Re: why oh why didnt Darcy listen to me???

Don't worry, there's a lot more mushy stuff in the rewrite. The letter is delayed by a day, and we get that picnic at Pemberley. There's a confrontation with Mr. Gardiner, and then we get Darcy giving Elizabeth a guided tour of Pemberley's walking paths. They stay on for dinner, and Darcy turns pensive, which let Lizzy see some of his doubts and concerns.

And I promise, it gets mushy at the end, even in the original.

Alain is 14, by the way. Originally he was the son of a poor country gentleman, but as the story went on I realized he was more likely a tenant from the country, which is why his speech patterns change from when he was first introduced. I wanted to give him a carelessness of speech to show he was mostly uneducated. Even though he now has the trial of being a werewolf, happening upon Darcy through Charles is really the best thing that could have happened to him. Not only is Darcy able to care for him as a pack leader, but he also is going to receive a gentleman's education and be brought up in a much higher world.

Another reason I like Alain is that he is a good counterpoint to Darcy. When Darcy was changed, it was very traumatic, there was a lot of guilt and pain, and he really didn't want to be a wolf. It was a very dark time for Darcy. For Alain, it was still painful, and he didn't want to be a wolf at first (he was looking for a dram of wolfsbane to "cure" himself, which is how he ended up with Charles), but once he realized that being a wolf didn't mean he was a monster, he actually quite likes it. He has a sunny disposition, and nothing gets him down for long. He keeps Darcy from brooding for too long. And having someone to take care of, besides his sister which he has been doing for all his life, gives Darcy a reason to improve himself. He could ONLY provide for Alain as a wolf.

And to clarify what Latoya B said about Alain playing Lady Catherine's role, not exactly. See, Lizzy assumes that Jane told Charles to truth. What actually happened, is that Charles showed up on Longbourn's doorstep, and he already knew. The readers know that Darcy sent Alain to Charles, and he also sent a letter with an explanation of why Charles was suddenly hosting a baby werewolf. If Lizzy had known that from the beginning, she would have realized that Darcy still cared about her, enough to give her a protection detail of both Charles and Alain. Then she would have had more hope, at least for her future relations with Darcy. She might not have understood how he could still love her, but she would have had hope. And it is Elizabeth herself that let's the cat out, so to speak.

By the way, as a warning, I'm sure you've already guessed, the next chapter contains quite a bit of violence.
