Dowry Question

I was wondering if any of you can tell me when wealthy women stopped having dowries? About what year?

I was thinking about the Crawley sisters on Downton Abbey, I couldn't remember anyone on the show mentioning dowries for them. If they didn't have dowries in the true sense, would they just come into a certain amount of money at a certain age?
How would it have worked?
