Just so there's no mistake, I'm not criticizing screenwriter Andrew Davies. It was a dramatic piece, and dialog was required for that scene, where narration could be substituted in the novel.

I'm only making the observation that hearing the actual words makes them so stark and harsh that walking them back later is not as easy for TV-Darcy as it was for novel-Darcy.

Of course in both versions, we have improved, and solicitous Darcy warmly welcoming Lizzy and her aunt and uncle to Pemberley, so that smooths the way in both versions (though novel-Darcy didn't have the advantage of looking incredibly masculine after a quick dip in the swimming hole).
