were all gone."
"What do you mean...gone?" Rick prompted her.
Lisa couldn't tell him the truth. It would be revealing too much. She had never talked this frankly with anyone before and it felt strange.
"They died...in an accident," Lisa repressed her tears. She looked at Rick. "I'm sorry...I can't talk about it...it hurts too much."
"Of course...I understand," Rick said.
He watched her with compassion. Then, Lisa could repress her tears no more and started crying. It felt good to let all her pent-up emotions flow. Rick wrapped his arms around her and comforted her. Lisa snuggled closer, reveling in Rick's strength. She marveled at his patience in dealing with her. She had never met someone as sensitive as him. She could smell his masculine musk and it soothed her. In Rick's arms, Lisa felt all her hurt and anguish fade away. She lost herself in his embrace feeling thousand inexplicable emotions that a were a combination of wonder and quiet contentment.
Neither of them was aware how long they stood thus. It could have been a few seconds to many minutes. Time was no longer a factor in their sense of unity, of togetherness. While Lisa regarded it as a symbol of their friendship and solidarity, Rick perceived it to be a tribute to their mutual, passionate love. At any rate, they did not part ways until the sudden rapid steps signaled that someone else was approaching.
"Oh excuse me! I did not mean to interrupt," said the figure.
"Mr. Darcy!" exclaimed Lisa, jumping out of Rick's embrace.
William stared at Lisa, then at Rick, then back at Lisa, forming his own conclusion based on their situation. "I'm sorry," he said, decomposed. "Please...carry on." With that, he turned on his heels and disappeared as rapidly as he had come.
Lisa shook her head in despair. "Oh, what will he think now!"
Rick, not understanding, touched Lisa's arms, hoping to recapture their former intimacy, but the magic was gone. Lisa looked at Rick and realized that she leading the poor man on. She smiled a sad smile.
"I have to go," she said abruptly.
Rick looked hurt. "Now?"
"Yes, I'm sorry," Lisa quickly walked away, then on second thoughts went back to Rick and kissed him on his cheeks. "Thank you...for everything." With one last glance, she left the rooftop, leaving a bewildered Rick to figure out what had went wrong.
As Lisa walked for her destination, she cursed herself for being side-tracked, for going with Rick for being caught by William Darcy and for being so emotional. There were a thousand things to berate herself with. She had no clue what had happened to her, but this afternoon, she had been emotionally vulnerable and had been weaker than she'd normally be. For some reason, she had sought comfort and had got it...in the arms of Rick Fitzwilliam. The fact that she still possessed such human frailties disturbed her. Lisa had thought that all her hardship had insulated her against such weaknesses. Maybe she had been wrong to assume that she was safe from such outbursts of emotion. She vowed never to let that happen again.
Lisa concentrated on the mission and focussed on what she would say. She approached Anne De Bourgh's office and asked the secretary for admittance. Moments later, she was inside the office and was facing Anne, who was seated on the swivel chair.
"Ms. Benz! What can I do for you?" said Anne, amiably.
"It's Lisa," said Lisa with a friendliness she did not feel for this woman.
"Then you must call me Anne," smiled Anne. "Sit down, please."
Lisa took a seat and said. "Well...I was thinking about the advertising project and I had some ideas on how to approach my image..." Lisa droned on about her ideas and concerns. Anne was helpful, listening and responding as required.
"....oh, thank you!" Lisa was saying, about half an hour later. "You have been very helpful."
"I hope so, Lisa," Anne said. "I certainly hope so."
"I have had only good experiences since joining Pemberley," said Lisa conversationally. "I feel so 'at-home' and I think part of it is because of you and Mr. Darcy. You put me at ease."
"Yes, William is very good at that," smiled Anne. "He can be very charming."
Okay, good, keep talking about William. "Yes, he appeared so. I think you two are very well matched," Lisa choked those words out. "Btw, congratulations! When is the wedding?"
"We don't know," sighed Anne. "William and I both have packed schedules and it's hard to pick a date."
"Oh, that must be killing you both!" said Lisa with fake sympathy.
"Yeah," nodded Anne. "But we try to spend as much time together as possible."
"I'm sure," smiled Lisa. "So, what do for fun...the opera, theater...?"
"I love the opera, but William doesn't care much for that," said Anne. "But he loves the theater and art. In fact, tomorrow afternoon, he's going to see the Van Gogh exhibition at the Gallery."
Bingo! "Oh really?" Lisa said lightly. "And you won't be going?"
"Me? Oh no!" Anne smiled. "I have appointments the entire day."
"Oh well!" Lisa got up. "I've taken too much of your time. Bye!"
"Bye!" smiled Anne.
What a sucker! Thought Lisa as she left. Anne De Bourgh was probably one of the nicest persons Lisa knew and yet she hated her. Lisa didn't know why, but she did. Anne's very essence irritated Lisa. She could not imagine that woman with William Darcy...it was too much of a horrible image to envision. Lisa felt no guilt in having used Anne like she had. It was all part of her job and she had stopped feeling guilty for it long ago.
The next afternoon, _____ Art Gallery
William Darcy prided himself in being somewhat of a connoisseur of art. He often attended exhibitions and auctions and enjoyed the beauty and serenity of the art gallery. He had developed a taste for them quite young because his mother was fond of art. He used to come with her to galleries from an early age. And it was a habit which he never grew out of. So, of course, when the Van Gogh exhibition came to town, William had to visit it, but he now regretted it because of the unimaginable throng of people in the gallery.
It seemed to him that every class of people had come to the gallery simply because it was the place to be. The Van Gogh exhibition had made such a splash everywhere that even those who did not appreciate the artwork, went to see it so that they would not be left out of the loop. William knew that half the people in the gallery had no concept of Van Gogh's talent or genius, but they pretended to be dazzled by it. It disgusted and annoyed him, but he tried to ignore it so that he could enjoy himself.
As William wandered in the hallway, he suddenly bumped into someone. Not bothering to look down, he simply said, "Oh, excuse me."
"Not even a 'hello', Mr. Darcy?" exclaimed a familiar voice.
"Ms. Benz!" exclaimed William, surprised.
"It's Lisa, okay?" smiled Lisa. "Jeez...I feel so weird when people call me Ms. Benz!"
William smiled. "Well...call me William, then." He looked at her for a moment. "What are you doing here?"
"Take a wild guess!" said Lisa saucily.
She grinned at William, then quickly turned and walked in the opposite direction. William followed her with his eyes. She was standing in front of a painting with an inscrutable look on her face. He felt strangely drawn to her and found himself walking in her direction.
"You like Van Gogh?" he asked Lisa as he came upon her.
"Yes," murmured Lisa, not moving her eyes away from the painting.
"How did you get in here?" asked William. "The tickets are impossible to get!"
"You're not the only one with influential friends!" retorted Lisa.
William smiled. He turned his attention to the "Self Portrait" in front of him.
"Van Gogh has always been one of my favorites."
"Me too," said Lisa. "It's tragic how one of the most talented artists of all time was also one of the most tormented. But he had a force and vigor which shines through in every stroke of his brush."
William regarded Lisa, impressed. "You really like him?"
"I like his work," corrected Lisa. "If I ever met Van Gogh, I would probably not like him. But yes, I admire postimpressionist art."
William looked at Lisa. "How is it that you surprise me every time I see you?"
Lisa smiled. "I don't know...you tell me."
Suddenly, William's face clouded in remembrance of what he had been witness to earlier. "I didn't know you were close to that photographer person."
Lisa flashed him a look. "Rick? I'm not close to him."
"Really? You were practically stuck to the guy yesterday..."
"That's none of your business," said Lisa stiffly. She added flippantly, "One would think that you were jealous!"
"Me?!" exclaimed William. "It's quite the opposite, I assure you."
Lisa looked him straight in the eye and knew he was lying. She smiled mysteriously and walked to the next painting. William caught up with her.
"Hey, listen...," he said.
"Yes?" Lisa faced him, her heart beating wildly, though she hardly knew why.
"Will you have dinner with me tonight?"
Lisa felt her heart racing even faster. "Why?" she crossed her arms and tilted her head.
"I want to get to know you..." said William.
"What about Anne?" asked Lisa. "Won't she mind?"
"Oh no!" exclaimed William. "It's purely business..."
For a moment, Lisa felt like refusing. She couldn't bear a "business" dinner with William Darcy. But she had worked so hard for this. So she forced a smile and said, "Okay."
William smiled and said no more. They went through rest of the exhibition together, making occasional comments. Neither of them was in mood of conversation, so they maintained companionable silence. Lisa stole a glance at William and sighed. She had managed to get a date with him, but what next? She didn't even want to think about it. Meanwhile, William wondered how he had let his passing fancy overwhelm and command him to a point that he had asked a veritable stranger on a date.
As William and Lisa were exiting the gallery, Lisa almost walked into a woman and she said, "Pardon me."
The woman looked at Lisa for a second, then exclaimed. "Oh, Elizabeth! It's you!!!"
Chapter 6
Lisa looked at the woman blankly and said, "Excuse me...do I know you?"
The woman was taken aback. She looked straight into Lisa's eyes for a moment and then glanced at William. She looked at Lisa again, then said, "I'm sorry..." She turned around and left abruptly, leaving Lisa staring after her.
"That's strange," offered William lightly, once they exited the gallery.
Lisa nodded absently, her thoughts still pondering on the encounter. She was so lost in thoughts that she didn't hear William talking to her.
"...so, how about I pick you up at 7?"
Lisa hesitated, then said, "No, I'll meet you at your office." She didn't want him to see where she lived.
"Okay." William frowned, then said. "Do you like Mexican?"
"Love it," smiled Lisa.
"Okay, then. See you later!" he smiled brightly at her, then his limousine appeared from nowhere and with a quick 'goodbye', he was gone. Lisa stood at the sidewalk, transfixed for several moments. She allowed herself to fancy that he really cared about her, that tonight would be special. But whom was she kidding? Lisa's lips curved in an ironic smile. Her cynical attitude overcame her and she realized how futile her hopes were.
Lisa ambled lazily outside the gallery, eventually finding a seat on an empty bench. She observed the passer-byes without much interest. Her deep, bottomless green eyes were fixed on a distant point and their expression was inscrutable. The thoughts darting in her mind were more so. The most accomplished psychiatrist could be employed full time by Lisa if she only shared what was inside her. But Lisa had ceased to share anything long ago.
At length, Lisa decided it was time to head back. As she got up from the bench, she spied a familiar figure exit the gallery and walk with quick steps. Lisa hesitated for a moment, then followed the figure, finally catching up.
"Hi...," muttered Lisa.
The woman glanced at Lisa, then looked straight ahead.
"I know you're probably angry with me," said Lisa. "But I had a good reason for what I did."
"And what would that be?" asked the woman, disdainfully.
"I can't tell you," said Lisa.
"Wonderful!" said the woman, quickening her pace, but Lisa did likewise. Irritated, the woman said, "Will you stop following me, Elizabeth?"
"You are my only friend in the world..." murmured Lisa, stopping.
The woman looked at Lisa, then said, "I used to be friends with Elizabeth Bennett, but she died with her family. Please excuse me."
Lisa could only blink back hot tears as she watched her best friend walk away from her.
As Lisa looked at her reflection in the mirror for a final time, she sighed. She saw a stunning, redhead with a clear, creamy complexion, wearing a flattering, black cocktail dress. She saw an unscrupulous woman who had no one in the world who cared for her. She saw a common con woman and crook. She saw Lisa Benz. No matter how hard she searched, she could not find Elizabeth Bennett. Lisa checked her perfect make-up and hair for the last time before she headed out of the door.
On the ride to the office, Lisa found herself get more and more nervous. Why, for god sakes, am I acting like an amateur? Be calm, be cool, she instructed herself. But the butterflies at the bottom of her stomach were unquestionable. Lisa was at a loss to understand. It was not as if this was the first time she was seducing someone. Lisa admonished herself again for being silly. The "business" dinner date would go fine and her plan would go on smoothly, as expected. Once the mission was accomplished, she would calmly leave William Darcy and move on to the next assignment. It was as simple as that. Or so, she convinced herself.
Lisa stared thoughtfully at the tall office building, shuddering inwardly at the prospect of spending the evening with William Darcy. He intimidated her and affected her in ways she had not thought possible. He shook emotions she did not know she had. In all events, William was unlike any man Lisa had met and she felt fairly threatened by him and his charms. But a mission was a mission.
Gathering her wits, Lisa proceeded inside and entered the elevator. She alighted at the appropriate floor and as she neared William's office, her heart beat wildly and she felt herself trembling. Calming down a little, Lisa knocked on William's door.
"Come in," instructed his deep, timbre voice.
Lisa took a deep breath. This is it!! She opened the door.
"Lisa, you're here!" he greeted her, smiling widely. "I was almost afraid you'd forget."
Not a chance! Lisa smiled in return. "How could I forget?"
Lisa appraised William quickly and approved of what she saw. He was dressed in a simple, yet elegant dark Gucci suit that complemented his dark eyes. His dark brown hair was slicked back with a few errant curls on his forehead. His eyes danced with amusement and laughter as he brushed his hands casually through his head. Even the suit wasn't able to conceal the well-toned muscles of his arms and chest. Lisa found herself staring awkwardly for a few moments, then she blushed and lowered her eyes.
"Well, are we ready?" asked William.
Lisa nodded mechanically. Why did he have to look so damned handsome? It had to be some sort of crime... Lisa's thoughts were interrupted when William walked up to her, offered her his arms and smiled his heart-melting smile. Lisa was mesmerized, and she accepted his arm as they left the office. Outside, the limousine was waiting for them. Once inside, they sat in awkward silence for a few moments, then William initiated the conversation with,
"Did I mention that you look positively radiant, Lisa?"
Lisa blushed profusely, then smiled. "I don't think you did mention it, but you may, by all means, as it does wonders for my already overblown ego!"
William grinned. "Well, then, I will say it again...you look positively radiant, Lisa."
Lisa said, "You don't look half bad yourself." Now that is the understatement of the year!
"Would you like some wine?" asked William. Lisa politely declined. Lisa observed him intently, then abruptly asked,
"Why are we here?"
"Excuse me?" William was surprised.
"You and me-together...why are we here?" said Lisa. "Why did you ask me out for dinner?"
William hesitated, then said, "Because I wanted to."
Lisa shook her head. "That's hardly a good reason. There has to be some ulterior motive, William. I know you're not interested in me...why, you're engaged to the lovely Anne de Bourgh..."
William's face stiffened at the mention of Anne. "Please, can we keep her out of this?" Lisa said nothing. "Look, we can turn back, if you want..."
"No! I'm sorry!" Lisa bit her lips. She was mortified at her uncalled for outburst. In all appearances, she was hurting her case more so than helping it. "Are you mad at me?" She looked at him with hopeful, probing eyes and an expression that elicited a smile.
"No," admitted William.
Lisa looked out of the window and was confused she turned to William. "Where are we going?"
"It's a surprise," said William mysteriously.
A little while later
"I can't believe this!!!!!!!" exclaimed Lisa. Do you like Mexican?
"You did say you liked Mexican!" smiled William. "Where better to eat Mexican food than Mexico itself."
Pemberley's private jet had flown Lisa and William into Mexico City, Mexico and a limousine was driving them into town. Lisa was excited beyond words. She had never been to Mexico and needless to say, she was very surprised by the gesture. It had completely taken her by surprise. As a matter of fact, she was overwhelmed.
The limousine stopped in front of a small Mexican restaurant, and the couple got off. William offered Lisa his arm again and whispered in her ear. "This is the best place to eat Mexican in the world."
Lisa could only look around in wonder. As she caught William's eyes, she smiled widely, signaling that she was enjoying the evening already. The maitre de greeted William.
"Senőr Darcy! It is good to see you again!" he said with a heavy Spanish accent. Then, looking at Lisa. "And senőra...it is a pleasure."
William smiled. "Well, is my table ready."
"Yes, Senőr, always ready for you!" he led them through the elegant restaurant to a private balcony in the back where a table for two had been laid out complete with candles and a red rose. Lisa gasped.
"Yes, Senőra likes it, si? Enjoy your evening!" he bowed and left them to their own devices.
William held the chair for Lisa, and she sat down, dazed. At length, she managed to whisper. "You did this all for me...?"
William smiled good-naturedly. "Well, yes...if we have to dine out, we might as well do it in style."
"This is the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me," confessed Lisa, looking into William's eyes.
William cleared his throat uncomfortably. "Yes, well...remember, it's just business."
"Right." Smiled Lisa, thoroughly unconvinced.
The waiter came to take their orders. William looked at Lisa expectantly.
"I'll have whatever you have," Lisa found herself saying. Oh gawd! You sound like a love-struck teenager!
William nodded, and ordered for both of them. When the waiter left, William turned to Lisa, "While we're here, there's a dance festival being held in the ____ Arena. Would you like to see it?"
"Sure," said Lisa nonchalantly.
There was another awkward silence, then William said, "I've been thinking..."
"Yes?" she encouraged him.
"Well...you were right about me," continued William. "I don't love Anne...probably never have. She's a very good person and an invaluable friend, but...that's it."
"Then, how did you get yourself engaged to her?" asked Lisa softly, leaning forward.
William shook his head. "I don't know...it just sort of happened. We've been friends for so long...it was expected that we get married, and then, she proposed to me, and I said 'yes'...I'm not exactly sure why I went along with it...I just did."
"And now you're having second thoughts?" prompted Lisa, mentally jumping with joy.
"Yeah, more or less," nodded William. "I'm not sure what to do...she'll be heartbroken if I call the whole thing off..."
"But can you live with her for the rest of your life, knowing that maybe your true love is out there, waiting?" asked Lisa, her eyes blazing.
"That is the question, isn't it?" William looked back at her.
"So, have you come to a decision?" asked Lisa, hopeful.
"Yes," replied William.
"And...?"
"I'll break up the engagement," announced William.
Lisa let out a sigh of relief, then blushed as she saw William staring at her.
"You look relieved...why?" he asked.
"Because I am," said Lisa, boldly. She continued. "I would hate to see anyone stuck in a loveless marriage. It is, perhaps, the most painful thing in the world."
William gazed into Lisa's eyes and was about to comment when the waiter came with their orders. All conversation, hereby, ceased but for the discussion of the merits of the food. The food was, indeed, very good and the choice of wine was befitting. Lisa's eyes shone with genuine happiness, something she had not experienced for a long time.
After dinner, William instructed the limousine driver to take them to the dance festival. Lisa sighed contently as she watched the lights of the Mexico City skyline pass by. She watched the streets and the cars and the pedestrians with keen interest. There was a little smile playing on her lips and she absently brushed her hair back. Lisa felt William's eyes focussed on her and she turned to find him observing her curiously.
"What?" she demanded.
"Did you know that your green eyes sparkle when you're angry or excited?" said William.
"I'm sure they do," said Lisa.
"Well, it's true," declared William. "And they are very beautiful."
No one had ever complimented Lisa on her eyes before and she was touched. "Thank you, William. At this rate, you will manage to make me vain and conceited and it'll all be your fault."
"That is a price I am ready to pay," smiled William gallantly.
His eyes were searching and his expression, earnest. Lisa felt the temperature go up by a few degrees, and to distract herself from the tempting allure of his lips, she looked out of the window. Lisa pondered on the success of her plan. She was certain that if she tried, she could take William to bed tonight. But a part of her resisted. She could not let their "relationship" die out so quickly. In fact, she did not feel ready for that step, as silly as that sounded. She wanted to enjoy what they had before taking that step. What Lisa did not acknowledge to herself was that she wanted William to respect her.
"We're here, sir," the driver informed them.
The dance festival turned out to be a major international event with a dance show from many countries. The dancers, often in pairs, were dressed in colorful, creative costumes and were very skillful. The styles of dance also varied greatly, but each was, in its own way, accomplished.
When an Irish ballerina came onto stage, Lisa leaned near William and whispered, "I used to take ballet lessons as a little girl."
"Really?" whispered back William. "Why did you stop?"
"Oh, I was not disciplined enough to pursue it," replied Lisa. "I d wish I hadn't stopped."
William smiled at her and gave her hand a squeeze. But instead of releasing it, he held her hand steadfastly, his eyes focussed on the stage. Lisa found it difficult to pay any attention to the stage. She could feel the warmth of William's big hands on her own and her pulse quickened. She stole a glance at him, but he seemed absorbed by the dance. Lisa sighed. She was reading too much into every little gesture. She felt foolish.
As the festival ended, the crowd was on their feet, cheering and applauding. The bustle to get out of the arena proved overwhelming. The crowd was moving very slowly and there was a threat of getting separated from one's companions. William motioned Lisa to hold onto his arms. Lisa nodded and did as she so. Then, William grabbed her waist and held her close as the crowd pressed them together. Neither of them spoke a word, but was keenly aware of the feel of the other. Finally, they made it out of the arena and found the limousine waiting.
"To the airport," William instructed the driver.
The flight back was uneventful as both of them were lost in their own thoughts. A feeling of comfortable camaraderie pervaded. Lisa looked at William, who caught her glance and smiled. She marveled at the entire evening. She knew that no matter what happened, she would cherish it forever. Mexico would always hold a special place in her heart. She chuckled.
"What is it?" asked William.
"I was just thinking...," said Lisa, her eyes dancing mischievously. "If you fly down to Mexico for the first date, I wonder what you do for the third or fourth one!"
William simply smiled and said in a jesting manner, "For you, darling, anything!"
Lisa said no more. She had allowed herself to be swept away by the fairy tale, but she knew that it had no happy ending. It would, undoubtedly, lead to heartbreak. She realized that she was allowing herself to her emotionally involved with this man. She observed him as he sat across from her, reading the Wall Street Journal. They were as different as two people could be, and yet, Lisa found him irresistibly attractive. It was like a bad habit that one tries to get rid of, but can't. The more charming, the more caring William proved to be, the more dangerous it was for Lisa. It was a lose-lose situation.
When they landed at the airport, they headed for the limousine once again. But Lisa declined. "I'll take a cab home, William."
"But why?" asked William. "I'll drop you off wherever you want."
"No, it's okay," she insisted and finally, William obliged. He summoned a cab and it appeared immediately. Before Lisa got in, she turned to him and impulsively kissed him on the cheeks. "Thank you...I had a lovely time."
William looked her straight in the eyes and said, "I did, too."
Lisa wanted him to say something more, beg her to stay, anything. But he didn't. Reluctantly, she got into her cab and gave directions for her house. As the cab rolled away, she looked back to see William stand there thoughtfully, his eyes distant. A tear rolled down her eyes.
"Wickie, why don't you just kill him?" demanded Lisa, the next morning, over the phone.
"I'm having too much fun!" exclaimed Wickie. "Why b****, what's your problem? Are you scared?"
Yeah, scared of falling in love... "No," said Lisa defiantly. "But what's the use of this whole scheme. You might as well just kill him and get it over with."
"But I want to see him suffer and squirm...I want him destroyed," said Wickie and from his tone, Lisa knew that he meant it. She shuddered.
"Right," she said.
"So, it's going well?" asked Wickie.
"Yeah," replied Lisa. Too well... She related the previous night's events to him.
"Good, good," said Wickie. "He's gonna make his move soon...this whole romantic thing is just his way of getting chicks into his bed. I know him and his damn tricks. He'll make it seem like he really cares for you...blah-blah, and the chick will be wired. These goddamn rich...it's just a way to buy you."
Lisa was about to protest, but remained quiet. After all, Wickie might be right. Who was she to presume that William even remotely cared about her? Wickie was probably right. This was just an expensive ruse he used for other girls...he probably flew Anne down to Mexico, too. No wonder he had his own table reserved in that restaurant.
"Hey b****, are you there?" Wickie demanded.
"Yeah," said Lisa, noticing how differently she was treated by these two men. But she had ceased to be offended by Wickie long ago. After all, he had saved her life.
"Okay, then, talk to ya later. Bye!" he hung up.
Lisa hung up and stared into space. Her mind traveled back as she recalled her first meeting with Wickie...it had been an accidental occurrence, but one that would affect Lisa for the rest of her life.
Chapter 7
Flashback
Elizabeth Bennett occupied a quiet corner at the bus stop, with her head buried in her hands. Her curly red hair fell over her face, blowing gently in the summer breeze. There was no question of her going back to college. In one day, her entire future was washed away. Elizabeth reprimanded herself for being so selfish. In that hour of grief, there was no room for self-pity. It was a time for vengeance.
In spite of the sweltering heat, Elizabeth felt a chill run down her spine. She could still not comprehend the enormity of what had happened and the steps she proposed to take. But the sight of Jane justified it all. It pained Elizabeth to leave her sister in the hospital like that, but there was nothing else she could possibly do. Just thinking of Jane made Elizabeth sick as she felt the bile rise again. She could never forgive those who had done this to her family. No, Elizabeth had to be strong for them.
Elizabeth waited for an hour and still the bus didn't appear. Tired and hot, she got up from her seat and started walking slowly, but she had nowhere to go. At 19, Elizabeth had all the promise of an attractive woman, a stunning beauty. She had an excellent figure, and her fiery red hair and creamy complexion along with her pixyish green made an irresistible combination. She was hardly aware of how appealing she actually was. Till this point, Elizabeth had no concept of her own power. All this, however, was soon to change.
As Elizabeth ambled slowly , her mind far away, a sleek, black Mercedes pulled up next to her. She looked at it curiously when the back door opened and a head peeped out. It was an attractive man in his twenties who had a charming smile and an innocent expression on his face. He looked at Elizabeth guilelessly.
"Want a ride somewhere?" he asked casually.
A good girl never speaks to strangers. "No, thanks. I'm fine," said Elizabeth, ready to walk on.
"No, really," said the man, persistent.
"I said I'm fine," said Elizabeth with an edge in her voice.
"No, I insist," said the man.
There was something about his voice that made Elizabeth shudder. She resisted no further and got into the Mercedes wordlessly after the man. The car stared moving and the man smiled at her, extending his hand.
"George Wickham," he said. "But friends call me Wickie."
"Elizabeth Bennett," said Elizabeth. "You can call me Elizabeth."
Wickie regarded her for a second, then looked away. After a pause, he asked, "Where can I drop you off?"
Elizabeth hesitated. "Um...Central Park..."
Wickie looked at her. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah."
"A beautiful young girl like you shouldn't be out there alone."
"I won't be alone."
"Fine," and Wickie said no more. 15 minutes later, the car stopped in front of Central Park and Elizabeth got off. She looked at the mysterious man and said,
"Thanks a lot...Wickie."
"Anytime." And the Mercedes sped away.
Elizabeth watched the departing car and sighed as she strolled into the park. She did not know what she was doing here. But then, where else could she go? After sometime, Elizabeth found herself an empty bench and sat down. As the sun set and the light faded, Elizabeth felt a little cold and lonely. The park was fast becoming deserted except for a few homeless drifters. I am one of them now, she thought in dismay. Elizabeth was not aware of when she drifted off to sleep, but she was suddenly awoken by a soft tap on her shoulders. As she opened her eyes, she found herself looking into the eyes on the handsome stranger, Wickie.
"Oh, it's you again," she said groggily, as she sat up.
"Not alone, huh?" said Wickie. "This is no place for you to be...come along." He forced her onto her feet, and she followed him, half asleep.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"Home," replied Wickie. And Elizabeth followed him.
Elizabeth sat up with a bolt. She looked around and found herself in a strange room. She had no recollection of how she got here. She vaguely remembered something about the park, but it was fuzzy. The room was spacious and well decorated. Suddenly, the door opened and Wickie walked in.
"You're finally up, sleepyhead!" he exclaimed.
"What am I doing here?" demanded Elizabeth.
Wickie shrugged. "Beats me. After all, I didn't invite you."
"This is serious!" exclaimed Elizabeth. "Tell me, please."
Wickie sighed. "I found you in the park and brought you here, because frankly, I felt sorry for you."
"I don't need your sympathy," huffed Elizabeth.
"I know what happened Elizabeth," said Wickie suddenly.
"How?" she looked at him, surprised.
"I'll be frank," said Wickie. "I am part of the "Mafia" here, so I know these things. Don't look so surprised...it's true. But that does not mean I'm a bad person. The bottom line is, I know what happened to you and I sympathize and I know I can help you."
"How?" she asked slowly.
"I'll help you take revenge. That's what you want, isn't it?"
Elizabeth nodded slowly.
"Then you got it," said Wickie. "If you are willing to work with me, I can promise you, I'll help you find that creep who did this to you and pay him back. But, you understand, you'll be part of our family, so there's no getting away. It's your choice."
Elizabeth stood there thoughtfully for a few moments, then said, "I'll do it."
"Okay, great! You can freshen up. I'll see about breakfast." He got up to leave. As he was at the door, he stopped, then said, "You'll need a nickname...Elizabeth is too...formal...you know what I mean?" he paused, then said. "How about Lisa?"
Elizabeth nodded slowly and at that moment Lisa was born.
